    Abstract [sv]

Mångkulturell barn- och ungdomslitteratur   : Analyser2017Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

ABC for Father and Mother and Me. Representations of children as consumers in the picturebook of the interwar period2016In: Problemy Wczesnej Edukacji, ISSN 1734-1582, Vol. 3, no 34, 22-35 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines how the child consumer is represented in a selection of branded picturebooks at the beginning of the 20th century. By analyzing children’s books published by a commercial chain of stores, the Cooperation Union, the article discusses how depictions of children as consumers are connected to the development of the emerging mass market and consumer society. The new ideas and marketing strategies expressed in these books also coincide with fundamental social changes in society, resulting from modernity and new technologies. Although the Cooperation books were designed for children and used familiar narrative techniques and motifs within children’s literature, I will argue that the books had a twofold audience. They were not only aimed at children but also at their parents. Representations of children as consumers in the studied material suggest that consumption is strongly connected to ideas of modernity and to representations of the modern child, but also that consumption is described as an inseparable part of the modern, urban experience.

Berättelser om ljus och mörker: Zinken Hopps Trollkrittet2003In: Tidskrift för litteraturvetenskap, Vol. 32, no 4, 67-79 p.Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Bokstäverna träder in på scenen: den parodiska alfabetetsbokens ord och bilder2007In: Dansklærerforeningens tidsskriftArticle in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [sv]

Einar Nerman: from the picturebook page to the avant-garde stage2015In: Children's literature and the avant-garde / [ed] Elina Druker, Bettina Kümmerling-Meibauer, Amsterdam: John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2015, 45-64 p.Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish artist Einar Nerman (1888 – 1983) had a long career as caricature artist and commercial graphic artist in both Europe and the United States. His illustrations, posters and picturebooks show continuous interplay with different forms of art and media. In this article,  recurring motifs and techniques in Nerman’s early picturebooks Crow’s Dream (1911) and Knight Finn Komfusenfej (1923) are analysed, together with his commercial works and dance productions. By discussing his picturebooks as a part of his artistic production alongside caricatures, dance and theatre productions, an interaction is demonstrated, a dynamic relationship that takes place between picturebook aesthetics and other areas of the arts in Nerman’s work. This kind of interaction between different media from both high and mass culture will also raise the question about the concept of the “avant-garde”.

Eva Billow: bilderbokskonstnär och författare 2014 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The essay analyses fictional maps as intertextual and metafictional figures in literature by examining Lewis Carroll’s The Hunting of the Snark and Tove Jansson’s novel Moominpappa and the Sea. Both stories include fictive maps that connect to cartographic traditions in different ways, but most importantly are used as symbols for adventure, power and control – or the lack of all above.

Picturebook as Conceptual Space: Spatial transformation in Tove Jansson’s Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My2006In: From Colonialism to the Contemporary: Intertextual Transformation in World Children's and Youth Literature, Cambridge Scholars Press, New York , 2006Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

When picturebook characters play with the borders of their fictional space, the page can function as a stage, as a game of hide-and-seek, or as a map of unknown territories. Playing with and questioning the fictional illusion draws attention to the means of communication. High-lighting the conventions of reading, the concept of the book and the page makes us aware of the book as a whole and of its materiality. Such self-consciousness within the picturebook medium is expressed on many levels. Discussing examples of intertextual and metafictional play in Tove Jansson's The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My, Druker illustrates how self-reflectivity involves playful humour and philosophical interrogations of literature and art, of fiction and reality. Spatiality and temporality are key issues in this article, where the construction of the picturebook and the concept of the book as such are examined.

The compilation of From Colonialism to the Contemporary: Intertextual Transformation in World Children's and Youth Literature has been constructed to convey the essence of its title. In other words, the different chapters have been selected and ordered to illustrate the chronological effects surrounding the phenomenon of Children’s and Youth Literature. While this selection of essays as a whole does not seek to provide an exhaustive historical analysis of literature surrounding and written for children, it does seek to highlight several points in time that will give the reader a sound understanding of certain shifts in ideology found in children’s literature.

    Abstract [sv]

Staging the Illusive: Self-Reflective Images in Tove Jansson's Novels2007In: Tove Jansson Rediscovered, Cambridge Scholars Press, London , 2007Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Self-reflective focus on the work of art brings to the fore the elements of the image, its margins and frames, and so constitutes a structural investigation of the medium. In Tove Jansson Moominpappa at Sea (1965) the members of the Moomin family leave their home behind and move to an island far out to sea, taking up residence in a seemingly abandoned lighthouse. Thrown out of their familiar roles and routines, the characters discover unexpected things about themselves. The discoveries are often emotionally traumatic, as the sense of self is put under threat. The complexity and instability of the spatial and temporal relations in Moominpappa at Sea express an underlying sense of insecurity. To illustrate this process, this article considers two examples―Moominpappa’s maps and Moominmamma’s mural, comparing the latter with the role of the wall coverings in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s story “The Yellow Wallpaper” (1892). These transformations of the landscape―whether as intriguing maps or drawings that are brought to life―visualise and stage unrevealed emotions, dreams and fears. Focusing on the material qualities of the image can also point towards a conflict between the fictive world and the world outside it.

The Animated Still Life: Ingrid Vang Nyman’s Use of Self-Contradictory Spatial Order in Pippi Longstocking2007In: Barnboken, Vol. 1-2, 57-65 p.Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

Ingrid Vang Nyman’s illustrations to Astrid Lindgren's Pippi Longstocking seem to disobey customary perspective logic. The deviation from linear perspective in the illustrations alters the settings and points to the adventurous potential of every day places and objects. The way pictorial perspective is used, in particular perspective that has been toyed with, has a fundamental function in painting and has often signalled a shift or a turning point. The article discusses the innovative use of pictorial effects and places this technique to a larger context in art history.

    Abstract [en]

Astrid Lindgren and Anna Riwkin-Brick’s series of photographic picturebooks about children from different countries aimed to promote tolerance and international understanding through children’s literature. They represent a very specific tendency within the modernist turn in Nordic children’s literature and furthermore demonstrate how children and childhood are depicted and constructed not only in this specific part of Astrid Lindgren’s production but also in Nordic children’s literature in general. In this artictle, I will analyze the use of photographic images in picturebooks as a part of an aesthetic and ideological context in the decades following the Second World War.

Äta eller ätas ?: Måltiden i litteraturen2010In: Opsis barnkultur, ISSN 2000-3277, no 4, 40-43 p.Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

Children’s Literature and the Avant-Garde2015Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Children’s Literature and the Avant-Garde is the first study that investigates the intricate influence of the avant-garde movements on children’s literature in different countries from the beginning of the 20th century until the present. Examining a wide range of children’s books from Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the USA, the individual chapters explore the historical as well as the cultural and political aspects that determine the exceptional character of avant-garde children’s books. Drawing on studies in children’s literature research, art history, and cultural studies, this volume provides comprehensive insights into the close relationships between avant-garde children’s literature, images of childhood, and contemporary ideas of education. Addressing topics such as the impact of exhibitions, the significance of the Bauhaus, and the influence of poster art and graphic design, the book illustrates the broad range of issues associated with avant-garde children’s books. More than 60 full-color illustrations demonstrate the impressive variety of design in avant-garde picturebooks and children’s books.
