The politics of immortality: the funeral of an education minister and teacher unionist2019In: History of Education and Children's Literature, ISSN 1971-1093, E-ISSN 1971-1131, Vol. 14, no 1, p. 261-278Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The funeral of former Education Minister and teacher unionist Fridtjuv Berg in 1916 is analysed here from the perspective of collective remembrance. Drawing on obituaries and on media coverage depicting the funeral, this article discusses how the commemoration of Berg was an expression of two uncompleted achievements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: the rising social status of elementary school teachers and the emergence of a collective teacher identity. The funeral is analysed both as an expression of these tendencies and as an attempt to strengthen the very same tendencies, thereby counteracting the fact that the elementary school and its teachers were still haunted by a lack of social status as well as by fragmentation. Thus the funeral provided an opportunity to symbolically express cherished but precarious ideals.

    Abstract [en]

    Anna Ahlström -- The Foundress

It would take almost forty years before Swedish women with academic degrees got access to posts in the government administration, which constituted the most important labour market for their male colleagues. Dr Anna Ahlström, born 1863, was one of many women, who with great inventiveness succeeded in creating a strong position in heir professions and at the same time manged to play a strategic role in the struggle for equal rights for women with academic degrees.

The article focuses on how Anna Ahlström, during a few years at the beginning of the twentieth century not only founded one of the most esteemed private upper secondary schools for girls (Nya Elementarskolan för flickor), but also through public adresses and petitions, laid the foundations for what would become ABKF's [Swedish Association of University Women] successful activities. Of particular importance for this anniversary publication is the fact that it was Dr. Ahlström who, in March 1904, invited to the first meeting during which the work on the constitution of ABKF began, and that the meeting took place at her school, in Stockholm city centre, where she was Headmistress.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish author and visionary Carl Jonas Love Almqvist (1793–1866) was the principal for twelve years (1829–1841) of the government-initiated pilot school ”Nya Elementarskolan” (New Elementary School) in Stockholm. In this position, he argued that both the school and the state should be built on the same basic idea: the right of individual freedom. This argument is often referred to as ”personlighetsprincipen” (the principle of personality), a concept launched by another prominent figure of the liberal culture of the time, Erik Gustaf Geijer (1783–1847). This article explores how the principle of personality is expressed in the texts of Almqvist and is mainly built upon the concept’s allegorical resources. It examines the thesis that Almqvist’s use of the term is best understood if one distinguishes between the political, pedagogical, and existential dimension of the concept. The article ends with some thoughts about the context of the concept and a discussion on whether Almqvist had a greater interest in personalities than in principles.

Rektorn: En studie av en titel och dess bärare1997Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The objekt of the study is the title of rector. In Sweden this title was introduced during the Middle Ages together with the first catehedral schools. The same title is being caried into the 21st Century by all local heads of every Swedish primery and secondary school. A summery of he earliest uses of the tittle is presented but the real focus of the thesis commences in 1829 and streches out throught´ten chapters to 1993. Using concepts formulated by Bourdieu -- symbolic capital, cultural capital, habitus, etos, social field -- av chronological inteprentaion is given of how he conferrers, holders and prenders of the title have in different ways contrubuted to the redefinition of the title of rector from an exclusively male title with clear references to State Secondary Schools to a title common to all schoool forms, held primarily by women. The emerical base of the study consists of a comparative study of the profeessional journals that have represented the title hoöders and the pretenders ever since the close of the 19th Century. The closing four chapters of the thesis eal with the central themes og authoruty. masculinity, the nation-sate and the vision of future that through te ages have been a mark og the struggles around the title of rector.

    Abstract [en]

Cultural Fields. Donald Broady (Ed.) (476 p): "This collection of papers presents studies by Nordic scholars in the humanities and social sciences who are putting Pierre Bourdieu's concept of "cultural field" to the test in empirical and historical research. The authors represents disciplines as diverse as the history of litterature, art history, sociology, ethnology, social anthropology, political science, education, American studies and media studies. The papers are devoted to people like artists, authors, dansers, intellectuals and priests, who in some sense produce culture, process symbolic capital, and take up positions and follow trajectories within different cultural fields. One main focus is on the genesis, structure and effects of the cultural fields themselves. A key question concerns the degree of autonomy of various field or subfields and their relations to each other."
