Läs- och skrivsvårigheter/dyslexi: Elevers studiesituation inom några yrkesförberedande gymnasieprogram2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Friluftsliv: a contribution to equity and democracy in Swedish Physical Education? An analysis of codes in Swedish Physical Education curricula2011In: Journal of Curriculum Studies, ISSN 0022-0272, E-ISSN 1366-5839, Vol. 43, no 2, p. 269-288Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

During the last decade, expanding research investigating school subject Physical Education (PE), indicates a promotion of inequalities regarding which children benefit from PE teaching. Outdoor education and its Scandinavian equivalent friluftsliv, is a part of the PE curriculum in many countries and these practices have been claimed to have the potential to contribute to more equity in PE teaching. Through an investigation of how stipulations regarding friluftsliv in the national Swedish PE curriculum are transformed and interpreted into 31 local PE syllabus documents, this paper investigates the possibilities for friluftsliv to fulfil this potential. In an analysis inspired by educational sociologist Basil Bernstein, I claim that Swedish PE teachers’ marginalised interpretation of friluftsliv indicates its weak classification when a part of PE. When friluftsliv is addressed in PE, the strong dominance of a performance code transforms it into mere sport activities. The results of this study highlight questions regarding PE teachers’ interpretation of learning aims and their work with text documents. It also discusses alternatives to implementing friluftsliv through PE and the role of teachers in curriculum reforms.

Friluftsliv in Swedish Physical Education – a Struggle of Values: Educational and Sociological Perspectives2010Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine some of the educational and sociological conditions underlying the production of teaching in friluftsliv within the Physical Education (PE) subject in Swedish compulsory school. Despite the value awarded to the Scandinavian outdoor practice friluftsliv, in both the national PE curriculum document and in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) in Sweden, it does not seem to be thoroughly implemented in compulsory school teaching. Through analyses of interviews with PE teachers and PE teacher educators, as well as of curriculum documents, using the perspectives of Basil Bernstein and Pierre Bourdieu, I explore conditions underlying the expressions of friluftsliv teaching in Swedish PE.

The pedagogic discourse for friluftsliv in Swedish PE is described as a teaching that should take place in a natural setting remote from civilisation, involve risks, and require time, technical equipment, financial resources, and cooperation. This discourse for friluftsliv is shown to be similar to the values emphasised in friluftsliv education in PETE. Although proven to be difficult to implement in school, this discourse appear to form the conception of friluftsliv teaching for PE teachers in Sweden. Under the influence of the performance code, friluftsliv is transformed into outdoor activities with which the PE teachers are familiar, or is totally left out of PE teaching.

A turn towards options that are seen as unthinkable in relation to the current pedagogic discourse may benefit the achievement of the aims set out in the national PE curriculum. Values such as environmental awareness, sustainable development and cultural perspectives on the landscape could strengthen the classification of friluftsliv and PE in compulsory school. Further, an increase of socially critical and constructivist perspectives during PETE could make unthinkable options in friluftsliv thinkable and contribute to a break with the reproduction of teaching practices in PE.

To acquire a taste for friluftsliv – a part of becoming a PE teacher?: Swedish Physical Education teacher educators’ thoughts about their students’ preferences for friluftsliv2009In: Movning Bodies, ISSN 1503-6065, Vol. 7, no 1, p. 9-26Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Teacher students’ own biographies and early experiences of teaching have proven to have a major significance for their future teaching, compared to perspectives and content in teacher education. This is also the case for Physical Education (PE) teacher students, whose preferences for physical activity are often constituted by their experiences of sport. Based on the values assigned to friluftsliv (or its anglicised equivalents, “outdoor recreation” or “outdoor education”) in Swedish Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE), the disparity between the taste of Swedish PE teacher educators’ and that of their students’ for friluftsliv is analysed. The lack of teaching in friluftsliv in Swedish schools seems to be an example of that PE teaching is mainly based on PE teachers’ taste for physical practices, rather than on the PE curriculum. In this article the potential to change this condition by developing the teaching in friluftsliv at Swedish PETE is discussed.

What frames teaching of friluftsliv?: Analysing a pedagogic discourse within Swedish PE through framing and the pedagogic deviceIn: Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning, ISSN 1472-9679, E-ISSN 1754-0402Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Research indicates that outdoor teaching practices within a Physical Education (PE) context are framed by several factors with the potential to weaken or strengthen PE teachers’ control of pedagogic messages. Drawing on 12 qualitative interviews with PE teachers in compulsory schools in Sweden, the findings in this study suggest that factors claimed to control teachers’ pedagogic communication of friluftsliv (Scandinavian equivalent to outdoor education) is based on the construction of a dominating pedagogic discourse for outdoor teaching in Swedish schools. Analysing the constitution of this discourse through Bernstein’s theoretical concepts of framing and the pedagogic device, Swedish PE teachers and PE teacher education appear to reproduce friluftsliv as a teaching practice carried out in a remote wilderness setting involving specific equipment, financial resources and a certain amount of risk. In relation to these results, alternative ways to think of outdoor teaching in relation to the achievement of the national aims in Swedish PE are discussed.

What is valued in friluftsliv within PE teacher education?: Swedish PE teacher educators’ thoughts about friluftsliv analysed through the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu2008In: Sport, Education and Society, ISSN 1357-3322, E-ISSN 1470-1243, Vol. 13, no 1, p. 61-76Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The value assigned to friluftsliv (activities similar to outdoor education) in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) and in the PE syllabus in Sweden does not seem to result in the implementation of friluftsliv in the practice of teaching in Swedish schools. This study investigates how the identified values of friluftsliv, expressed in interviews with 17 PE teacher educators in Sweden, reflect struggles for legitimate and privileged knowledge in PETE. The exploration of friluftsliv within PETE reveals positions that appear to be an effect of the dominating logic of sport within Swedish PETE and the limited influence of the academic field. The educational consequences of the identified values are analysed and discussed from a socio-cultural perspective.

Leka med erfarenheten: En studie av dramaledares hantverkskunnande2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The study's purpose is to focus craftsmanship in drama leadership and describe experienced drama teachers expertise. With a qualitative approach and a descriptive case study as method the study combines a reading of drama handbooks with participant observation and interviews. The result is discussed on the basis of theories of craftsmanship with a particular focus on Dreyfus model "from novice to expert" and Hoffman's model "from naïve to expert and master". The drama teachers staging of the drama process has been analyzed through Sternudds perspectives on drama.

The study shows that teaching drama is a craft with traces of craftsmanship within the theater and the performing arts as community of practice. Material, process, tools and product is discussed. The drama teachers in the study can be described as experts in drama leadership and teaching but also as super expert or masters because they supervise drama teacher students. The drama teachers adjust their leadership according to the situation and context and leads processes mainly within the artistically oriented perspective and the personal development perspective. They use drama components, but seldom specific drama teaching methods. Theater as expression is common. The drama teachers use several tools of drama leadership. To ask questions is a common pedagogical approach, important for a reflective process. Tools highlighted by previous research can by the studie be supplemented with the anecdote. Through the anecdote the drama teachers mediate the drama and transfer knowledge and experience to participants, colleagues and drama teacher students. The product of the dramaprocess is altered understanding and learning

    Abstract [sv]

Janus två ansikten: En studie om kökslärarens dubbla roller2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a field study based on participant observations and interviews, describing the cooking teacher's complex everyday life. The school's restaurant is a unique arena, freely hovering between two worlds: The school world and the restaurant reality. Here, the students are confronted with real situations and problems, similar to the ones occurring in a restaurant, still having the school's safety net beneath them. It is for real, but still not, a bit like a flight simulator.

It is on that arena the cooking teacher works, combining the two roles of the teacher and the chef. Two roles built on their own traditions and values. This study illustrates the fluctuations and conflicts that arise between these role changes.

With two different practices, those of the school and of the restaurant, an issue is raised by the end of the study; can you discuss in terms of different didactics? In addition to subject matter didactics and professional didactics that are recognized concepts, can we also speak in terms of vocational education didactics?

Dynamisk pedagogik: Dess tillkomst och teoribildning tecknad utifrån Dan Lipschütz livsberättelse2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The double feature of musical folkbildning: three Swedish examples2012In: British Journal of Music Education, ISSN 0265-0517, E-ISSN 1469-2104, Vol. 29, no 1, p. 65-74Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to analyse three case study examples of musical folkbildning in Sweden. The first case study is from the establishment of the state-funded Framnas Folk High Music School in the middle of the last century The second case study, Hagstrom's music education, is from the same time but describes a music school run by a private company The third case study concerns a contemporary expression of folkbildning, namely hip-hop. The theoretical framework that inspired this article stems from the work of Pierre Bourdieu. The double feature of folkbildning appears in terms of elitist and democratic tendencies, high and low taste agendas, control and freedom.

Folk som pratar o pennor som rasslar: – om hur elever med neuropsykiatrisk diagnos upplever skoltiden2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study was to get knowledge of experiences of the years in compulsory school and upper secondary school by pupils with neuropsychiatric disabilities. The questions dealt with when and where in school the pupils had difficulties connected to their neuropsychiatric disabilities, in what way they were met with understanding for their difficulties, how the school solved the problems, what the school could have done more and what qualities the pupils possessed that helped in school. I interviewed six youngsters in the ages of 18 - 21. I used half-structured interviews. The result was analysed in a sociocultural perspective and showed that the pupils had difficulties in many ways at school. Big classes and noises in the classroom made their concentration difficulties worse. Projects in school without strict directions as well as appearances before the class became huge barriers for some of the pupils, while teaching at a too low level led to a lack of motivation. In upper level of compulsory school the pupils felt stress and difficulties in finding classrooms. Some other problems were phobias, insomnia and participating in school gymnastics. Bullying and exclusion from fellowship was usual. Even teachers were insulting the pupils by indicating them as outsiders, blaming them for their difficulties and punishing them. The pupils experienced that they were mostly met with misunderstanding and a lack of knowledge from the school. Just a few teachers were sympathetic. The school mostly took measures very late and the solutions therefore became short-lived. Some of the measures made the problems even worse. The pupils told me about their strong sides that helped them through school. The result showed that smaller classes as well as teachers knowledge and ability to converse and listen to the pupils are important instruments to be able to face the problems in an early phase and create a school for all kinds of minds.

Speglar vägledningssamtal den rådande arbetsmarknaden?: Den planerade slumpens betydelse för karriärutvecklingen.2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Lärande i verksamhetsförlagd utbildning: Sjuksköterskors upplevelser av lärande under Specialistutbildning inom Anestesisjukvård2008Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Några lärares tankar om utomhuspedagogik2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Skolgården som lek- och utvecklingsmiljö: The school playground – a place for play and development2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Hur utnyttjar eleverna skolgårdsmiljön i sina aktiviteter?

Are we together?: A study about the integration of Art and Music within the education in Zambia2010Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The research had an anthropological perspective, regarding the integration of Art and Music in Zambia. By using qualitative interviews and participating observations I collected information about how some teachers in Zambia reflect about the integration of Art and Music. Through the theoretical framework I analyzed the results. The results demonstrated how the teachers were responding due to the curriculum and teacher’s guide but acting differently through the observations. The teacher’s role in Zambia is affected by the social status and of certain rules one must follow in order to behave correctly. Music and Dance are used as a result of their culture according to the teachers. The lack of financial resources seems to be one issue that explains why Arts education in form of creative material is not being used.

Instructional work in textile craft: Studies of interaction, embodiment and the making of objects2012Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The focus for this thesis is instructions and their role in guiding students’ activities and understandings in the context of textile craft. The empirical material consists of video recordings of courses in textile craft offered as part of teacher education programs. In four empirical studies, instructions directed towards competences in craft are investigated with the ambition to provide praxeological accounts of learning and instruction in domains where bodily dimensions and manual actions are prominent. The studies take an ethnomethodological approach to the study of learning and instruction. In the studies, instructions related to different stages of the making of craft objects are analysed. Study I highlights instructional work related to objects-yet-to-be and the distinction between listening to instructions as part of a lecture and listening to instructions when trying to use them for the purpose of making an object is discussed. Study II and III explore instructions in relation to developing-objects and examine instructions as a collaboration of hands and the intercorporeal dimensions of teaching and learning craft are scrutinised. In Study IV, objects-as-completed are analysed by investigating a certain way of addressing assessment as an educational topic. The manifest character of skills and understandings in craft provide specific conditions for learning and instruction. In craft education, skilled action is not just explained but also shown and established through bodily instructions that make the targeted skills available through bodily understandings of moving and touching. The bodily conduct of students comprises a resource for teachers to assess students’ understanding of the subject matter being taught as the materiality of craft activities reveal the crafters’ understanding of the activity at hand. The thesis demonstrates how skills in craft are made available to students in and through opportunities to see, feel and act in craft-specific ways.

Questions, instructions, and modes of listening in the joint production of guided action: A study of student-teacher collaboration in handicraft education2009In: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research, ISSN 0031-3831, E-ISSN 1470-1170, Vol. 53, no 5, p. 497-514Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article concerns a central issue in education as an institutional activity: instructions and their role in guiding student activities and understanding. In the study, we investigate the tensions between specifics and generalities in the joint production of guided action. This issue is explored in the context of handicraft educationor more specifically, a teacher education program in sloyd. Handicraft is particularly interesting when analysing instructions, since the purposes of instructions are often dual: (1) to bring about a broad, instructionally relevant mode of understanding artefacts (including their origin, aesthetics, etc.), and (2) to guide manual action in the production of such artefacts. In the article, a detailed analysis of an instructional sequence, which includes the production of two distinct types of embroideries, is reported. The analysis sheds light on the role of educational examples in sloyd as well as on the related issue concerning the distinctive difference between the activities of listening to instructions as part of a lecture, on the one hand, and, on the other, listening to instructions in order to be able to accomplish a task.

    Abstract [en]

The education at an advanced level of Fine Arts is dominated by students with a cultural capital from their heritage2 In strong words this will mean that students with small economic, social or cultural capital won´t apply for aesthetic high schools or even become students in art schools. This degree thesis gives a picture of how the conditions look like in reality and how the recruitment to higher artistic education is conducted. The education organisers that were interviewed in the survey established that there is a prevailing social imbalance in Stockholm.A larger use of the portfolio in high-schools could stand as a model in order to break the prevailing social imbalance. The portfolio model gives each person the space, through collecting and reflection of their own material, to find and train in self evaluation. To be able to evaluate your own person it will give perspectives on his or hers development opportunities in the understanding of itself as a part of a bigger contexts, a whole, a culture. Through the criteria that are included of the structure of the portfolio, is given a challenge in seeing new possibilities in his or her future trade's - and educational choices.

    Abstract [en]

The terms internationalization and globalization are used repeatedly in public debates about modern society at international, national and local levels. In this study I attempt to clarify these concepts and their relationships to education. The processes of internationalization in education may concern, for example, weaving aspects of internationalization into the curriculum when planning, integration in education among ethnic groups, studies abroad, and cooperation through projects, international exchange programs and work-based learning abroad. I have chosen to limit this investigation to the study of work-based learning, Lärande i arbete (LIA), abroad carried out by a number of students attending an Advanced Vocational Education Program within the field of Travel and Tourism. The purpose of this study is to investigate how students experience a period of work-based learning (LIA) abroad. Using semi-structured interviews, I have attempted to find out how students experience preparations, working at the destination and reflection on their return home, and also study the ways in which experiences vary during work-based learning. Results show that there are many similarities with regard to experiences but also differences. One interesting aspect that results show, for example, is that all students experience “having an everyday abroad” as being extremely important for their period of training abroad. There is also great variation in how students experience preparation, the type of learning acquired, and how individual students perceive their own reality in a global context

Bemötande vid psykos: En studie av bemötandeaspekter och hälsofrämjande faktorer i mötet med psykospatienter2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Bemötande vid psykosvård: Litteraturgranskning2008Student paper second term, 5 credits / 7,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to ascertain how primary school teachers would like to improve their mathematics teaching. The central questions for this research are:

    1. In what ways do teachers want to improve their mathematics teaching?
    2. How do the teachers justify their statements?
    3. What main features can be distinguished out of the teachers answers?

Three interviews and seven surveys have been used to collect information from a total of nine teachers, at one primary school. Teaching pupils from preschool to sixth grade. The results have been analysed, interpreted and discussed using a drama pedagogical perspective, inspired by a holistic approach to learning. In order to investigate connections between drama pedagogic and holistic perspectives on learning in the teachers’ answers, three main characteristics of drama pedagogic usage have been defined:

    • To embody (meaning: to act and/or create);
    • Process (meaning: learning takes time and seeks deep understanding);
    • Play (meaning: joyful activity which involves relatively little supervision by the teacher).

The results show that teachers would like to work in more practical ways, where investigative and experimental activities are more commonplace. Although not supported by all responses, a significant majority of respondents expressed belief in working methods, and reasoning about learning, with fundamental connections to a drama pedagogic and holistic perspective on learning. This thesis concludes that the teachers surveyed believe in embodiment actions as a learning medium, and that knowledge can be highlighted by the principles of process.

Studiemotivation hos elever på omvårdnadsprogrammet: En intervjustudie med elever om viktiga faktorer för studiemotivation2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    mycket maktpositionering sker grupperna emellan

Prolonged Exercise-Induced Stimulation of Skeletal Muscle Glucose Uptake Is due to Sustained Increases in Tissue Perfusion and Fractional Glucose Extraction2011In: Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, ISSN 0021-972X, E-ISSN 1945-7197, Vol. 96, no 4, p. 1085-1092Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Context: The mechanisms behind the positive effects of physical activity on glucose metabolism in skeletal muscle and the time course of the effects need to be more elucidated. Objective: The aim was to examine the prolonged effects of an acute bout of one-legged exercise on local skeletal muscle glucose utilization and tissue perfusion. Design and Setting: Interstitial glucose concentration, local tissue perfusion, glucose uptake, and effects of insulin infusion were studied 12 h after an acute bout of exercise and without prior exercise. Participants: Ten healthy subjects, five women and five men, participated in the study. Intervention: Microdialysis measurements, (133)Xe clearance, and a 2-h hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp were performed on two occasions. Main Outcome Measures: We measured interstitial glucose concentration and tissue perfusion in the quadriceps femoris muscle of both legs. Results: Tissue perfusion (3.3 +/- 0.6 ml x 100 g(-1) x min(-1) vs. 1.4 +/- 0.2 ml x 100 g(-1) x min(-1); P = 0.007) and basal glucose uptake (2.3 +/- 0.5 mu mol x 100 g(-1) x min(-1) vs. 0.9 +/- 0.2 mu mol x 100 g(-1) x min(-1); P = 0.006) were increased in the leg that had exercised compared to the resting leg; the findings in the resting leg were comparable to those in the control experiment without prior exercise. The relative effect of insulin on fractional skeletal muscle glucose uptake was the same in all experimental settings, and insulin did not affect tissue perfusion. Conclusions: The prolonged stimulatory effect of physical exercise on skeletal muscle glucose uptake was mediated via vascular effects combined with an increase in basal glucose transport independent of enhancement of insulin responses.

    Abstract [en]

In this study I have done an interview with six different teachers of theater in three different upper secondary schools in the area ofStockholm. The study describes how the teachers work in creating a theatrical performance at the school. The questions in the study were: How do the teachers create a theatrical performance in school? Which viewpoints did the teachers have about the advantage of a certain method? Are other subjects than theater involved in the performance? What do the theatherteachers think of the educational value for the pupils when creating a theatrical performance? The method is qualitative and every interview lasted for at least an hour. Because of the long duration of the interviews I used a tape recorder to register the whole information which I later transcribed in smaller parts. The answers were analyzed from an art pedagogical perspective according to the definition by Mia Sternudd.

In this study I found that all teachers worked with a written text when they created a performance. Some teachers in the study sometimes used improvisation. All teachers were working with trainings of concentration and fantasy and the foundation for them all were the techniques of Stanislavskij. Democracy of pupils was present in the creation of a performance, but usually the teacher had the last word to be told. In some of the schools the teachers worked with integration of subjects. In these cases integration usually was with Swedish or English. The cooperation with integration of subjects generally was very time-consuming. All teachers in the study thought that the creation of a theatrical performance in school creates a good cooperation and a good working climate. The teachers thought that the pupils by working with theater in school learned to cooperate, to take responsibility and to respect each other, qualities which are important when the pupils later are going to function as citizens in a democratic society.
