Pangs of love and longing: configurations of desire in premodern literature2013Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The complex relationship between psychic structures, social norms, and aesthetic representations is a challenge for every analysis of the historical manifestations of human desire. Pangs of Love and Longing: Configurations of Desire in Premodern Literature sets out to provide a deeper understanding of this relation by an assessment of linguistic and artistic configurations of desire in European literature from Antiquity to the Early Modern period. The aim is to explore historic continuities and ruptures in attitudes towards sexuality, pleasures and bodies, as these are represented in a variety of cultural forms, in order to demonstrate the plurality of premodern desire – and, ultimately, to offer fresh perspectives on our present reality. The seventeen scholars participating in the anthology bring together theories and assessments from different areas of the Humanities – German, French, Italian, Spanish, English, and Comparative Literature, History of Ideas and of Art, Theology, Philosophy and Gender Studies. They are all engaged in cross-disciplinary activities at universities in Sweden, Norway and Denmark, and they all participate in the Scandinavian network “Configurations of Desire in Premodern Literature” initiated in 2010.

    Abstract [en]

Examines the Swedenborg-Emerson-Whitman connection and especially the more direct Swedenborg-Whitman relation, tracking Whitman's striking comments on Swedenborg and suggesting that the poetic language of Leaves of Grass may partly reflect the doctrine of correspondences. Read in terms of current contemporary hermeneutics the title means "Truths of what is alive in man".

    Abstract [en]

Examines the Swedenborg-Emerson-Whitman connection and especially the more direct Swedenborg-Whitman relation, tracking Whitman's comments on Swedenborg and suggesting that Whitman's title Leaves of Grass may have come from the comprehensive English dictionaries of Correspondences compiled from Swedenborg's writings by George Nicholson in 1800, a revised edition of which was published in Boston in 1841 and listed "grass" as signifying "what is alive in man," and listed "leaves" as "truths," suggesting that Whitman's title may mean "Truths of What is Alive in Man".

Aladdins lampa1983In: Värld och vetande, ISSN 0346-4873, no 10, p. 289-296Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

Setting out from a detailed examination of a just previously unearthed two-thousand-year-old oil lamp from Syria—from the time when the country was a Roman province—the author discusses the dynamics of cultural development. Lighting and enlightenment are closely linked, and oil lamps are found from all parts of the world and have been used for millennia up to our own time. The object's name ‘lamp’ in modern European languages is derived from the ancient Greek origin of our civilization, and the artefact epitomises a source of illumination which has a hidden enchantment like the magic lamp of Aladdin in the Arabian Nights.

    Abstract [en]

Based on previously neglected manuscript sources this paper illustrates the pioneering journalist Johan Johansson’s remarkable esteem of the philosophers Höijer and Hegel along with his abhorrence of contemporary Romanticists and materialists. It furthermore shows that Johansson was the mystifying target ”Herman Redivivus” of Viktor Rydberg’s polemics in the daily Göteborgs Handels- och Sjöfartstidning in 1858. — Johan Johansson (1792-1860) was the cofounder and editor of the Argus, the most important Swedish journal in the 1820s. The author and politician August Blanche eulogized him as the father of the free press, “publicitetens fader i Sverige”.

In the extensive note book written by Pehr Osbeck (1723-1805), the world traveler, from his student years in 1746-47, now in the collections of the Swedish Medical Society, we can follow how his professor methodically developed his theory of diseases with particular reference to the fourth class, morbi mentales, mental illnesses. This class is subdivided into special orders, just like the flora, the first of which deals with deficiencies in judgment, morbi judiciales. Other orders concern imagination (imaginatio) and the will / desire (voluntas). In their turn, these are divided into sub-groups (genera).
