THE SWEDISH MOTHER TONGUE TUITION: THE REPRESENTATION OF FUNDAMENTAL VALUES IN ARABIC TEXTBOOKS
Stockholm University, Faculty of Humanities, Department of Oriental Languages.
2008 (English)Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Abstract [en]

The thesis analysed the representation of ethnicity, disability, gender, religion/belief and sexual disposition in four imported Arabic textbooks used in the mother tongue tuition. The main result was that females were quantitatively underrepresented. Furthermore, they were engaged in activities associated with the domestic domain. The only profession for a woman in all of the books was that of being a teacher. Males were associated with the world outside of the home through work, technique, criminality, upholding the law, travelling, strength, authority, weapons and physical activity, among other things. Males hadmany different professions. The result corresponded to the findings of previous studies on gender in Arabic textbooks.
