O Judeu, de Bernardo Santareno y El sueño de la razón, de Antonio Buero Vallejo: dos diferentes estrategias creativas ante la censura2019In: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 113, no 1, p. 202-214Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Jew, by Bernardo Santareno and The Sleep of Reason, by Antonio Buero Vallejo: two different creative strategies for censorship

It is plausible that the Portuguese playwright Bernardo Santareno and his Spanish counterpart Antonio Buero Vallejo represent two different - or even opposite - attitudes regarding the censorship of the Portuguese and Spanish regimes in the 1960s. Two texts are analyzed in this article: Santareno’s O Judeu and Buero Vallejo‘s El sueño de la razón, which have been chosen because of the contrast between analogies and divergences that arise when evaluating the historical period represented in the two dramas.

From the methodological point of view, I will approach the textual aspect of the two dramas in order to highlight the analogies and, above all, the semantic-syntactic differences between them, later I will try to highlight the cultural political context that might have conditioned the different aesthetic options of the two writers.

    Abstract [en]

The background material of the study consists of articles about French literature gathered between 2010 and 2014 in the Swedish press. The aim of the article is to isolate the most widely discussed French literature from France in the Swedish press during the period, in order to explore why the transfer of this literature persists over time, how it is perceived, and which type of mediators bring about this transmission. The study raises questions about the image of French literature in Swedish media, Sweden’s impact on the transnational circulation of literature, and the use of French literature to place Sweden on the literary map.

The results of the reception study show that French literature is presented as both aesthetically disruptive with innovative features and as a normative and traditional model. It incarnates an image of tradition as well as of modernity. French literature from France is principally mediated by orthodox journalists with a consistent symbolic capital, and the posture of these journalists is analyzed through Sapiro’s model, inspired by Bourdieu. The orthodox journalists manage to redirect the symbolic capital inherent to consecrated French literature at three levels: national, personal, and transnational. Firstly, the importation of French literature increases Swedish literature’s symbolic capital. Secondly, this transfer allows for an auto-consecration of the orthodox journalists themselves. Thirdly, this use of highly valued imported literature engenders a supplementary consecration (surconsecration) of a national literature and its dominating language. In conclusion, these observed bilateral literary exchanges show the often overlooked importance of peripheral countries in transnational literary transmission. The results modify Casanova’s (2002) model, since they display the impact on the market from the margins. The transfer of central national literatures in dominating languages towards peripheral countries allows for dominated languages and minor national literatures to take an active part in the construction and reconstruction of the relations on the global literary map.

Interprétation des noms de célébrités dans les traductions: la prise en charge du lecteur2015In: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 109, no 2, p. 30-50Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

In this article we describe the activity of the critique and essayist Stig Strömholm in the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet in the section called Under Strecket. The dataset consists of 147 articles between 1960 and 1995, and our presentation is mainly concerned with his numerous articles on French literature. As a critic, Strömholm represents a particularly (if not unique) case, since nearly all of his articles deal with literature written between the 17th and 19th century. Furthermore, Strömholm - who during the period in question pursued a career as professor of law - did not take part in the general literary discussion in Sweden and did not have much contact with neither his readers nor the editorial staff of Svenska Dagbladet (who paid for the articles). So, from a linguistic and economic point of view, these articles can be seen as being written in a kind of isolation. From an ideological point of view, the articles reflect a standpoint that could be described as closed to Jansenism, with Pascal and Racine as models. On the other end of the ideological spectrum, we find authors from the Romantic Movement, such as Hugo.

Introducing Italy, 1948–1968: the importance of symbolic capital and position of literary mediators in the semiperiphery2016In: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 110, p. 75-107Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the impact of two literary mediators – Martha Larsson and Anders Österling – both of whom introduced Italian literature in Sweden during the second half of the 20th century. These mediators are compared to each other with regard to their social background, habitus and position in the literary field, all elements included in their symbolic capital. By mapping out which literary texts and authors they actually introduced in the period 1948–1968, with special attention given to crucial factors such as genre and gender, the results show that their selections had different characters. While Larsson introduced contemporary authors who were highly regarded in Italy at the time, and more closely related to what Bourdieu (1993) described as the autonomous pole, Österling mainly focused on authors closer to the heteronomous pole. Following Broomans’ (2009) six-phase model of cultural transfer, the study analyzes whether their introductions had a direct effect on publication, and what strategies they used in order to introduce new Italian authorships to a Swedish audience. Drawing upon Bourdieu and (1990) and Casanova (2002), it is also argued that both mediators introduced Italian literature in order to gain symbolic capital and strengthen their positions in the Swedish literary field.

Das Sportwunder DDR aus der schwedischen Perspektive: Eine linguistische Diskursanalyse2013In: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 107, no 2, p. 35-55Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [de]

Una promesa imposible: Fronteras geográficas y corporales en Boca de lobo, de Sergio Chejfec2017In: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 111, no 1, p. 156-172Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [es]

Boca de lobo (Chejfec 2009) speculates on the transgression of physical and imaginary borders, both at a geographical and corporal level. Taking the novel's argument as a starting point, the objective of this essay is to analyze the border transgressions occurring both at the geographical and corporeal space. Once these representations are identified, I propose to evaluate the possible correlation drawn by the narrator between one space and the other, that is: to interpret the movements through physical and imaginary boundaries, as to identify the extent to which subjectivities can be affected by space.

Which Emily Dickinson in Translation?2013In: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 107, no 2, p. 115-132Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Which Emily Dickinson in Translation discusses the choice of source text/s for translations of poems by Emily Dickinson into Swedish, mainly from the point of view of line division. Should translators use source texts with conventional layouts or opt for trying to reproduce also the less conventional ones found in Dickinson's manuscripts as today shown on the Internet or in R. W. Franklin's facsimile edition (1981), as poet Ann Jaderlund does in her 2012 translations? What are the consequences of choosing one or the other? Five poems from about 1860 to about 1884 in a number of different translations illustrate the discussion, which concludes that the former is to be preferred, for the sake of syntactical and metrical clarity.

200 años de herencia lingüística afrolatina: descendientes de Ansina y otros soldados de Artigas en el Paraguay2013In: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 107, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
