Peasants and Rural Societies in History (Agricultural History)
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Sweden.
2015 (English)In: International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences, Vol 17 / [ed] James D. Wright, Elsevier, 2015, 2, 669-675 p.Chapter in book (Refereed)
Abstract [en]

Studies of peasants in history, rural history, have expanded in three waves. The first spanned the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries and was dominated by ethnology–anthropology, whilst the second was driven by economic and social history during the 1950s and 1960s. The third wave began in the 1990s and involved different disciplines, eventually developing into transnational studies. Some overarching discussions have concerned: ownership and the community, the market and commercialization, and productivity and farming systems. During recent decades, peasants as agents in historical change have been recognized.
