    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [pt]

    Abstract [en]

The present thesis addresses the relationship between the structure and social functions of language through the study of an Afro-Brazilian Portuguese speech community. The adopted methodological, analytical, and theoretical standpoints have their origin in linguistic anthropology, social psychology of language and discourse analysis. A set of data was collected during extensive fieldwork in Salvador (Brazil), and consists of recordings of informal conversations with and between followers of Candomblé, an Afro-Brazilian religion.

Focusing on the communicative process in a specific communicative setting, the linguistic analyses illustrate the relationship between language and identity by examining theway in which expressions of African origin function as identity markers. In order to connect such Africanisms used by Candomblé followers in their everyday speech with the linguistic attitudes and ideologies found in Brazilian society throughout history, an interdisciplinary approach was called for and factors that affect the speech community’s ethnolinguistic vitality were explored. Linguistic attitudes and ideologies that have influenced group vitality were analyzed in the socio-political context (or macro-context). At the same time, the purpose was to understand communication within the sacred space of Candomblé by examining issues such as changes in linguistic forms and functions in the communicative situation (or microcontext).

Apart from revealing patterns of communication in Candomblé communities, the results of the analyses show how linguistic changes such as re-Africanization are triggered by changes of attitudes in society. These changes affect speakers’ identities and language use within speech communities.

The Language of the Slave Spirits in Brazilian Umbanda: Memories of Ancestral Dignity2019Ingår i: Shackled Sentiments: Slaves, Spirits, and Memories in the African Diaspora / [ed] Eric J. Montgomery, Lanham: Lexington Books, 2019, s. 177-194Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on the speech of slave spirits, or pretos-velhos (‘old Blacks’), that we meet in Umbanda communities in Brazil. Such spirits are understood as old African slaves who may possess initiated mediums during the state of trance in rituals. Pretos-velhos represent the memory of slavery by showing a linguistic behavior associated with their condition of enslaved Africans brought from Africa to Brazil: a particular way of speaking, as if an old speaker of African languages who had learned Portuguese as a second language. Earlier studies discuss linguistic characteristics that distinguish the speech of pretos-velhos from other varieties of Brazilian Portuguese, and compare their speech with literary representations of the speech of Africans and their descendants in Brazil, affirming that the contact between speakers of Portuguese and African languages can explain the emergence of specific linguistic features. This chapter will analyze both recordings with one preto-velho called Pai João (‘Father John’) gathered by the author during fieldwork in an Umbanda community in 2005, and written representations of the speech of pretos-velhos in books with Umbanda ritual songs. The findings indicate that, at some point in time, the linguistic features represented in the speech of pretos-velhos were characteristic of all speakers of African languages who learned Portuguese as a second language informally in Brazilian colonial settings. Moreover, the use of certain phonetic and grammatical features in the speech of pretos-velhos has contributed to the characterization of the linguistic behavior of native speakers of African languages who acquired Portuguese as a second language. Some of the features are also present in the so-called Brazilian vernacular Portuguese (and may even be explained by contact with African languages), other signal the speech of a foreigner. The oral representations can be used to complement the limited written data available to us on the speech of the slave population. Finally, we believe that in sacred spaces, where the agents or owners of discourse belong to Afro-Brazilian religious communities, specific or innovative linguistic features seem to recreate African ancestral dignity. After all, the pretos-velhos, spirits of the light, born in Africa, are always ready to help people who often come to Umbanda temples the consult them.

Who named slaves and their children? Names and naming practices among enslaved Africans brought to the Americas and their descendants with focus on Brazil2015Ingår i: Journal of African Cultural Studies, ISSN 1369-6815, E-ISSN 1469-9346, Vol. 27, nr 2, s. 159-171Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the paper is to discuss names and naming practices among Africans and their descendants in slave societies in the Americas and to present a brief overview of naming systems among these groups in colonial as well as modern Brazil. Data from previous research on names and naming practices in a number of slave societies in the Americas constitutes the point of departure for discussing who named enslaved Africans and their sons and daughters, in order to provide an overview of the different types of names that have been registered for such groups, and to comment on how these names may have been chosen and used, as well as how they reflect power relations and express resistance. The paper shows that owners were not always the name-givers of slaves and that, although African names are rare in historical records, modern naming practices may still include components of African origins and evoke memories of collective experiences.

    Abstract [en]

The present article presents and compares speech varieties associated with two elements of Afro-Brazilian traditions: pretos velhos, i.e. spirits of Black slaves in Umbanda, an Afro-Latin American religion; and Pai João, i.e. Father John, a character from a cycle of traditional stories gathered by various folklorists. While Pai João has been compared to Uncle Tom, the pretos-velhos that we meet in Umbanda communities, are understood as old African slaves that sometimes possess adepts during the state of trance. Both reveal a linguistic behaviour that is distinct from local norms: a language variety marked by a set of features associated with the speech used by Africans during slavery. The presence of the same linguistic characteristics in contemporary oral representations complements the older written sources that have been analyzed until present.

Africanismos léxicos en la historia lexicográfica de Uruguay: acepciones, usos y etimologías2021Ingår i: Revista de Lexicografía, ISSN 1134-4539, Vol. 27, s. 7-34Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article studies words of African origin with a lexicographic record in Uruguay, focusing on two chronological extremes: the first dictionary published in Uruguay in 1890, Vocabulario Rioplatense Razonado, and the most recent, Diccionario del Español del Uruguay, from 2011. It describes the journey of 14 lexical items through Uruguayan lexicography eliciting variants, derivatives, meanings, brands and information on their origin and use. It verifies if they have been collected in the Portuguese lexicography and presents possible etyma in African languages. To conclude, it highlights that most of the words appear in the most recent dictionary, that they are of Bantu origin and that they probably entered Uruguayan Spanish through Portuguese. It also notes that some of them are not far from their original meaning, while others have evolved in a distinct way in Uruguayan Spanish.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This research explores the history of the originally Iberian honorific su merced, currently used by millions of Spanish speakers in the Americas. The analysis is based on 983 occurrences extracted from a corpus of documents written in the Americas between the 16th and the 19th centuries. The paper connects discursive traditions and linguistic change and describes the syntax of su merced. It shows that su merced had two parallel drifts in two well-differentiated communicative practices: the institutional and the interpersonal settings. In the institutional use su merced has been extinguished, while the interpersonal use is linked with current uses.

Spanish and Portuguese in Contact Outside Europe: Special Issue2020Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Since the colonial expansion of the Spanish and Portuguese empires, many typologically different languages have come into contact with Spanish and Portuguese in a wide range of geographical, historical and sociocultural settings. This special issue brings together various contributions that focus on such postcolonial contact situations and their linguistic outcomes outside of Europe.1 A variety of different linguistic aspects of these language contact situations are studied empirically in this volume. These include particular case studies of contact-induced change at different language levels, including the syntax and intonation system, (i) in Spanish and Portuguese varieties spoken outside Europe (e.g. in the Americas, Africa, Asia), (ii) in indigenous languages with which these Ibero-Romance languages have come into contact, and (iii) in Spanish- and Portuguese-lexified Creoles. Apart from providing novel empirical data, this thematic volume also offers theoretical insights as several issues surrounding language contact are addressed, such as the formal constraints on borrowability and grammaticalization. The volume comprises, apart from this introduction, which offers a preliminary overview, five articles that reflect contact situations with Spanish and Portuguese in the Americas (Anthony Grant; Melanie Uth; Rodrigo Gutiérrez-Bravo), on Africa (Rita Gonçalves, Anna Jon-And, Juanito Ornelas de Avelar and Laura Álvarez López), and on Asia (Eeva Sippola and Marivic Lesho).

    Abstract [es]

Romance Languages: Multilingualism and Language Acquisition2017Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This volume contains a collection of papers that deal with Romance linguistics from two broad perspectives: multilingualism and language acquisition. Some of the contributions investigate these phenomena in the light of language contact, language attitudes and code switching in multilingual societies or multilingual families. Others focus on the acquisition of rhythmic patterns, intonation or even emotions in a second language. Many of the contributions present themes related to oral production or speech. The book in itself is multilingual and includes papers written in Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and English.

    A Cupópia do Cafundó: uma análise morfossintática2018Ingår i: Revista de Estudos da Linguagem, ISSN 0104-0588, E-ISSN 2237-2083, Vol. 26, nr 1, s. 73-101Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The present study analyzes the speech of the Afro-Brazilian rural community of Cafundó, located 150 km from São Paulo. Between 1978 and 1988, when the analyzed data were collected, the community had a population of 80 people, descendants of two former slaves, who were sisters and inherited the lands of their owner. In a book published in 1996, Carlos Vogt and Peter Fry (with the collaboration of Robert Slenes) argue that the variety denominated Cupópia presents structures of regional Portuguese, and that part of the vocabulary is of Bantu origin. The present paper focuses on morphosintactic aspects and discusses copulaomission, the use of copula instead of the possessive verb, unexpected word order in Portuguese, nouns without determinant in subject position, the use of definite articles in prepositional prepositional phrases functioning as adjectival locutions, as well as the variable agreement in the noun phrases and the agreement between the subject and the verb. The results indicate that the grammatical features of Cupopia do not fully coincide with those observed in the Portuguese spoken by the same individuals, but are shared with more restructured linguistic varieties than the ones spoken in rural areas of the interior of the State of São Paulo.

Contact, variation and change in Angolan Portuguese: the case of existential constructions in Cabinda2020Ingår i: Bulletin of Hispanic studies (Liverpool. 2002), ISSN 1475-3839, E-ISSN 1478-3398, Vol. 97, nr 1, s. 81-103Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The present paper deals with contact-induced change in existential constructions in the variety of Portuguese spoken in Cabinda, Angola. Portuguese is the official language of Angola, and the officially adopted norm is European Standard Portuguese. The focus of the analysis is on the use of the possessive verb ter ‘to have’ in existential constructions, rather than the existential haver ‘to exist’, which is the standard form in Portugal. The analysis is based on data from 40 interviews with 20 male and 20 female high school Cabinda students between 18 and 30 years of age. The aim is to investigate the role of language contact in the emergence of existential sentences with ter, as well as to verify if the use of ter in existential constructions in Cabinda has the same linguistic constraints as in Brazilian Portuguese. The paper also analyzes social factors related to multilingualism in order to discuss how social and linguistic constraints interact in shaping new varieties, such as Cabinda Portuguese. The conclusion is that the use of ter sentences as existentials in Cabinda Portuguese may be an effect resulting from the confluence of two linguistic factors: (i) changes linked with the pro-drop parameter in Portuguese emerging in Angola, and (ii) the transference of a grammatical property from Bantu languages to Portuguese, specifically, the morphological identity of possessive and existential verbs. Moreover, the only registered social influence over the presence of existential ter constructions is the level of use of Bantu languages, a finding that does not rule out that these constructions may initially have been triggered by more general acquisition effects.

‘Delante suyo’ vs. ‘delante de él’: el uso de las locuciones adverbiales locativas desde una perspectiva diacrónica y diatópica2017Ingår i: Signo et seña, ISSN 0327-8956, E-ISSN 2314-2189, nr 31, s. 85-104Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

During the 1800s until the First World War, the migration to Brazil by Swedish citizens reached several thousands. The majority of these migrants were poor laborers or peasants traveling in the hope of finding a prosperous life in the new country. The Swedish migrants migrated to the new country with minimal economic resources at their disposal and with limited opportunities to decide on their own situation. This article is concerned with the migrants’ representation of their routes in different Swedish newspapers or booklets at the time of their migration. These texts provide insights into the conditions the migrants experienced while traveling to the new country and establishing themselves there, as well as the confinements they experienced when encountering a powerful migration regime linked to the Brazilian government and the migration industry that consisted of agents that organized and administered the travel as well as ex-migrants of Swedish or other Scandinavian origin that offered different kinds of services. The article discusses how the Swedish migrants accounted for their attempts to improve their life-situation while dependent on the migration industry for their survival. However, their strategies also included networking with their friends and neighbors for both community and instrumental reasons. In this perspective, the migrants’ interest in publishing their experiences on the routes fits into their attempts to reclaim social agency and expand their social networks to include the broader Swedish society. One conclusion of the study is that the transatlantic migration of the 1800s seemingly had a resemblance to the current migration from the Global South toward the Global North; the migrants are struggling against exploitation and a powerful migration regime by investing their engagement in a larger social network.

    Dinâmicas Afro-Latinas: Língua(s) e História(s)2015Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [pt]

Directional complements, existential sentences and locatives in the Afro-Brazilian continuum of Portuguese2018Ingår i: The Portuguese Language Continuum in Africa and Brazil / [ed] Laura Álvarez López; Perpétua Gonçalves; Juanito Ornelas de Avelar, Amsterdam: John Benjamins Publishing Company, 2018Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In this chapter, we will focus on two set of changes reported in the literature on African and Brazilian varieties of Portuguese: (i) new uses of prepositions in directional complements of motion verbs and (ii) the emergence of ter (‘to have’) as a prototypically existential verb. Some facts involved in both changes will be presented to argue that there is a single factor responsible for triggering them in African and Brazilian Portuguese varieties: the transference of grammatical properties of phrases interpreted as locative from Bantu languages to Portuguese, with effects on the syntactic behavior of constituents introduced by the preposition em (‘in, at, on’).
