EUs fria arbetsmarknad:  Kan Riksbanken skrota NAIRU-begreppet?2010In: Ekonomisk debatt, ISSN 0345-2646, Vol. 38, no 6, p. 5-15Article in journal (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Beyond a Swedish horizon: Young migrants in Sweden and their transnational prospects2012In: Nordic Journal of Migration Research, E-ISSN 1799-649X, Vol. 2, no 2, p. 124-132Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the way in which young people of migrant descent in Sweden account for their future prospects and career plans. The article demonstrates how both their position as “migrants” in Sweden and their attachment to a transnational network has a significant impact on how young migrants express ideas and talk about future opportunities. The main conclusion is that from the perspective of young migrants, the transnational social network is a significant social reality to which they position themselves consciously. The network is also attributed a social capital that could extend the subjects’ horizon of action beyond the nation-state boundaries. In this sense, transnationality is a vivid dimension in the young migrants’ life prospects.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

From Exile to Post-Exile: The diasporisation of Swedish Chileans in historical contexts2009In: Social Identities, ISSN 1350-4630, E-ISSN 1363-0296, Vol. 15, no 5, p. 659-676Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The main focus of this article is how a set of practices revolve around the formation of an imagined community in dispersion – diasporisation. The study discusses the case of the Chilean diaspora in Sweden and its transformation from an exile context to a post-exile context facing a drastically altered historical situation. This transformation is analysed as a matter of agency where practices are framed differently as a response to the demand perceived in the context. The outcome of this argument speaks in favour of a diaspora concept that focuses on practices and how these are framed in order to mobilise a putative dispersed population.

Barrio Nuevo Barrio Tricolor: Popular Urban Planning in La Cruz, Bucaral, Barrio Nuevo & Bello Campo2011Other (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This video is devoted to show the way in which popular urban planning works with the program Barrio Nuevo Barrio Tricolor in the popular districs of Barrio Nuevo, Bucaral, Bello Campo and La Cruz, in the municipality of Chacao, State of Miranda, Republica Bolivariana de Venezuela. In the video the participants explain the way in which they perceive the ambitions of the housing program from a participatory and communitarian perspective. There are examples of the complementary division of labour among men and women. In the international debate it has been stressed the displacement of politics. In this particular case this displacement implies the way in which new and popular forms of decision making emerges, for example the “Salas de Batalla Socialista”. As in other instances of participation the role of women is crucial to advance the coordination of the work. Along the communicative skills women show astute ways of exploring potentials and using democratic channels to improve the quality of life of the members of the community.Aparts of the Video are discussed in the paper "El feminismo barrial en la construcción de la ciudad y la ciudadanía: Sus movilizaciones, diagnósticos y formas de participación en la planificación en Medellín, Cochabamba y Caracas", Trienal de investigación FAU 2011 - del 6 al 10 de junio de 2011, available from

    Abstract [en]

Historically cities have been the sites of the conquest of rights. But during the recent decades of forced migration and neoliberal urbanization cities have became places where human rights begin to be dismantled, mainly for poor women and more marginalized migrants. To advance their rights these people make use of forms of insurgent citizenship (Holston 1998). Although commonly led by women from the more informal and peripheral settlements (Holston 2009) these demonstrations have yet to be discussed in the relations of production and reproduction of the social economy, the city in itself and the citizenship. To better clarify these aspects this paper elaborates on three elements: first is the re-cognition of the work of women in the informal and care economy in order to show how this work is linked to the urban construction of popular neighbourhoods. Second is to infer the feminist character of the alluded insurgent citizenship by showing how women advance diagnoses on how to further build their city and their citizenship to face the combined powers of both patriarchy and neoliberal capitalism. And third is to introduce the way in which women’s leadership in building both the city and the citizenship takes place in forms of insurgent planning and communicative cohesional planning in Medellin, Cochabamba and Caracas. The paper is based on participatory observation and in-depth interviews with officials and women activists conducted between February and May 2010. The mobilization, diagnoses and participation in informal and formal planning processes attest on a suburban feminism. In this line housewives and women from popular barrios build a feminism that distinguishes them from other feminisms in ways that perhaps play a seminal role in the insurgent citizenship observed by Holston.
