Jacob Theodor Klein's Critique of Peter Artedi's Ichthyologia (1738)2014Inngår i: Svenska Linnésällskapets årsskrift, ISSN 0375-2038, 39-84 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

An anonymous critique of Peter Artedi’s (1705‒1735) Ichthyologia sive opera omnia de piscibus, the latter edited and published posthumously by Carolus Linnaeus (1707‒ 1778) in 1738, is shown to have been written by the Prussian jurist and naturalist Jacob Theodor Klein (1685‒1759), and sent to Hans Sloane (1660−1753) in London for his approval. The critique is transcribed and translated, and its contents assessed in light of Artedi’s contribution to Linnaean systematics. While in some ways highly critical of Artedi, Klein must have been well aware that by criticizing Artedi he was, by association, criticizing Linnaeus as well. Linnaeus’s editorial contributions to the Ichthyologia as well as his on-going antagonistic relationship with Klein are also discussed.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

In the context of Children's Literature, the treatment of violence and its cruelty may challenge the norms as well as the adult reader’s “horizon of expectation”. Guillaume Guéraud is one of the few French authors for young adult’s readers who chooses to ignore such norms. This article shows how violence is portrayed in three of his novels and how it can culminate in a “non-happy ending”. The omnipresence of the red and black motifs in Guéraud’s novels grants the teen reader a higher status, and transcends the didactic function often ascribed to adolescent literature.

    Abstract [fr]

The reception of two Swedish novels for teenagers in France in the early years of 2000 raises questions on the treatment of the sensitive topic of “violence with no apparent reasons” and how it brutally goes against a doxa, specific to children's literature. Through the reception and translation of these two novels it is possible to highlight a French resistance against a Swedish phobic idyll.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to contribute to a better understanding of the role of Swedish literature for adolescents in the French literary scene in the early 2000s. The sociology of literature constitutes the main theoretical framework of this thesis.

Drawing from examples that broach the sensitive topic of "unprovoked violence" as it is treated in two Swedish novels for teenagers, Spelar död [Play Death] by Stefan Casta and När tågen går förbi (Train Wreck) by Malin Lindroth, this thesis shows how these novels are innovative in Even-Zohar’s sense of the term, as addressed in his Polysystem Theory (1990). By introducing "unprovoked violence" and violent teenagers via a realistic genre, such works filled a vacuum in the French system and injected a new dynamic into it. This dynamic makes it possible for new literary models to be introduced in the system and to change the standards of that system.

The analyses of the French and Swedish receptions of the two novels mentioned above show that they gave rise to a moral panic in France, which is not an unusual thing to happen in periods of ongoing change. This also clarifies the differences in norms between the two systems. The French system tends to reject dark topics, while the Swedish wishes to discuss them. The investigations of the translations of unprovoked violence show that adherence to Swedish norms determine the translation’s adequacy (Toury), which may be part of the reason for the stormy reception the two works received in France, and their undergoing censure. The position of translators and publishers in the literary system also plays a major role for a translated text not being censured during the transfer from one system to another.

Even if the Swedish titles translated into French are few, this thesis shows that the impact of Swedish literature on adolescents in France is certain. By introducing new and sensitive topics, such novels could be early markers of an evolution of the French field of literature for adolescents.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [es]

Justicialist Party: Peronism and Institutionalization in Argentina2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study aims at examining the level of institutionalization of the argentine party system as well as the Justicialist party. The paper presents two parallel analyses on the argentine party system and the Justicialist Party using two different perspectives on the concept of institutionalization. The first is a qualitative analysis using Mainwaring and Scully’s (1995) theory and operationalization of institutionalizations of party systems. This part analyses presidential and parliamentary electoral results in the period between 1995 and 2013. The second part of the study is a qualitative analysis of the Justicialist Party within the theoretical framework proposed by Randall and Svåsand (2002). This section analyses the origins of the party and its history throughout the 1900’s focusing on the character of the party, the relationship between the party as a whole and its leader(s) as well as the relationship between the party as a whole and its different factions.

Aprender a escribir en los niveles iniciales de ELE: Un análisis de manuales del nivel A2 para el diseño de una propuesta didáctica2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [es]

Within the research on the participation of Africans and their descendants in the formation of Brazilian Portuguese, the aim of this paper is to analyze occurrences of the prefix z/zi , as well as its variant ji , in oral and written representations of speech of Africans and their descendants in Brazil as well as in Africa. The main issues are: a) what is the origin of this particle and how was it integrated into varieties of Brazilian and African Portuguese? It is argued that the particle zi  is a remnant of a Bantu noun class prefix which has lost its grammatical function

The dialect of São João da Chapada: possible remains of a mining language in Minas Gerais, BrazilInngår i: International Journal of the Sociology of Language, ISSN 0165-2516, E-ISSN 1613-3668Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on the analysis of a specific vocabulary, possibly the remains of a mining language spoken by descendants of Africans. It analyzes 149 lexical items that were registered in the 1920s in a rural region of Minas Gerais, near the city of Diamantina. Based on earlier historical and linguistic studies, as well as on dictionaries of relevant African languages, the lexical study aims to analyze 149 words and expressions in order to verify the etymologies, and determine whether they fit the demographic data available on the origins of the slave population in this area. The second aim is to analyze the distribution of the lexical items in different semantic domains and word classes and compare the observed tendencies, as well as other linguistic characteristics and social functions, with other mining languages and/or similar Afro-Brazilian and Afro-European varieties. The results indicate that Umbundu maintained a high status in the area, and that this variety was not limited to mining activities, but was probably used in everyday life as a secret code that was part of the strategies of resistance among slaves.

Who named slaves and their children?: Names and naming practices among enslaved Africans brought to the Americas and their descendants with focus on Brazil2015Inngår i: Journal of African Cultural Studies, ISSN 1369-6815, E-ISSN 1469-9346, Vol. 27, nr 2, 159-171 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the paper is to discuss names and naming practices among Africans and their descendants in slave societies in the Americas and to present a brief overview of naming systems among these groups in colonial as well as modern Brazil. Data from previous research on names and naming practices in a number of slave societies in the Americas constitutes the point of departure for discussing who named enslaved Africans and their sons and daughters, in order to provide an overview of the different types of names that have been registered for such groups, and to comment on how these names may have been chosen and used, as well as how they reflect power relations and express resistance. The paper shows that owners were not always the name-givers of slaves and that, although African names are rare in historical records, modern naming practices may still include components of African origins and evoke memories of collective experiences.

    Abstract [en]

The present paper focuses on the speech of a rural Afro-Brazilian community called Cafundó, situated 150 km from São Paulo. In 1978, when linguistic data were collected, the community constituted approximately eighty individuals, descendants of two slave women who inherited their owners’ proprieties. According to earlier studies, when the inhabitants of Cafundó spoke in their supposed ‘African language,’ Cupópia, they used structures borrowed from Portuguese and a vocabulary of possible African origin. A lexical analysis shows that the etymologies match historical and demographical data, indicating that speakers of varieties of Kimbundu, Kikongo and Umbundu dominated in the community. Through a morphosyntactic analysis, specific features were found in the data, such as copula absence and variable agreement patterns. By showing that some of Cupópia’s specific grammatical features are not derived from the Portuguese spoken by the same speakers but are instead shared with more restructured varieties, this paper defends the hypothesis that this lexically driven in-group code is not simply a regional variety of Portuguese with a number of African-derived words.

    Abstract [en]

In 1421, the Birgittine monastery of Vadstena in Sweden wrote a letter to Syon Abbey in England with answers to questions raised by the English daughter house. A copy of the letter — preserved in MS A 20 at the National Archives of Sweden — discusses rules on silence and speech, the weekly chapter, gifts, the division of power between the abbess and the confessor general, as well as other matters. The letter also contains a discussion about St Birgitta’s Revelations. The present article contains an edition and translation of the letter, including a short introduction.

Latinet i tiden: En festskrift till Hans Aili2014Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [es]

Man eller Kvinna: En kvalitativ studie om transkvinnornas upplevelser av identitetslagen i La Paz Bolivia.2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Boundary tones in non-native speech: The transfer of pragmatic strategies from L1 Swedish into L2 Spanish2014Inngår i: Intercultural Pragmatics, ISSN 1612-295X, E-ISSN 1613-365X, Vol. 11, nr 2, 159-198 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The pragmatic functions of pitch at tone unit boundaries are studied in L2 Spanish spoken by Swedish learners, as compared to L1 Swedish and L1 Spanish. The data are recordings of a task in which the subjects - 10 learners of Spanish and 13 native controls - make a restaurant booking on the phone in Spanish, and the Swedish subjects also perform this task in their L1. The tone unit boundary rises and falls produced have been analyzed with special focus on rises and their accompanying vowel duration patterns. The turn-regulating functions of signaling turn-continuation vs. transition-relevance are contrasted with intersubjectivity-regulating signals, namely (non-) prompts for information and ( non-) prompts for interpersonal acceptance. Since open-ended yes/no-questions are signaled by rises in Spanish, though not in Swedish, and since declaratives carrying a positive politeness value tend to end in rises (the tail flick) in Swedish, though not in Spanish, various types of potential negative transfer could be predicted for Swedish learners' L2 Spanish. It is shown that L1 Spanish speakers consistently use moderate rises for turn-keeping and high rises for information-seeking, and that this pattern has no equivalence in the L2 Spanish data. Conversely, rises in L2 Spanish frequently occur where L1 Spanish speakers prefer falls. These rises, interpreted as tail flicks, also occur in L1 Swedish, but they are far more frequent in the L2 Spanish data. Thus, clear transfer patterns are found, which are further reinforced by - insecurity effects due to L2 speaking.

L2 vocabulary acquisition, knowledge and use: New perspectives on assessment and corpus analysis.2013Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This book is intended for researchers and students in the field of second language (L2) acquisition. As its title suggests, the book discusses L2 vocabulary acquisition, knowledge and use, and examines them from the perspectives of assessment and corpus analysis. The chapters also address some additional central research issues: the role of word frequency in the input, the difference between single words and multi-word units, and the distinction between vocabulary of oral and written language. The first three chapters of the book present critical reviews of different aspects of vocabulary acquisition. The other four chapters contain empirical studies that relate to the central themes of the book. The data in the studies draw on a variety of source and target languages: English, French, Italian, Swedish, Hebrew and Japanese. The book offers some new insights into the field of vocabulary and suggests avenues of research.

The L2 status factor hypothesis revisited: The role of metalinguistic knowledge, working memory, attention and noticing in third language learning2017Inngår i: L3 Syntactic Transfer: Models, New Developments and Implications / [ed] Tanja Angelovska, Angela Hahn, Amsterdam: John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2017, 85-101 s.Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter provides a nuanced view of the L2 status factor model, emphasizing explicit metalinguistic knowledge as the key factor governing transfer, together with individual differences in working memory and the operations associated with it. We argue that individual differences regarding the degree of explicit metalinguistic knowledge attained either in L1 or in L2 and differences when it comes to working memory, attention and noticing should be taken in consideration when accounting for transfer from previously acquired or learned languages in L3 learning.

Sentieri e radure: Le forme del cronotopo d'iniziazione in Alessandro Baricco2016Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the present dissertation is to study the elaborations of the initiation myth in contemporary Italian author Alessandro Baricco. The theoretical and methodological framework consists mainly of Mircea Eliade’s phenomenological theory of initiation. It is argued that the categories of space and time are interdepent in religious thought and should thus be studied as a unit, through the notion of the chronotope. The dissertation therefore proposes to introduce the concept of the chronotope of initiation as an operative tool, the intersection of the theories of Eliade and Mikhail Bakhtin, for the literary subgenre of the initiation novel.

A hermeneutical analysis of the novels Oceano mare, Emmaus and Mr Gwyn demonstrates that the initiation myth is present in all three novels. The symbolism of death and rebirth is coherently enacted as a movement via the categories cosmos-chaos-cosmos, for which the author uses the symbolism of the earth to define cosmos (regularity and structure) and water symbolism for the regenerating chaos (dissolution and renewal). The different chapters of analysis accentuate the interaction of space and time within the different phases of the initiation pattern: the profane, the threshold, the sacred, the centre (the place where the actual ritual is enacted) and the return, which are all defined as chronotopes.

The analysis shows that although the chronotope of initiation – the concept intending the fusion of the temporal event of ritual at the spatial centre – assumes different forms throughout the corpus, its function remains unmodified, with its purpose being the creation of ontological change. In its inherent structure, the chronotope of initiation unites antithetical spatial and temporal characteristics. Spatially it unites infinite and dissolving chaotic space with the constitutive envelope or sacred vertical centre, and temporally it brings together the ultimative ontological change at a fixed, historical moment with the eternal, sacred, time opened by ritual, representing the coincidentia oppositorum of the sacred. The analysis also shows that the so-called “portraits of the ineffable”, present in all three novels, reflect the same qualities. As immanent works of art, they function as thresholds into the infinite.

From a chronological perspective, the dissertation shows a modification of the initiation pattern in Baricco’s writing: from the classical form in Oceano mare, via a more realistic application in Emmaus, to the most elaborate, meta-literary adaption in Mr Gwyn. Nevertheless, the use of the pattern and its thematic coherence reveals that Baricco consciously elaborates on the pattern to suit the contemporary context.

Complexity at the phrasal level in spoken L1 and very advanced L2 French2015Inngår i: Language, Interaction and Acquisition, ISSN 1879-7865, E-ISSN 1879-7873, Vol. 6, nr 2, 181-201 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines linguistic complexity in the noun phrase in spoken L1 and L2 French. Research on linguistic complexity in L2 has often concentrated on syntactic complexity, subordination in particular. In this study, we focus on syntactic complexity at the phrasal level, i.e. in the noun phrase, following the assumption put forward by Norris and Ortega (2009: 564) that internal NP complexity provides an important measure of very advanced learners. The present study examines pre- and post-modification in the noun phrase in the oral production of very advanced non-native speakers (NNS) and native speakers (NS) elicited through an on-line retelling of a clip from Modern Times. The results confirm our main hypothesis, that there are differences between NS and NNS: NS use more complex NPs, NPs with a higher mean number of words and more NPs with multiple modifiers.

A gender perspective on girls and young women in armed conflicts and organized armed violence: some examples from Latin America2012Inngår i: Re-member: rehabilitation, reintegration and reconciliation of war-affected children / [ed] Ilse Derluyn, Cindy Mels, Stephan Parmentier, Wouter Vandenhole, Cambridge: Intersentia , 2012, 497-532 s.Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper deals with girls and young women, who are involved in armed conflicts and organized armed violence, in Latin America. It is taken from both a Sociology of Law and a gender perspective. Although there are many children involved in wars today, it is important to account for those children who are also involved in organized armed violence. In doing so, we can then understand the true nature of the problem of how armed children and young people are affected socially, economically and politically in the region as a whole. The paper will present the cases of Colombia and El Salvador as examples.

In Central and South America, since the 1960s, guerrilla groups, paramilitary groups and the armed forces, have all incorporated child soldiers into their ranks. Many groups have involved young girls as child soldiers, who come primarily from peasant and indigenous groups, either by incentive or by force. This has been especially the case in El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia and Peru. With the ending of the civil wars in most of these countries and the subsequent transition to new democracies, a number of young girls and boys, who had been child soldiers, fell into the arms of juvenile gangs and organized armed violence (pandillas). To understand what are the root causes and the consequences of their actions and how and why they decide to get involved in organized armed violence and armed conflicts, it is important to look at the environment they were born in and grew up in. This involves examining the effects of the civil wars and the problems of acute poverty; unemployment and violence in the family, as well as, state corruption and an oppressive state apparatus.

The study is based on the following sources, first, from the United Nations, UNICEF, UNIFEM, as well as the OAS and UNESCO and, second, from international and national NGOs, particularly Human Rights Watch, the Coalition to Stop the Use of Child Soldiers, Save the Children, Amnesty International as well as previous research on this area. The paper as well takes into consideration the role played by these national and international NGOs and the specific demobilization, re-integration and rehabilitation needs for boys and girls in those armed groups.

From a distinctly theoretical perspective, the paper looks at the interrelation between gender, age, class and ethnicity. A gender perspective on childhood and child law is also included in the discussions on theory.

    Abstract [es]
