    Abstract [es]

Abstract: The study consists of a close reading of two short stories by Carmen Laforet published in 1952, "La muerta" and "El veraneo", in order to bring out characteristic features of the poetics and general aesthetics of the writer that have not been observed to date. Thus, Laforet's work is seen as a tension between the contingent post-war situation under the phallocentric francoist regime with a focus on the unequal situation of women and the transcendent vital feminine experience that underlies her texts. Keywords: Laforet; contingency; transcendence; short stories; feminism.

    Abstract [en]

The work raises the relevance of the essay and literary production of Juan Benet (1927-1993) as dissent and resistance to intellectual poverty in post-war Spain. Although there are authors who consider their aesthetic formalism as elitist and far from social reality, we intend to show how this position constitutes an ethic of dissensus and resistance with respect to the factual power and a continuity with the richness and cultural plurality under the previous Republic. It is argued that the primary method used by the author is dialogism, the text constituting a kind of battleground of ideas in opposition and in continuous struggle. Finally, Benet’s critical thinking also serves as a bridge in the democratic construction of the country in the 1970s, but it is also seen as very topical in the crisis of values in today’s world.

Revista de Estudios Hispánicos, E-ISSN 2255-4505, Vol. 8, no 1, p. 193-207Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Through an interview published shortly after the appearance of Spain, Manuel Vilas himself affirmed that one of the main issues that arise from the reading of his book is identity. This ironic, polyhedral and fragmented novel becomes a clear literary and intellectual exercise destined, among other things, to explore the limits of a complex social and cultural identity. This complexity is based on multiple variants, but in the article we will specifically attend to all those related to the literary and contextual problems. In that sense, Spain is a clear example of the way in which literary discourses generate, through the choice of a concrete aesthetic form, the representation of the different levels of a problematic cultural identity construction process.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

“In the light of the flame of a candle”: Juan José Plans and horror on the waves

Fiction works produced in Spain have traditionally been attributed a realistic nature. Recent names and works show the inaccuracy of that image and a reconsideration of the canon of past centuries is now taking place. With a growing presence in the academic environment, the studies on the fantastic in the Spanish domain carry out an important work of restoration of key figures of this marginalized line. This study, which is part of a broader research project, pursues the same reinterpretation objective, focusing on one of the authors whose contribution has been crucial for the spreading of the imaginative genres in Spain: Juan José Plans (1943-2014). Through the scrutiny of his radio shows Sobrenatural and Historias, we aim to leave proof of his relevance with regard to the revitalization of this parcel in Spanish contemporary culture.
