The comparative study of technological and creative approaches to GRM in Paris and EMS in Stockholm: Two different artistic directions from onecommon idea2014In: Musikforskning idag: Växjö, 11-13 juni 2014, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This research examines the evolution of electroacoustic music at GRM (Groupe de Re-cherches Musicales) and at EMS (Elektronmusikstudion) encompassing a period from 1965 to 1980. The thesis follows a comparative course in order to investigate Pierre Schaeffer’s musical ideas acknowledged by Knut Wiggen during the foundation of EMS studio and how EMS differs from GRM in 70s. The first step put into perspective two centres regarding their institutional organisation, their cultural aspects, the research, the educa-tion and the artistic evolution based on Schaeffer’s and Wiggen’s reflexions within the development of music technology. The following step focuses on the compositional ideas and proceedings by means of the pioneer works analysis in order to justify the compari-son of two artistic directions and to explore the problem of acousmatic music analysis. The analysis method is based on Jean Molino’s tripartite theory developed by J.J. Nattiez (esthesic/poietic/neutral level of an art work) for understanding the compositional structure, organisation and the composer style related to technological equipment of the studios. The aim is to determine a methodology for an in-depth understanding of electro-acoustic music analysis through comparison and to establish a scientific docu-mentation on French and Swedish electro-acoustic music within new technologies.

The Emergence of text-composition and its interactions with concrete music: An Analysis of Lars-Gunnar Bodin’s Semikolon - Séance IV2015Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper handles a short comparative study between concrete music and text-sound composition through the musical analysis of Lars-Gunnar Bodin’s Semikolon - Séance IV (1965). The aim of this study is to show some similarities between those two genres from historical and musical points of view. In the former, the research will show how musique concrète and text-sound composition were born at the crossroads of early creative approaches in music and in literature based on the remarkable contribution of recording devices. The latter will discuss with the help of musical analysis of Bodin’s Semikolon, how text-sound composition and concrete music adopted some parallel philosophical concepts during the process of composition.

    Abstract [en]

The current research is a comparative study investigating the development of creative and technological approaches at GRM (Groupe de Recherches Musicales) and EMS (Elektronmusikstudion) from 1965 to 1980. The thesis examines the main interactions between two pioneers of electroacoustic music in France and in Sweden, namely, Pierre Schaeffer and Knut Wiggen and the evolution of artistic directions within their institutions. The comparative method borrows two main perspectives from linguistics, such as diachronic and synchronic. To this direction, the first part of the thesis evaluates a sort of historical synthesis of musical genres, which lead the artistic directions of those two studios, including their institutional organization, musical creation, technological research as well as Schaeffer’s and Wiggen’s musical concepts. The second part of the thesis focuses on pioneer works analysis in order to explore closely compositional ideas and the problem of acousmatic music analysis. The analysis method is based on Jean Molino’s tripartite theory developed by J.J. Nattiez (poietic/neutral/esthesic level of an art work) and Stéphane Roy, which contributes to analyze the compositional structure, organization and the composer’s style related to technological equipment of the studios. The first step of music analysis reconstructs a sort of transcription within the neutral level analysis by means of Lasse Thoresen’s graphical symbols inspired by Schaeffers’s typo-morphology. The second step seeks to confront the neutral level results with external poietic information in order to explore and to compare some hypothetical significations of analyzed musical pieces. In conclusion, the end goal is to determine a methodology inspired by the tripartite theory for an in-depth understanding of acousmatic music analysis and to establish a historical documentation on French and Swedish electroacoustic music within the development of technology.

Aniara - en revy om människan i tid och rum: Stil som meningsbärare2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The opera Aniara by Karl-Birger Blomdahl premiered in 1959 and gained much attention forcombining its general serial style with other musical stylistic elements, as it alludes to and citesworks of other styles such as romanticism and jazz. This circumstance was considered amongother things to have led to Aniaras success, as it made the modernistic music more accessible to ageneral audience. I analyse two scenes in Aniara which contain allusions to and citations ofEllington's Ko-ko, Alfvén's Midsommarvaka, Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony, Beethoven's Ninthand the Swedish psalm Tryggare kan ingen vara regarding their intertextual meanings andaccording to Claudia Gorbman's theory of narrativity in film music. The overall function of theallusions and citations is to describe the conflicting emotions and mental states of the people ofthe spaceship Aniara: how they react to the occurring events during their voyage in space andtheir lack of hope. The intertextual references deepen the understanding of the narrative, and thesections with allusions are perhaps comparable to the aria in 1800th century opera, while themainly modernistic passages have a function similar to the drama-propelling recitative. Stylisticdiversity was not new in 20th century opera at the time of Aniara's premiere, however, the clearintertextuality of Blomdahl's allusions in service of narrative can be seen as ahead of its time.

Uppkäftiga ungar och oförargliga barn: Barn i svensk skämtpress 1894-19242006Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Drawings and anecdotes involving children in the two satirical magazines Söndags-Nisse and Strix during the years from 1894–1924 constitute the material. The main aim of this thesis has been to study how children are portrayed and what roles have been assigned to them. A secondary aim has been to highlight the relationship between text and pictures. In connection with this, the cartoonists’ contributions in the satirical press have been analysed. The third aim is to put the jokes in a humour theory perspective to obtain an answer to the question of what type of joke occurs in the magazines.

The material has been analysed in seven groups on the basis of the characteristics assigned to the children: “the revealing child”, “the truth-telling child”, “the cheeky child”, “the clever and inventive child”, “the mischievous child”, “the wicked child” and “the naïve child”. In the first four groups, it is a strong and rebellious child who appears in the pages of the magazines: a child who dares to go against the adult world and stand up for itself. These children reveal a great deal about the period in which they lived. These drawings and jokes have been analysed in relation to the contemporary context.

In the other groups the child created is not distinguished by such strong characteristics. Here, a joke is made of the child’s wickedness, stupidity or naivety: more general concepts. It has not, therefore, been possible to put these anecdotes into a contemporary context to the same extent.

Throughout, it is the adults asking the questions and the children answering them. This has been interpreted as an expression of the power of the adults vis-à-vis the children.

The seven groups represent two types of joke. The research shows that, in the satirical jokes, the role of the children is, in the first instance, to inform about contemporary circumstances while the role of the children in the amusing jokes is principally to entertain the adult readership.

Blomdahls respektive Lidholms melodiska tonspråk på 1940-talet2013In: Musikforskning idag 2013: Abstracts, 2013Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Disjunct Intervals within Melody: Meanings and Functions through Schenkerian and Post-Schenkerian Theories2015In: Principles of Music Composing [Muzikos komponavimo principai]: Phenomenon of Melody [Melodijos fenomenas], Vilnius: Lietuvos muzikos ir teatro akademija , 2015, p. 27-35Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Composing melody with disjunct intervals is not only a question of taste and style, but also a question of meaning and function. Thus, disjunct intervals may play different roles within melodic structures. Theoreticians from the 20th century have given new insights to analysts, performers and composers. Among them, Heinrich Schenker elaborated a theory that concerns the melodic structure, unfolding and implication within the musical organism. Followers developed further the ideas in different directions. The paper will propose a comparative study about the disjunct interval according to Schenker, to Schenkerian teachers (from Salzer to Cadwallader) and to post-Schenkerian theorists. A systematic presentation along with analytic examples will efficiently highlight the different meanings, tools, and graphic representations. The study will thus put forward what a student or a teacher in composition may learn from this evolution and this may contribute to renew melodic approach and creativity.

    Abstract [en]

Karl-Birger Blomdahl (1916-1968) and Ingvar Lidholm (1921- ) were two leading figures in modern Swedish music. While studying in Stockholm they created a study circle known as the Monday Group. Regarded as anti-romanticists, Blomdahl and Lidholm revitalized musical creation by prioritizing compositional technique (as in hantverk, i.e. craft), melodic line and Gestalt concepts such as organicism.

Following a study of this shared historical, aesthetic and theoretical framework, this thesis proposes a detailed analysis of thirty works by Blomdahl and Lidholm, dating from the 1940s. Based on the initial aesthetic and theoretical context and also on the theories of Schenker and Meyer, the analytical method used enables a graphical and textual representation of the compositional coherence and dynamic of the respective works.

This thesis establishes the essential melodic, tonal and organic divergences in the musical languages of Blomdahl and Lidholm. Additionally, this thesis shows that the notions of linearity, dissonance and counterpoint have a deeper significance in Blomdahl’s and Lidholm’s respective musical languages than is to be found in many texts dating from this period. Finally, this thesis highlights aesthetic and compositional components that significantly invigorate modern music in Sweden.

    Abstract [fr]

Melodic Structures through the Syncretic Method: Towards a Deeper Understanding of Musical Elaborations and Gestures2016In: 32nd World Conference On Music Education ISME Conference, Glasgow, UK, 24th-29th July 2016.: Music: for Identity, for Well-being, for Justice, 2016Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Melodic Structures through the Syncretic Method: Towards a Deeper Understanding of Musical Elaborations and Gestures

Teaching melody comes usually at best down to a necessary but basic phraseology, without any regard to melodic elaborations, intervallic functions, and musical gestures. However, the syncretic method gives renewed perspectives on melodic analysis, and on composition and performance. It critically gathers principles and tools mainly from the theories of Heinrich Schenker and Leonard B. Meyer, and from the pedagogical method of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. Basically, the Schenkerian approach is central to the syncretic method because of its structure through synchronic levels; the Meyerian approach is important because of its melodic classification and terminology, which refer to gestural representations (such as axial melodies); and Dalcroze Eurhythmics comes within the mentioned theoretical framework by bringing a physical and cognitive dimension.

The syncretic method is concerned with the functions played by disjunct and conjunct intervals within melodic structures. It enables to represent these functions and the melodic elaborations through three levels (surface, intermediate, and deep). The mental approach and understanding of melodic processes are deepened through bodily training. Thus, the syncretic method clarifies the melodic unfolding, its main directed motion and its successive gestural ornamentations.

This paper aims to present how accessible and beneficial the syncretic method is for students at different levels. Thus, it requires two main comparisons. The first one regards the comparison between not trained and trained students within using the method. Questions to be answered are: what knowledge do students get quantitatively and qualitatively, when studying and applying this method? How efficient and useful is the method and its learning? Does the method influence the students’ intellectual approach of the music and their practical musicianship?

The second comparison concerns the students involved, all from Stockholm. The first group gathers students from a sixth-form music school, the second group studies at the university, and the third group follows the Eurhythmics program at the Royal College of Music. Is the method possibly as efficient for all these students or do their respective musical education play a role regarding the learning, and the response to the method?

The study will be done through a series of workshops, mainly based on music of the common practice area and the 20th century.

A systematic presentation at the conference will highlight the syncretic method and the results of this study. This paper will thus put forward what the method may imply for music education, especially regarding a renewed approach of the melodic phenomenon.

Themes from the galant style through the syncretic method2015Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The syncretic method contributes to renew the analytical understanding of tonal and post-tonal music, especially concerning the melodic dimension. Its main purpose consists in manifesting how melodies are structured, regarding linearity and elaborations. Its efficiency resides in the logical combination of terminologies and graphic representations of the music, which mainly emanate from the theories of Schenker and Meyer. Besides some new stylistic aspects that it highlights, it is able to transmit a spatial understanding of the musical movement. This has consequences both for musicology and music pedagogy.

This paper will critically (1) set out the principal tools and the graphic representation of the method, (2) submit the analysis of themes from the period of the galant style, and (3) put forward some new stylistic aspects that the syncretic method highlights, compared to analyses of previous theories. Thus, the paper will show how the syncretic method gives a gathered and useful response regarding musicological and music pedagogical perspectives.

    Abstract [en]

In Stockholm, the teaching of music theory is under remodelling due to national reforms and to the teachers’ work in order to give prominence to the theoretical subjects. A lack of knowledge of the pedagogical practices between schools and institutions, and within some schools, is however obvious. This study, conducted in 2015 in Stockholm, aims to establish the current situation of the music theory and analysis teaching in the specialized schools and institutions. Firstly, the article gives a survey of the Swedish education system and of the participating schools and institutions. Secondly, it reports the actual courses (titles, hour volumes, aims), the course literature (books, teaching methods) and the analytical methods used. The article concludes on the functions mainly given to music, theory, and analysis within the different teaching forms.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

How may the practice of photography shift ways of looking at oneself and at one's community? Can creating visual narratives also support reexamining the past, whereby old pictures and other objects gain new significance? This article addresses these questions in a study of several workshops on transmedial storytelling in the town of St. Ana Zegache, Oaxaca, Mexico. We chose photography as the primary medium for the workshops, based on our interest in the visual vernacular and the relative ease of using simple cameras to acquire first-person accounts of everyday experience. We did not anticipate that participants would seize the opportunity to work across media, to include other objects and images, weaving alternative histories into their stories.

We found that telling stories through photographs opened possibilities for some participants to reinterpret experiences of the self in relation to place, community and beliefs. This became ‘empowering’ in the moment when each person presented his or her story, sharing this reinterpretation with other workshop participants, simultaneously re-enacting his or her place within the community. Examples included experiences of migration, familial relations, and their own creative practice.

Old photographs and objects, as repositories of histories and memories, acquired new dimensions when incorporated into contemporary stories.  Participants also reflected on the value of their narratives beyond the immediate community, to people elsewhere who would be interested in the culture of Zegache, and ‘how we live here.’ They saw the digital interface as a network offering the possibility of sharing their stories with an audience from afar. The reflexive power of photography in this context revealed the image as multidimensional, beyond visual representation, encompassing both individual and collective experience.

Ambivalent Screens: Quentin Tarantino and the Power of Vision2015In: Film-Philosophy, E-ISSN 1466-4615, Vol. 19, p. 85-104Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Reveling in the self-reflexive and the metacinematic, Quentin Tarantino's films are often associated with a Baudrillardian postmodernity. His most recent Inglorious Basterds (2009) continues in the same self-referential vein as his earlier films but adds a blatant falsification of history which pushes the question of the reality and images even further. But, this essay asks, is a Baudrillardian perspective the most fruitful one in comprehending the creative potential of Tarantino's latest film? Moving from Baudrillard through Virilio to Deleuze and Guattari, the essay explores ways in which the film's investment in vision and screens opens for a creative and enabling engagement with images - not cinema as truth, as Deleuze would have it, but the truth of cinema. As such, Tarantino's in many ways outrageous film provides an important contribution to analyzes of the relation between perceptions of the image and conceptions of the real and contributes to the politically crucial endeavor of understanding what images 'want.'

CRITICAL APPROACHES TO THE DIFFICULTIES OF ATTRIBUTION AND DATING OF FRANCESCO GUARDI’S VEDUTE2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master of Fine Arts (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Venetian veduta or view, became popular in the Settecento when Venice had turned into a regular stop on the Grand Tour. The foreign market’s interest in vedute, prompted Venetian artists to follow in Canaletto’s path. Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) is today famous for such views, and his paintings hang in museums around the world. One of his vedute, Piazza San Marco, Venice, was bought by the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm in 1964. In 1990, however, the Nationalmuseum changed the attribution of the painting. What prompted such a change? This thesis critically discusses the difficulty of attribution and dating of vedute in the Eighteenth century, specifically of paintings by the artist Francesco Guardi. Moreover, it presents and examines the strengths and weaknesses of the different attributional methods based on documentary, stylistic, topographic and technical approach, and with what success scholars have used them to establish a chronology of Francesco Guardi's oeuvre. Due to its well documented history, the painting, Piazza San Marco, Venice, will serve as a case study for the difficulties of attributing and dating Francesco Guard’s vedute, and the thesis will present evidence to Piazza San Marco, Venice,’s authenticity as a Francesco Guardi autograph.

BLOOD AND SPERM - AND CUNTS: An analysis of the In-Yer-Face theatre genre ́s approach to female roles and characters2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This essay explores the genre of In-Yer-Face theatre and its representation of women. In-Yer-Face theatre emerged in the 1990s in the UK, characterised by its confrontational style and provocative themes. While the genre is often associated with the portrayal of violence and aggression towards women, this essay explores how In-Yer-Face theatre may also offer a platform for women's stories and experiences. Through an analysis of The Censor, Blasted and the performances of Shopping and fucking and Look back in anger, the essay researches how In-Yer-Face theatre explores traditional gender roles and the ways in which women are often subjected to violence, exploitation, and objectification. The essay will use both a drama analysis and performance analysis of two plays and two performances from the genre to explore different views from the most prominent writers of the genre.Ultimately, this essay argues that In-Yer-Face theatre has an opportunity to offer a powerful and complex representation of women that demands critical engagement and interpretation but in many ways reproduces the societal norms.

Defence by demolition? Preserving and relocating the cloister of Segovia cathedral2021In: Notes and records of the Royal Society of London, ISSN 0035-9149, E-ISSN 1743-0178, Vol. 76, no 2, p. 237-252Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In 1520, Segovia's rebel city council besieged the impregnable royal fortress located on a narrow stone outcrop at the far west of the city. The cathedral stood just in front of the fortress, and the rebels demolished part of the church's structure to use it as a secure stronghold. Beyond the physical damage, the revolt demonstrated the peril posed by the proximity of cathedral and castle. Unsurprisingly, it was soon decided that the cathedral would be relocated to the city's main square. Deserted by its canons and chaplains, the old church was a ruin by 1562, while its younger counterpart was slowly reaching completion. Neglect coexisted with preservation: the first step in the construction of a new cathedral was the decision to move the building's cloister—stone by stone—from the old to the new site. This paper discusses the relocation, exploring its denouement and contextualizing it within pre-modern perspectives on heritage and architecture. In the early sixteenth century, the cathedral of the Castilian city of Segovia was relocated from the edge of the city to its main square. A new church was begun in 1525. Construction continued well into the seventeenth century, as the old building decayed and was eventually dismantled. Exceptionally, the cloister of the old cathedral was disassembled stone by stone and carefully—but not exactly—re-erected at the new site. This article explores the cloister's destruction and reconstruction from the perspective of architectural preservation and architectural history.

Ungdom i fara: ungdomsproblem i svensk spelfilm 1942-621998Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis treats the way juvenile delinquency is depicted in Swedish feature films made between 1942 and 1962. The study makes a historical survey of the youth-going-astray films, how they portray contemporary society and life and convey their conception of youth related problems. The analysis is primarily based upon role analyses with the tliematics and cultural reception of the films in focus.

The analysis studies not only about twenty films that deal mainly with the subject, but also a number of films concerning other youth related subjects such as prostitution, sexual problems and, as a counterweight, the well-behaving youth, for instance youth engaged in associations. Furthermore, the analysis gives a picture of the public reception of tire films, both by critics and the Board of Film Censors.

The main point of the analysis is tire way the films mirror a widespread contemporary opinion. Thus, the relation between tire debate and tire film is analysed, as well as tire extent to which tire contemporary debate and the "politically correct” values catch on in Swedish film. To a large extent, Swedish films reflect the views expressed in the Public Inquiries of the State and in middle-of-the-road opinions in the debate. The majority of films try to stick to the middle course between the conservative line demanding stronger measures and the progressive line associating with the new pedagogy and liberal upbringing.

    Abstract [en]

This doctoral thesis deals with Peter Weiss’ (1916-1982) films and some of his never finished attempts. The focus is in general on Weiss’ film work activities in the 1950’s, when film held the very central place in his works of art.

The intention has been to interrogate what short films Peter Weiss made and to find out the meaning and the role of film in the life of the artist Peter Weiss. The conclusion is that Peter Weiss fought with personal difficulties in expressing himself in a language — a language of words and a language of signs — because it is assumed that Peter Weiss carried a very strong will to become an author. In order to “conquer the words” Weiss exercised himself in describing all kinds of worlds — an interior one as well as an exterior one. That explains why he dealt with surrealist psychological subjects and documentary forms while making films.

Medeltida kollekttavlor från Gotland2019In: Myntstudier, ISSN 1652-2303, no 2, p. 1-90Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

The transparitions of time in space in four fiction films by Knut Erik Jensen2005Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Knut Erik Jensen’s oeuvre is often described from a typical Norwegian point of view. The corpus of films studied is restricted to his documentary production and to the breakthrough of Stella Polaris in 1993. But as I discovered Knut Erik Jensen through his posterior fiction films, I had to focus on this under esteemed production, even if I remain convinced that the dichotomy between the documentary and fiction films is not very pertinent. As Passing Darkness had blurred my reading of Gilles Deleuze’s books dedicated to cinema, I started to focus on both this film and Deleuze’s philosophical approach. I linked then Knut Erik Jensen’s films to other filmmakers who in my sense had the same concerns.

As history is first a matter of geography, I based the reflection on the works by Alain Resnais, Jean-Daniel Pollet and the texts by Jean Epstein. But as the study went on, I realized that a classical study could not validate Jensen’s aesthetic as the alchemical concerns of both Jean Epstein, Edgar Morin or Gilles Deleuze were dealing with either a source or a result. Living at the era of the networks and influenced by some seminars in France regarding the figure and the networks inside the image, I focused on the philosopher stone in order to find an alternative to the crystal image and other postulates. Using some previous knowledge regarding the alchemy, I used the cycle of the azoth in the sea, one of the main characters in Jensen’s aesthetic as being a way to consider the loss of the source and of the result. Instead of opposing time, space and then a questioning of the space/time continuum, I refuted the organic regime (which has been dead for about forty years in film) to focus on the mineral one (through the crystal image and other reflections) and the gaseous one (the development of the transparitions).

Images Travelling from Rock Art to SouthSaami Drums: A Comparative Study2019Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study of resemblances in form between images in rock art in northern Sweden and theimagery on South Saami drums has three results. The first is that some images had basiccriteria in common that seemed to overlap and pointing in one common direction. Thesecond result is that even if some images are executed in ”a stick figure fashion” they werepossible to link to images that are more exact replicas of the possible motifs. The thirdinsight is that some of the studied images due to their simple design were more of a symbolfor what is depicted than an image of it.

Performansen är inte enbart det synliga: En jämförande studie av rekreering av Yves Kleins performans Saut dans le vide2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

I båda fallen påverkar konstnärens biografi konstkritikernas tolkningar, vilket diskuteras i uppsatsens avslutande del utifrån Roland Barthes begrepp ”the death of the author”.

Sökord: Tala Madani, Eric Fischl, receptionsanalys, konstkritik, The Death of the Author, Roland Barthes, stereotypisering, biografiska implikationer, Mellanöstern.

Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The subject of this dissertation is privately owned gardens in Sweden circa 1900–1930 and aims to identify and make visible their meaning and impact on different societal levels. Sweden, like many other European countries, faced profound societal changes during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This was in part due to a major increase in population, the development of new urban environments, a growing working class, and migration within and out of the country. The culmination of these circumstances had an impact on the development of society, more broadly, and on housing, in particular.

Prior scholarly inquiries across multiple disciplines have studied the home as a locus for various social relations and expressions of aesthetic ideals. However, the outdoor space of the home has not been specifically included or emphasized in previous research. The focus of this dissertation is therefore to examine gardens within the private sphere – in physical form as well as in their conceptions –  concentrating on spatial organization and material constitution within the social context of the time. The aim is to make visible the ways in which the garden acted as an important part of the construction of the ideal home, in theory as well as in practice. In so doing, gardens and garden practices of the early twentieth century are historically, culturally, and socially situated.

The theoretical framework is built upon the concept of texture which combines the theoretical fields of spatial theory and materiality. The approach and the use of texture emphasize the material elements that are essential in the constitution of the garden (but not always considered meaningful in their own right), as well as the relationship between humans and their surroundings, particularly with regard to home-making and relating practices. It includes analyses of individual materials’ physical conditions and the way they are experienced with the senses. Furthermore, it highlights the material and visual merging of materials as a perceived whole and the relation of the parts to that whole. Finally, it elucidates the socio-cultural relations between objects and environments which are then experienced, used, and changed by human subjects.

The dissertation demonstrates the various meanings of the garden and garden practices, based on a vast set of empirical sources selected on principles of geographical and demographical diversity during the selected time period. The result is presented in case studies. These include analyses of garden literature, the work of county gardeners employed by the Agricultural Society, and educational institutions such as Lillie Landgren’s Torshäll (Dalarna County). Furthermore, particular sites are investigated, such as the mining town of Boliden (Västerbotten County), and the private gardens of Crown Princess Margareta at Sofiero (Skåne County) and Ellen Key at Strand (Östergötand County). The study reveals the multifaceted functions of the garden. The conception of the garden’s potential was made visible in publications and visual material, which provided exemplary gardens, cultivated by – and at the same time cultivating – the human actors. The study’s emphasis on the manual elaboration of materials with a certain aesthetic ideal or practical purpose as the objective confirms that the garden is a result of spatial, material, and social prerequisites, all coalescing as the texture of the garden.

Färg och gestik i Sankta Anna-altarskåpet från Skånela kyrka i Uppsala Domkyrka2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose of this essay has been to examine the color's and gesticulation's impact on the altarpiece staging of the stories and thus the message. The essay has a semiotic perspective as a starting point. The material for the study is a flemish altarpiece from Skånela church that exists today in Uppsala Cathedral. The altarpiece is dedicated to Joachim and St. Anne. The study has been limited to only analyze the six sculptured scenes in the corpus. The analyzes have been performed through a formal description and discussion by Lena Liepes low iconographycal analysis and with Norbert Otto's three-step approach for gesture features. Lena Liepe's method and theory was used as a basis for the investigation. The study connects to Virginia Nixon's research on Jesus' grandmother in church art.

It was found that the color and gesticulation analyzes enables a nuanced interpretation. The investigation has shown that the color and gestures are an actuation in order to lead the viewer towards a hidden message in the picture. And that there is a link between Skånela altarpiece's messages and the medieval misogyny that prevailed then. Anne-altarpiece contains messages that are characterized by the contemporary child and female visions.

Virtuella distinktioner : en studie av kultfilmsfankultur på internet2006Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Ofta flyter de in i varandra.
