Presuppositions, again2019Ingår i: Philosophical Insights into Pragmatics / [ed] Piotr Stalmaszczyk, Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 2019Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Presupposition is surely one of the most debated notions in the linguistic and philosophical literature. Historically, there are two main theoretical approaches to presuppositions. According to the first one, the semantic view, presuppositions are semantic implications, that is, truth-conditional relations between propositions and statements. In this sense, presuppositions are considered properties of sentences and a presupposed proposition is a necessary condition for the truth of the presupposing statement. In the second approach, the pragmatic view, presuppositions are not properties of sentences but rather properties of speakers or of linguistic performances given a certain context of utterance. From this view, a presupposed proposition is a condition for the felicitous utterance of the presupposing statement in a given context.

Traditionally, it is assumed that semantic presuppositions differ from classical entailments, as presuppositions, unlike classical entailments, project under negation: if we compare a context of entailment to a context of presupposition, we should see that entailments, but not presuppositions, disappear under negation. This presentation aims to propose a revision of the semantic notion of presupposition. I argue that most standard cases of presuppositions are classical entailments. Moreover, I claim that all presuppositions that are classical entailments are also pragmatic presuppositions, while not all pragmatic presuppositions are also classical entailments. I contend that factive verbs offer a paradigmatic example of this distinction, as the factivity related to know is semantic, hence a classical entailment, whereas the factivity related to regret is merely pragmatic. This claim stands in contrast to Karttunen’s (1971) well-known analysis of factive verbs and his distinction between true factives (that is, emotive factives) and semifactives (that is, cognitive factives).

    A Cupópia do Cafundó: uma análise morfossintática2018Ingår i: Revista de Estudos da Linguagem, ISSN 0104-0588, E-ISSN 2237-2083, Vol. 26, nr 1, s. 73-101Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The present study analyzes the speech of the Afro-Brazilian rural community of Cafundó, located 150 km from São Paulo. Between 1978 and 1988, when the analyzed data were collected, the community had a population of 80 people, descendants of two former slaves, who were sisters and inherited the lands of their owner. In a book published in 1996, Carlos Vogt and Peter Fry (with the collaboration of Robert Slenes) argue that the variety denominated Cupópia presents structures of regional Portuguese, and that part of the vocabulary is of Bantu origin. The present paper focuses on morphosintactic aspects and discusses copulaomission, the use of copula instead of the possessive verb, unexpected word order in Portuguese, nouns without determinant in subject position, the use of definite articles in prepositional prepositional phrases functioning as adjectival locutions, as well as the variable agreement in the noun phrases and the agreement between the subject and the verb. The results indicate that the grammatical features of Cupopia do not fully coincide with those observed in the Portuguese spoken by the same individuals, but are shared with more restructured linguistic varieties than the ones spoken in rural areas of the interior of the State of São Paulo.

    Abstract [sv]

Cours au Collège de France 1902‑1903, Paris: PUF, 20162018Ingår i: Fabula, ISSN 0014-6242, E-ISSN 1613-0464, Vol. 19, nr 8Artikel, recension (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [fr]

Can the French Republic Be Digital? Lessons from the Last Participatory Experience on the Law-Making Process2018Ingår i: Policy Analytics, Modelling, and Informatics.: Innovative Tools for Solving Complex Social Problems / [ed] J Ramon Gil-Garcia, Theresa A. Pardo, Luis F. Luna-Reyes, Cham: Springer, 2018, s. 247-264Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A new law on the Digital Republic was voted in France at the end of 2016. It focused on the definition of digital rights, Net neutrality and the idea of a public service of data. The law was coproduced by the citizens as it was possible to amend the bill proposal on the Net. In fact, it was the first time in France that a bill was digitally amended by citizens. The chapter aims at analyzing the participatory method as a law-making option in France. The question is to understand whether or not this participatory method challenges the traditional way of governing in France. Is it the implementation of a citizen control of the law-making process or a single communicative tool?

The first part of the chapter describes the relations between the European and the national contexts of this law. The second part of the chapter explains the participatory tool, introduces the actors and analyzes the impact of the method on the law-making process. The third part of the chapter studies the emergence of an open government data in France. This digital strategy is promoted in order to win the competition of digital nations (Premat, Smarter as the new Urban Agenda: a comprehensive view of the 21st century city, 207–224, 2015). Moreover, the last part of the chapter confronts this new open data strategy with the surveillance laws voted in 2015 that control the Internet to trace suspicious behaviors.

Community Counts: The Social Reintegration of Ex-Combatants in Colombia2018Ingår i: Conflict Management and Peace Science, ISSN 0738-8942, E-ISSN 1549-9219, Vol. 35, nr 2, s. 132-153Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

What explains the social reintegration of ex-combatants from armed conflicts? Community-level programs to reintegrate ex-combatants into society are based on the theory that the participation of ex-combatants in their communities can promote reconciliation and minimize recidivism to illegal activities. We evaluate community and security-related opportunities for and constraints on social reintegration using a survey of ex-combatants from Colombia. We find that ex-combatants in more participatory communities tend to have an easier time with social reintegration and feel less of a need to organize among themselves. These findings suggest that to help ex-combatants, reintegration processes should also work to improve the social vibrancy of receptor communities.

    Abstract [en]

In this chapter, we will focus on two set of changes reported in the literature on African and Brazilian varieties of Portuguese: (i) new uses of prepositions in directional complements of motion verbs and (ii) the emergence of ter (‘to have’) as a prototypically existential verb. Some facts involved in both changes will be presented to argue that there is a single factor responsible for triggering them in African and Brazilian Portuguese varieties: the transference of grammatical properties of phrases interpreted as locative from Bantu languages to Portuguese, with effects on the syntactic behavior of constituents introduced by the preposition em (‘in, at, on’).

From Nuoro to Nobel: the impact of multiple mediatorship on Grazia Deledda's movement within the literary semi-periphery2018Ingår i: Perspectives: studies in translatology, ISSN 0907-676X, E-ISSN 1747-6623, Vol. 26, nr 4, s. 526-542Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study aims to highlight the impact of multiple mediatorship on transnational circulation by focusing on the Italian Nobel Laureate Grazia Deledda. Drawing on two previous studies, I argue that a combination of field theory and social network analysis is a fruitful way of understanding how multiple mediatorship is performed in the semi-peripheral areas of world literature. The analysis shows that Deledda's success in Sweden depended neither on the translation of her work into central languages (English, French, German) nor on the support of single influential mediators in the target culture, but rather on the efforts of three interconnected networks of cultural mediators linking Sweden and Italy. These networks are identified, described and analyzed in order to obtain a better understanding of the features that are crucial to creating successful connections in the literary semi-periphery.

How may we teach students to use Wikipedia in an efficient way?2018Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Wikipedia is often seen as an unusable tool because it only concerns secondary sources. There is also a critical trend in the university that does not want to treat Wikipedia as a possible learning platform. For new students, Wikipedia may be a way of adapting to the academic world. The purpose is to show how to use Wikipedia in language learning, partly to learn to write in another language, partly to learn how to handle sources. The presentation will show concrete examples of how to use Wikipedia as an effective learning platform to contribute to a form of open academy.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [fr]

Lectionarium Placentinum. Sanctorale: Vol. 3, Pars prima : edition of a twelfth century lectionary for the divine office2018Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The Lectionarium Placentinum is contained in four parchment manuscripts, Piacenza, Biblioteca Capitolare codices 60-63, which have been dated to the second half of the twelfth century and form part of a collection of liturgical manuscripts produced in that period. The lectionary is divided in two parts, each consisting of two manuscripts: the Temporale contained in Pia 61-60, and the Sanctorale in Pia 62- 63. The four manuscripts contain around 250 Gospel incipits and 700 texts. While the majority of the texts in the Temporale are sermons written by Ambrose of Milan, Augustine of Hippo and the popes Leo the Great and Gregory the Great, the major part of the texts in the Sanctorale are anonymous saints’ vitae and passion stories. Like the Temporale edition, the Sanctorale edition is divided in two volumes, the first including an introduction to hagiography, a description of the manuscripts and their contents, and the second an inventory, bibliography and indices. The first part of the edition covers the period from Stephen protomartyr (December 26) to Bishop Germanus (July 31) and the second part the period from Peter in Chains (August 1) to Victoria (December 23). Both parts moreover contain an appropriate commune sanctorum section. The lectionary provides information on the reception and liturgical use of texts of the patristic and early medieval church fathers in the twelfth century and presents an instrument for further studies to scholars in various fields of research. The edition might be a useful tool to liturgists investigating the contents and structure of the medieval office as well as to scholars investigating and/or analysing the Latin language, liturgical literature, biblical exegesis and commentaries, theology, hagiography, history of ideas and mentality, as well as Latin translations of Greek texts.

Les traductions de Zola en Suède : première synthèse2018Ingår i: Traduire Zola du XIXe siècle à nos jours / [ed] Bruna Donatelli & Sophie Guermès, Rom, 2018, s. 75-89Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This survey of the editions of Zola’s works in swedish indicates that Zola was very present in the literary field from the first translation in 1879 (L’Assommoir) to the 1930’ approximately, a presence fortified by the Dreyfus affair. The statistics also seem to imply a possible influence of the debate on La Terre, as this novel wasn’t translated until 1917 and its publication in France was followed by a rupture of the translations of Zola in Sweden between 1886 and 1891. During the rest of the period up to the recent days, Zola has shown a comparable presence to other French realist writers as Balzac or Flaubert. The last decades increase of editions is largely explained by the use of digital formats, whereas the traditional paper edition diminish. Thérèse Raquin stands out as the most edited work, followed by classics as Germinal and L’Assommoir. The study ends with a methodological reflection on translation studies. Following some recent studies on questions regarding the translation of Zola’s fictional work, two main approaches are distinguished: focalisation on the possible loss of meaning arising from the erroneous choices of the translator, discussion of the questions arisen by the translation in order to better understand the specificity of the original text. The latter underlines the poetics of the author to a larger degree and might thus be preferable in literary studies.

Les usages du dégagisme dans la campagne présidentielle de Jean-Luc Mélenchon2018Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

If we define populism as a grid of reading that simplifies political questions, then we would be tempted to classify the simple anti-system positioning as an expression of this simplifying impulse (Wiles, 1969). The movement "La France insoumise" was created by the left-wing leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon on 10 February 2016 around a socialist and environmental program, “L'Avenir en commun”. The objective is both to impose an ideological vision of social relations and to prepare the future electoral deadlines. In the course of the presidential election campaign, Jean-Luc Mélenchon repeatedly referred to the idea of a get lostism (dégagisme) which means that a large part of the representatives should be recalled or removed from duty as they betrayed the meaning of the mandate that people gave them. This contribution proposes to analyze the genealogy of this injunction which has been repeatedly taken up as a slogan. The chapter will be based on the critical discourse analysis that focuses on relations between social (Berger, Luckmann, 1991) reality and the conditions of emergence of the political discourse (Fairclough, 2015).

Literature and traumas: the narrative of Algerian war in Un regard blessé of Rabah Belamri and La Malédiction of Rachid Mimouni2018Ingår i: Human and Social Studies, ISSN 2286-3265, Vol. 7, nr 1, s. 65-79Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to analyze the issue of trauma and literature in the context of the Algerian war, as presented in two novels by Algerian writers who use French in a multicultural way: Un regard blessé [Shattered vision] by Rabah Belamri and La Malédiction by Rachid Mimouni [the Malediction]. It will answer the following question:is it possible to see in the francophone Literature a tendency to de-structure the text in order to make it possible for a new plurality to emerge? Literature re-members culture as it points out the dark side of the Algerian history, it makes the readers understand the current situation and the heritage of the past.

    Abstract [en]

One year ago, Emanuel Macron was elected president and promised to reform the French constitution and strengthen democracy. But as we head towards the French National Day this weekend (July 14), it’s clear Macron has not proven to be a constitutional reformer.

During his presidential campaign in 2017, Macron proposed a reform of Parliament aimed at making legislative power more efficient. At the time, the political climate was tense, largely due to citizens’ growing mistrust of government, as well as scandals surrounding conservative candidate François Fillonexternal link.

Mer skärmtid för lärarna2018Rapport (Övrig (populärvetenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [sv]

Pastoralism in Latin America: An Ensemble of Religious Governmental Technologies in Colonial Costa Rica2018Ingår i: Religions, ISSN 2077-1444, E-ISSN 2077-1444, Vol. 9, nr 7, artikel-id 203Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Based on a critical empirical application of Foucault's concept of pastoralism and a genealogical research approach, this article suggests that the Catholic regime that operated in Costa Rica during the Spanish colonial period (16th to 19th centuries), developed an ensemble of distinctive 'technologies of government'-charity, ceremonial strictness, bio-political control, geo-political rule, and administrative efficiency. Drawing on documentary and archival material, the analysis highlights both the governmental 'logics' and the governmental 'techniques' of the above technologies, as well as their complex centuries-long operation. The conclusions remark how such a complex ensemble of religious governmental technologies problematizes the synchronicistic and reductionist analyses of religion and politics; historical-institutionalist studies of colonial Catholicism in Latin America; and the compartmentalization of sovereignty, discipline, and apparatuses of security that Foucault originally proposed to account for the historical development of governmentality.

Pedagogiskt ambassadörsprojekt "Mer skärmtid för lärarna"2018Konferensbidrag (Övrig (populärvetenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [sv]

Syfte.

Self-perceived linguistic progress, target language use and personality development during study abroad2018Ingår i: Study Abroad Research in Second Language Acquisition and International Education, ISSN 2405-5522, Vol. 3, nr 1, s. 144-166Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This exploratory study investigates the development of personality dimensions related to multicultural effectiveness and its relation to amount of target language use and self-perceived progress in speaking during a sojourn abroad in seven European countries. The participants were 59 Swedish and Belgian university students. The Multicultural Personality Questionnaire – Short Form ( van der Zee, Van Oudenhoven, Ponterotto, & Fietzer, 2013 ) was administered at the beginning and the end of the semester, and data on self-reported weekly hours of target language use and self-perceived linguistic progress were gathered at Time 2. The main findings are the observed moderate or near moderate correlations between self-perceived progress in speaking and change in Cultural Empathy, and between amount of target language use and change in Cultural Empathy and Openmindedness. This points to the relevance of further studies on the role of target language use and progress in the development of personality characteristics.

Testing factivity in Italian: Experimental evidence for the hypothesis that Italian sapere is ambiguous2018Ingår i: Language sciences (Oxford), ISSN 0388-0001, E-ISSN 1873-5746Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In linguistics and in the philosophy of language it is standardly assumed that know is a factive verb, meaning that a sentence such as X knows that p, when uttered in its positive declarative form, presupposes, in fact entails, the truth of its complement. A problem for this analysis is the fact that the verb know can be used non-factively in contexts where it is evident that the proposition expressed by the subordinate clause is not true. In order to account for non-factive uses of know, two main solutions have been advanced in the literature. Hazlett (2009, 2010, 2012) proposes that know is not semantically factive and a sentence such as X knows that p does not entail, but only pragmatically implies p. On the other hand, Tsohatzidis (2012) argues that know is lexically ambiguous between a factive and a non-factive sense: when know is used in its factive sense, a sentence such as X knows that p entails p, whereas, when know occurs in its non-factive sense, it does not.

As shown in recent works by Colonna Dahlman (2015, 2016, 2017b), the phenomenon at issue―the possibility for a speaker to use know in cases where the proposition expressed by the clause embedded under ‘knows’ is not true―is not unique to English, but occurs, for instance, also in Italian. We carried out a Truth Judgment Task to test the hypothesis that the Italian lexical item ‘sa’ (‘knows’) is ambiguous. Our findings are consistent with the lexical ambiguity hypothesis, and cannot be explained by Hazlett’s pragmatic solution.

    The Andean Catch-22: ethnicity, class and resource governance in Bolivia and Ecuador2018Ingår i: Globalizations, ISSN 1474-7731, E-ISSN 1474-774X, Vol. 15, nr 5, s. 636-654Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study deals with the tensions and contradictions between resource governance, welfare policies, and the constitutionally recognized rights of nature and the indigenous peoples in Bolivia and Ecuador. We have identified a certain reductionism in current debates on these issues and propose a more systematic analytical focus on class and the class-ethnicity duality, as expressed in historical and contemporary indigenous struggles, and also confirmed via our ethnographic material. Drawing on the double bind as expressed in Joseph Heller's Catch-22 wherein the protagonists face situations in which they do not have any choice to achieve a net gain, this article centres on how national governments have to choose between the protections of rights - in this case ethnic and environmental rights - and welfare provision financed by extractive revenues. From the perspective of ecologically concerned indigenous actors, the Catch-22 is articulated in the choice or compromise between universal welfarism on the one hand, and ethno-environmental concerns on the other hand. The article draws primarily on ecosocialist arguments and on indigenous-culturalist perspectives on Good Life (Sumak Kawsay or Vivir Bien). A central finding is the existence of awareness among involved actors - oppositional movements and government authorities - that the Catch-22 quandary and joint class-ethnic concerns are unavoidable ingredients in their discourses, struggles, and understandings of Good Life.

    The basic continuity hypothesis of L1 to L2 production2018Ingår i: Second language research, ISSN 0267-6583, E-ISSN 1477-0326, Vol. 34, nr 3, s. 275-308Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

To what extent can second language (L2) speakers acquire a syntactic representation for an L2 structure absent in the first language (L1)? Findings from L2 structural priming studies are in conflict inasmuch as evidence for and against continuity between L1 and L2 sentence production has been shown. Furthermore, previous investigations have not adequately controlled for well-known animacy effects on choice of syntactic frames. I address the conflict of views in the field via three experiments of structural priming with native, Chinese, and Turkish speakers of English by means of an oral sentence-recall production task. The structure tested, the English genitive alternation, is subject to animacy effects as in the waiter’s photo / the photo of the waiter. Chinese and Turkish have no equivalent to English of genitives nor animacy effects in their genitive structure. Experiment 1 showed priming within-L1 English and found evidence of an animacy effect, albeit only numerical. Likewise, Experiment 2 showed priming within-L2 English and found the L1 Chinese were similarly susceptible to animacy effects. Experiment 3 also showed clear within-L2 English priming in Turkish speakers but the effects of animacy differed from the other groups. I argue the similarities between the native and L2 groups to constitute grounds for a basic continuity in L1 to L2 production.

The Caribbean and Postcolonial Intellectuals:  the Legacy of Frantz Fanon and Aimé Césaire in and beyond the Caribbean region2018Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Aimé Césaire (1913-2008) and Frantz Fanon (1925-1961) devoted their work to the radical criticism of colonialism. Whereas Césaire was mainly linked to the emergence of the aesthetics of négritude, Fanon analyzed everyday racism as an alienating spatial relation and considered colonization as a spatial organization – both material and mental. Torun Reite and Christophe Premat will show how the concepts of Césaire and Fanon are still used to describe material and mental borders remaining in different postcolonial contexts. They will also discuss the ways in which these concepts are rooted in the Caribbean context, but also what made them travel so well and connect with social and political movements far beyond this region.

    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on the analysis of a specific vocabulary, possibly the remains of a mining language spoken by descendants of Africans. It analyzes 149 lexical items that were registered in the 1920s in a rural region of Minas Gerais, near the city of Diamantina. Based on earlier historical and linguistic studies, as well as on dictionaries of relevant African languages, the lexical study aims to analyze 149 words and expressions in order to verify the etymologies, and determine whether they fit the demographic data available on the origins of the slave population in this area. The second aim is to analyze the distribution of the lexical items in different semantic domains and word classes and compare the observed tendencies, as well as other linguistic characteristics and social functions, with other mining languages and/or similar Afro-Brazilian and Afro-European varieties. The results indicate that Umbundu maintained a high status in the area, and that this variety was not limited to mining activities, but was probably used in everyday life as a secret code that was part of the strategies of resistance among slaves.

    Abstract [en]

The Hellenistic and early Imperial evidence of χρεία (chreia) in the sense of anecdote is summarized with the aim of completeness. The special rhetorical sense of this common Greek word is discussed, and a new explanation of the semantic derivation is offered: it is suggested that the sense of anecdote derives from the earlier sense of dealings rather than utility. The proposal that Metrocles or the Cynics invented the micro-genre of chreiai is strongly criticized. It is to the Socratics more generally we should look for its origins, if the genre must be supposed to have originated among philosophers, which is not certain.

    Tracing Fanon´s African connections2018Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Departing from a postcolonial perspective, this study adopts the notions of travelling theories (Said, 1994), to trace Fanon´s thinking as enacted in political discourses of the Senegalese Leopold Senghor´s (Roynette, 2005;  Vivaldi, 2007) and the first Mozambican president, Samora Machel. According to Said (Said, 1993), it is precisely the geographical dispersion which allows for the renewed revolutionary potential of travelling theories and we will explore this claim through what we call the tracing of Fanon´s African connections focusing on selected political discourses from the 60s and 70s, but also providing examples of traces of Fanon´s legacy in contemporary Senegal and Mozambique. We will contextualize these with examples of Fanonian practices from other social and political movements in contemporary Africa, such as South Africa,  (Gibson, 2011).

Based on analyses of a sample of political discourses, newspaper articles, memoires and secondary literature, the study discusses the Fanonian traces in these African connections and includes a discussion of acknowledged or unconscious influences, creative borrowing and the wholesale appropriation of Fanon´s thinking and relate these to his main works: Black Skin, White Masks (Fanon, 2008 , [1952]), The Wretched of the Earth (Fanon, 2004, [1961]) and Towards the African Revolution (1964). The hypothesis is that the Fanonian discourse works as a travelling memory for many African leaders since the independence.

Preliminary results attest to the continued relevance of the Fanonian dual emphasis on the individual (subjective) and the social and, as his comment to Sartre, the specificity of the Fanonian perspective on the racial relationship entrenched in a colonial setting.  As a preliminary reflection we claim that the emphasis on the individual (subjective) was disregarded in the discursive superseding of the racial relationship, particularly identified among liberation movements that adopted (the most purist) socialist/marxist ideologies. We trace what we consider the erasure and invisibilization of the everyday racism and provide examples of more recent resurgences of Fanonian discourses and practices in contemporary social and political movements. We identify a renewed interest for the dual emphasis on the individual and the social and recognition of a reproduction of the colonial alienation and segregation in globalized late modernity.

    Abstract [es]
