History and Chronicles in Late Medieval Iberia: Representations of Wamba in Late Medieval Narrative Histories by Aengus Ward2013Inngår i: La Corónica: a journal of medieval Spanish language and literature, ISSN 0193-3892, E-ISSN 1947-4261, Vol. 41, nr 2, s. 265-270Artikkel, omtale (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The book under scrutiny here is the culmination of an ambitious study. It has been the intention of Aengus Ward (Ph.D., 1995, Birmingham) to examine a large number of textual representations of the seventh-century Visigothic King Wamba in order to delve into the question of the existence of a chronicle genre in late medieval Iberia. Ward, a Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at the University of Birmingham, has previously published critical editions of late medieval Iberian chronicles and a number of articles on historiography, authorship, and manuscript culture. The importance of his contribution to the recent strengthening of research on medieval Iberian historiography is undeniable.

    Abstract [en]

This article explores the manner in which the virtues and vices play a part in the representation of the social order in the work of Don Juan Manuel, with a particular emphasis on the Libro del cauallero et del escudero, and in reference to the configuration of chivalry in Alfonso X’s Siete partidas (2P, Title XXI) and Ramon Llull’s Llibre de l’orde de cavalleria. I discuss how Don Juan Manuel’s representation of knighthood and chivalry differs from that of his predecessors, the moral and ethical notions inherent therein, and its relation to conceptions of social order. The discussion concerns the motivations and aims of these diverging conceptions of chivalry and how they are legitimated and justified.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter focuses on the relationship between kingship and nobility focuses on the kingdoms of Castile-Leon and Sweden during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It aims to describe research on kingship and nobility in these contexts—ones that seldom take part in the same scholarly dialogues—with a comparative analysis of the varied and shifting political circumstances of medieval European monarchies. In medieval Europe, representatives of monarchy and aristocracy vied for supremacy, often in open conflict. The aristocracy was granted legal exemption from royal taxation while the king secured high-profile military resources for his own ends. The recurrent periods of royal minority in Sweden and Castile were times when the nobility or aristocracy had the opportunity to implement their own political agendas. The chapter demonstrates that both Sweden and Castile share common traits with contemporary kingdoms in western and central Europe, and that a comparative perspective is profitable in order to make connections between seemingly disparate contexts.

    Abstract [en]

Bergqvist offers an analysis of how emotional and affective behavior are portrayed in relation to masculinity in the Libro del Cavallero Zifar, the first domestic book of chivalry composed in medieval Castile around the year 1300. This literary work embodies knightly manhood and the performative aspect of lay elite masculinity. Bergqvist finds that the male ideal of the Zifar, epitomized in its eponymous hero, is characterized by emotional restraint and composure. This ideal of moderation, shared with contemporaneous wisdom literature, grounds Castilian chivalry in morality, and creates a distance from the emotionally expressive Arthurian knights of French romances. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the incentive for promoting this ideal and the influence on the narrative of Toledo as the place of composition.

    Abstract [en]

This article offers an analysis of political language as manifested in the representation of two historical episodes in the Crónica de Castilla (c. 1300): the minorities of the Castilian kings Alfonso VIII and Enrique (Henry) I. In comparison with representations of the same events in related chronicles from the preceding period, a close examination of the discourse gives insight into the strategies deployed by the chronicler to offer an ideologically invested version of the past. Conclusions drawn from this investigation are used to discuss the battle for historiographical hegemony, in relation to the struggle for political power between the magnate class (the ricos hombres) and royal authority.

    Abstract [en]

A striking example of the paradoxical relationship between the roles of king and father can be found in the Chronicle of Alfonso X (Crónica de Alfonso X), written by Fernán Sánchez de Valladolid in the 1340s, on behalf of the ruling King Alfonso XI of Castile and León. In the midst of political turmoil and civil war raging because of a succession crisis, Alfonso is reached by false news of the death of his second son, Sancho (later IV), and is struck by grief. His counsellors, upon seeing his reaction, are mortified. In all probability this particular scene is not principally based on written evidence but a product of the chronicler’s imagination, and to understand this scene, we must consider what it was meant to convey to the intended audience of a historical discourse at court. How are we then to approach the emotions of people in the Middle Ages, when they are so far away in time, and so ephemeral? Certainly we cannot be sure to reach anything more than an assumption of what this or that person may have felt in a particular situation. Nevertheless, the attitudes held towards emotive expressions and the ways in which they were interpreted are accessible to us. The shedding of tears is a constant human gesture, while its signification and cultural relevance are not. The meanings attributed to crying men and women vary according to each historical situation, with each cultural context or emotional community (to use a phrase coined by Barbara Rosenwein). As historians we need to be sensitive to the particular context in which emotional expressions were constructed. This article examines crying, the emotions connected thereto, and the portrayal of kings as fathers and sons in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Spanish prose, in varying literary genres. The aim is to offer some reflections on the attitudes taken towards lachrymose behaviour, and to reach some insight into the distinction between the public and the private, the political and the emotional life in said context.

The Vindication of Sancho II in the Crónica de Castilla: Political Identity and Historiographical Reinvention in Medieval Castilian Chronicles2018Inngår i: The Medieval Chronicle, ISSN 1567-2336, E-ISSN 1879-5927, Vol. 11, s. 64-86Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The first part of the post-Alfonsine Crónica de Castilla (c. 1300) is partly a vindication of the reputation of Sancho II, the king who is known to have initiated the fratricidal wars after the death of Fernando I in 1065. This article demonstrates how this is a direct consequence of the political identity constructed and disseminated within this utterly Castilian chronicle, and probably a response to certain specific historical and political circumstances in the final years of the thirteenth century. The article argues the need to view changes in the historiographical genre during this period, including those that transformed history writing towards a more 'literary' mode, as relevant to the ideological views and projects of the instigators of chronicle writing. Finally, it questions current views of the Crónica de Castilla as an example of aristocratic historiography.

Arkivpedagogik - arkivvetenskap: en analys2013Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 5 poäng / 7,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this dissertation is to describe and analyse the voting restrictions of the Swedish franchise reform of 1909. These restrictions required that the voter should be a male of good repute, who had paid his national and local taxes for three years before the election year, had done his military service, had not been declared incapacitated or bankrupt nor owed society any poor relief. In practice, this meant that some 20% of the adult male population were excluded from voting.

This study explores both the ideological beliefs and political strategies behind these restrictions, and how the system worked in practice at the national and local levels. Since earlier literature has paid scant attention to the voter’s status as a citizen, this dissertation uses citizenship as one of its analytical tools.

Although often described as universal suffrage for men, the 1909 Electoral Law was thus less radical than is usually assumed. As you had to have fulfilled certain obligations as a citizen in order to vote, it is hard to say that voting was a right. A central role in formulating these new conditions was played by the Riksdag’s moderate Conservative group. The reform therefore had the potential to preserve the political influence of the Right in the age of mass democracy, not least as the question of the unrestricted franchise for men and women could be deferred. However, the 1909 Electoral Law was not only aimed at reducing the political influence of the lower classes, but the proponents of the system also wanted to educate the citizens ideologically by constructing an image of the ideal citizen as a self-supporting male, who fulfilled his obligations to society.

The National Women’s Franchise Association, whose campaign demanded suffrage for women on the same conditions as men, therefore had to relate to a political discourse dominated by (male) civic virtues and qualifications, and argue that women made a major contribution by fulfilling their special obligations to society. Also, the tax payment and poor relief voting restrictions in the 1909 franchise reform had an impact on the way proposals for women’s right to vote were formulated.

The Social Democrats, whose electorate was heavily affected by the taxpaying qualification, in their programme for a constitutional reform demanded that this particular restriction should be abolished. To limit the number of party voters excluded from the polls, Social Democratic newspapers and election offices tried to mobilise disenfranchised workers to appeal the electoral register and get back on it. Those activities, which have been largely neglected in earlier research on the history of the Swedish Social Democratic Party, came to constitute an important element in the party’s election campaigns during the 1910s.

In Sweden, the poor relief voting restriction (the pauper exclusion) was applied in a much more general way than in other countries, disqualifying recipients of very small or provisional amounts that had not been repaid as well as family providers who had received poor relief because of family members. The rules also proved very difficult to put into practice. The Social Democrats and many Liberals, but also leading members of the Swedish Poor Relief Association wanted to reform the law so that only those permanently supported by poor relief should lose their right to vote.

Unlike the Social Democrats, the Liberals supported the taxpaying qualification as a necessary token of orderliness. However, they wanted the conscientious poor taxpayers to be distinguished from those who were neglectful and dilatory. As the Liberal-Social Democratic coalition government, which came to power in 1917, found out, this proved impossible. Instead, the taxpaying qualification was abolished in connection with the 1918-1921 constitutional reform, which also gave women the vote and limited the poor relief voting restriction to those permanently receiving support.

In sum, the 1909 franchise reform did not constitute a sharp divide between the old system of income and property qualifications and twentieth century democracy. There was a clear continuity with the former system, in which you earned the right to vote by fulfilling your obligations. The 1909 reform did not lead to universal suffrage for men. Instead, it should be regarded as an intermediate stage in the development towards universal suffrage. Property and income qualifications for voters were abolished, but new qualifications and new mechanisms for exclusion were introduced instead. In this respect, Sweden was not unique. Before adopting universal suffrage, many countries combined universal suffrage with various voting restrictions. In Sweden, however, the right to vote came with an unusually large number of conditions.

    Abstract [en]

For centuries the Swedish landscape has been assessed on account of its natural and cultural heritage. The 20th century however, marks an especially dynamic period of preservation and conservation acts, due to the extensive transformation of natural habitats, cultural scenery, space and society in the wake of modernity. Over the course of this period the motifs and values embodied in the landscape's natural and cultural heritage undergo significant changes, as the landscape perception of aniquarians and environmental preservationists shifts. This thesis is concerned with how the Swedish landscape has been viewed and taken in use by these subjects to materialize ideas of nature, culture and heritage over the course of the 20th century. Its inquiry is geographical and historical. By studying the transformation of the spatial setting, and the agenda of agencies of natural and cultural heritage, these perspectives merge to create a synthesis, bringing new insights to the relations between natural and cultural heritage, antiquarians, conservationists and the landscape and last – but not least – the historically constructed spatial realms of nature and culture in the Swedish landscape.

    Abstract [en]

From the dissolution of Sweden’s Union with Norway in 1905 until the country’s membership in the European Union in 1995, diplomats in Sweden underwent a number of reforms that aimed to create a professionally recruited and capable cadre of civil servants, serving Swedish diplomacy. The purpose of the dissertation is to analyze the shaping of Swedish diplomats in the twentieth century.

Empirically the analysis focuses on how the Swedish state envisioned diplomats to be, how applicants in practice were recruited and trained by the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and how the diplomats themselves presented their positions. By studying government commission reports, statutes issued on the admission of diplomats, material relating to their recruitment and training archived by the MFA, and diplomatic memoirs, this study analyzes the ways in which this group was in constant conversation with the changing world around them. Theoretically, the dissertation takes its point of departure in Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the state, adopting the concepts of capital, consecration, the bureaucratic field, habitus and doxa in an analytical approach.

The study contributes to four research gaps. First, it sheds new light on how a career in diplomacy was reshaped considering domestic and international developments in the twentieth century. Second, it demonstrates how visions expressed and routines adopted benefitted men from the upper ranks of society, and it also shows how these structural conditions changed over time. Third, the study explores how the competences and skills of diplomats mainly relied on generalist skills that related to both diplomacy and bureaucracy. Fourth, the dissertation demonstrates how publishing memoirs became an increasingly valuable means for the diplomats to present themselves, individually and collectively, and to display their lives and careers to a wider readership.

Monastic culture : the long thirteenth century : essays in honour of Brian Patrick McGuire2014Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Monasteries were important cultural centers in the Middle Ages. In monasteries, classical authors were copied and studied, new music and new sermons were composed, and new standards from abroad were introduced and spread throughout an ever larger Europe. Monks and nuns created European networks, connecting them to individuals with whom they shared particular interests in theology and learning, but they also had a keen eye for the importance of cultivating connections to local magnates and kings. In the long 13th century, new orders like the mendicants emerged, and monastic life as a whole flourished. Sustained experimentation, the adaptation of new intellectual inspirations, and the adjustment of organizational structures were major characteristics of this life. There was a balance between contemplating the transcendent and securing the material foundation that allowed the individual monk or nun to disappear into the Divine. Monastic communities were powerful centers for innovation that decisively influenced secular life and shaped European history. The contributions in this festschrift are offered in honor of Professor Brian Patrick McGuire, a recognized authority on the Cistercians, and in acknowledgment of his significant contribution to the study of European monastic culture.

Controversy over the concept ‘freedom’ during the Iranian constitutional revolution (1906– 09)2019Inngår i: British Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, ISSN 1353-0194, E-ISSN 1469-3542, Vol. 46, nr 1, s. 1-13Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Iranian constitutional revolution of 1906–09 paved the way for the establishment of new administrative institutions, adopting modern ideas and the hegemony of new political discourse over the archaic political reasoning. One of the most important aspects of the new discourse was the definition and internalization of modern concepts. This paper holds the view that the concept ‘freedom’ brought about a complicated problem for the socio-political sphere in the course of the Iranian revolution and, as such, deserves a thorough examination. Previous studies on the subject have usually neglected this aspect. Yet, this was exactly the main domain of the clash between traditionalism and modernity during the revolutionary years and brought about far-reaching results for Iranian society. This article attempts to contribute to this field by examining a number of Iranian journals of the period in order to evaluate their understanding of the concept ‘freedom’ and show the discrepancy between the constitutionalist and non-constitutionalist discourses.

    Abstract [en]

The spiritual widower and the wordly widow.

Civil status was not something that bothered late medieval Swedish people. Of course marriage was crucial both for women and for men but in different ways. Women attained their majority when they married. Men, when they married, not only ruled their own lives but governed their wives´lives, as well as the life of the whole household.

The author furthers previous studies on women´s liberty of action and independence. Earlier studies advocate the view-point that it was widowhood itself that made it possible for women to take part in public life. The author asserts that this was not always the case and that a woman gained the possibility to participate when she got married, provided she had private means to dispose of and that her husband let her act independently. The author points out that the concept "widow" during the late Middle Ages only was used when the woman had children under age. The concept widow meant "fatherless child", that is to say from having their father as the normal guardian they now had their mother. Widowhood gave a woman the right to administer her children´s means. When the widow administered her own means during widowhood the charters did not use the concept widow. In this essay this is demonstrated by tracing the real life of two noble women and their heirs, covering the period 1400 - 1501.

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this article is to scrutinize the opportunities married women had to administer their inheritance and reversions compared to widows' opportunities to administer their inheritance, dower and share from the former marriage. It has been claimed that medieval women had to wait until they were widowed to take charge over their own property. In this article I challenge this view. I argue that a noble woman's opportunities to act independently depended on the origins of the property she wanted to sell, and if male representatives from that family laid claim to the land or not.

I investigate all written transactions carried out by freeholders and transactions carried out by noble families in two different regions in present-day Sweden during the period from 1300 to 1500. I establish in what type of transactions the women stood as sole executors in the charters, and if they were named as wives or as widows. I also investigate if they participated in varied forms of transactions when widowed compared to when they were in marriage.

The principal result is that the wife of a freeholder did not execute deeds herself. This was done by her husband or, when she was young, by her brother. It was extremely rare that a woman of this status administered her inheritance herself, due to the stronger pre-emptive rights for men besides the brother in Jämtland. As wealthy widows, however, women in this position sometimes executed deeds, presumably because their brothers were dead. Noble women administered their property more frequently. Their pre-emptive rights were stronger and they therefore had more property to dispose of. In the absence of men from the noble family from where the land originated, noble women could act independently, irrespective of if they were widows or wives.

Att förhandla sitt medborgarskap: Kvinnor som kollektiva politiska aktörer i Örebro 1900-19501999Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation takes its theoretical departure in the concept of citizenship, conceptualised here both as a status, carrying a wide range of rights, and as a practice, involving both obligations and political participation. The investigation focuses on women in local political parties, trade unions, women's organizations for temperance, philanthropy and the franchise, and women's networks in Örebro. It is possible to understand and explain women's collective actions in their own organizations as a struggle and negotiation about the status and meaning of their political citizenship.

The survey reveals that women´s political representation did not correspond to their activities and responsibilities as citizens. They received the same formal status of citizenship, but not the same opportunities as men. The huge obstacle was the nomination process in the political parties. It was mostly through the demands of the women's own associations, that women were represented at all. On the other hand, separate organization was an obstacle for women to represent anything other than their female sex. Women tried to make sense of a gendered citizenship, full of contradictions and paradoxes. They displayed a large and multifaceted practice of citizenship. They tried to command respect for their contribution to publice welfare. They spent a lot of time on voluntary work for the common good. They educated themselves and other women to be good citizens. This can be interpreted as an adaption to the male definition of citizenship. But women also tried to negotiate with men about the meaning of female citizenship. They suggested that what women did for the common good should be upgraded. They tried alternative ways to achieve economic independence and economic citizenship. This can be interpreted as resistance to the male definition of citizenship

Gitarrkulturer: förändringar i gitarrens sociala och musikaliska status och dess utveckling som kulturell symbol i Sverige 1820-19802017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 5 poäng / 7,5 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, Guitar Cultures, I aim to examine changes in the social, musical and cultural status of the guitar in Sweden during the period of 1820–1980. I also will outline the instrument’s development as a cultural symbol during this time. The main reason for my choice of subject is my distinct impression that the guitar probably is the most widely spread and played of all musical instruments, not only in Sweden, but worldwide.  Another reason is that I am a guitar player myself since many years. The popularity of the guitar has causes that are musical as well as extra-musical. From its humble beginnings – probably in Spain – in the 16th century, the guitar has become a fixture in a number of societies, not only in the Western hemisphere, since from way back it was brought by European seafarers to the rest of the world. The fact that the instrument lent itself very well to electrical amplification made it an important voice in popular music from the 1940’s and onwards, while its international status as a concert instrument is well established these days, after a somewhat shaky beginning pre-Segovia. In Sweden, the guitar has inhabited a number of different social and symbolic spheres. From being a fairly exclusive pastime for the upper class it became very popular among a broader segment of society during the 19th century, until it fell out of favour with the wealthier strata of society, who saw the piano as more befitting their social position. In the early 20th century, the guitar instead became firmly associated with the Swedish branch of the Salvation Army, where it was adopted as the main instrument in the service of God – almost exclusively played by female soldiers, which meant that the guitar for a long time was percieved solely as an instrument for women. This did not change until the 50’s, when the advent of rock’n’ roll suddenly made the guitar attractive for young men who saw Elvis Presley and Tommy Steele as role models. In this paper, I attempt to study a number of different guitar cultures in order to reveal which factors that have been the most influential regarding the changes in the guitar’s social, musical and cultural status as well as in its development as a cultural symbol.
