Abstract [en]

This thesis examines recurrent themes in the way school leadership is conceptualized and realised in Swedish elementary schools at the beginning of the 21st century, and how these views compare to perspectives and theories in the general field of leadership and organization on the one hand, and to theories regarding gender, power and leadership that emerged in the late 20th century on the other. Based on five doctoral theses regarding Swedish school leadership, whereof gender perspective is adopted in three, and the other two use a gender neutral normative perspective from the field of sociology of law, an image of recurrent themes in Swedish school leadership is produced, using abduction and a critically interpretative perspective. The conclusion is that gender discourses seem to have affected views upon leadership in Swedish elementary school at large, and that they also seem to produce differences in how male and female principals go about leading their schools.

Abstract [sv]

I denna uppsats undersöks hur rektors ledarskap omtalas och gestaltas i svensk skola i början av 2000-talet, och hur detta ledarskap framstår i jämförelse med å ena sidan allmänt förekommande perspektiv och teorier inom området ledarskap och organisation, och å andra sidan diskurser angående kön, makt och ledarskap som framträdde under senare delen av 1900-talet. Utifrån fem doktorsavhandlingar angående svenskt skolledarskap, varav tre behandlar skolledarskap med beaktande av könsperspektiv och två behandlar skolledarskap utifrån könsneutrala rättssociologiska normperspektiv, har en bild av återkommande teman inom synen på ledarskap i svensk grundskola framskrivits med hjälp av abduktiv metod och ett kritiskt tolkande perspektiv. Slutsatsen är att könsdiskurser i hög grad tycks ha påverkat synen på ledarskap i svensk grundskola som helhet och att de också tycks resultera i skillnader mellan manliga och kvinnliga rektorers sätt att bedriva ledarskap.
