    With the aim of describing variability in the long-term outcome of quality of life after neurosurgically treated pediatric traumatic brain injury, mostly self-reports of 21 individuals with mild or moderate/severe injury were gathered using Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory in telephone interviews 13 years aftyer injury. A majority of the participants reported brain injury-related problems. The median outcome on Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory was mild to moderate limitations. The variation within the moderate/severe group varied between relatively good outcome and moderate/severe limitations. Concentration, irritability, fatigue, and transportation were reported as the most problematic areas, whereas self-care was reported as well functioning. Societal participation appeared to be the best functional domain in this Swedish study. Examples of individual reports of the life-situation at various outcome levels were provided. Variability in outcome is large within severity groups, and research may gain by addressing both outcomes of the individuals and groups. Objective questions of outcome should be accompanied by questions of actual functioning in everyday life. To ensure long-term support for quality of life for those with remaining dysfunction after pediatric traumatic brain injury, healthcare systems should implement systematic routines for referral to rehabilitation and support.

    Abstract [en]

    Few studies have been conducted with focus on implementation of assistive technology for persons with mental retardation at day centres. This study elucidates some of the factors affecting the implementation and also reveals the results from an empirical survey on education and attitudes towards usage of new technology by day centre staff. The importance of staff education on mental retardation, assistive technology, adaptation of devices and methods for training is stressed.

    This article is based on data collected in the interdisciplinary project ‘basic skills, social interaction and training of the working memory’. The trend in today's schools is to work for inclusion of all children based on the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The focus of this study is teachers' and parents' views on the education of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and similar symptoms. The aim is to increase teachers' and parents' knowledge of the school context for this group of children. A questionnaire was developed and distributed to all teachers and parents involved in the project and data were compiled and reported in running text. Twenty-one teachers and school staff, and 41 parents (one dropped out) were involved. The results showed that problems in the classroom sometimes exceeded the genuine tasks of the school, and too much time was spent on reproving pupils' unacceptable behaviours.

    Abstract [en]

    This prospective study aimed to describe alcohol habits in patients with chronic pain compared with those in a matched control group from the general Swedish population. In total, 100 consecutive patients enrolled were matched against 100 individuals in a control group on the basis of age and sex. Alcohol habits were measured using the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test in both groups. The patients were recruited if they underwent a biopsychosocial pain analysis for possible participation in pain rehabilitation. The patients with chronic pain drank alcohol significantly less, less often, in smaller quantities, and became intoxicated less than the control group did. The study was rather small and at a single site, but its strengths were the comprehensive and simple design and the possibility to describe the sample's representativeness compared with other clinics on the basis of data from a national quality register.

    Abstract [en]

    This study concerns the ethical issues related to interviews with children. In a sub study of the Basic Skills, Social Interaction and Training of the Working Memory (BASTA) project, 10 children between 10 and 12 years of age were interviewed. Interviews involving children have to address many more ethical issues than interviews with adults. Children constitute an overexposed group because they are under age, and because they stand in a dependent relationship with adults. One ethical dilemma for the researcher in interviews with children might be the conflict between professional secrecy and the obligation to report, as stated in the Swedish Social Services Act. According to this Act and to ethical research principles, researchers are bound to maintain professional secrecy.
