Narrative and performative modalities in the Swedish opera-in-the-round Dreaming about Thérèse2014In: Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning, ISSN 0081-9816, STM-SJM, ISSN 2002-021X, Vol. 96, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish opera Drömmen om Thérèse (Dreaming about Thérèse) attracted national and international attention in the 1960s for its inventive approaches as an opera-in-the- round. Although this staging influenced the music’s functions, so far the music of this opera has been evaluated in accordance with the hegemony of narrative opera. Drömmen om Thérèse, however, offers an example of a contemporary fascination with exploring the spaces between borders, for instance, high versus popular culture and event performance versus recording. This article shows how the performative level of music in opera here acquires a particular quality through the incorporation of the devices of pluralism of styles, music in space and instrumental theatre. Rather than intoxication, the narrative- disrupting effect consists of a theatrical alienation. A relationship between performance and audience based on intimacy, equality, and reflection contributes to this effect.

De kast, Huldren gjør med Kohalen: Om kjønn og andre musikalske identiteter i den norske komponisten Agathe Backer Grøndahls "Huldreslaat"2005In: Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning, ISSN 0081-9816, Vol. 86, 49-66 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

"Huldreslaat, Norwegian music, gender and Agathe Backer Grøndahl or Huldra’s toss with her cow tail?"

Starting out from contemporary reception materials, the chapter elaborates and analyses Backer Grøndahl’s piano piece Huldreslaat (1887). It received its first performance with the composer herself at the piano in 1887. By virtue of being both in and as gender, national and international discourse, Huldreslaat is an attempt on Backer Grøndahl’s side to tread a thin red line, transforming traditional music and tales about a lovesick pagan muse ("huldra") into art music: The irresistibly beautiful huldra appears in the wilderness seducing lonely Christian men with her virtuoso music. Their only chance to escape is to hold her cow tail in a firm grip. The critics brought the connotations of the work’s title and Backer Grøndahl’s personal appearance to bear on the inherent meanings of her performance and the work. Attached to this composition’s "masque" is eroticism: This was ridiculed in the satirical magazine Vikingen. In this way, Huldreslaat illustrates dangers lurking in mythic allusions in as far as critics can be fatally attracted into appreciating a composition more for its composer pianist’s radiant, blonde and seducing persona than this piece of work’s originality and expressiveness. Ahistoric perspectives do not penetrate the ideological and social complexity in the critics’ understanding of Backer Grøndahl's alleged huldre-like femininity. The Swedish press discussed the "Norwegian" and "cosmopolitan" styles in Huldreslaat in relation to Edvard Grieg’s music and the Mountain King’s motto in Ibsen’s Peer Gynt. Gender, as well as Norwegian and international musical identities are fundamentally intertwined and interdependent in the work, its context, and reception materials presented in this dissertation. This character piece’s "Norwegianness" depends on the "masque" or the "producerly text" and the listeners or amateur performers attitudes towards the composition.

With Unease as Predicament: On Knowledge and Knowing in Artistic Research on Music2013In: Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning, ISSN 0081-9816, Vol. 95, 25-39 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The point of departure is Henk Borgdorff's characterization of the relation between the communities of traditional scholars and of artistic researchers as uneasy. With a short look at the relationship between music and science historically, this unease is revealed to be recurrent, but the origin in Pythagorean thought can serve as a corrective to a purely theoretical attitude. The question of knowledge is pivotal. George Steiner has suggested that the springs of creation lie beyond reach for research. However, artistic research seems to promise a better understanding of the creative process. This kind of research is often, by the researchers themselves, said to fathom tacit, non-discursive, even ineffable knowledge, as opposed to the explicit knowledge of ordinary research. In the article, it is however argued that such an opposition cannot be upheld: artistic research gives voice to tacit knowledge, making it explicit; scholarly studies on music are not closed to the aesthetic impulse; in both fields, explicit knowledge has excited aesthetic expression. Finally, instead of seeing reflective discourse as a problem in artistic research, it is suggested that new ways of letting the world be formulated in language should be striven for. Here, the aesthetic impulse brings a productive unease to both theory and practice.

Jan Ling: Franz Liszt och 1800-talets konstmusik2010In: Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning, ISSN 0081-9816, Vol. 92Article, book review (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
