    Abstract [en]

    A Contribution to Narrative Epistemology

In the wake of Roman Ingarden’s Das Literarische Kunstwerk many literary theorists have claimed that fictional worlds are “incomplete”, contrary to our real world. This idea is critically examined; the conclusion of the examination is that in most cases the incompleteness thesis is based on confusion between ontology and epistemology. However, in some cases – one example is Kafka’s The Process – the thesis is better warranted, but in these cases incompleteness may just as well be described in semantic terms as vagueness.

    Abstract [en]

In his article "Who is Who in the Fictional World", Petr Kot'atko argues that fictional worlds are, in general, complete, that is the logical law of the excluded middle holds in fictional worlds, though he admits that there are exceptions-he mentions Samuel Beckett's trilogy as an example. The present article agrees with both these conclusions, and it continues Kot'atko's discussion by suggesting an explanation why so many scholars have claimed that fictional worlds in general are incomplete, and by presenting different kinds of exceptions from Kot'atko's basic position, and, finally, by sketching alternative interpretations of these examples of incomplete fictional worlds.

Now's the time - the Fiction Reader's Temporal Perspective2004In: Essays on Fiction and Perspective, Peter Lang Publishing Group, 2004Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The book is the result of a conference about the interrelated concepts of fiction and perspective in Stockholm 2001. The concepts of fiction and perspective have played a number of crucial roles in the Humanities during the last fifty years, in particular in the intersection between linguistics, the aesthetic disciplines, and philosophy. The writers in this anthology discuss some of the most debated questions in this context, such as different conceptions of point of view in narrative fiction, historical counterfactual fiction, the relationship between fact and fiction in historiography, how to understand and analyze statements about an individual's belief perspective, and how everyday discourse is anchored in perspective views of the world
