Reportaget som berättelse: En narratologisk undersökning av reportagegenren2021Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This study is the first dissertation where the genre of reportage (in the U.S. classified as literary journalism) is systematically mapped with the help of narratology. Using tools primarily from structural discourse narratology, the thesis examines, describes and maps written reportages as narratives. Rhetorical and cognitive narratology complement the approach.

The investigation rests on two assumptions. Firstly, a reporter’s professional purpose is to report about people and states of affairs outside the reporter herself. This results in a contextual commitment, which leaves traces in the narrative in the form of a textual commitment. The latter is in turn divided into narrative empathy and narrative compassion/sympathy. The thesis highlights the creation of narrative structures and stylistic features in reportages and the overall conclusion is that conceptions about a reporter’s professional purpose in fact do influence the narrativity of the text.

Secondly, in contrast to news journalism, reportage is a personal genre that can be considered a directed reality: the content is taken from reality but the form is personal and a consequence of the writing reporter’s choices. The thesis presents a narratological model where the text develops in the interplay between three instances: a director, a narrator (in a first-person reportage a narrating reporter) and experiencing characters (in a first-person reportage including an experiencing reporter). The director should be regarded as a structuring property of the text itself.

Part 1 provides a historical background to the reportage genre and the social side of the reporter role. In part 2, narrative characteristics of the genre are explored and defined together with the common roots of reportage and novels within realism and naturalism. Part 3 demonstrates how a contextual commitment can be transformed into a textual commitment. Throughout the dissertation, the director model is used to investigate differences and similarities between subcategories within the genre, sometimes between single texts, sometimes between reportage in general and fictional narrative. In part 4, a typology of reportage is presented. The genre is divided into five types of narration, based on the representational relation between how the physical reporter has collected information and in what ways an experiencing reporter is or is not apparent in the text.

The thesis ends with a historicization of consonance and dissonance within the reportage genre. Consonance emphasizes the characters’ “here-and-now” and can be found within a broad, classical tradition of eyewitness reporting. Dissonance emphasizes the narrator’s retrospective perspective and can be found within the modernistic type of American New Journalism and in more experimentally written reportages from the most recent decades. The thesis demonstrates how both these ways of narrating may enable the reader’s narrative empathy with someone else than the experiencing reporter.

The analyses and conclusions are mainly based on Swedish reportages from 1819 to 2014. This material is complemented with international reportages from 1903 to 2007,  from Norway, Poland, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Bohemia, Croatia, Belarus and the U.S. Accordingly, the dissertation demonstrates that traditions of reportage are primarily international and that the observations about narrative patterns within the genre are also relevant outside of Sweden.

Across and Beyond: Body and Landscape in Translation2022Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Translation is a careful process of carrying across the fullness of a spoken, written, signed, hummed or visualised message. Unavoidably, things will get lost, or spilled, along the way. In this publication, edited by three students in the International MA in Curating Art at Stockholm University, eleven artists address the act of translating across both human and non-human communication, thereby creating new universes in which to exist.

Video och installation i samverkan: Medier och intemedialitet i Mika Rottenbergs verk2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Hantverkets transformationer: Artwork, Petra Hultman – Needlework, Mary Hultman – Woodwork, Hilding Hultman i två utställningssituationer2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Uppsatsen undersöker de kontextuella transformationer hantverksföremålen i Petra Hultmans installation Artwork, Petra Hultman – Needlework, Mary Hultman – Woodwork, Hilding Hultman genomgår utifrån två utställningssituationer.

Sounding Matters: Exploring the Potentials of Sonic Leakage in Contemporary Art Spaces2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Contemporary art spaces are typically structured in accordance with a visual paradigm. However, sound has the capacity to leak into other spaces and does not conform to visual logics. Still, sounding artworks are frequently presented in these spaces. Thus, the aim of this thesis is to examine the effects of leaking sounding works within art spaces with an emphasis on the sensory experience of sound, and to further the understanding of how this can be operationalised curatorially. The research is focused on these questions: How is sound operating to produce experiential effects in the respective exhibition situations? What are the transformative potentials of sounding works in art spaces? What are the curatorial implications of these effects?

The study investigates two cases, the exhibitions Mother Courage and Her Children (2022) and Undamming Rivers (2022) that both provide examples of the interactions of sounding works in contemporary art spaces. The material is gathered through observation and analysed using the theory of performativity. The analysis defines a set of terms that describe different experiences of sounding works in the art spaces. Furthermore, these effects are shown to operate transformatively on the art event as aspects of a contemporaneous production and reception of the art. The concluding discussion elaborates on the curatorial implications of these terms in the curation of sounding works to show how sonic leakage facilitates definition of space, movement through space, and a layering of experience.

Cool Nature: Utopian Landscapes in Sweden 1780–18402022In: Sjuttonhundratal, ISSN 1652-4772, E-ISSN 2001-9866, Vol. 19, p. 94-116Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this essay, an interdisciplinary group of researchers sets out to address the period 1780–1840 in Sweden in a new way, by placing nature at its centre. With the help of ecocritical and transcultural theory, combined with renewed attention to the Swedish fine arts, learned discourses, and practices, we suggest a new approach to these revolutionary decades. The perceived dissonance, the interplay between climatic conditions and cultural template in early modern and modern Sweden, has not been fully addressed in current research, despite the fact that the relationship between humankind and the environment is a central issue in contemporary society and scholarship. Representations of nature situate the nation, they negotiate the relationship between a sensed reality and an ideal, between human and more-than-human beings. We suggest a focus on the unpredictable space created by negotiations of nature in Swedish representations during this crucial period, and, furthermore, on the ways in which this creative space is charged with utopian possibilities in the early Anthropocene. This is the background and the driving force of the planned research project ‘Cool Nature: Utopian Landscapes in Sweden 1780–1840’.

Visuell exotism i måleri och modefotografi: En postkolonial bildanalys av Paul Gauguin och Jean-Paul Goude2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, Harry Martinson’s Vägen till Klockrike (1948) is analyzed from an economic point of view. It aims to study how the setting and the values expressed in central conflicts are related to a logic of economy. Methodologically, the novel is read in comparison with Georg Simmel’s The Philosophy of Money (1978) and Christopher Newfield’s article “What is Literary Knowledge of Economy?” (2018), as well as a previous study on Martinson’s poetry and ideas by Johan Lundberg, Den andra enkelheten (1992).

The results of the study show that the main character Bolle struggles in the face of economic rationale that is turning him professionally obsolete. The same rationale defines what qualifies as a proper job. The miles of walking enacted by the vagabonds, which Bolle come to join, are not included and instead they are criminalized with economically motivated punishment. Exchange turns out to be a mediating factor which also shows how economic logic plays a vital role in defining the value of objects as well as people.

The view on money and other qualities in life differ greatly between the vagabonds and the rest of society. For the vagabonds, money is of secondary importance, a means but never and end in itself. Instead, freedom and the things in life most people take for granted are held in the highest esteem. This is in line with Martinson’s view of developments in his contemporary society, the consequences of which he warned about, but to which he also presented an antidote: a set of values to be sought in poetry. These values are also expressed in Vägen till Klockrike.

Digitaliserat kulturarv: Digitaliseringen av museers utbud före och under coronapandemin2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Afrodites ikonografi: Gudinnan av skönhet vid 1863 års Paris salong2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The opera La Juive by Fromental Halévy was first performed in Paris in 1835. It rapidly became a worldwide success, and was performed – and discussed – all over Europe within a few years of the Parisian premiere. La Juive was first performed in Stockholm 1866. This chapter deals with especially the press reactions to the first performance. The case of the reception of Halévy’s La Juive is a good example of the complex interaction and mobility of ideas, aesthetics, musical works, performers, performance practices, vocal and instrumental techniques, but also in acting, direction, production and scene techniques during the period.

Wagnerreceptionen i Sverige 1840-18652014In: Musikforskning idag: Växjö, 11-13 juni 2014, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Receptionshistoriska aspekter.

Försköning genom mode: En studie av porträtt från sekelskiftet 19002017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Svensk kulturarvspolitik 1996–2009–20162017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Coming Woman: Representations of Female Suffrage in Two Swedish Books for Girls

This article explores depictions of female suffrage and the women’s movement in two stories published for girls: Cecilia Milow’s ”Han eller hon?” (1892, Him or Her?) and Hedvig Svedenborg’s Hannas dagbok (1921, Hanna’s Diary). My aim is to analyze how representatives of the women’s movement are portrayed in the texts and how meeting these women affects the character development of the protagonist.

The article shows that both narratives associate the women’s movement with modernity. In Milow’s text, the main character has to find a balance between a modern, exaggerated version of female liberation and misogynist views of women’s subordination. Svedenborg’s novel, on the other hand, contrasts different types of female modernity and emancipation, giving priority to women who combine traditionally feminine values with political work as ”mothers of society”. Despite their ideological differences, both texts address the girl reader as a future political subject by incorporating explicit discussions of women’s rights in books for girls.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to analyze depictions of gender and sexuality in sex education books for young children published in Sweden between 1965 and 2014. After describing the general trends in the publication of sex education literature during the period, the article discusses the narrative address and family structures, gendered descriptions of reproduction, and the introduction of assisted reproductive technologies and non-heterosexual parenting in the studied material. The majority of the sex education books portray white, two-parent families and focus on heterosexual reproduction. Men and sperm are normally described as more active and important during conception, and the reproductive process is often depicted from the sperm’s point of view. At the same time, there are books throughout the period that problematize gender stereotypes in reproduction and, from the late 1990s, heteronormative sexuality. This article also shows that verbal and visual descriptions of sexual intercourse were more explicit in sex education books from the 1970s, while books from the early 21th century depict a greater variety of families and assisted reproductive technologies. After the 1970s, sex education literature for all ages disappears and the books are more clearly adapted for different age groups.

    Abstract [en]

In a Time of Democratization. Gender and Conservativism in Carl Sundbeck’s Elsa i Upsala

This article examines notions of gender and how they are utilized in criticism of the process of democratization in contemporary Sweden in Carl Sundbeck’s Elsa i Upsala (1897). The aim is to analyze how a girl protagonist becomes the means to visualizing and processing changes in the status of women in the 19th century. Gender and nationalism in Sundbeck’s narrative are discussed through an analysis of genre, the female narrator, processes of development and maturation, and male and female spheres.Elsa i Upsala is a hybrid of a girl’s book and an academic novel. The mix of genres reflects the gender transgressions of a modern life style which result in a weakening of the nation. The naïve girl narrator formulates criticism of modernity but she also functions as a positive counter-type to the emancipated female university students and their deformed femininity.

    Abstract [en]

Around the turn of the twentieth century, several retellings of Homer’s epic and Greek mythology were published for children in Sweden. Fridtjuv Berg’s Trojanska kriget (The Trojan War, 1901) in the canonical publication series Barnbiblioteket Saga (The Children’s Library Saga) became one of the most long-lived. This article examines the characteristics of Berg’s rewriting by an analysis of the organization of the narrative, paratextual features, and the depiction of gender. Berg’s strategies are compared with another contemporary rewriting of The Iliad, Kata Dalström’s Grekiska guda- och hjältesagor (Greek Tales of Gods and Heroes, 1893). The article shows that the two rewritings mainly depict the same events and in the same order. Trojanska kriget foregrounds the historical content of The Iliad in the paratexts and by structuring the narrative around the foundation and fall of Troy. Dalström’s paratexts stress the timelessness of the work by references to a long cultural tradition, which is reinforced by illustrations depicting artworks from different eras. Berg’s book is more richly and uniformly illustrated, and Louis Moe’s illustrations highlight the action of the tale. Furthermore, Berg and Dalström focus on different aspects when abridging the tales, which influences the depiction of gender. While both rewritings describe a patriarchal society, Berg puts greater emphasis on male relationships and heroism. The women are mainly described as passive victims of war or masculinist power structures. Dalström’s version contains a greater variety of women. The comparison makes clear that Berg’s greater interest in the historical and factual aspects of Homer’s epic may have contributed to a more conservative gender ideology. At the same time, the rapid action of Trojanska kriget together with the publication context in Barnbiblioteket Saga are probably two of the factors behind the book’s success.

The Making(s) of a Girl: Gender and Humanness in Frances Hardinge's Cuckoo Song2021In: Analize – Journal of Gender and Feminist Studies, E-ISSN 2344-2352, Vol. 30, no 16, p. 46-59Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

A common trend in modern fantasy literature for children and young adults is to describe theworld from the monster’s point of view. Frances Hardinge’s Cuckoo Song (2014) exploreswhat it means to be a girl from the perspective of a changeling. In the article, I analyze thechangeling motif with a focus on gender and humanness. The article shows how non-normativefemininity and the non-human are intertwined in the depiction of the changeling. The girl’sfeeling of otherness is portrayed through her unruly and makeshift body that threatens to betrayher by falling apart or taking control of her actions. Only by moving beyond restrictive notionsof girlhood and affirming the non-human, can a resolution be achieved. The changeling in Cuckoo Song juxtaposes the non-human with humans that have been represented as the otherin Western society, like women, children, and foreign people. Thus, the narrative sheds lighton practices of othering and the gendered, racialized, and age-specific norms of human life. Through an exploration of the effects of dehumanization, Hardinge’s novel devises a posthuman ethic underlining all creatures’ right to life.
