    Varios investigadores del campo de las ciencias sociales han señalado que la frontera de Rio Grande do Sul funciona como frente de expansión de las religiones afrobrasileñas para Uruguay y Argentina. Pi Hugarte, autor de una serie de publicaciones sobre las mencionadas religiones en el Uruguay, afirma que “la umbanda del Uruguay ya es un fenómeno cultural propio” (Pi Hugarte, 1992: 45). Eso coincide con la postura de Porzecanski (2008) que se refiere al “ritual afro-uruguayo de la Umbanda”, lo que se puede interpretar como la designación de una modalidad regional de esa religión. Según trabajos anteriores, en los rituales de dicha modalidad regional se emplea el portugués, pero no encontramos investigaciones de carácter lingüístico sobre la difusión de esa lengua como consecuencia de la expansión religiosa o sobre el uso del portugués brasileño y la convivencia de esa variedad con el español regional en el ámbito afroumbandista. Fue así que surgió la idea de realizar un trabajo de campo para observar la comunicación ritual y juntar datos lingüísticos en una comunidad montevideana que se dedica a las prácticas religiosas denominadas Batuque Quimbanda y Umbanda. Aportamos datos empíricos de un estudio de caso para describir el uso del portugués en contextos religiosos entre hablantes nativos de español. Completamos los datos recogidos consultando estudios anteriores para poder ampliar el universo observado y presentar ejemplos de comunidades que no tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar. Las preguntas discutidas son: ¿En qué situaciones comunicativas y por qué razones se utiliza el portugués en contextos religiosos y rituales en el Uruguay? ¿Cuáles son los componentes lingüísticos que se destacan y cuál es su relación con las variedades de español regional y con el lenguaje que se utiliza en comunidades de religión afro en el Brasil?

    Semantics and Pragmatics

     

    Abstract:

    Meanings in natural language use can be either systematic or incidental, but all the same it does not appear possible to identify a set of consistent and non-contradictory criteria for distinguishing two general contrasting meaning categories termed semantics and pragmatics respectively. Instead the most valid theoretical description seems to be to include any possible meanings of a language, or its use, in the qualitative notion of semantics, and, in addition, recognise the occurrence of incidental pragmatic meaning variations and additions. In other words, semantics is the wider or superordinate category, encompassing all and any language meanings, while pragmatics is a smaller, subordinate category, including only situationally induced or personally variable meaning aspects.

    Abstract [pt]

    Este trabalho é uma análise da alternância entre /l/, /r/ e/d/ na linguagem de comunidades latino-americanas de forte presença africana ouafrodescendente. Os dados examinados provêm de uma série de estudos linguísticosanteriores e fontes literárias em espanhol e em português que incluemrepresentações da fala de africanos e seus descendentes. Duas perguntasnorteiam o presente estudo: Quais são os fonemas que se “confundem” e em queposições? Até que ponto a “confusão” é frequente nas variedades em questão? Apartir destas perguntas discutem-se explicações para esta mudança baseadas emdados que apontam seja para a deriva ou evolução natural das variedadesibéricas, seja para o contato entre línguas ibéricas e africanas. A análise dosdados revela que alguns destes fonemas são trocados de forma sistemática emposições específicas unicamente em variedades de espanhol e português queevoluíram em contato com línguas africanas.

Moreover, the book draws attention to the need to articulate the fields of Linguistics and History and contributes to the discussion on the formation of varieties of Latin American Portuguese and Spanish.

The main issues are: a) what is the origin of this particle and how was it integrated into varieties of Brazilian and African Portuguese? It is argued that the particle zi  is a remnant of a Bantu noun class prefix which has lost its grammatical function

    Abstract [en]

    This paper is an empirical study of the presence of the address form su merced in the XIX century, particularly in Latin American literary texts representing the speech of Africans and their descendants, based on examples taken from Lipski (2005a, 2005b) and texts included in CORDE. Based on data found in other corpora, the discussion also includes uses of su merced in official written communication. It reviews earlier studies about su merced in Latin America and concludes that this address form appears in the context of asymmetrical social relations between groups and especially in the speech of Africans and their descendants.

    En el presente estudio se pretende investigar la posibilidad de distinguir los préstamos de los elementos de cambio de código en un discurso electrónico entre jovenes bilingües de sueco-español, a través de un modelo de frecuencia elaborado por Myers-Scotton. También la posible co-existencia de las palabras analizadas en ambas lenguas será averiguada. El material bajo estudio consiste en conversaciones entre bilingües jóvenes de sueco/español en el foro facebook. En dichas conversaciones la alternancia entre las dos lenguas es muy frecuente, con el uso de cambio de código y préstamos. La hipotesis consiste en la convicción de que sí será posible encontrar préstamos a través de la aplicación del modelo, dado que el discurso electrónico probablemente no se distinguirá tanto de un discurso oral o escrito. Además, creemos que los préstamos encontrados con alta probabilidad serán co-existentes con las palabras en la lengua original. El análisis muestra que existe una cantidad de préstamos en el discurso investigado, y además que son co-existentes en todos los casos estudiados menos uno. El estudio también da indicios de que el modelo no es completamente fiable; el límite mínimo de frecuencia debería ser aumentado.

    Abstract [en]

    A less-frequently discussed parallel-linguistic issue is the parallel language of visuals and numerals: the diagrams, tables, models, mathematical signs and different symbols that students have to deal with in their reading and writing. Texts are multimodal, that is they are constructed with visual objects and different sign systems as well as writing. For new students, it can be difficult to grasp how visuals and numerals can have different meanings in different contexts, such as academic disciplines. For teachers, the disciplinary use of the visuals and numerals is often so ingrained that they may have difficulty seeing the problems that students face. Drawing on the theoretical framework of social semiotics and the neo-Vygotskian perspective, this article shows how new students of economics in Sweden encounter a multimodal academic literacy. The article also discusses some of the difficulties relating to this situation and arguesfor a raised awareness among teachers in order to scaffold students intoacademic, visual literacies.

    In this paper, the meaning and use of the evidential particle bilee and its shortened derived form lee in Khalkha Mongolian are investigated. In indicatives, bilee is used to indicate one's own recollection. Simple past is formed together with the past inferential -j. Similarly, with a hortative mood bilee indicates the recollection of one's mental state. Both confirmation and surprise can be found as connotations, but the notion of surprise even appears to have grammaticalized into the more specific construction -na lee which either expresses surprise or is used to beg for attention. In questions, bilee can both express that one has witnessed, but cannot recall a given event, or an event that the addressee is presumed to remember. With the imperfective -dag, bilee can sometimes induce mono-occasional readings, but these are even possible with -dag alone or most commonly with -dag baijee.

    Abstract [en]

    This essay covers the translation of a fictional prose text from Russian to Swedish, the source text being the first chapter of Aleksey Tolstoy’s Chmuroe utro (Bleak Morning), the third part of his trilogy Choždenie po mukam (The Ordeal). A commentary of this translation is provided, where the linguistic abstractions encountered throughout the process are documented.

    My methodology attempts to emulate that of Eugene Nida and his principle of “Dynamic Equivalence”. This procedure is addressed in the commentary, as I explain how utilisation of Nida's theories can assist in overcoming the numerous peculiarities inherent to translation.

    I also deal with the issue regarding the first two books of the trilogy, which have already been translated into Swedish by another translator. In my work, I explain how and why I have chosen to relate to the earlier translation.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper investigates the domain of name signs (i.e., signs used as personal names) in the Swedish Sign Language (SSL) community. The data are based on responses from an online questionnaire, in which Deaf, hard of hearing, and hearing participants answered questions about the nature of their name signs. The collected questionnaire data comprise 737 name signs, distributed across five main types and 24 subtypes of name signs, following the categorization of previous work on SSL. Signs are grouped according to sociolinguistic variables such as age, gender, and identity (e.g., Deaf or hearing), as well as the relationship between name giver and named (e.g., family or friends). The results show that name signs are assigned at different ages between the groups, such that children of Deaf parents are named earlier than other groups, and that Deaf and hard of hearing individuals are normally named during their school years. It is found that the distribution of name sign types is significantly different between females and males, with females more often having signs denoting physical appearance, whereas males have signs related to personality/behavior. Furthermore, it is shown that the distribution of sign types has changed over time, with appearance signs losing ground to personality/behavior signs – most clearly for Deaf females. Finally, there is a marginally significant difference in the distribution of sign types based on whether or not the name giver was Deaf. The study is the first to investigate name signs and naming customs in the SSL community statistically – synchronically and diachronically – and one of the few to do so for any sign language.

    This paper deals with the possibility of conducting syntactic segmentation of the Swedish Sign Language Corpus (SSLC) on the basisof the visual cues from both manual and nonmanual signals. The SSLC currently features segmentation on the lexical level only, whichis why the need for a linguistically valid segmentation on e.g. the clausal level would be very useful for corpus-based studies on thegrammatical structure of Swedish Sign Language (SSL). An experiment was carried out letting seven Deaf signers of SSL each segmenttwo short texts (one narrative and one dialogue) using ELAN, based on the visual cues they perceived as boundaries. This was latercompared to the linguistic analysis done by a language expert (also a Deaf signer of SSL), who segmented the same texts into whatwas considered syntactic clausal units. Furthermore, these segmentation procedures were compared to the segmentation done for theSwedish translations also found in the SSLC. The results show that though the visual and syntactic segmentations overlap in manycases, especially when a number of cues coincide, the visual segmentation is not consistent enough to be used as a means of segmentingsyntactic units in the SSLC.

    There is no description in the Swedish grammar regarding how adjectives can be reinforced with prefixes, also known as intensifiers. Research shows that this phenomenon have recieved greater attention in other languages. The purpose of this study was to describe and map the use of prefix reinforcements, and see if any patterns or rules could be found. The quantitative research is based on statistical data collected from informal blog texts in two Swedish corpora. Adjectives on two types of mood, solid and temporary, as well as positive and negative, were investigated. The results showed that some types were more inclined to take reinforcements than others. Temporary adjectives took on more than solid ones, negative more than positive, as well as the short and frequent adjectives where more often reinforced than the longer and uncommon ones

    Inferno constitutes a turning point in Strindberg’s literary production in that scriptural quotations appear more frequently and a new style emerges. This article presents the characteristics of the scriptural quotations appearing in Inferno (1897) and Jacob Wrestles (a fragment following Légendes, written in French and in Swedish in 1898). The linguistic analysis — with includes comparative, discourse, textual and intertextual approaches — is used to define the place and role of scriptural quotations in this literary corpus. This study has revealed three different types of biblical writings which show the spiritual disposition and the religious evolution of the narrator in each text.

    Abstract [en]

    This study describes the verse design of Old English poetry in terms of modern phonological theory, developing an analysis which allows all OE verse lines to be described in terms of single metrical design.

    Old English poetry is typified by a single type of line of variable length, characterised by four metrical peaks. The variation evident in the lengths of OE metrical units has caused previous models to overgenerate acceptable verse forms or to develop complex typologies of dozens of acceptable forms. In this study, Metrical phonology and Optimality theory are used to highlight some aspects of the relationship between syntax, phonology and verse metrics in determining how sentences and phrases interact with the verse structure to create variation.

    The main part of the study is a metrical model based on the results of a corpus analysis. The corpus is centred on the OE poems Genesis and Andreas, complemented by selected shorter poems. A template of a prototypical line is described based on a verse foot which contains three vocalic moras, and which can vary between 2 and 4 vocalic moras distributed across 1 to 4 syllables. Each standard line is shown to consist of four of these verse feet, leading to a line length which can vary between 8 and 16 vocalic moras. It is shown that the limited variation within the length of the verse foot causes the greater variation in the length of lines. The rare, longer ‘hypermetric’ line is also accounted for with a modified analysis. The study disentangles the verse foot, which is an abstract metrical structure, from the prosodic word, which is a phonological object upon which the verse foot is based, and with which it is often congruent. Separate sets of constraints are elaborated for creating prosodic words in OE, and for fitting them into verse feet and lines. The metrical model developed as a result of this analysis is supported by three smaller focused studies.

    The constraints for creating prosodic words are defended with reference to compounds and derivational nouns, and are supported by a smaller study focusing on the metrical realisation of non-Germanic personal names in OE verse. Names of biblical origin are often longer than the OE prosodic word can accommodate. The supporting study on non-Germanic names demonstrates how long words with no obvious internal morphology in OE are adapted first to OE prosody and then to the verse structure. The solution for the metrical realisation of these names is shown to be patterned on derivational nouns.

    The supporting study on compound numerals describes how phrases longer than a verse are accommodated by the verse design. It is shown that compound numerals, which consist of two or more numeral words (e.g. 777 – seofonhund and seofon and hundseofontig) are habitually rearranged within the text to meet the requirements of verse length and alliteration.

    A further supporting study discusses the difference between the line length constraints controlling OE verse design and those for Old Norse and Old Saxon verse. Previous studies have often conflated these three closely related traditions into a single system. It is shown that despite their common characteristics, the verse design described in this study applies to all OE verse, but not to ON or OS.

    Anyone who has tried to learn a language with a very different sound system will understand the challenges faced by speakers of a language as different as Vietnamese who are attempting to learn to speak English in a way that is intelligible to non-speakers of Vietnamese. Many learners have very limited opportunity to hear model pronunciations other than their teacher’s, and no opportunity at all to speak in English outside the classroom. Vietnamese-accented English is characterised by a number of features which ride roughshod over English morphosyntax, resulting in speech that is extremely difficult to reconstruct for the non-Vietnamese-speaking listener. Some of these features appear to be more difficult to learn to avoid than others. Phonotactic constraints in L1 appear to be persistent even in L2, and L1 phonological rules will, apparently, often apply in L2 unless they are blocked in some way. Perception of salient (to native listeners) target pronunciations is often lacking, and learners may not be aware that their pronunciation is not intelligible. Despite years of language study, many learners are unable to produce some native speaker targets. Vietnamese learners typically exhibit a set of characteristic pronunciation features in English, and the aim of this study is to see which of these are susceptible to remediation through explicit teaching. This explicit teaching is compared with a less direct, less interactive kind of teaching, involving drawing native and native-like pronunciation of problematic features of English pronunciation to the learners’ attention. The results of this study can then be interpreted in terms of teachability and learnability, which do not always go hand in hand. If we understand what kinds of phonetic features are teachable and how learnability varies for different features, we can target those features where there is a good return for effort spent, resulting in efficient teaching.

    This essay consists of a translation from Japanese to Swedish of the short story The Magic Chalk (魔法のチョーク) by Abe Kōbō and an accompanying commentary focusing on three categories of words or expressions that might pose a problem to translators of Japanese. These categories are cultural specific concepts, onomatopoeia and western loanwords.

    Since Abe Kōbō is an award-winning, internationally acclaimed author and the norm when translating such authors is to be source text oriented, I have chosen to translate using a adequacy-oriented strategy. In other words, I have tried to keep the original author's style and stay true to the source text as much as possible without making the target text sound unnatural.

    The purpose of this paper is to try to determine to what extent and in what way four Swedish textbooks on Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) treat pragmatic aspects, as well as to evaluate the potential and relevance of the metapragmatic information and activities related to pragmatic aspects provided by the textbooks, for the development of pragmatic awareness and competence in Spanish. This study parts from the notion of pragmatic competence as a skill of knowing how to create and understand meanings in interaction effectively (Thomas, 1995), which in intercultural interaction probably requires extra-linguistic knowledge more than language skills (cf. Bravo, 2005). The hypothesis postulated at the beginning of the study was that the manuals would not fully explain why certain language is being used in certain contexts, that the pragmatic content would be scarcely varied and rather difficult to assimilate and that the exercises would not be designed primarily to develop a pragmatic competence. To some extent it can be said that the hypothesis is confirmed: the manuals could have been more comprehensive in terms of the topics covered, they could also have varied and explained those issues further. Despite the fact that there seems to be an effort to incorporate extra-linguistic information and communicative activities, the results indicate that there is a lack of emphasis on or progression on how to treat these issues. For example, there are no didactic models or suggestions in the teacher’s guide, nor is additional information provided elsewhere; usually the metapragmatic information is not combined with any activities, and the activities that aim to develop communicative skills are not combined with further metapragmatic information.

    Abstract [en]

    Confusions in vowel quality and in speaker sex for whispered and phonated versions of the long vowels of Swedish have been analysed. The recognition rate was higher than that obtained in other studies, and this is attributed to the use of real words (letter names). The recognition of vowel quality was observed to interact with that of speaker sex in the whispered versions, but not in the phonated ones. The paper also reports on F0 and the frequency positions of the first three formants, and their dynamics, as well as on the overall spectral shape of the vowels. Intrinsic pitch and the observed upward shift of the lower formants in whispering as well as the spectral level differences agree largely with those found in other languages. Similarities and discrepancies with previous descriptions of the Swedish vowels are discussed.

    El tema del presente estudio se ubica dentro de la traductología y trata en particular los fenómenos de sobretraducción (ST) y infratraducción (IT), términos que significan una adición de información (ST) y una reducción de la información original en forma de una generalización del texto fuente (IT). Estos dos fenómenos pueden surgir por falta de isomorfismo entre los idiomas implicados en el proceso de traducción, cuando la idiosincrasia divergente de dos idiomas obliga al traductor a usar diferentes estrategias para poder expresar con la mayor equivalencia posible el mensaje del TF, en el texto meta (TM). El español, al igual que los idiomas románicas en general, se caracteriza por estructuras léxicas, dicho en terminos muy generales, menos complejas que los idiomas germánicos como el sueco y esta diferencia es uno de los aspectos que complica el trabajo del traductor. Siempre, al traducir un texto a cualquier idioma, ocurre un cambio y una pérdida inevitable del significado original, en uno o varios de los niveles sintáctico, semántico y pragmático de estructura, porque no existe isomorfismo absoluto entre dos idiomas. Por lo tanto una generalización es lo esperado de cada traducción. El objetivo de este estudio bidireccional es averiguar si dichas estructuras diferentes de los dos sistemas lingüísticos afectan la tendencia a ST o IT en las respectivas traducciones y hemos llevado a cabo el análisis mediante un corpus que consiste en las 30 primeras páginas de las dos obras La casa de los espíritus de Isabel Allende (1982) y Simon och ekarna de Marianne Fredriksson (1985), y sus respectivas traducciones. El resultado muestra, de acuerdo con la hipótesis, una tendencia a una mayor cantidad de ST en la traducción del español al sueco, y, de IT en la traducción del sueco al español.

    L’une des caractéristiques de la célébrité est son « localisme » (Heinich 2012) : la notoriété des personnes célèbres s’arrête en effet souvent aux frontières du pays dans lequel elles sont connues. C’est particulièrement le cas des personnalités télévisuelles, telles que les présentateurs de programmes de divertissement ou de journaux télévisés. Ces célébrités locales sont donc la plupart du temps inconnues du lecteur étranger qui rencontrerait leurs noms dans des traductions. Il nous a donc semblé intéressant d’examiner comment ces noms de personnes célèbres sont traités par les traducteurs. Les traducteurs ajoutent-ils des notes ou des précisions dans le texte afin de faciliter l’identification du référent par le lecteur de traduction ? Nous répondrons à ces questions à partir de l’analyse d’un corpus bidirectionnel (français-suédois / suédois-français) d’ouvrages et textes variés contenant des noms célèbres (un essai, un article de presse, un roman et une bande dessinée) et leurs traductions. Nous verrons que, dans la plupart des cas, le traducteur ne fournit pas d’information supplémentaire au lecteur. Nous nous demanderons donc comment le lecteur étranger, livré à lui-même, interprète ces noms de célébrités, qui lui sont totalement inconnus.

    This book addresses the complexities of the translation process. Informed by theoretical and methodological advances in translation studies, research on writing and the expertise paradigm, it explores translation as a text reproduction task. With triangulation of data from Russian-Swedish translation – think-aloud-methodology and computer logging of the writing process - it makes a cross-sectional comparison of subjects with different amount of translation experience, highlighting crucial aspects of professional competence and expertise in translation. The book also elaborates a method for a combined product and process analysis, applying it to the study of one type of explicitation: increased cohesive explicitness of the target text. The results have implications for translation theory and pedagogy.

    This study deals with the translation of a short story written by Stephen King. Prerequisites for the selected translation principle were polysystem theory, descriptive translation studies, intended audience, and the result of a style analysis of the source text in which an abundance of imagery was clear. An analysis of the imagery in the target text found that a predominantly adequacy-oriented translation strategy was used and that Stephen King's status in the target culture can be viewed as high rather than low. Problems during the translation process were mainly associated with the translation of imagery.

    Enantiosemy is usually seen as a peculiar and infrequent case of polysemy in

    which some sense of a word is somehow the opposite of another sense of the

    same word. While arguing against this common sense-defying view fed by

    objectivist semantics, the article develops an alternative account of enantiosemy

    based on conceptual analysis of lexical units and the notion of linguistic

    meaning as conceptualization. It shows that enantiosemy, far from being

    rare or whimsical, is a vastly productive cognitive mechanism of “meaning

    creation”. This account explicitly appeals to the “speaker’s stance in the language”

    (E. Benveniste), or the speaker as a sovereign instance of meaning

    production. It can also be seen as one of the steps towards a new, conceptually

    based typology of lexical units in which their combinatorial properties and

    grammatical behavior, hence the limits of the speaker’s exploitations of lexical

    units pro domo sua, are viewed as motivated by their conceptual structure.

    The article includes a number of multilingual analytical examples while maintaining

    a contrastive perspective for those taken from languages other than

    Russian, in accord with lexicographic interests of the author.

    This paper was aimed at researching the use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) in a business context by the use of linguistic ethnography (LE). Previous research has been primarily either survey- or interview-based or strictly qualitative in its investigation. Using shadowing observations of three employees at a Swedish multinational company and subsequently interviewing the participants about their use of Business English as a lingua franca (BELF), the present study set out to investigate for what kinds of functions and how often these employees use English on an everyday basis. English was shown to be the default language of the multinational company and the findings suggest that employees’ use of language is not only determined by the nature of their work and the business setting, but also by their personal backgrounds. Their education, upbringing, and social experiences since moving to Sweden have come to shape their language use at work and in everyday life. Moreover, there could be subsequent implications for them not only in work-related functions and activities at the company but also in their integration and immersion in Swedish society. Using LE to investigate language choice and use in a corporate setting allows for a more nuanced collection of data, providing a context to linguistic research.

    English has served as a donor language of loanwords to many different languages in the world. One of these languages is Bangla. Despite the importance of the English influence on Bangla, few researchers have investigated English loanwords in Bangla and even fewer have looked at the distribution of them between different categories such as science, lifestyle, culture, and religion. The purpose of the present study was to establish whether the distribution of English loanwords varied between these categories, how these results would relate to findings in other languages, and what this would tell us about word-formation processes in relation to English loanwords in general. Articles related to these categories were found and analyzed to find English loanwords which were at the same time counted manually and compared with the overall amount of words in each article. The results showed a clear tendency for a higher number of English loanwords in texts concerned with the topic of science, followed by; lifestyle, culture; and lastly religion; the differences were statistically significant. These findings were also similar to what has been shown in other languages. Future research should aim to include a larger, more balanced sample, but also having a more reliable method of collecting and analyzing texts and words.

    Same Mother Tongue - Different Origins: Implications for Language Maintenance and Shift among Hungarian Immigrants and their Children in Sweden2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This study investigates intergenerational language transmission amongst Hungarian immigrants, using in-depth interviews and participant observation as the main methods. The analysis examines the experiences of parents and their school-aged children in 61 families living in Sweden´s two main cities, Stockholm and Göteborg.

    The sample families were separated into four groups, based on two pre-contact factors, namely (1) the parents´ linguistic environment and (2) their social identity prior to migration. Three of the four groups turned out to be comparable in size and serve as the focus groups of the study. Group 1 comprises families in which one or both parents are former majority members from monolingual parts of Hungary. Group 2 comprises families in which one or both parents are former majority members from Hungary, but in contrast, these parents grew up in bilingual areas, being exposed to other languages in their childhood settings. Group 3 comprises families in which often both parents grew up as members of a vital ethnic minority in bilingual or multilingual settings in Transylvania (Romania).

    It was hypothesised that the parents´ childhood experiences would have an effect on their ways of raising children in a migrant situation, which, in turn, will affect children´s bilingualism as well as the group´s maintenance chances. The results of the statistical analysis confirm the hypothesis and show significant differences between the focus groups in a number of factors, e.g. marriage pattern, religious engagement, cultural orientation, children’s opportunities to meet other group members, and language awareness. Most importantly, the investigation revealed broad variation in language use norms among the sample families, especially for family and group internal communication. This, together with the poor demographic conditions of the group, seriously threatens group cohesion. The prospects for Hungarian language maintenance in Sweden are therefore seen as limited.

    Språkliga konstruktioner kan ses som produkter eller processer. Artikeln utforskar samband mellan dessa aspekter och fokuserar på L1- och L2-talares bruk av svenska konstruktioner bildade med det starkt flerfunktionella syntaktiska fragmentet det är. En användningsbaserad modell för språkets utveckling läggs till grund, där särskilt också frekvensens roll uppmärksammas. Data hämtas från en korpus av konversationer med inlärare och infödda svenskar, som uppvisar en riklig användning av olika det är-konstruktioner, såväl med avseende på bredden i repertoaren som i fråga om frekvens. Inlärarna tillägnar sig successivt ett användningsmönster som i stort liknar de infödda talarnas. Vissa strukturer uppträder tidigare än andra; en karakteristisk utvecklingsprofil framträder. Sekvensen det är har en central roll i yttrandeproduktionen, där den ofta tjänar som en (ibland bara tentativ) satsinledare. Det finns indikationer på att det är tillägnas och fungerar som en formelsekvens med en stödjande roll i yttrandeplaneringen. Av speciellt intresse är de formuleringsbrott som ofta uppträder efter det är, med olika sätt att sedan fortsätta yttrandet. Dessa fall ger inblickar i det löpande formuleringsarbetet.

    Linguistic constructions can be viewed as products or processes. The paper explores connections between these aspects, focussing on L1 and L2 speakers’ use of Swedish constructions formed with the highly polyfunctional syntactic fragment det är ‘it is’. A usage-based model of language development is adopted, and the role of frequency of use is taken into account. The data for the study were extracted from a corpus of Swedish L1 and L2 conversational speech. This displays a rich use of different det är constructions, both in terms of the width of the repertoire and in terms of the frequency of use. The learners gradually acquire a pattern of usage which is largely similar to that of the native speakers, some structures occurring earlier than others; there appears a characteristic developmental profile. Det är has a prominent role in utterance production, often serving as a (sometimes only tentative) sentence introducer. There are indications that det är is acquired and functions as a formulaic sequence with a role in supporting utterance planning and execution. A particularly interesting phenomenon is the frequent occurrence of a formulation break after det är, with various ways of continuing the utterance; this provides insights into the ongoing formulation work.

    Abstract [fr]

    Le but de cette étude est de caractériser les occurrences de vraiment dans un corpus oral chez des locuteurs natifs francophones et chez des apprenants suédophones (Le corpus InterFra, voir Bartning & Schlyter 2004). Ces apprenants sont semi-guidés (apprentissage en milieu naturel et institutionnel). Chanet (2004) observe à propos des marqueurs discursifs en général, que dans le Corpus de référence du français parlé, la forme enfin a la fonction d'adverbe régi (= il a enfin terminé sa thèse) dans seulement 0,1 % [sic] des occurrences, et celle de marqueur discursif/particule dans 98 % des cas (2 % ambigu). L'auteur commente ces observations qui "laissent imaginer la gymnastique mentale que doivent effectuer les enfants passant d'une perception orale de la langue à un apprentissage de l'écrit [...]". Ces chiffres laissent aussi imaginer les difficultés rencontrées par les apprenants de notre corpus, qui font eux le chemin inverse. Ceux-ci doivent passer d'un apprentissage essentiellement de l'écrit (ou d'une norme de l'écrit) à une perception orale d'une langue étrangère. Étant donné cet écart écrit-oral, on pourrait faire l’hypothèse qu’un certain nombre de fonctionnements de vraiment comme marqueur discursif n’apparaissent que tardivement dans l’acquisition.

    Aux conditions d'apprentissage dans un milieu institutionnel s'ajoutent souvent une attitude normative envers les phénomènes propres à l'oralité, tels que les marqueurs discursifs : ils sont souvent catégorisés comme des « disfluences » (cf. Chanet 2004).

    Dans notre étude, nous partons de la complexité syntaxique et discursive de vraiment à la fois à l’écrit et à l'oral (cf. Fernandez 1994 et Bilger 2004) : « l’adverbe vraiment est très ambigu et peut modifier toutes les catégories » (Abeillé 2002, cité par Bilger 2004). Notre corpus nous permet aussi de caractériser les conditions externes de l'acquisition du marqueur discursif. Nous considérons la distribution fonctionnelle de vraiment dans les unités informationelles (partie thématique et modale / rhématique / postrhématique) ainsi que sa variation idiosyncrasique.

    Abstract [en]

    This empirical study of a learner corpus of 40 interviews, investigates the acquisition of the four adverbs aussi, peut-être, seulement and vraiment (also, mayby, only and really). Although these four adverbs are non-obligatory elements in the utterance, they seem to have two fundamental modifying functions, namely enhancement (aussi and vraiment) and mitigation (peut-être and seulement). They also appear at early stages of acquisition. The study concentrates on the positions and discourse functions of the adverbs in a developmental perspective. Each adverb is characterized with respect to these two parameters across six developmental stages (Bartning, Schlyter, 2004) and a “near-native” learner variety. We combine a functional framework for acquisition (cf. Klein, Perdue 1997; Benazzo 2000, 2005) with earlier observations from corpus studies concerning the positions and the semantics of the adverbs (Schlyter, 1977; Chanet, 2004; Bilger, 2004). We expected that the number of functions of the adverbs would increase with the stages and we focus on the very advanced levels (stages 5-6). The study is to our knowledge one of the first to cover learner production from beginners to very advanced and “near-native” speakers. One hypothesis generated by the study is that frequency patterns of the target language could be acquired earlier than positional patterns. As a result of the study, we propose an order of acquisition of the four adverbs.
