    Basic Monetary Economics2017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This is an introduction to money and the workings of the financial system. The creation of money is discussed in detail in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 explains how international payments can add to money creation but also generate a new type of money, usually called Eurodollars. Basic securities are defined and characterized in Chapter 3, namely bills, bonds and shares, but basic derivatives, like futures, swaps, and options, are also discussed. Chapter 4 deals with pricing by banks when extending loans, but also with price formation in markets for securities. Chapter 5 surveys possible threats to the financial system and discusses three different approaches to the problem of stabilizing it, namely crisis management, regulation, and structural reforms.

Labour demand and real wages2017Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper shows that the traditional model of labour demand in a firm is incomplete and that the determinants of labour demand in a complete model include the demand for the firm’s products but not the real wage.

Market Sharing and Price Leadership2009Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper proposes an alternative to the traditional model of supply and demand in markets where consumers take prices as given. Within the framework of “no side payments and partial preplay communication” firms are assumed to decide non-cooperatively on production and marketing while the market price is set by a competitive price leader, i.e. a firm preferring the lowest market price. Predictions include excess supply and a revenuemaximizing market price in markets where production precedes sales. In markets where sales precede production competitive price leadership predicts monopoly pricing but not necessarily monopoly profits if firms are “sufficiently similar”, while the presence of firms with high costs or low capacities will make it possible for the price leader, in some circumstances, to increase its market share and also its profits by reducing its price. And the threat of costly competition for market shares may reduce the market price even for identical firms.

Measuring the Effect of Matching Problems on Unemployment2018In: International labour review (Print), ISSN 0020-7780, E-ISSN 1564-913XArticle in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper shows how matching problems reduce employment – and hence also raise unemployment – by creating a gap between labour demand and employment. It also shows how this gap can be measured by unfilled jobs (unmet demand) as distinct from job vacancies (recruitment processes) and reports results from a vacancy survey which measures both. In fact, while a shift of the matching function indicating longer recruitment times suggests increasing matching problems, it is only the measurement of unfilled jobs which can verify this and at the same time quantify the effect on unemployment.

Om grundutbildningen i nationalekonomi2018In: Ekonomisk Debatt, ISSN 0345-2646, Vol. 46, no 6, p. 46-56Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Pricing and price competition in consumer markets2017In: Journal of Economics, ISSN 0931-8658, E-ISSN 1617-7134, Vol. 120, no 2, p. 119-133Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper offers a simple model of the price mechanism in markets where buyers take prices as given and prices are set by sellers, as in most consumer markets. It explains price competition by arguing that a market price goes down if-and only if-a price cut appears profitable to a firm even if its competitors follow suit. It also explains why markets do not always clear, that is, why production can be restricted by sales and not capacity at prices set by firms.

Pricing and production in consumer markets where sales depend on production2017In: Economics Letters, ISSN 0165-1765, E-ISSN 1873-7374, Vol. 154, p. 17-19Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with consumer markets where sales depend on production. Assuming that a firm's sale is proportional to its production, it shows that a price leader will set a price which maximizes its industry's revenues in market's with many small firms, independent of their cost functions.

    Unemployment and Vacancies2009Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

How can vacancy statistics be used to measure friction in job matching and the effects of friction on unemployment? First, measure deviations from instantaneous hirings by the average duration of recruitment as measured by the number of job vacancies divided by the number of hirings per month. Second, measure direct effects of recruitment times on employment by measuring unfilled jobs, defined as unoccupied job vacancies which are available immediately. Third, measure indirect effects of recruitment times on employment by estimating first the effect of recruitment times on product prices and then the effect of a price change on sales, production and employment. Fourth, measure ‘search ineffectiveness’ with potential effects on the NAIRU by the rate of unfilled jobs.
