    From movements to sound Contributions to building the BB speech production system2006Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    In terms of anatomical geometry the infant Vocal Tract undergoes significant change during development. This research note reports an attempt to reconstruct an infant VT from adult data. Comparable landmarks were identified on the fixed structures of adult articulatory lateral profiles (obtained from X-ray images) and matching infant profiles (obtained from published data in the literature, Sobotta [Putz & Pabst 2001, and personal communication from author Prof. Dr. med. R. Pabst]. The x-coordinates of the infant landmarks could be accurately derived by a linear scaling of the adult data whereas the y-values required information on both the x- and the y-coordinates of the adult. These scaling rules were applied to about 400 adult articulatory profiles to derive a set of corresponding infant articulations. A Principal Components Analysis was performed on these shapes to compare the shapes of the infant and adult articulatory spaces. As expected from the scaling results the infant space is significantly compressed in relation to the adult space suggesting that the main articulatory degree of freedom for the child is jaw opening. This finding is in perfect agreement with published descriptions of the phonetics of early vocalizations.

    3rd party observer gaze as a continuous measure of dialogue flow2012Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    We present an attempt at using 3rd party observer gaze to get a measure of how appropriate each segment in a dialogue is for a speaker change. The method is a step away from the current dependency of speaker turns or talkspurts towards a more general view of speaker changes. We show that 3rd party observers do indeed largely look at the same thing (the speaker), and how this can be captured and utilized to provide insights into human communication. In addition, the results also suggest that there might be differences in the distribution of 3rd party observer gaze depending on how information-rich an utterance is.

    Abstract [en]

    MMN is an ERP component that reflects preattentive discrimination between a recurring standard sound and a deviating sound. MMN is frequently used in infant studies focused on speech development since its elicitation does not require the attention of the child. The general ability of infants to discriminate speech sounds is gradually specialized towards discrimination of phonetic contrasts in their mother tongue. The aim of the present study was to examine if an MMN response is elicited by naturally varying speech stimuli (/ ti/ and / ki/) and if this response is stronger for the speech sound that infants typically produce at this age (/ t/). An EEG experiment with an oddball paradigm was designed. Participants were 19 infants (9-mo). An MMN-like negative response to deviants compared to standards was found, however it was not statistically significant. No significant interaction effect was found for MMN and type of deviant stimulus. Variation in the standard stimuli may have contributed to the lack of effect. It is also possible that the infants already were equally competent in discriminating both speech sounds, which may account for the small difference between the deviant waveforms.

    The MINT-project is a longitudinal study of verbal and nonverbal interaction between 73 Swedish children and their parents, recorded in lab environment from 3 months to 3 years of age. The overall goal of the project is to deepen our understanding of how language acquisition takes place in a multimodal and interactional framework.

    In my talk I will present a study on neural processing of voices. The aim was to investigate the possibility of using ERPs as a measure of recognition of a familiar voice. The methodology however raises questions concerning pre-attentive processing of voices. I will present the study on voice familiarity and discuss the typical MMN (Mismatch Negativity) that was found in relation to voices, but not to familiarization. Acoustic analysis of voice characteristics in the current study as well as follow up studies with controlled exposure and voice parameters will also be addressed. I would like to discuss these issues with you, and also the implications of a possible MMN to familiar voices.

    The language learning infant: Effects of speech input, vocal output, and feedback2009Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis studies the characteristics of the acoustic signal in speech, especially in speech directed to infants and in infant vocal development, to gain insight on essential aspects of speech processing, speech production and communicative interaction in early language acquisition. Three sets of experimental studies are presented in this thesis. From a phonetic point of view they investigate the fundamental processes involved in first language acquisition.

    The first set (study 1.1 and study 1.2) investigated how linguistic structure in the speech signal can be derived and which strategy infants and adults use to process information depending on its presentation. The second set (study 2.1 and study 2.2) studied acoustic consequences of the anatomical geometry of the infant vocal tract and the development of sensory-motor control for articulatory strategies. The third set of studies (study 3.1 and study 3.2) explored the infant's interaction with the linguistic environment, specifically how vocal imitation and reinforcement may assist infants to converge towards adult-like speech.

    The first set of studies suggests that structure and quality of simultaneous sensory input impact on the establishment of initial linguistic representations. The second set indicates that the anatomy of the infant vocal tract does not constrain the production of adult-like speech sounds and that some degree of articulatory motor control is present from six months of age. The third set of studies suggests that the adult interprets and reinforces vocalizations produced by the infant in a developmentally-adjusted fashion that can guide the infant towards the sounds of the ambient language. The results are discussed in terms of essential aspects of early speech processing and speech production that can be accounted for by biological general purpose mechanisms in the language learning infant.

    Brain responses to familiar and unfamiliar voices were investigated with ERPs (Event Related Potentials). Presentation of a stream of one syllable utterances from a female voice established a standard expectation, and similar samples from four other male voices where inserted as unexpected deviants in a typical mismatch paradigm. The participants were 12 students from the basic course in linguistics. Two of the deviant voices were familiar voices of their teachers. The two other deviant voices were matched (same age, sex and dialect) but unfamiliar to the participants. A typical MMN (Mismatch Negativity) was elicited, i.e. a more negative response to the deviants compared to the standards. In contrast to verbal reports, where only one participant identified any of the deviant voices, the MMN response differed on group level between familiar and unfamiliar voices. MMN to familiar voices was larger. Using teachers' voices ensured naturalistic long term exposure, but did not allow for random assignment to conditions of familiarity making the design quasi-experimental. Thus acoustic analysis of voice characteristics as well as follow up studies with randomized exposure to voices are needed to rule out possible confounds and establish a causal effect of voice familiarity.

    Assessing language acquisition from parent-child interaction: An event-related potential study on perception of intonation contours in infancy2013Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this paper is to present our multidisciplinary project to study parent-child interaction. The goal of the project is to identify, test, and simulate components of child and adult speechand gestures and the consequences they might have on child language acquisition. Since typical parent-child interaction is built upon both interlocutors’ intention-reading, responsiveness to joint-attention, and imitation of speech/gestures, we make video recordings along with recordings of speech data to grasp the integration of semantic and pragmatic aspects of language acquisition. The understanding of parent-child interaction benefits further frominformation on brain activation involved in speech processing. As a first step to achieve the project goals, an electroencephalography/event-related potential (EEG/ERP) study exploring children’s early perception of intonation contours involved in human interactions was performed. This paper discusses the characteristics of integration of multimodal social-emotional (speech,prosody, faces, posture) signals as part of the dynamics of communication in typically developing children. Possible application fields are social signal processing (SSP; an emerging research domain that aims to provide computers ability to understand human social signals), and improvement of diagnosis of late or atypical language development in pathologies that affect the dynamics of social interaction (such as autism spectrum disorders).

    Abstract [en]

    This paper presents a study of vocal imitation during the early stages of the language acquisition process. Utterances were extracted from recordings of adult-infant interactions in controlled but naturalistic experimental settings. For each recording session, utterances were used to create pairs of adult-infant samples that were presented to a panel of listeners, whose task was to judge whether the samples in a pair could be considered as imitations of each other or not. The results suggest an age-dependent hierarchy for the impact of different phonetic dimensions on imitation judgments and provide a basis for a quantitative model of vocal imitation.

    Neural processing of familiar and unfamiliar voices2012Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    In this paper we present a pilot study on neural processing of familiar and unfamiliar voices in adults. This is the first of a series of experiments we plan to perform to examine how general biological mechanisms and linguistic experience might interact during voice recognition, from birth up until adulthood. We have chosen to measure ERPs1 during voice presentation because it allows for an experimental setup suitable for both adults and infants (in future studies). Furthermore it captures the subject’s reaction to stimuli in both the sensory pathways and cognitive processing. In the current study our intention was to examine adults’ responses to familiar and unfamiliar voices as well as to evaluate the experimental design for our future studies.

    Abstract [en]

    The concept of imitation is often pointed out as one of the cornerstones in infants' early language acquisition. Still there are few studies concerning vocal adult-child imitations reported in the literature and results from those are often inconsistent. One reason for the inconsistencies is the lack of a stringent model for what should be classified as imitations. This is not only a problem when trying to learn something about adult-child interactions, but also when trying to make robots that can learn to interact naturally with humans. In order to interact vocally a robot is typically equipped with artificial models of the ear and the vocal tract connected by an artificial neural network. This model is inspired by the motor theory of speech perception [1] and the more recent discovery of mirror neurons [2]. While the robot can use babbling to create an initial map between the acoustic signal and the corresponding vocal tract positions, it needs to overcome interspeaker differences and to acquire key positions of the vocal tract to be able to communicate with humans or other robots. Imitation games are therefore used to train the networks [3, 4, 5]. As we have shown in our previous work [6] these imitation games should preferably go both ways. Having the robot imitating the caregiver is useful for directing the robot towards keypoints, while having the caregiver imitating the robot is more important for learning the map and overcome interspeaker differences. As we will show in this work, both types of imitations can also be found in adult-child interactions. However, while robots usually follow very strict imitation games with predefined turn-taking behaviors, adult-child interactions tend to be much more complex. For the robot to be able to learn its maps under such natural conditions it has to be able to separate imitations from non-imitations. The question we want to answer in this work is therefore the following. How can the robot decide when a pair of utterances should be considered as vocal imitations of each other?

    In this work we propose a methodology for language acquisition in humanoid robots that mimics that in children. Language acquisition is a complex process that involves mastering several different tasks, such as producing speech sounds, learning how to group different sounds into a consistent and manageable number of classes or speech units, grounding speech, and recognizing the speech sounds when uttered by other persons. While it is not known to which extent those abilities are learned or written in our genetic code, this work aims at two intertwined goals: (i) to investigate how much of linguistic structure that can be derived directly from the speech signal directed to infants by (ii) designing, building and testing biological plausible models for language acquisition in a humanoid robot. We have therefore chosen to avoid implementing any pre-programmed linguistic knowledge, such as phonemes, into these models. Instead we rely on general methods such as pattern matching and hierarchical clustering techniques, and show that it is possible to acquire important linguistic structures directly from the speech signal through the interaction with a caregiver. We also show that this process can be facilitated through the use of motor learning.

    Abstract [en]

    In this work we propose a methodology for language acquisition in humanoid robots that mimics that in children. Language acquisition is a complex process that involves mastering several different tasks, such as producing speech sounds, learning how to group different sounds into a consistent and manageable number of classes or speech units, grounding speech, and recognizing the speech sounds when uttered by other persons. While it is not known to which extent those abilities are learned or written in our genetic code, this work aims at two intertwined goals: (i) to investigate how much of linguistic structure that can be derived directly from the speech signal directed to infants by (ii) designing, building and testing biological plausible models for language acquisition in a humanoid robot. We have therefore chosen to avoid implementing any pre-programmed linguistic knowledge, such as phonemes, into these models. Instead we rely on general methods such as pattern matching and hierarchical clustering techniques, and show that it is possible to acquire important linguistic structures directly from the speech signal through the interaction with a caregiver. We also show that this process can be facilitated through the use of motor learning.

    When adults talk to infants they do that in a different way compared to how they communicate with other adults. This kind of Infant Directed Speech (IDS) typically highlights target words using focal stress and utterance final position. Also, speech directed to infants often refers to objects, people and events in the world surrounding the infant. Because of this, the sound sequences the infant hears are very likely to co-occur with actual objects or events in the infant's visual field. In this work we present a model that is able to learn word-like structures from multimodal information sources without any pre-programmed linguistic knowlege, by taking advantage of the characteristics of IDS. The model is implemented on a humanoid robot platform and is able to extract word-like patterns and associating these to objects in the visual surrounding.

    The Stockholm Babylab Multimodal Approach: Modelling Infant Language Acquisition Longitudinally from Parent-Child Interaction2013Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

    Auditory communicative interaction is in general best analyzed with the help of simultaneously recorded visual information about discourse objects and the positioning of interlocutors in space. Access to visual information is even more important in parent-child interaction since this type of communica-tion is largely based on use of contextual gestures, gaze and imitation. The un-derstanding of parent-child interaction benefits further from information on brain activation involved in speech processing. This paper introduces the Stockholm Babylab approach to study multimodal language learning in typi-cally developing infants and young children. Our effort is to build a multimodal corpus that incorporates EEG (electroencephalography) data in the model. Ap-plication fields are social signal processing (SSP), improvement of diagnosis of late or atypical language development, and further development of habilitation methods for individuals with neurocognitive and language deficits.

    The paper addresses the issue of extraction of implicit information conveyed by systematic audio-visual contingencies. A group of infants was tested, with help of the Eye-Tracking analysis system, on a simple inference task provided by short film sequences. The video sequences displayed geometrical objects while the audio played two-word utterances, spoken in an artificial language mimicking the Swedish phonotactics, implicitly referring to the different shapes and colours of the objects. The films were initiated with a static baseline image where the display was divided in four quadrants showing four objects, one in each quadrant. This initial procedure was intended to measure the subject’s spontaneous looking preference towards each of the objects.  Finally after the exposure phase, a test phase was initiated where questions equivalent to “Can you see a cube?” or “Can you see the red (one)?” spoken in the artificial language were asked. At this point the results suggest that the subjects are efficient at picking up the underlying information structure. Further analyses are expected to show more differentiated picture regarding the performance of infants of different age as well as generalization of nouns and adjectives. This is currently being analyzed and will be reported at the conference.

    The aim of this study was to assess development of communicative skills in 8- to 16-month-old children. Information on 24 Swedish children’s speech comprehension and production, as well as their utilization of communicative gestures was collected. A version of the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory, the Swedish Early Communicative Development Inventory (SECDI), was used. The number of comprehended phrases, size of receptive and productive vocabularies, as well as the subjects’ gesture score was estimated according to standardized scoring instructions. The study was performed longitudinally based on 71 completed forms. The children’s performance was validated with existing norm-data collected from a large set of randomly selected children. The results showed an overall agreement with the norm-data. The performance of the subjects was though less stable and delayed about one month was compared to the norm-data. Adequacy of SECDI for screening language delay is discussed.

    To explore the processes underlying early sound-meaning connections an artificial language was created and used in a series of infant speech perception studies. The subjects were tested using the Visual Preference Procedure. The subjects’ responses were quantified in terms of looking times towards objects shown during the audio-visual exposure. Exposure to speech materials with large variance seemed to curtail the subjects’ ability to establish stable sound-meaning connections. However, reducing the linguistic variance led to successful sound-meaning connections. These results indicate that linguistic variance is one of the primary determinants of sound-meaning connections for 1-year old subjects. The paper will discuss how structural differences in natural language settings may account for the infant’s performance on word learning.

    This paper describes a method to study the infant’s ability to predict the consequences of its vocalizations and presents the first results of the on-going investigation. The research method uses a voice-controlled device, with which the infant may control the position of a figure on a screen, in combination with an eye-tracking system (Tobii) that simultaneously registers the infant’s gaze fixations on the screen where the figure appears. The preliminary results indicate that 12.5 month-old infants seem to be able to predict the consequences of their vocalizations as indicated by the decrease in the mismatch between the infant’s gaze position and the location at which the figure is displayed as a function of the infant’s F0.     This paper presents results from experimental studies on early language acquisition in infants and attempts to interpret the experimental results within the framework of the Ecological Theory of Language Acquisition (ETLA) recently proposed by (Lacerda et al., 2004a). From this perspective, the infant's first steps in the acquisition of the ambient language are seen as a consequence of the infant's general capacity to represent sensory input and the infant's interaction with other actors in its immediate ecological environment. On the basis of available experimental evidence, it will be argued that ETLA offers a productive alternative to traditional descriptive views of the language acquisition process by presenting an operative model of how early linguistic function may emerge through interaction.

    Previous fMRI and PET studies indicated left hemispheric activation for the processing of speech and phonetic features, and right hemispheric activation for the processing of emotions and melody. EEG measures are not commonly employed in lateralisation research, neither has lateralisation been extensively investigated in a developmental perspective. This study aims to fill this gap. Although ERP measures cannot precisely localize task-activated cortical regions, differences in voltage reflect scalp electricity in response to the activation of a distinct neural network (Giard et al., 1995). With EEG, we study the lateralisation of speech processing in 4- and 9-month-olds and adults in two conditions, spoken sentences and their spectrally rotated version. Rotating is a technique to render speech intelligible while preserving language-specific characteristics such as rhythm. A previous EEG study showed no lateralisation in 4-month-olds for the processing of speech versus nonspeech sounds as measured with 65 electrodes (Dehaene-Lambertz, 2000). For refined measurement, we employ 128 electrodes and use infant-directed speech stimuli for both conditions. It has been established that language comprehension tasks elicit bilateral hemispheric activation (Awad, Warren, Scott, Turkheimer, & Wise, 2007; Davis et al., 2007), showing intrahemispheric localisation differences within the left hemisphere for phonetic features and comprehension in speech processing tasks (Obleser, Zimmermann, Van Meter, & Rauschecker, 2007; Scott, Blank, Rosen, & Wise, 2000). As sentence comprehension increases with age, we predict an increase of activation in the left hemisphere when comparing 4- to 9-month-olds and 9-month-olds to adults. The melodic and emotional components of the infant-directed speech stimuli should elicit right-hemispheric activation which is predicted to decrease with age. Therefore, the measured differences between left- and right-hemispheric activation are predicted to increase with age. Left-hemispheric activation is also expected for the rotated speech condition due to the speech-likeness of the stimuli, however to a lesser degree than in the natural sentence condition (Ischebeck, Friederici, & Alter, 2007). This activation difference between the speech and rotated speech conditions should also increase with age as comprehension increases. The results are presented in regard to these hypotheses and discussed in the light of recent research.

    Parental responsive behaviour in communication has a positive effect on child speech and language development. Absence of canonical babbling (CB) in 10–month–old infants is considered a risk factor for developmental difficulties, yet little is known about parental responsiveness in this group of children. The purpose of the current study was to examine proportion and type of parental responsive utterances after CB and vocalization utterances respectively in a clinical group of children with otitis media with effusion, with or without cleft palate. Audio-video recordings of interactions in free play situations with 22 parents and their 10-month-old infants were used, where 15 infants had reached the CB stage and 7 infants had not. Fifty consecutive child utterances were annotated and categorized as vocalization utterance or CB utterance. The parent’s following contingent response was annotated and labelled as acknowledgements, follow-in comments, imitations/expansions or directives. The Average intra-judge agreement was 90%, and the average inter-judger agreement was 84%. There was no significant difference in proportion contingent responses after vocalizations and CB, neither when considering all child utterances nor the child’s babbling stage. However, imitations/expansions tended to be more common after CB in the typical babbling group, whereas acknowledgements were more common after CB in the late babbling group. Our findings imply that responsiveness is a supportive strategy that is not fully used by parents of children with late babbling. Implications for further research as well as parent-directed intervention for children in clinical groups with late babbling are suggested.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of the present study was to introduce a computational simulation of timing in child-adult interaction. The simulation uses temporal information from real adult-child interactions as default temporal behavior of two simulated agents. Dependencies between the agents’ behavior are added, and how the simulated interactions compare to real interaction data as a result is investigated. In the present study, the real data consisted of transcriptions of a mother interacting with her 12- month-old child, and the data simulated was vocalizations. The first experiment shows that although the two agents generate vocalizations according to the temporal characteristics of the interlocutors in the real data, simulated interaction with no contingencies between the two agents’ behavior differs from real interaction data. In the second experiment, a contingency was introduced to the simulation: the likelihood that the adult agent initiated a vocalization if the child agent was already vocalizing. Overall, the simulated data is more similar to the real interaction data when the adult agent is less likely to start speaking while the child agent vocalizes. The results are in line with previous studies on turn-taking in parent-child interaction at comparable ages. This illustrates that computational simulations are useful tools when investigating parent-child interactions.

    En korpusstudie om multimodal synkroni i tidig ordinlärning2013Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)

    I denna studie undersöker vi synkroni i tidig multimodal interaktion mellan föräldrar och barn. Med synkroni menas här återkommande mönster eller strukturella regelbundenheter (vad gäller ord, prosodi, blickriktning, gester och handlingar) som kan reducera komplexitet i språkinlärning.

    Data består av inspelningar av fem longitudinella dyader med två barn (0;7-2;7 år) och deras föräldrar. Inspelningarna transkriberas och annoteras med grundtonsfrekvens, blickriktning, gester och hantering av objekt. Vi undersöker synkroni genom att studera samtliga omnämnanden av två valda objekt (två dockor). För varje omnämnande undersöks grundtonsfrekvens och om omnämnandet kombineras med att den vuxne/barnet tittar på, pekar mot eller rör objektet.

    Man tänker sig att barnet använder sig av grundläggande perceptuella processer för att ta fasta på mönster och regelbundenheter i interaktionen med den vuxne, både i den akustiska signalen men också i den fysiska omgivningen (Gogate & Hollich, 2010). Den vuxne är dessutom benägen att framhäva den språkliga strukturen i interaktion med barnet, t ex genom att den vuxne talar om ett objekt och samtidigt visar objektet för barnet eller låter barnet känna på objektet. Denna synkroniserade multimodala input blir en hjälp för barnet att strukturera och sortera talsignalen och göra kopplingar mellan ord och objekt. I den här studien vill vi försöka fånga den här typen av multimodal synkroni genom att studera två specifika målord och hur interaktionen ser ut just kring dessa ord. Vi tänker oss att regelbundenheter vad gäller prosodi, blickriktningar och gester kommer att vara mer synkroniserade när barnet är mindre och målorden nya, än när barnen är äldre och målorden bekanta.

    Studien är del av ett projekt där vi försöker förklara tidig språkinlärning utifrån generella sociala och kognitiva förmågor. Genom att studera tidig förälder-barn-interaktion vill vi undersöka hur språkliga konstruktioner växer fram, vilka funktioner de har och hur de korrelerar med andra stimuli i barnets omgivning.
