    Abstract [en]

During the period c. 1720-1900 a large quantity of descriptions of rural areas in Sweden were set down on paper. Some 700 local descriptions were printed at the time or have appeared in print during the twentieth century. The most common geographical unit for local descriptions is the parish. As a rule the author was a public servant, and the clergy in particular were industrious local descriptive writers.

In part the aim of this thesis is to present the Swedish local description projects and local descriptive literature as a phenomenon of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A further aim is to investigate the way the folklife descriptions which come into most of the local descriptions are constituted for the period c. 1750-1850.

The local descriptions which form the main object of analysis and discussion in the thesis comprise contemporary delineations which came into being in order to achieve an economic-topographical description of the country, where agriculture and the individual economy of the common man were the focus of attention. These descriptions to a certain extent define the problems the authors associate with the economic life of the countryside and way of life of the population.

Local descriptions constitute a particular category of geographical delineation and have either come into being on the author's own initiative, in reply to a particular institution or the questionnaire of a particular person, or as an academic dissertation. The authors of local descriptions are in most cases connected with the area they describe. The work was mainly carried out by voluntary effort.

The idea of the need for a national and methodically organised inventorying of resources associated with the physical environment was the most important reason for undertaking local description projects. These Swedish local descriptions were one of several important cornerstones in the endeavours of the State to increase the population, income from taxes, and welfare in general. Local descriptions constituted materialised visions of optimism for growth, and a better and happier future for the country and its inhabitants, in the modern Sweden which was beginning to emerge in the mid-eighteenth century. Another overall aim was to improve the moral status of the peasantry and promote in them a moral and virtuous way of life. The enlightenment of the common man thereby became a didactic matter, touched on in many local descriptions. This process was not unique to Sweden; corresponding efforts took place in a whole host of other European countries.

The selection of sixty or so local descriptions studied in this thesis are characterised to a great extent by dualistic tendencies on the part of the public servants in their writings about, and interpretations of, peasant character and the state of the agricultural economy. Descriptions of the noble and exemplary true Swedish peasant faithful to his king, hospitable and honest are combined with descriptions of those same people's immodest consumption of spirits, lack of foresight, inclination to the "superstitious", and pernicious love of material things. In actual fact local descriptive writings consisted of an encounter: on the one side between more abstract and political discourses which contained thoughts of an ideal social organisation and the true nature of a population; while on the other side were the everyday experiences of separate writers vis a vis the qualities and situations of the local peasant population, compiled from their position as objectively observing public servants.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Skål för en pinne i brasan!: Det karnevaleska i tv-programmet "Färjan"2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    ABSTRACT

Images in History/History in Images: Towards an (audio)visual historiography2020Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The outcome of an international symposium taking place on 27–28 April 2017 at the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities in Stockholm, this anthology can be read from either end. At one end, a number of essays addressing the question of how pictorial, especially photographic, representations can and have been understood either as historical artefacts or as sources of knowledge about the past. In a nutshell, images in history. Turn the book over again and continue reading. At the other end, an equal number of contributions – texts as well as images – that approach the same question from the reverse angle: how pictorial, especially photographic, representations can themselves be used to convey a new and different understanding of the past. In another nutshell, history in images. Taken together, the two parts of the volume are intended, each from its own perspective, to prepare the ground for a new historical (sub)discipline, viz. (audio)visual historiography.

Lyssna till ditt hjärta: Muslimska moderskap och modrandets villkor i Sverige2014Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study deals with the meanings and conditions of motherhood for some Muslim women in Sweden, the majority of which live in Stockholm. The analysis is based mainly on 16 in-depth interviews with women who self-identify as Muslims. A majority of them were born in Sweden.

In this study, motherhood and mothering are defined as intentional care work situated within, and shaped by, specific social, cultural and historical contexts. I examine which gendered, religious and spatial meanings are associated with mothering and Muslim identity in a Swedish transnational context. The analysis shows that religion (for most of the women) constitutes an interpretational frame for motherhood and for how children should be mothered into good Muslims and citizens. The women represent Islam as a facilitating religion by making a distinction between religion and culture. The study also shows how the women approach the problem of maintaining the children’s Muslim identities and their self-esteem in a secularized and islamophobic Swedish context, and how they stress the importance of the child developing a strong inner self. Based on the women’s own experiences of having been singled out as different, they respond to a racist logic associated with certain norms and conceptions about what counts as freedom or oppression. The interviews also reveal a transnational aspect of their mothering in which they consider what other places can offer their children. The thesis shows on the one hand how an authentic Muslim identity is related to ideas about Muslim places and origins; on the other hand it demonstrates how the women’s ambivalent affinities with Sweden, and (what they consider to be) Swedish and Muslim values, destabilize such an unambiguous connection. These ambivalent identifications show how the women’s conditional affinities become relevant for how they speak about motherhood and mothering and for how they relate to questions concerning “the good of the child”.

The Trickster and the Witch: On the Romani Origins of "Captain Elin's Idol"2022In: Arv. Nordic Yearbook of Folklore, ISSN 0066-8176, E-ISSN 2002-4185, Vol. 78, p. 7-39Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

At the center of this article stands a striking but poorly understood artefact held at the Nordic Museum in Stockholm (NM.0159389): A piece of bovine leg bone carved in the likeness of a human skull. Traditionally described as an “idol,” the artefact belongs to a bundle of “witchcraft tools” (trolltyg) that have been attributed to the legendary witch, “Captain Elin,” loosely built on the historical person Elin Eriksdotter from Mofikerud, who was tried in a late witch trial in Näs, Värmland, in 1720. Scholars have long known that the attribution of the skull figure and most of the other items to Elin is false. In this article, we first describe how the association with “Captain Elin” arose, shedding new light on the creation of the legend and its association with the “witchcraft tools.” Secondly, we present new archival evidence that suggests an entirely different context for the bone artefact, namely in the encounters between Romani people and the majority population at the end of the Swedish Great Power era. We discuss the significance of this new context for the cultural memory of magic and witchcraft in Sweden, and for our understanding of the Romani minority’s place in early-modern society.

    Abstract [en]

This study is an exploration of the social engineering of the single-party era through the lenses of state officials in their work of propagating the nationalist state ideology. It aims to bring the state officials, in their (re)production of the beliefs and values as products and as the (re)producers of the state ideology, to the forefront. More specifically, it studies the negotiations and the contestations between state officials in regards to three main social structures which are (ethno)nationalism, womanhood, and laicism. A fourth social structure is the hierarchical relations within the state bureaucracy. A deeper understanding of the social engineering through the lenses of state officials is provided through a discursive close reading of the archival data regarding the activities of Halkevleri (People’s Houses), which were state institutions through which the state ideology was propagated to the people.

Kulturtanter: En studie i kvinnlig kulturkonsumtion2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is, using the Swedish expression “kulturtant” (cultured lady) as starting point, to understand how and why women consume the products of the culture industry more eagerly than men. The study is using the concepts put forward by Pierre Bourdieu; fields, capital and habitus. It is a qualitative study based on discussions in focus groups, interviews and material gathered through Google Alerts. In the literature this gap between the sexes with regard to the higher consumption on behalf of women has been referred to as the “puzzle” of women´s cultural consumption.

The empirical results show that the women in the study are well aware of what they want to gain by participating in cultural activities like reading, going to concerts, watching plays or going to the movies. There are three main results: The first result is that the women in the study want to participate in activities with peers that respect them. The second result is that the women are eager that their cultural activities should give them durable experiences. The third result can be described as a wish of the women that taking part in cultural activities will help them to develop as human beings, to become better persons. The women have made what can be called a culture journey that in analogy with a class journey may be argued to be non-reversible.

This Ethnological study, based on interviews with 8 pensioners with photography as a hobbyaims at finding the reasons the pensioners indicate are vital to them choosing photography asa hobby. The theoretical framework consists of Arnold Van Gennep’s ideas about Rites ofPassage and Gilles Deleuze’s theories of Becoming as a way to understand transitions in life. The results indicate that most of the interviewed persons seem to make a rather seamlesstransition from working life into retirement. The ones bringing their photo-hobby with themfrom earlier in life seem to make the smoothest transition of all.

Det Reserverade Bordet: En etnologisk studie av maskuliniteter på en sunkbar2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Immigration, Gender, and Family Transition to Adulthood in Sweden2007Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

One of the profound issues for the future is the extent to which immigrants and their children will become part of Swedish society or remian politically, culturally and economically distinctive. Therefore, the study of transition to adulthood among the adult children of immigrants is critical in understanding the direction of changes over time in the families of young women and men. In particular, this book discusses if the children of immigrants in Sweden choose to cohabit as do those of Swedish origin, or not? Are they more likely to select partners from their own group? And do they construct families that are egalitarian as do those of Swedish origin or conform to more male-dominated relationships?

    Abstract [en]

This paper examines critical perspectives on Body Mass Index (BMI) in ongoing societaldiscussions, focusing on poststructuralism, gender, consumer society, and race. Using fatstudies, intersectionality theory, and poststructuralism, the research integrates Foucault'spower theories. Analyzing six scholarly articles, the study categorizes BMI criticisms, emphasizing Foucault's biopower concepts as key to understanding societal regulation. Theparadox of power is evident as the slim body signifies self-discipline in a consumer-drivenculture valuing control. The paper also highlights BMI's critique for disregarding gender andrace, originating from the white male body, and immerses into historical associations. Thefindings of this paper uncovers how the discourse on BMI is connected to commercialinterests, politics, and economics, influencing power dynamics. In conclusion, the studyunderscores the link between BMI discourse, poststructuralism, and self-discipline, whilerevealing its limitations in a diversity context, with gender and race influencing criticism.Power, commercial interests, and societal politics emerge as crucial within this discourse.

    Abstract [en]

Royal weddings are magical moments. By stirring emotions and moving the public, they may redirect opinion and silence critical voices - at least for a while. This paper argues that a more long-term support for the monarchy will need an additional underpinning of respect for royal professionalism, and that studies of royal weddings, accordingly, should pay attention to how these ceremonies present their main characters as professional royal performers. The point is exemplified by a tentative comparison of the weddings of the Norwegian Crown Prince, in August, 2001 and a Norwegian princess, in May, 2002, and by some reflections on public reactions to these weddings.

    Abstract [en]

Norwegian Constitution Day is at face value a nationalist manifestation, focused on the celebration of Norwegian freedom. In the 1990's, celebrations of Constitution Day are broadly attended and highly appreciated among participants. But how do they work? How do they give form to an abstract ideology, and how are the ritual forms lived through and made sense of by participants - and to what ideological ends? Drawing upon theories of ritual efficiency, the author examines the organisation of the celebrations as well as participant experience and constructions of meaning. The conclusions show that concepts of peace and freedom are crucial in participant understanding, but that they are differently interpreted by participants in various generations. For persons belonging to post-war generations, the country and its qualities are more central topics for reflection that peace and freedom. It is also noted that celebration practice has a great appeal in its own right, and that it might be enjoyed and reproduced even when national dimensions are not fully experienced, or when they are explicitly questioned.

    A Proper Wedding

A proper wedding, according to popular expectations in contemporary Sweden, should be large and carefully planned, and take place in a church. This paper describes how such elaborate weddings can produce mixed feelings among clergy in the Church of Sweden, and how the organisation promotes the idea that a small and simple wedding is a good wedding. Furthermore, the paper shows how the wedding service has been discussed and reformed in the current process of revising the Book of Worship of the Church of Sweden, and finally reflects upon some alternatives when it comes to presenting, performing and perceiving the ritual. The paper can be read as an experiment in thinking about ritual form, but also as a window into current challenges and processes of change in the former state Church of Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

It is hard to deny that Swedish Ethnology retains a regional character, despite the fact that nowadays, many of its practicians transcend national borders in their projects and fieldwork. This paper argues that we could be more confident about the extent to, and the ways in which, Ethnology deals with regional matters. Important in this context is to make clear that our mission insofar is to investigate cultural processes in Sweden and not "a Swedish culture", and that this ought to be perceived as a comparative task. In addition though, the paper claims that our scholarly writing should transcend linguistic boundaries, and that we should embrace with enthusiasm the possibility of reaching out to an international community of colleagues by publishing more of our results in English.

    Abstract [sv]

NS-children are sons and daughters of members of a Norwegian nazi party, that collaborated during the Second World War German occupation of Norway with the foreign regime. In this paper, I discuss recent efforts to articulate in public the sufferings that children in this category had to endure in post-war Norway. Drawing on reflections on politics of identity, I dwell particularly upon how the experiences of the children are connected to recommendations that excuses should be produced, history rewritten, or wider political visions adopted. The conclusion points out a set of issues that I think ought to be considered in the study of processes where marginalised categories are transformed into groups and organisations.

    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses contemporary ways of understanding and defining culture, on one hand, and the discipline of (European) Ethnology in Sweden, on the other hand. It argues that though many of us have abandoned the concept of culture as an analytical tool, we still sorely need the word when it comes to spelling out what kind of reality we are studying, and what the discipline of Ethnology is actually about. The paper gives a brief outline of a re-formatted minimalistic understanding of culture, suitable for posing open-ended questions about how culture is created, handled and altered in various settings. It also discusses the difficulties that stem from our habit of studying a wide variety of subject matters, and proposes that rethinking and sharpening the concept of "ordinary people" might contribute to solving some problems here. Likewise, the paper stresses that as long as we write our reports in Swedish and are eager to make our texts accessible to wide audiences, Swedish society stands out as the area for which we take on particular responsibility, whether we explicitly intend it or not. However motivated this may be, the paper also suggests that we should expand our writing strategies by contributing more to international scholarly discourse on various fields and issues.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this commentary the idea of local culture is questioned. It is argued that localness is relative, and that this should be clearly recognized. On the other hand, local can also be used in a more basic sense. Phenomena can be local simply by virtue of existing in a specific geographical setting. The mere use of the word local does not therefore imply that the phenomena described represent a specific local culture.

    Abstract [sv]

The central question raised in this study is the sense of community in Keskijärvi, a mining village in the north of Sweden. What is the nature of the local community and in which activities is it expressed? This question is examined through an empirical study of two communicative practices which convey local knowledge in the village. The method used is participant observation, supplemented with interviews. Findings indicate that no single, overarching local community exists in the village, that the communities that do exist are of two kinds: concrete vs. imagined, and that acquaintance was a salient feature in the variation between the two communicating practices.
