    Adjustment Outcomes of Immigrant Children and Youth in Europe: A Meta-Analysis2016Inngår i: European Psychologist, ISSN 1016-9040, E-ISSN 1878-531X, Vol. 21, nr 2, s. 150-162Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Compared to natives, immigrants have been reported to display either more (migration morbidity) or fewer (immigrant paradox) adjustment problems. We examined these two perspectives using a meta-analysis from 51 studies (N = 224,197), reporting internalizing, externalizing, and academic outcomes among immigrant children and youth in Europe. Overall, migration morbidity was better supported than the immigrant paradox. Migration morbidity was supported for (a) externalizing outcomes in Northern Europe and adolescent samples; (b) academic outcomes for low SES and fewer girls across samples; (c) internalizing outcomes in Western Europe and preadolescent samples. Cultural diversity and long-term residence of immigrants are favorable factors for the paradox in externalizing outcomes, whereas immigrant family reunion was predictive for the paradox in internalizing and academic outcomes. Implications for future research and policy are discussed.

“Same Same” But Different?: Can Work Engagement Be Discriminated from Job Involvement and Organizational Commitment?2006Inngår i: European Psychologist, ISSN 1016-9040, E-ISSN 1878-531X, Vol. 11, nr 2, s. 119-127Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The present study investigates whether work engagement (measured by the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale; UWES) could be empirically separated from job involvement and organizational commitment. In addition, psychometric properties of the Swedish UWES were investigated. Discriminant validity of the UWES was tested through inspection of latent intercorrelations between the constructs, confirmatory factor analyses, and patterns of correlations with other constructs (health complaints, job and personal factors, and turnover intention) in a sample of Information Communication Technology consultants (N = 186). Conclusion: Work engagement, job involvement, and organizational commitment are empirically distinct constructs and, thus, reflect different aspects of work attachment. The internal consistency of the Swedish UWES was satisfactory, but the dimensionality was somewhat unclear.

    The Human Being in Society: Psychology as a Scientific Discipline2012Inngår i: European Psychologist, ISSN 1016-9040, E-ISSN 1878-531X, Vol. 17, nr 1, s. 21-27Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In everyday language the terms psychology and psychological are used in very different meanings, without a clear definition of what the terms refer to. This article is an attempt to meet the need for clarification of the content and boundaries of psychology as a scientific discipline. This is a prerequisite for real scientific contribution to progress in cross-disciplinary research and to decision making in societal and cultural processes. Applying a holistic – interactionistic view as the frame of reference for planning, implementation, and interpretation of single studies, the target of theoretical and empirical analyses is the human psychobiological and social being in continuous interaction with his/her proximal and distal environment.

APOE and lipid level synergy effects on declarative memory functioning in adulthood2009Inngår i: European Psychologist, ISSN 1016-9040, E-ISSN 1878-531X, Vol. 14, nr 4, s. 268-278Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study of the general population examined interactions of the gene Apolipoprotein E (APOE) and/or lipid levels, and their effects on cognitive change. A MANCOVA model based on longitudinal data (with a 5 year follow-up) obtained from the Betula study (n = 1777; age 35–85 years) was used. The significant two-way and three-way interaction effects detected were equally frequent in tests of episodic and semantic memory. A difference in the distribution of interaction effects on episodic and semantic memory decline was also found. Men demonstrated the worst cognitive development as shown by significant two-way interaction effects on episodic memory whereas two-way interaction effects among women resulted in the worst semantic memory development. This result is discussed from the viewpoint that tests of episodic and semantic memory have different cognitive demands. This study focuses on how interaction effects of the gene APOE and vascular risk factors (such as lipid levels) affect cognitive abilities and also whether the interaction effects vary across age and sex. In this study, the main focus is on interaction effects as a phenomenon in itself.
