    Abstract [en]

This paper contributes to the literature on the political role and responsibilities of corporations. Following Deetz’s (1995) critical reading of stakeholder management and a critical methodology, the paper analyses how a large Swedish corporation manages conflicting stakeholder interests and rationales in a multi-stakeholder context. Throughout the case analysis, it is suggested that the corporation reinforces what Deetz (1995) refers to as an information mode, thus effectively hindering it from reaching a communication mode in which more genuine stakeholder dialogues are performed.

    Abstract [en]

The research circle approach (RCA) is an example of collaborative research based on two explicit values: the belief in the power of knowledge and the need for democracy in the workplace. The RCA builds on a tradition of vocational education and has its roots in the modernization of Sweden. Four examples of quite different change efforts are used to present how research circle work is conducted and the kind of practical as well as scientific knowledge that is developed from working with this approach.

Generation Z tar plats: Vad driver deras inre motivation i arbetslivet och hur kan ledare främja den?2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Improved standard of living has been followed by demographic changes and increased retirement age. Hence today’s organizations manage a diverse workforce of four generations, each of them with its own distinct attributes. Likewise, tomorrows organizations will consist of a generational diversity of five to six generations. Most research on generations has focused on characteristics and attitude differences. Drawing on the crucial and continual work of motivation - a journey without an end - this qualitative research study examined the most recent generation currently entering the labor force, Generation Z, and their workplace motivation. More specifically, the study explored if, and how, the generation is influenced by intrinsic motivation and its three basic needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness with regards to Self-Determination Theory and transformational leadership. Leaders role in promoting autonomy, competence and relatedness were analyzed at. The findings are based on semi-structured interviews with seven employees from Generation Z and three leaders. Our results showed that Generation Z is clearly impacted by and requesting intrinsic motivation in work life. In particular, the need for competence and a higher level of disloyalty towards the employer were portrayed. Furthermore, the strong demand for feedback among the generation was disclosed, suggesting more time-consuming measures from leaders.

    Abstract [en]

We are now witnessing the first generation born into liquid modernity – the millennials – for whom being primarily called on by society as consumers and experiencing the deepened significance and logic of life as a lottery (Bauman and Mauro, 2016) is natural (yet uncomfortable). The main point made is that the first ‘solid’ (sic!) generation of liquid consumers that Bauman wrote so vividly about is set to embark on adult life and enter organizations en masse as managers and workers. It is argued that the entry of the millennials further intensifies the ongoing subsidiarization process that is already taking place in organizations and means that the individualization of collective organizational problems will be even more concealed and difficult to detect. In relation to the millennials entering organizations, it is further argued that it is essential that Critical Management Studies (CMS) takes heed of the challenges that the entry of the millennials carry with them. A Baumanian framework informs us that this can only be done by avoiding nostalgia – going back-to-the-future.

    Abstract [en]

The literature on dirty work has traditionally zoomed in on workplace studies of occupational groups stigmatized by some parts of society. In this paper the bias is challenged and extended with the aid of Iris Marion Young’s appropriation of Jean-Paul Sartre’s concept of seriality and an empirical study of workers with non-stigmatized occupations in stigmatized work contexts (arms and pornography). The study shows that the workers have to be constantly ready to deal with work-related dirt in their identity work and to do this without any means of support, development of a language or resistance to the transfer of dirt.

    Abstract [en]

This article seeks to defend and develop a stakeholder pragmatism advanced in some of the work by Edward Freeman and colleagues. By positioning stakeholder pragmatism more in line with the democratic and ethical base in American pragmatism (as developed by William James, John Dewey and Richard Rorty), the article sets forth a fallibilistic stakeholder pragmatism that seeks to be more useful to companies by expanding the ways in which value is and can be created in a contingent world. A dialogue between a defence company and peace and arbitration society is used to illustrate the main plot of this article

Normal deviants and Erving Goffman: Extending the literature on organizational stigma2015Inngår i: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies, ISSN 2245-0157, E-ISSN 2245-0157, Vol. 5, nr 4, s. 125-142Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The paper highlights two problematic tendencies in the burgeoning literature on organizational stigma. The first tendency is conceptual, where stigma is treated at the organizational level, thereby neglecting social encounters at the micro-level. As a way of remedying this, we enroll the seminal writings of Erving Goffman to situate organizational stigma in the interaction order. The second tendency is empirical, where the inclusion of actors performing stigma management is limited to managerial and organizational actors, thus neglecting many of those faced with managing organizational stigma. We report from an explorative study of ordinary wage laborers in the Swedish arms and pornography industries situated toward the bottom of their organizations and referred to as ‘normal deviants’. The paper shows how and why the organizational stigma literature could be more sensitive and inclusive toward whom, how, when, and where organizational stigma is managed.

One Code to Rule Them All: Management Control and Individual Responsibility in Contexts2015Inngår i: Business and Professional Ethics Journal, ISSN 0277-2027, E-ISSN 2153-7828, Vol. 34, nr 2, s. 259-290Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is about how multiple contexts influence employees’ and managers’ enactments of a standardized corporate code of ethics. An earlier local Swedish case study of how a code is enacted is extended to include enactments during business trips to Ottawa (Canada), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and New Delhi (India). The paper shows that although the code is possible to enact as remote and insignificant (‘not relevant to me’) in the local study, when travelling to different contexts it is enacted as intrusive (affecting core operations) and fluid (highlighting seeming contradictions). The paper highlights the consequences of these enactments in terms of management control and individual responsibility) and suggests ways for better understanding how a code is expected to perform, meant to work and keep on working.

Exploring the Notion of Information:  A Proposal for a Multifaced Understanding2011Inngår i: Journal of TripleC, Vol. 9, nr 2, s. 305-315+Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The notion of Information is one of the most essential that guides situations to flow in certain ways. Situations such as those of natural disasters, "the Haiti earthquake 2010"; the financial crisis, that of "Greece Crisis 2010"; or the environmental disasters, such as that of "oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico 2010", are just a few instances of constant growing empirical dilemmas in our global society, where information plays a central role. The meaning of what information is has clear implications on how we deal with it in our practical lives, which in turn may give rise to situations that we would prefer to be without. This way, the notion of information has evidently presented the need to question what it really means and how does it dominate the functioning of our global society. Thus, two questions emerge in this paper: what definitions of the notion of information are presented in the literature?; and, what are the differences between these definitions? To answer these questions, we have conducted a comprehensive literature survey of more than two hundred gathered publications. Detailed analyses of the content of these publications identified four forms of information notion definitions. The results show that these four forms present diverse and opposing views of the notion of information, labelled as the "quartet approach". These addressed different foci, contexts and challenges. In addition, we present an alternative, yet a novel understanding of the notion of information, associated with how information functions in our societies. This understanding is presented with a new perspective, intended to address significant needs of the information society.

    Abstract [en]

In this paper, we develop a conceptual model for understanding human‑related information practices and their behavioural activities. Our focus is on forging new possibilities to explore and improve the contemporary dilemma when human activities fail due to the lack of the needed information, which is here understood as information inadequacy. More precisely, information inadequacy is defined as vulnerable and inadequate information, composed by the dichotomy of information lack and/or of information overflow, which imposes complexities and unexpected behaviour on human, social and industrial affairs. By exploring the lack of needed information in human, social and industrial affairs, we conducted an inquiry into different empirical situations manifesting information inadequacy, subsequently examining the various theoretical bodies that relate to information inadequacy. The key question was: Which theories may explicate the key human behavioural patterns that cause information inadequacy? To answer this question, our paper presents initial guidance with a systematic approach that focuses on evaluating and further improving research and practice in terms of information relevance. The empirical cases are largely based on major human, social and industrial dysfunctions: the Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy 2008, and the Enron bankruptcy 2001, the disasters of the Columbia space shuttle in 2003, and the Challenger in 1986. The analyses are examined through theories of information behaviour that influence communication processes where two or more different actors are required to engage in activities of communicating information. The results include the identification of four information exchange patterns: influenced, intentional, hindered, and unaware. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of the model for practice with information. The paper concludes by reviewing the role of information inadequacy in economic, social and political contexts that remain challenging.

Leadership in the digital age: A study on the effects of digitalisation on top management leadership2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Digitalisation and the phenomenon of digital transformation is rapidly and fundamentally changing existing businesses and organisations alike (Collin, 2015). Although considered a prime challenge for leaders of complex and changing organisations, research in the combined field of digitalisation and leadership however still remain scarce. As executives are tasked with the leading of digital transformation, this study aims to understand how digitalisation effects top management leadership. To achieve this, the study takes a two-folded approach by (1) outlining six characteristics of digitalisation and (2) analysing how these characteristics effect three contemporary forms of leadership: values-based, transformative and authentic leadership. Through a broad literature survey and 13 in-depth interviews with executives and organisational leaders, the study found that the six identified characteristics of digitalisation all effected the three forms of contemporary leadership. The different characteristics did not only change how the leaders practiced each of their leadership styles, but also how their leadership manifested itself through the use of various digital tools, methods and processes in order to enhance and empower their leadership. Even the sub-features of each leadership form were subject to this fundamental digital change. What was also found were three complementary perspectives when leading complex and changing organisations: the perspective of holism, virtuality and networked-based hubs. Each of these perspectives were premiered aspects to be considered as a contemporary leader.

Enabling co-creation of e-services through virtual worlds2011Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The recent penetration of the internet has provided a fertile ground for the rapid rise of e-services, and as a result, the e-services market is by its nature global and highly competitive. One of the keys to success is to anticipate and fulfil user needs through the constant development of new offerings. However, innovation is complex and characterized by a high failure rate - especially when customers have a diverse set of needs due to their being spread across the globe. Both theory and practice therefore recommend collaborating with users during the innovation process to overcome this challenge. Of interest is that recent developments within virtual worlds or the immersive internet offer unprecedented opportunities for firms to tap into the innovative potential of consumers and consumer communities for new service creation. Inspired by these opportunities and drawing upon theories of co-creation, our aim is to shed light on the opportunities and challenges that virtual worlds offer to support co-creation processes for e-services innovation. Using a design research approach, we developed a user-driven service innovation workshop within the virtual world of Second Life. We collaborated with the e-tourism start up called Travel for change, which develops an international web community for volunteer travellers who aim make a positive impact on underprivileged communities around the world. We discuss the setup of the research setting to highlight the opportunities presented by virtual worlds for organizations aiming to develop new services with customers during virtual co-creation workshops.

    Abstract [en]

This book chapter highlights the contradicting identities and value systems that Indians follow and the rationale behind the same. It discusses the concept of Ardhanarishvara in India, and yin and yang in China and how they help others appreciate the paradoxes of the East. The history of India is marked by continual contact with countless cultures of the world. The chapter shows how the Ardhanarishvara perspective provides a better understanding of the cultural considerations crucial to fostering business relations in India. It explores the paradoxical value systems that govern the Indian mindset and their impact on business behaviour. While the evidence of human settlement in the Indian subcontinent stretches far back in the history of human civilization, the settlements that took the form of urban civilization were arguably around the fertile land along the three rivers: Indus, Ghaggar-Hakra, and the extinct Saraswati.

Mer än bara en korv med bröd: - En kartläggning och analys av affärsutvecklingeninom svensk elitfotboll2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Career Dis-Integration and Re-Integration in Mergers and Acquisitions: Managing Competence and Motivational Intangibles2001Inngår i: European Management Journal, ISSN 0263-2373, E-ISSN 1873-5681, Vol. 19, nr 6, s. 609-618Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) are increasingly prevalent, powerful and risky corporate events. The resistance or support of people in the integration of two previously separate organizations plays a key role for their success or failure. In this paper we present a Career Concept approach to better understand and manage sources and incentives for individual contributions and reactions to M&A. As ‘merged’ corporations integrate previously separate organizations, they can often dis-integrate individual careers with lay-offs, reduced advancement opportunities, upset or changed career plans, and other resistance-generating changes. This is the poorest means of mobilizing motivation, experience, commitment and competence, all of which are usually seen as critical justifications for M&A in the first place. Organizations face opportunity to select new combinations and integrate work in ways that individual careers can be re-integrated into the goals of the M&A with the goals and motivations of participants affected by it, by recognizing and effectively supporting different motivational and competence profiles.

Community Development and Small-Scale Food Production: Multifaceted Demands on Rural Entrepreneurs2016Inngår i: Challenges for the new rurality in a changing world: Proceedings from the 7th International Conference on Localized Agri-Food Systems / [ed] Paulina Rytkönen, Ursula Hård, Huddinge: Södertörns högskola, 2016, s. 21-22Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we investigate how small- scale food producers handle the tension between small-scale craftsmanship production and the traditional business growth logic. We use qualitative case method and investigate two farms. Our result shows that growth occurs more in forms of collaborations rather than within an organization.

Using food culture and heritage in a new context: a study on immigrating food entrepreneurs2016Inngår i: People moving with food: Food, migration and multiculturalism, 2016Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

An interest in small-scale food production has emerged in many regions of Sweden (Rytkönen, Bonow & Wramner, 2013). The products in specific regions are linked to their origin and authenticity since they stem from a site-specific tradition, e.g. terroir (van Leeuwen, Roby, Pernet and Bois, 2010) that is older than the industrialized food production (Nygård and Wramner, 2103). Related to the idea of terroir is the concept of patrimonisation that has become popular in parts of Europe with a movement of small-scale local food production, getting away from globalization, centralization and industrialization and instead focusing on food without additives and substitutes. Patrimonisation expresses the wish to preserve a rural landscape and traditional food products connected to a local heritage (Gade, 2004). Since local lay knowledge of how to grow food and local food culture have been largely lost, it is through the experience of small-scale food producers, their practical hands-on expertise and adapting expert knowledge to local conditions, that some of the knowledge can be rebuilt (Fonte, 2008). This knowledge is found in our case studies focusing on foreign food entrepreneurs moving to Sweden. The geographical region in which a person is born and raised will permanently influence that person's view of itself and this regional imprint remains when the person moves to a new location (Nygård and Wramner, 2013).

Our research interest is to understand how patromonisation is shaping food entrepreneurs when moved to a different location.

We have studied two immigrated rural entrepreneurs interested in small-scale food production and community development; the Charcuterie farm entrepreneurs from Germany and the Goat farm entrepreneurs from Switzerland. The charcuterie products are produced by German handcrafted manufacturing methods and given German names but locally produced in Halland, Sweden. So, the locally produced charcuterie is sold with a German geographical identity i.e. terroir since the production is based on the owners self-educated knowledge of the German craftsmanship and quality standards. The regional imprint then remains even when moving to a new location (Nygård and Wramner, 2013). The reason for the owners of the Charcuterie farm to start a charcuterie in Sweden was due to weaker legislation for producing charcuterie and that the Swedish farm prices were very attractive. Attractive prices were also an important reason for the Swiss family to buy a Goat farm in Sweden. The Goat farm is primarily producing goat milk that is sold locally to a Cheese farm that they work closely with. For instance, the cheese farm is offering “genuine Swiss cheese fondue”. The Swiss find it interesting that goat meet is not a delicacy in Sweden and express an interest in making use of the goat meet, instead of what is common in Sweden, discarding it or selling to dog-food producers.

Työhyvinvoinnin mittarit: menetelmät, eurot, päätelmät2006Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
