    Abstract [en]

Michelangelo's Last Judgment is a site-specific work. The fresco was painted in 1535-1541 for permanent installation in the Sistine chapel and conceived as part of a multimedia spectacle, involving the singing of Costanzo Festa's Miserere (a forerunner to Allegri's better known piece) and the gradual darkening of the chapel the famous tenebrae ceremony. Several of the painting's characteristics can be explained as the result of the artist optimizing his work to function within this very context. The study is based on witness reports of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century, as well as sixteenth-century sources on the art, music and ceremonies of the Sistine chapel. Special consideration is given to the tapestries by Raphael and their relationship to Michelangelo's work.

    Abstract [en]

A new interest in the study of early modern ritual, ceremony, formations of personal and collective identities, social roles, and the production of meaning inside and outside the arts have made it possible to talk today about a performative turn in the humanities. In Performativity and Performance in Baroque Rome, scholars from different fields of research explore performative aspects of Baroque culture. With examples from the politics of diplomacy and everyday life, from theatre, music and ritual as well as from architecture, painting and sculpture the contributors demonstrate how broadly the concept of performativity has been adopted within different disciplines.

Bokkonstnären Akke Kumlien: tradition och modernitet, konstnärsidentitet och konstnärsroll1994Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this dissertation is to illuminate the relationship between the book artist Akke Kumlien (1884-1949) and various ideas about the design of books and printed letters, and to describe the evolution of Kumlien’s artistic identity and professional role. The study is based partly on primary and secondary sources and, to a greater extent, on books as objects, and in particular books published by Norstedts Förlag roughly between 1915 and 1950. A first section includes a terminological survey of concepts such as typography and the art of the book, and a description of the background to this art in those countries from which Kumlien drew important inspiration or to which his influence can be traced. A section entitled ”Akke Kumliens väg” (Akke Kumlien’s career) is arranged chronologically. Various factors are discussed which explain the artist’s choice of direction; his career at P. A. Norstedt & Söner, the printing and publishing house which he joined in 1916 as artistic adviser on typographical matters, is also described. The period 1916-1920 was decisive to Kumlien’s role in helping to build up a corporate profile, which combined the company’s earlier traditions with an interest in literary publishing that was at least partly new. The calligraphy of Kumlien’s covers and the French Cochin fount were important ingredients in this corporate profile. Around 1930 functionalism experienced a breakthrough in Sweden, and in some quarters a radical revision can be observed in perceptions of the general nature and ideal form of the book. The concept of the book as an intellectual creation is played down, and instead its function and its character as a product are emphasized. The influence of advertising on book design becomes more evident, and the discreet decorative classicism which had been Kumlien’s hallmark is called in question. Although the sharp polarization between traditionalism and functionalism gradually subsided, Kumlien as a traditionalist subsequently adopted a somewhat defensive position. The section entitled ”Teoretiska och tematiska perspektiv” (Theoretical and thematic perspectives) is primarily concerned with various ideas about tradition and about the aesthetics of the book and of printed characters, which were relevant to Kumlien and his contemporaries. This line of thought leads on to the section entitled ”Akke Kumliens verk i närmare belysning” (A closer examinution of Akke Kumlien’s work), in which books, type design, bindings and utility production are discussed in turn. Particular attention is paid to Kumlien’s designs for works of imaginative literature and to such themes as his calligraphy and his treatment of book ornament and pictorial elements. In conclusion an attempt is made to interpret the special dynamics of the interaction between Kumlien’s professional role and his identity as an artist.

Gården i den förindustriella staden: en studie i stadsbebyggelsens regionala variationer1984Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This investigation, entitled The Farm in the Pre-Industrial Town: A Study of Regional Variations in Town Buildings, is based on information from approximately 1,400 fire-insurance policies taken out by farms in 72 Swedish towns in 1828. The aim is to present an overall view of the buildings in Swedish towns as regards their structure and the materials used at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

By making a horizontal section through the time-axis at the year 1828, regional variations in buildings come to the fore. The material in the investigation is subject to the same limitations as the inventories of buildings and other documentation made in the past few decades. This material must be arranged in groups with the aid of a code or a nomenclature if it is desired to describe the general characteristics of the buildings based on information from a large number of fire-insurance policies rather than concentrate, as earlier research did, on the qualitative aspect of local history with special reference to particular monuments and buildings. The former alternative was chosen in this work, in which the frequency and distribution of various kinds of building materials and structures in different towns and regions have been compared.

Only a few farms have the farmhouse itself set back some way from the street - the so-called ’older town-farm’ as described in earlier research.

Of the 1,438 farms in which it has been possible to determine how many storeys the farmhouse had, 477 were of one storey. The remainder had two, with the exception of a small number that were three-storey buildings. Even though tiles were the most common form of roofing in the country taken as a whole, turf was equally common in dwelling-houses in Bergslagen. In Norrland, roofs of birch-bark took over this role. Finally, the information contained in these fire-insurance policies indicates that, at the time when the descriptions were made, dwelling-houses with walls of unpainted timber were as common as those in which the timber walls had a façade of plank treated with iron-oxide wash.

Relationen mellan plats och arkitektur: En fenomenologisk analys2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Who is most important - the developer or architect?2008In: Konsthistorisk Tidskrift, ISSN 0023-3609, E-ISSN 1651-2294, Vol. 77, no 02-jan, p. 84-89Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In especially older studies on architecture the role of the builder very often comes in the shadow of the architect's. It can certainly be said that it is the existing building, not what it could have become, or what negotiations, characterized of a mutual giving and taking that have preceded the finished product, that shall be the object of the analysis. A study of the long creation process, however, gives a surer ground for analyse and understanding. This is especially relevant for modern urban architecture, whose road from the first ideas to the finished building is characterized of a number of complicated negotiations, considerations and compromises between fighting wills. For the architecture scholar of today, the task of mapping this complex context is self-understood. If I self-critically look upon my own research in this field, I find that in my two large monographs on the architecture of the 19th century, I have a tendency to give the architect the main role. The first is about the self-taught architect, and professor of Greek, Carl Georg Brunius (1792-1869), a Swedish example of what in Germany was called ""Baudoktoren"" the second about the professional architect and civil-servant Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander (1816-1881). In two later publications, one more related to the history of ideas, one a survey of the building activities of a whole epoch, 1850-1890, I have, however, strived for a better balance.

Den resonanta kroppens performativitet.: En diskussion kring det terapeutiska som performativ konstnärlig strategi utifrån Lygia Clarks verk ”Structuring the Self”.2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Alfie Atkins (or Alfons Åberg as he is known in Swedish) by Gunilla Bergström is a ubiquitous picture book character. For forty years, 1972-2012, he has met his audience in twenty-four picture books. These have been reviewed extensively primarily with a focus on their literary content. The books are also part of an art historical discourse, though their visual qualities have seldom been discussed before. The aim of this study is to analyse the ways in which the visual and the non-visual elements appear in the Alfie books, and to discuss the aesthetic reception of them from a performative point of view in relation to the reception history. The picture books are part of an extensive Alfie world built on the material (object) and the immaterial (aesthetic experience) aspects of this world. As a single picture book character, Alfie Atkins acquires both aesthetic knowledge and a verbal knowledge of languages. The lingusitic content together with the non-verbalised pictures and the verbalised text provide mutal conditions for the observers response. In the Alfie books the visual oscillates between pictures and text. The pictures in the books can relate to both circumstances-chance and temporality-wordliness, as well as the more material sides of being, through the real-time aspects of the pictures. The work is performed in different places, on different occasions by different observers. The visual can therefore shift between what is concrete, realistic, abstract and imaginary without questioning the credibility of the story. Thus the haptic also determines the staging. This places these books aside of the more common picture book theories of today. Important references to compare with and depart from in the studies of the Alfie books have been other contemporary picture books, reviews of picture books and the Alfie films. The point of departure for my analyses is the term perspicuity. To set a frame for this, contemporary theories on picture-text will be referred to.

Picasso möter Duchamp: En narratologisk undersökning av performativitet, positionering och värdering i Moderna Museets katalogtexter2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Det utochinvända hemmet: En genusanalys av Rachel Whitereads konstverk House2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sökord: Offentlig konst, genusteori, genuskonstruktion, Judith Butler, Rachel Whiteread, House, subversiv performativitet, semiotisk analys.

Illusterade Drömmar: Modemagasinet Vogues porträtt av kvinnan och kvinnokroppen2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The dissertation explores the Swedish architectural competition as defined in the professional discourse of the architectural corps from the first half of the twentieth century. The purpose is to analyze what norms that defined, regulated and supported the use of the competition and the competition practice from ideological, institutional and professional point of view.

In using Pierre Bourdieu’s field theory, the competition is positioned in the interface between organizer and the architectural corps. This illuminates the competition as both object and instrument of the negotiations of a field of architecture. The competition’s position makes clear the need of a common ideological foundation and the necessity of legitimizing not only the competition instrument but also the architectural corps’ definition of how to implement it.

In departing from the concept of discourse, defined by Michel Foucault, I identify principal characteristics of the architectural competition and relate it to notions of freedom and vitality that was thought to be present in the competition. By analyzing the corps’s competition discourse the dissertation makes clear both short-term functions of the competition, such as accumulating esteem, and long lasting effects of the corps’ control of the competition activities by means of guidance, the system of sanctioned competitions and control of the architectural press. This competition system regulated the quality of the competition results and utilized the rivalry between architects by channelling it to the formal legitimate competition. The rivalry between architects, formalised in the competition situation, was thought to bring the competition spirit to the fore and was defined both as the necessary prerequisite of architectural progress and as a constituent property of the normative position of the free practitioner, which was reproduced as architects while competing entered the autonomous time space of the competition.

Appropriation av sakrala motiv: Om Damien Hirsts användning av motivet guldkalven2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Skönhet och skötsamhet: Konstnärliga utsmyckningar i svenska skolor 1870-19402004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is about the permanent artistic decoration of Swedish school buildings during the period 1870–1940. Its main aim is to examine the ideals and values which the works installed can be said to convey. It takes its starting point in the major movement for the decoration of schools in Sweden that began around 1900, and that was part of a broader recognition of the importance of public art in the country.

The thesis analyses the basic thinking behind the move to install art in schools. In Sweden, discussion on the subject was initiated by the writings and lectures of Carl G. Laurin and Ellen Key. The most important argument for the artistic decoration of schools was the general ennobling influence of art. Art represented beauty, and was thus associated with goodness and truth.

The study covers some eighty permanent schemes, or individual works, in Swedish schools, created between 1877 and 1940. They are discussed, first, in a thematic section, with a focus on the different types of subject matter represented, and second, in a number of case studies. Among the subjects dealt with in the thematic analysis are characteristic themes such as sport and outdoor recreation and scenes reflecting school activities. Many of the works portray well-behaved children and young people, who are held up as good examples.

The nine case studies analyse individual schemes in greater depth. They include examples that reflect the specific cultures and ideologies of, for instance, higher public grammar schools and girls’ schools. An important aspect of the case studies is their analysis of the reception of the schemes. The reviews examined include discussions of what types of subject were appropriate in art for children and young people.

One conclusion drawn in the thesis is that a broader aim of the artistic decoration of schools seems to have been to mould a sense of identity. The images created depict children and young people themselves, regional landscapes and regional and national history.

Taylorismen och arkitekturen: Ford Motor Company i Frihamnen och General Motors i Södra Hammarbyhamnen2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Abu Ghraib by Fernando Botero: In light of postcolonial concepts2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis explores some paintings of the Fernando Boleros’ Abu Ghraib series (2003) in light of theoretical approaches from a postcolonial perspective, more specifically in matters concerning cultural identity explained in terms of hybridity and Orientalism. Through this lens, the thesis attempts an analysis of aesthetic representations and symbolic vocabulary used by the artist. The main focus is on the motifs in Boleros' paintings, but the thesis is also a review of the original inspirational material as well as the transformation process of the subjects presented in the photographs taken by the soldiers and reinterpreted through the artist’s own vision and style.

An important aspect is the decisive role of visual aspects in the ability to produce and reproduce ideologies and define identities, it becomes indispensable to invoke relations of power in terms of domination and subordination, stereotypes and multiculturalism among the different actors: soldier, prisoners, artist and context.

De fransöske handtwerkarne vid Stockholms slott 1693–1713: Yrkesroller, organisation, arbetsprocesser2012Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The thesis deals with French sculptors and painters active around 1700 at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. They were summoned from Paris by the architect Nicodemus Tessin the younger (1654–1728). This study analyses the Frenchmen’s professional roles, how Tessin organised their work and the working methods applied in the decoration of the Gallery of Charles XI and the adjoining parade rooms. It also involves questions concerning the artist’s roles and the status of artistic professions at the early modern period.

The artisans were a group of some fifteen sculptors, painters, founders and a goldsmith. Several of them were accompanied by family members, some of whom were active in the workshop. In France these sculptors and painters had worked in the Bâtiments du Roi  and particularly at the Gobelins. Although they were not part of the artistic elite at the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture they had vital knowledge in classical pattern/design, le bon goût and drawing. The artisans were also members of the guild system and were thus permitted to accept private commissions.

My aim has been to clarify the artisans’ background in Paris and the recruitment undertaken by the diplomat Daniel Cronström (1655–1719). With regard to their activities in Sweden, it has been important to clarify their conditions in the building organisation at the Royal Palace, including social contexts such as their family situation and the possibility to practise their Catholic faith. Equally important is the professional relationship between the Frenchmen and Tessin, who was appointed Superintendent in 1697. Through detailed archival studies, the working practices and the creative process are analysed, especially the collaboration between Tessin and the painter Jacques Foucquet and the sculptors René Chauveau (1663–1722) and Jacques Foucquet (1639–1731).
