    Abstract [en]

    Residents in marginalized areas tend to show a lower level of confidence in the criminal justice system and carry out police reports and testimonies to the criminal justice system to a lesser extent than residents in other areas. In this scientific essay, a qualitative study is conducted to analyze the disinclination to leave testimonies and report crimes in marginalized areas, along with researching possible ways to improve the residents relationship with the criminal justice system. The theoretical framework for this study consists of Žižeks theory of violence, territorial stigma and social exclusion. The sample group for the study is advocates in non-profit organizations operating in marginalized areas. Using a semi-structured interview method, this study’s empirical findings reveals that a critical view of the criminal justice system, lack of confidence in the criminal justice system, ambivalent feelings about the residential area and mass medias stigmatizing effects are believed to cause a reluctance to cooperate with the criminal justice system in marginalized areas. Furthermore, our findings show that an admittance of the existence of racism within the justice system, increased communication, cultural competence, and safe meeting places are believed to improve the relationship between the residents and the criminal justice system.

    Supporting Learning and Teaching of Chemistry in the Undergraduate Classroom2019Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    There is agreement in research about the need to find better ways of teaching chemistry to enhance students’ understanding. This thesis aims to contribute to the understanding of how we better support teaching and learning of undergraduate chemistry to make it meaningful and intelligible for students from the outset. The thesis is concerned with examining the interactions between student, specific content and teacher in the undergraduate chemistry classroom; that is, the processes making up the three relations of the didactic triangle. The data consists of observations of students and tutors during problem-solving activities in an introductory chemistry course and interviews with graduate students.

    Systematic analyses of the different interactions between the student, the chemistry content, and the tutor are made using the analytical tool of practical epistemology analysis. The main findings of the thesis include detailed insights into how undergraduate chemistry students deal with newly encountered content together with didactic models and concrete suggestions for improved teaching and for supporting continuity and progression in the undergraduate chemistry classroom. Specifically, I show how students deal with the chemistry content through a complex interaction of knowledge, experiences, and purposes on different levels invoked by both students and tutors as they interact with each other. Whether these interactions have a positive or negative effect on students’ learning depends on the nature of knowledge, experiences and purposes that were invoked. Moreover, the tutor sometimes invoked other purposes than the ones related to the task at hand for connecting the activity to the subject matter in general. These purposes were not always made continuous with the activity which resulting in confusion among students. The results from these analyses were used for producing hypotheses and models that could support continuity and progression during the activity. The suggested models aim to make the content more manageable and meaningful to students, enabling connections to other experiences and purposes, and helping teachers and tutors to analyze and reflect on their teaching. Moreover, a purpose- and activity-based progression is suggested that gives attention to purposes in chemistry education other than providing explanations of chemical phenomena. The aim of this ‘progression in action’ is to engage students in activities were they can see the meaning of chemical concepts and ideas through their use to accomplish different chemical tasks. A general conclusion is that detailed knowledge about the processes of teaching and learning is important for providing adequate support to both undergraduate students and university teachers in the chemistry classroom.

    Progression in action for developing chemical knowledgeManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, we discuss the well-known teaching challenge of how to provide undergraduate students with basic chemistry knowledge without making them experience these basics as meaningless and unintelligible. First, we situate the challenge in a classic dilemma: should we teach the necessary basic facts before the chemical explanations or should the explanations be taught before or in parallel to these facts? Here we draw on examples from interviews with graduate students reflecting on their experiences regarding their studies at the undergraduate level. Second, we suggest a way out of the dilemma, through a shift in perspective from the typical progression of facts and explanations towards a purpose and activity-based progression. We conclude with a discussion of implications of such a shift for university chemistry education together with suggestions for future research.

    Abstract [en]

    Anthropomorphisms are widespread at all levels of the educational system even among science experts. This has led to a shift in how anthropomorphisms are viewed in science education, from a discussion of whether they should be allowed or avoided towards an interest in their role in supporting students’ understanding of science. In this study we examine the role of anthropomorphisms in supporting students’ understanding of chemistry. We analyze examples from undergraduate students’ discussions during problem-solving classes through the use of practical epistemology analysis (PEA). Findings suggest that students invoked anthropomorphisms alongside technical relations which together produced more or less chemically appropriate explanations. Also, anthropomorphisms constitute potentially productive points of departure for rendering students’ explanations more chemically appropriate. The implications of this study refer to the need to deal with anthropomorphisms explicitly and repeatedly as well as to encourage explicit connections between different parts of the explanation - teleological as well as causal.

    In this study, we explore the issues and challenges involved in supporting students’ learning to discern relevant and critical aspects of determining oxidation states of atoms in complex molecules. We present a detailed case of an interaction between three students and a tutor during a problem-solving class, using the analytical tool of practical epistemology analysis (PEA). The results show that the ability to make relevant distinctions between the different parts of a molecule for solving the problem, even with the guidance of the tutor, seemed to be challenging for students. These shifts were connected to both purposes that were specific for solving the problem at hand, and additional purposes for general learning of the subject matter, in this case how to assign oxidation states in molecules. The students sometimes could not follow the additional purposes introduced by the tutor, which made the related distinctions more confusing. Our results indicate that in order to provide adequate support and guidance for students the tutor needs to consider how to sequence, move between, and productively connect the different purposes introduced in a tutor-student interaction. One way of doing that is by first pursuing the purposes for solving the problem and then successively introduce additional, more general purposes for developing students’ learning of the subject matter studied. Further recommendations drawn from this study are discussed as well.

    Tony Atkinson is universally celebrated for his outstanding contributions to the measurement and analysis of inequality, but he never saw the study of inequality as a separate branch of economics. He was an economist in the classical sense, rejecting any sub-field labelling of his interests and expertise, and he made contributions right across economics. His death on 1 January 2017 deprived the world of both an intellectual giant and a deeply committed public servant in the broadest sense of the term. This collective tribute highlights the range, depth and importance of Tony's enormous legacy, the product of almost fifty years’ work.

    Research has indicated that patients’ in-session experience of previously avoided affects may be important for effective psychotherapy. The aim of this study was to investigate patients’ in-session levels of affect experiencing in relation to their corresponding levels of insight, motivation, and inhibitory affects in initial Experiential Dynamic Therapy (EDT) sessions. Four hundred sixty-six 10-min video segments from 31 initial sessions were rated using the Achievement of Therapeutic Objectives Scale. A series of multilevel growth models, controlling for between-therapist variability, were estimated to predict patients’ adaptive affect experiencing (Activating Affects) across session segments. In line with our expectations, higher within-person levels of Insight and Motivation related to higher levels of Activating Affects per segment. Contrary to expectations, however, lower levels of Inhibition were not associated with higher levels of Activating Affects. Further, using a time-lagged model, we did not find that the levels of Insight, Motivation, or Inhibition during one session segment predicted Activating Affects in the next, possibly indicating that 10-min segments may be suboptimal for testing temporal relationships in affective processes. Our results suggest that, to intensify patients’ immediate affect experiencing in initial EDT sessions, therapists should focus on increasing insight into defensive patterns and, in particular, motivation to give them up. Future research should examine the impact of specific inhibitory affects more closely, as well as between-therapist variability in patients’ in-session adaptive affect experiencing.

Ved hjelp av den formuerettslige ugyldighetslæren i kombinasjon med de arverettslige rettskildefaktorene og de særlige hensyn om gjør seg gjeldende på arverettens område, søker forfatteren å gi en innføring i noen av de mest sentrale virkningsspørsmålene når det gjelder arverettslig ugyldighet.     The connection between clusters of innovation and economic growth has been in the interest ofresearchers and policy makers for decades. Economic distribution has been proven highlyconcentrated, and clusters are frequently studied for their dynamics to be understood. However, thereis less qualitative research focusing on agglomeration, and proximity, the distance between twoobjects, is often treated as a stable factor. Here lies the contribution of this thesis. By studying the lifescience cluster Hagastaden in Stockholm, Sweden, this case study sheds light on how dynamics ofproximity affect innovation and the importance of the communicative aspect of proximity. The Covid19 pandemic has forced many companies to work remotely and it created a unique opportunity tostudy the importance of place for innovation when the physical presence in it decreased. Throughqualitative interviews and thematic analysis, the author reveals that proximity might not be stable but,on the contrary, created. The result confirms earlier research regarding the positive effect oninnovation by being proximate but also adds to it by highlighting the aspect of communication ininnovative processes. The result implies that earlier studies on the location of analytical knowledgeclusters might need further research to be fully understood, as the result of the Hagastaden casecontradicts these to some extent by pointing to the urban environment as a factor of location choice.The results also call for further qualitative research in trying to understand the dynamics of clustercreation in general and planned clusters in particular, which could give important insights for researchand policy.

    From Epidemic to Pandemic: Did the COVID-19 Outbreak Affect High School Program Choices in Sweden?2021Report (Other academic)

    We study whether the onset of the COVID-19 crisis affected the program choices of highschool applicants in Sweden. Our analysis exploits the fact that the admission processconsists of two stages: a preliminary round in which applicants rank programs in orderof preference and a final round in which they have full flexibility to alter their preliminaryrankings. In 2020, the timing of the two rounds happened to provide a unique pre- and post-crisis snapshot of applicants’ preferences for various fields of study. Using school-leveldata on applicants’ top-ranked programs for all admission rounds between 2016 and 2020,we implement a difference-in-differences method to identify the immediate effect of thecrisis on program preferences. We find no change in preferences for academic programs,but a decline in top-ranked applications to some of the vocational programs. The declinesare most pronounced and robust for several service-oriented programs, in particular thoserelated to hotel and restaurant, which was the most adversely affected industry during thecrisis. This finding suggests that labor market considerations influence the study choicesmade by relatively young students.

    Employment plays a crucial role in the re-entry process and in reducing recidivism among offenders released from prison. But at the same time, imprisonment is generally regarded as harmful to post-release employment prospects. Little is known, however, about whether or not offenders’ employment trajectories before and after imprisonment are similar across countries. As a first step towards filling this gap in research, this paper provides evidence on employment trajectories before and after imprisonment in four Nordic welfare states: Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Using data gathered from administrative records on incarcerated offenders, the analysis focuses on individuals imprisoned for the first time and who served a prison sentence less than one year in length. Results show that although employment trajectories develop in mostly similar ways before and after imprisonment across these countries, important differences exist.

    Mismatch negativity (MMN) is a neural correlate of the preattentive detection of any change in the acoustic characteristics of sounds. Here we provide evidence that violations of a purely phonological constraint in a listener's native language can also elicit the brain's automatic change-detection response. The MMN differed between Finnish and Estonian listeners, conditions being equal except for the native language of the listeners. We used two experimental conditions: synthetic vowels in isolation and the same vowels embedded in a pseudo-word context. MMN responses to isolated vowels were similar for Finns and Estonians, while the same vowels in a pseudoword context elicited different MMN patterns depending on the listener's mother tongue.

    Children with language impairment (LI) and children with typical development (TD) were assessed by their respective parents using The MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories (Swedish version SECDI) and Greenspan Socio Emotional Growth Chart (GSEGC). The aim was to investigate socio-emotional and language development in children with LI and TD with respect to possible differential patterns and relations between the groups. The results highlight a clear association between language and socio-emotional development. Children with LI were rated similar to young language-matched children with TD, but significantly lower relative to age-matched TD children, particularly concerning symbolic stages of development: the use of linguistic symbols as well as related areas such as symbol play and symbolic mental ability. The results are discussed in light of presumable background factors and possible consequences for children or sub-groups of children with LI.

    Long-term cognitive outcome of childhood traumatic brain injury2010Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    There is limited knowledge of cognitive outcome extending beyond 5 years after childhood traumatic brain injury, CTBI. The main objectives of this thesis were to investigate cognitive outcome at 6-14 years after CTBI, and to evaluate if advancements in the neurosurgical care, starting 1992, did influence long-term outcome and early epidemiology. An additional aim was to study the relationship between early brain injury parameters and early functional outcome. Study 1 evaluated cognitive progress during 14 years after CTBI, over three neuropsychological assessments in 8 patients with serious CTBI. Study 2 used patient records to investigate early epidemiology, received rehabilitation and medical follow up in two clinical cohorts, n=82 and n=46, treated neurosurgically for CTBI before and after 1992. An exploratory cluster analysis was applied to analyse the relation between early brain injury severity parameters and early functional outcome. In Study 3, participants in the two cohorts, n=18 and n=23, treated neurosurgically for CTBI before and after 1992, were subject to an extensive neuropsychological assessment, 13 and 6 years after injury, respectively. Assessment results of the two cohorts were compared with each other and with controls. Data were analysed with multivariate analyses of variance. Results and discussion. There were significant long-term cognitive deficits of similar magnitude and character in the two cohorts with CTBI, treated before and after the advancements in neurosurgical care. At 6-14 years after injury, long-term deficits in verbal intellectual and executive functions were found, and were discussed in terms of their late maturation and a decreased executive control over verbal memory-functions after CTBI. Visuospatial functions had a slightly better long-term recovery. The amount of rehabilitation received was equally low in both cohorts. The length of time spent in intensive care and the duration of care in the respirator may have a stronger relationship to early outcome than does a single measure of level of consciousness at admission. Main conclusions are that cognitive deficits are apparent at long-term follow up, 6-13 years after neurosurgically treated CTBI, even after advancements in the neurosurgical care in Sweden. Measures of verbal IQ, verbal memory and executive functions were especially low while visuospatial intellectual functions appear to have a better long-term recovery.

    With the aim of describing variability in the long-term outcome of quality of life after neurosurgically treated pediatric traumatic brain injury, mostly self-reports of 21 individuals with mild or moderate/severe injury were gathered using Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory in telephone interviews 13 years aftyer injury. A majority of the participants reported brain injury-related problems. The median outcome on Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory was mild to moderate limitations. The variation within the moderate/severe group varied between relatively good outcome and moderate/severe limitations. Concentration, irritability, fatigue, and transportation were reported as the most problematic areas, whereas self-care was reported as well functioning. Societal participation appeared to be the best functional domain in this Swedish study. Examples of individual reports of the life-situation at various outcome levels were provided. Variability in outcome is large within severity groups, and research may gain by addressing both outcomes of the individuals and groups. Objective questions of outcome should be accompanied by questions of actual functioning in everyday life. To ensure long-term support for quality of life for those with remaining dysfunction after pediatric traumatic brain injury, healthcare systems should implement systematic routines for referral to rehabilitation and support.

    Influence of childhood traumatic brain injury (TBI) on cognitive recovery and subsequent development is poorly understood. In this longitudinal study we used cluster analysis to explore acute stage individual profiles of injury age and cognition in 118 children with traumatic brain injury. Repeated measures of cognitive function were conducted at 30 months, indicating recovery, and 10 years post-injury, indicating development. Nine clusters were identified. Recovery was evident in three clusters, two of them with low functioning profiles. Developmental gains occurred for three clusters and an acute profile of higher freedom from distractibility (FFD) and lower processing speed (PS) was related to positive differences. One cluster, average low functioning and especially low verbal comprehension, demonstrated a slower development than peers. This suggests that developmental change after TBI in childhood takes place on a continuum, with both chance of long-term catching up, and risk of poor development. An acute profile of higher FFD and lower PS seemed to reflect injury consequences and were followed by developmental gains. These results challenge previous findings, and warrant further investigation.

    Objective: To investigate the impact of time since injury on  neuropsychological and psychosocial outcome after serious TBI in childhood or adolescence. Methods: The subjects were eight patients with serious TBI sustained at a mean age of 14 years who had been assessed neuropsychological at one, seven and 14 years after TBI. A retrospective longitudinal design was chosen to describe the development in six neuropsychological domains on basis of the assessments. Psychosocial data were gathered from clinical knowledge and a semi-structured interview at 14 years after TBI. Results: Performance of verbal IQ shows a declining trend over the three assessments, that the performance of attention and working memory is low and that verbal learning is the cognitive domain, which exhibits the largest impairments. The main psychosocial result is that three of the eight subjects go from a school situation with no adjustments to adult life with an early retirement. Conclusions: Time since insult is an important factor when assessing outcome after TBI in childhood and adolescence and that assessment of final outcome should not be done before adulthood.

    Objective: To explore the cognitive long term outcome of two cohorts of patients neurosurgically treated for childhood traumatic brain injury (CTBI), either in 1987-1991 according to an older concept, or 1997-2001 with a stronger emphasis on volume targeted interventions. Research design and methods: Participants in the two cohorts were subject to an extensive neuropsychological assessment, 13.2 and 6.1 years post injury, respectively. In a between group design, assessment results of the two cohorts, n 18 and n 23, were compared to each other and to controls. Data were analyzed with multivariate analyses of variance. Results: Long-term cognitive deficits for both groups of similar magnitude and character were observed in both groups. Abilities were especially low regarding executive and memory function and verbal IQ. The cognitive results are discussed in terms of  vulnerability of verbal functions and decreased executive control over memory-functions. Conclusions: There is a definite need for long term follow up of cognitive deficits after neurosurgically treated CTBI, also with the newer neurosurgical concept. Verbal learning and the executive control over memory functions should be addressed with interventions aimed at restoration, coping and compensation.

    This article discusses the use of video cameras in participant observation drawing on approximately 300 hours of video data from an ethnographic study of Swedish family life. Departing from Karen Barad’s post-humanistic perspective on scientific practices, the aim is to critically analyse how researchers, research participants and technology produce and negotiate children’s corporeal privacy. Ethnographic videotaping is understood as a material- discursive practice that creates and sustains boundaries between private and public, where videotaping is ideologically connected to a public sphere that may at times ‘intrude’ on children’s corporeal privacy. The limits of corporeal privacy are never fixed, but open for negotiation; ethnographers may therefore unintentionally transgress the boundary and thus be faced with ethical dilemmas. The fluidity of privacy calls for ethical reflexivity before, during and after fieldwork, and researchers must be sensitive to when ethical issues are at hand and how to deal with them.

    Concerns about problematic gaming behaviors deserve our full attention. However, we claim that it is far from clear that these problems can or should be attributed to a new disorder. The empirical basis for a Gaming Disorder proposal, such as in the new ICD-11, suffers from fundamental issues. Our main concerns are the low quality of the research base, the fact that the current operationalization leans too heavily on substance use and gambling criteria, and the lack of consensus on symptomatology and assessment of problematic gaming. The act of formalizing this disorder, even as a proposal, has negative medical, scientific, public-health, societal, and human rights fallout that should be considered. Of particular concern are moral panics around the harm of video gaming. They might result in premature application of diagnosis in the medical community and the treatment of abundant false-positive cases, especially for children and adolescents. Second, research will be locked into a confirmatory approach, rather than an exploration of the boundaries of normal versus pathological. Third, the healthy majority of gamers will be affected negatively. We expect that the premature inclusion of Gaming Disorder as a diagnosis in ICD-11 will cause significant stigma to the millions of children who play video games as a part of a normal, healthy life. At this point, suggesting formal diagnoses and categories is premature: the ICD-11 proposal for Gaming Disorder should be removed to avoid a waste of public health resources as well as to avoid causing harm to healthy video gamers around the world.

    Using Norwegian survey data on partnered individuals ages 18 to 55 (N = 4,061; 31% cohabitors), the current study investigated differences across marital and cohabiting unions regarding the patterns of contact with the parents of the partner. In addition to investigating the frequency of such contact, we assessed the nature of and perceived quality of contacts with the partner's parents. The authors grouped respondents according to whether they had children with their partner and controlled for a range of selection characteristics. Results confirmed that parents with preschool children met their in-laws more frequently than the childless, irrespective of union type. Married respondents as well as cohabitors with preschool children reported better relations with their partner's parents than childless cohabitors. Taken together, the results imply that having small children was more decisive for the relationship with the parents of the partner than getting married, particularly with regard to contact frequency.

    Using comparable survey data from eight European countries this study investigated expected consequences of forming a co-residential relationship among non-partnered individuals aged 22-35 (N = 8443). Results showed that respondents expected improvements in their financial situation when moving in with a partner, though in all countries women held more positive expectations toward their post union formation economic situation than men. This result likely reflects the lingering traditional gender structure of the society, with men faced with the responsibility of being the main breadwinner in the family. Such an interpretation would seem to be supported by the fact that this gender gap was smallest in Sweden, France and Belgium, the countries in the current sample with the most egalitarian gender structure. Potential restrictions in personal freedom by forming a co-residential relationship, on the other hand, seem to be less important, particularly among women.

    Reproducibility is a defining feature of science, but the extent to which it characterizes current research is unknown. We conducted replications of 100 experimental and correlational studies published in three psychology journals using high-powered designs and original materials when available. Replication effects were half the magnitude of original effects, representing a substantial decline. Ninety-seven percent of original studies had statistically significant results. Thirty-six percent of replications had statistically significant results; 47% of original effect sizes were in the 95% confidence interval of the replication effect size; 39% of effects were subjectively rated to have replicated the original result; and if no bias in original results is assumed, combining original and replication results left 68% with statistically significant effects. Correlational tests suggest that replication success was better predicted by the strength of original evidence than by characteristics of the original and replication teams.

    I denna studie har ett internetbaserat stödforum för utmattningssyndrom analyserats i syfte att bidra med ny kunskap om identitetsskapande i interaktion, mellan individer med egen erfarenhet av utmatningssyndrom. Studien har utgått från en diskurspsykologisk inramning och sökt svar på frågeställningarna; I) vilka föreställningar om sjukdomsidentiteter förhandlas fram på ett internetbaserat stödforum för utmattningssyndrom? och II) hur konstrueras normalitet inom ramen för de sjukdomsidentiteter som produceras? Analys av medlemskategoriseringar har använts som huvudsakligt analytiskt verktyg vilket syftat till att synliggöra vilka kategorier som gjorts relevanta av forumdeltagarna. Analysen visar fem identitetspositioner vilka uttryckts som att vara: sjuk, utmattad, kunnig, inte ensam och snart bättre. På forumet görs försäkringskassan till en utanför- grupp vilket stärker gemenskapen av sjukdom bland forumdeltagarna. Denna gemenskap legitimerar att dela med sig av egna erfarenheter av utmattningssyndrom och att positionera sig som kunniga gentemot vårdapparaten. Samtidigt synliggör analysen hur forumdeltagarna konstruerar samsyn kring normalitet i utmattningen och vad som anses som normal sjukskrivningsperiod med anledning av utmattningssyndrom. I sin tur möjliggörs också identitetspositionen av att vara på bättringsvägen.

    The Swedish capital deficiency rules in ch. 25 sec. 13-20a CA (ABL) constitute an important part of the company law. Their purpose is to ensure that creditors have the possibility to receive payment for their claims if the company encounters a liquidity crisis. The rules require the board of directors to take a specific course of action when the equity capital falls to 12 499 SEK or less. The board must first prepare a control balance sheet and have it review by the company’s auditor. If the control balance sheet shows that the company’s equity capital is not covered by at least half, the board needs to call a first general meeting where the shareholders must consider whether the company should be liquidated. If the shareholders decide to attempt to resolve the capital deficiency, the company enters into an eight-month period during which the shareholders have an opportunity to plan and take appropriate restructuring measures. Before the eight-month period expires, the board must prepare a second control balance sheet, obtain opinions from the auditor, and call for a second general meeting. At the second general meeting, the question of liquidation must be tried again. 

    The function of the capital deficiency rules as creditor protection has been subject to large criticism from both theorists and practitioners for many years. The regulatory framework is primarily criticized for not creating the right conditions for detecting and remedying existing capital deficiencies at an early stage. The economic efficiency is also questioned. Despite this, the legislator has not made any amendments in the law. One may wonder why? This essay analyzes and evaluated the capital deficiency rules in ch. 25 sec. 13-20a CA 

    The study shows that the capital deficiency rules in ch. 25 sec. 13-20a CA, as suspected, do not provide satisfactory protection. Instead, they appear misleading. The main reason for this is that the share capital requirement in ch. 1 sec. 5 CA is very low and does not consider individual companies’ capital needs or operational risks. The rules in ch. 25 sec. 13-20a CA are linked to the share capital requirement and do not lead to its intended effects as the company often already is insolvent when they enter. Thus, it results in unnecessary costs to fulfill the law’s requirements that otherwise could have been used to adequate measures. An example of a better legislation is wrong trading according to sec. 214 IA 1986 which is based on insolvency. The rule stipulates a standard that directors must uphold when the company approaches or reaches insolvency, thereby creating incentives for directors to manage capital deficiency situations in time. The rule provides a strong protection for all creditors and promotes economic efficiency. The legislator should therefore consider implementing such a system.

    Sverige toppade nyligen en ranking som det land i världen som det är bäst att leva i avseende indikatorn livskvalité, totalplacering blev en femte plats. Det är positivt men vid sidan om topprankningar framträder en annan dyster verklighet mitt i det svenska välfärdssamhället. Civilsamhällets olika verksamheter med matutdelning utgör en nyckelroll i samhället. Dagligen ser vi medmänniskor köa för ett mål mat, en värmande kopp kaffe men kanske även för ett vänligt ord. Civilsamhällets aktörer synes utgöra en förutsättning för ett fungerande samhälle.  

    Syftet med studien är att utforska situationen för ålderspensionärer vilka diskursivt benämns ”fattigpensionärer” och som besöker civilsamhällets verksamheter som bedriver matutdelning, det som i media ofta benämns som ”soppkök”. Studien baseras på tolv semistrukturerade intervjuer med ålderspensionärer och personal. Studien utgår från klassteori, struktureringsteorin samt teorin om KASAM och belyser frågeställningar kring hur social stratifiering skapar exkludering, hur individen som aktör kan hantera sin livsvärld samt hur en känsla av sammanhang och tillhörighet är av betydelse för individen.  

    Resultaten påvisar att en del av de ålderspensionärer som varit med och byggt upp den svenska välfärden inte får den del av kakan i tillräckligt hög utsträckning, i stället har det blivit en daglig rutin att besöka civilsamhällets verksamheter för att få fysisk och social hunger mättad. Slutsatsen är att det föreligger exkludering men resultaten visar också på ålderspensionären som en handlingskraftig aktör.

    Studien vill vara en ögonöppnare för vem individen är som besöker civilsamhällets matutdelningar. När det är tydliggjort kan makthavare agera och sätta in de åtgärder som behövs för att säkerställa en välfärd för alla.

    The financial system is currently undergoing structural changes all over the world. Thanks to the advances of technology, banks are also changing the way they interact with their customers. From a face-to-face to a faceless contact, via cash machines and the Internet, banks are urging to create effective communication channels that maintain close relationships with their customers. To better illustrate this situation, this study was based on the case of FöreningsSparbaken, a Swedish retail bank, which has a traditional structure and is also undergoing structural changes. With the implementation of new technologies, the bank's customers are experimenting some dissatisfaction concerning the new services provided. Little personal contact, reduction in service options and payment of Internet service fees are the major negative aspects that customers are facing with the bank's changes. These issues are addressed and discussed in this research on the basis of marketing approach.

    Hedersrelaterat våld och praktiserandet av traditioner som arrangerade äktenskap och polygami har aktualiserat diskurser rörande erkännande av kulturella divergenser i en rad västliga länder. Studiens syfte är att belysa ståndpunkter i diskursen som rör kvinnors individuella rättigheter och gruppens rättigheter i ett mångkulturellt sammanhang vilket sker ut ett textanalytiskt perspektiv samt ur det levda livets. Jag utgår från filosofen Martha Nussbaum teori om mänskliga funktionsförmågor och definition av mänskliga rättigheter. Jag har analyserat två aktörers texter i diskursen, Susan Moller Okin (förespråkar individrättigheter) samt Charles Taylor (förespråkar grupprättigheter). Studiens centrala fråga samt övergripande frågeställningar är:

    Vad är mänskliga rättigheter?

    - ur det filosofiska perspektivet,

    - ur Taylors respektive Okins ståndpunkter och

    - ur det levda livets?

    Jag har intervjuat en kvinna, från en annan kulturell kontext än den svenska, om hennes valmöjligheter och handlingsutrymme. Jag kom fram till att Okins perspektiv överensstämmer med Nussbaum angående huruvida individens rättigheter skall ges företräde framför gruppens preferenser, vilket de bör enligt min analys, medan Taylor står längre ifrån och i vissa avseenden går helt emot Nussbaums teori.

    In most of the current applications security is usually provided individually. This means that various applications use their own security mechanisms and services, applied only to their own resources and functions. Furthermore, procedures to configure security parameters are usually inconvenient and complicated for non-technical users. As an alternative to this approach, we have designed and implemented Secure Workstation, which represents an integrated security environment and protects local IT resources, messages and operations across multiple applications. It comprises five components, i.e. four most commonly used PC applications: Secure Station Manager (equivalent to Windows Explorer), Secure E-Mail Client, Secure Documents System, and Secure Browser. These four components for their security extensions use functions and credentials of the fifth component, Generic Security Provider [5]. With this approach, we provide standard security services (authentication, confidentiality, and integrity and access control) and also additional, extended security services, such as transparent handling of certificates, use of smart cards, strong authentication protocol, SAML based single-singe-on, secure sessions, and other security functions, to all PC applications with the same set of security modules and parameters.

För att få en djupare förståelse för betydelsen av de äldres sociala förhållanden, gjordes en kvalitativ intervjuundersökning med tre äldre människor boende i eget hem med hemtjänstinsatser samt tre boende på servicehus, med avsikt att jämföra upplevelsen av ensamhet i de olika boendeformerna. Resultatet tematiserades kring följande teman: ålder och aktivitet, åldrande och sociala kontakter, åldrande och upplevelse av ensamhet/gemenskap, boendeformen och dess betydelse för ensamhets-/gemenskapsupplevelsen, hemtjänstens betydelse samt strategier mot den eventuella ensamheten. Analysen av resultatet gjordes utifrån följande gerontologiska teorier: rollteorin, aktivitetsteorin, disengagemangsteorin, teorin om gerotranscendens och livsloppsperspektiv på åldrandet. Undersökningen visade att samtliga respondenter upplever en minskning av de sociala kontakterna på grund av åldrandet och medföljande funktionsnedsättning och att detta har bidragit till en ökning av fysisk ensamhet. Upplevelsen av ensamhet tycks däremot inte vara påverkad av vare sig ålder eller boendeform. Alla respondenter tyckte att fysiska aktiviteter var viktiga och deltog själva i någon form av aktivitet oavsett om de kände sig ensamma eller ej. Hemtjänstpersonalen har en stor betydelse i respondenternas vardag. Den minskar deras ensamhet och är en trygghetsfaktor. Positiva omdömen är återkommande i respondenternas beskrivning av hemtjänstens roll i deras tillvaro.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this study is to investigate how the open-air museum of Skansen in Stockholm as venue for celebration of Persian Fire Festival is assessed by the festival's visitors. The study is based on a delimited part of a larger online survey with 280 completed questionnaires including both close-ended and open-ended questions, and a qualitative thematic analysis method has been used in this paper. The results show a high level of appreciation of the Skansen venue that gives the visitors positive emotions, meanings, place attachment, place identity and a sense of place. Contributing factors have been the high status of the venue that has given the visitors pride and dignity; security and safety of the venue; size of the venue; and the natural beauty of the venue. The most important disadvantage factor has been the lack of accessibility combined with lack of sufficient public transport. The results have implications for the Swedish society, for the policy makers in Stockholm city and for both the host and the organiser of the festival and gives rise to new debates on immigrants' socio-cultural integration into Swedish society. This paper gives a contribution to existing literature on festival venue and its impact on the visitor's overall assessment of the festival.

    Small firms in general have limited access to funding, which is a major problem for entrepreneurs. In particular, this problem is evident for women and ethnic minority groups. The purpose of the study is to examine empirically the impact of gender, ethnicity and other relevant variables on the access to external financing of new small firms. A sample of 2,764 female– and male–owned small businesses, based on a unique and large database gathered through interviews, was investigated employing binary logistic regression models. The results suggest that both gender and ethnicity are significant explanatory variables influencing the access to external capital at the start–up stage. Entrepreneurs' age, experience of starting businesses and education, as well as additional jobs beside their own business, are other variables that influence the way in which entrepreneurs finance their business. Moreover, firm characteristics in terms of personal start–up capital, firm size and legal form have an impact on financing behaviour at start–up. Since the knowledge about this issue is limited, the results of this study add to our understanding of the variables affecting the behaviour of small business endeavours in seeking funding at start–up

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study was to reach an increased understanding about how the changing process with regards to criminality and violent behaviour of men may look like. The questions on these issues were: (1) How do three men describe the changing process of their life manner from violence and criminality into non violence and non criminal way of life? (2) How do three professionals from the probation service describe the life changing process of men from violence and criminality into non violence and non criminal way of life? Our research study was thoroughly done based on a qualitative approach method, interviewing six individuals by following the theme focused interview guidelines. Three men with previous violence and crime records, actors, and three professionals working in the probation service, observers, were interviewed and the selection was intended to highlight the problem from two angles. The interviews were analyzed through social psychology and pattern which describes the process of changes. The results showed that the changing process from violence and criminality is complex and there are indeed several factors likewise major cause such as important circumstances, supporter and mentor, altered self-image and motivation was of great importance. The results correspond with previous research.

    The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in long-term health care costs and symptom severity after adjunctive intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy (ISTDP) individually tailored and administered to patients with bipolar disorder undergoing standard psychiatric care. Eleven therapists with different levels of expertise delivered an average of 4.6 one-hour sessions of ISTDP to 29 patients with bipolar disorders. Health care service costs were compiled for a one-year period prior to the start of ISTDP along with four one-year periods after termination. Two validated self-report scales, the Brief Symptom Inventory and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems, were administered at intake and termination of ISTDP. Hospital cost reductions were significant for the one-year post-treatment period relative to baseline year, and all cost reductions were sustained for the follow-up period of four post-treatment years. Self-reported psychiatric symptoms and interpersonal problems were significantly reduced. These preliminary findings suggest that this brief adjunctive psychotherapy may be beneficial and cost-effective in select patients with bipolar disorders, and that gains may be sustained in long-term followup. Future research directions are discussed.

    This study examined the effects of trial therapy interviews using intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy with 500 mixed sample, tertiary center patients. Furthermore, we investigated whether the effect of trial therapy was larger for patients who had a major unlocking of the unconscious during the interview compared with those who did not. Outcome measures were the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP), measured at baseline and at 1-month follow-up. Significant outcome effects were observed for both the BSI and the IIP with small to moderate preeffect/posteffect sizes, Cohen's d = 0.52 and 0.23, respectively. Treatment effects were greater in patientswho had a major unlocking of the unconscious comparedwith thosewho did not. The trial therapy interview appears to be beneficial, and its effects may relate to certain therapeutic processes. Further controlled research is warranted.

    Stockholms stad befinner sig nu i en kraftig utbyggnadsfas. Tidigare översiktsplaner pekar ut ett flertal stadsutvecklingsområden där en omfattande nybyggnation har ägt rum sedan millennieskiftet. Generellt kan utvecklingen i dessa områden förstås inom ett bredare teoretiskt ramverk gällande tredje vågens gentrifiering och nybyggnadsgentrifiering.

     

    Syftet med denna studie är att granska förekomsten av gentrifieringsprocesser i äldre bebyggelse som angränsar till stadsutvecklingsområdena, för att på så vis få en bättre förståelse kring gentrifieringens spridningseffekt. Med hjälp av befintlig kommunal statistik kartläggs inkomstutveckling och flyttaktivitet i sex äldre bostadsområden på basområdesnivå under åren 2004-2016.

     

    Resultaten visar att en inkomstmässig gentrifieringsprocess i varierande utsträckning förekommer i samtliga studerade basområden, vilket ger stöd till teorin om positiv spridningseffekt. Samtidigt är dem slutsatser som kan dras begränsade då det är svårt att isolera den lokala utvecklingen från en mer generell ekonomisk trend i Stockholms stad, utan att även beakta variabler som generationsväxling, konjunkturläge och förändring i sysselsättningsgrad.

    Vad kan högskolorna göra för att finansiera forskning i framtiden? Är nya universitet och regionala högskolor beroende av regionala medel för att utveckla forskning ochforskarutbildning? I denna rapport undersöks ett urval högskoleenheter: 1) nya universitet, 2) högskolor som tilldelats vetenskapsområde, samt 3) högskolor som etablerats efter 1996. Sammantaget ingår tre universitet och sju högskolor i undersökningen där finansiering av forskning och forskarutbildning granskas på detaljnivå. Med avseende på forskning och forskarutbildning har högskolorna expanderat snabbt sedan fem år tillbaka. Deras externa forskningsmedel är fortsatt viktiga trots att den statliga direktfinansieringen i flera fall har ökat med 150 procent. Endast 40-45 procent är direkta statliga anslag till forskning och forskarutbildning, vilket jämfört med UoH-sektorn i sin helhet utgör en något lägre andel. Resultaten pekar mot att högskolorna i urvalet i många fall är starkt anknutna till sina regioner. Detta antyds av den höga andelen medel från svenska företag samt från kommuner och landsting. Enligt beräkningarna i rapporten bör drygt tio procent av de totala medlen komma från sådana källor år 2001. Innebörden av detta är att drygt en femtedel av de externa FoU-medlen har någon form av lokal eller regional anknytning. Utöver detta kan noteras att medel från de nya forskningsstiftelserna visar sig vara av stor betydelse och dessa samvarierar i stor utsträckning med de lokala och regionala medlen. Vidare indikerar rapporten att det finns ett starkt samband mellan vetenskapsområde och regional anknytning. De högskolor och universitet som arbetar inom tekniskt vetenskapsområde har en stark och betydande anknytning till regionala forskningsbeställare. Sådan inriktning är samtidigt en konkurrensfördel vad gäller KK-stiftelsens medel. I ett tentativt index som prövas i rapportens andra del konstateras att tre högskoleenheter förtjänar att lyftas fram som framgångsrika i sin regionala samverkan: Mälardalens högskola, Malmö högskola och Karlstads universitet. Dessa har höga andelar FoU-medel från såväl den kommunala sektorn som svenska företag. Rapporten inleds med en problematiserande genomgång som visar att forskning för att vara användbar för företag och kommuner behöver arbeta mot excellens. Internationellt sett starka forskare och forskarmiljöer erbjuder goda samarbetsmöjligheter. Detta fordrar långsiktighet och uthållig forskningsfinansiering. Om de öronmärkta resurser som hittills kanaliserats till nya universitet och högskolor i en framtid kommer att bli mer konkurrensutsatta fordras strategier för att fokusera och koncentrera forskningsmedel. KK-stiftelsens satsningar förefaller ha gått i den riktningen. Frågan är om de regionala forskningsbeställarna kan arbeta i samma riktning?

    Informal institutions — family and kinship structures, traditions, and social norms — not only matter for development, but they are often decisive factors in shaping policy outcomes in environments of weak states and poor governance structures. Based on concrete examples in the areas of gender equality, governance and private sector development, this book advocates a pragmatic way of dealing with informal institutions. Neither the "romantic preservationist" nor the "bulldozing moderniser" approach promises an adequate solution.  Incorporating informal institutions in development strategies — whether by taking advantage of them in their existing state, by seeking to optimise their impact or by providing incentives to change them — will be instrumental in improving development outcomes, including achieving the Millennium Development Goals.
