From a residence to a home: Concepts of comfort and luxury of the Swedish ironmasters during the late 18th and erly 19th century2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

My paper is a part of my research project that focuses on the ironmasters of Bergslagen, a district in Sweden where mining and metallurgic industry have been important since the Middle Ages. In my project I study how the ironmasters build a common identity and common goals, as well as forming themselves as an influential elite group in society. This paper focuses on their mansions and the idea of creating a home, suitable for an up and coming ironmaster. From the late 18th century, many of the ironmasters lived permanently on their estates close to the iron works. Smaller and simpler houses were kept in the cities, mostly Stockholm, to ensure connections to the corridors of power and to the pleasures of the country's capital city. The mansions were often situated in remote places, depending on good roads or at least a decent winter that made it possible to travel and transport heavy goods, such as the vital charcoal and iron, but also goods to the mansions. What did the ironmasters discuss regarding their homes? How did they furnished (and re-model) their mansions and what did they consider needed to be there, to make it a comfortable home? And what was 'comfort' for them and how did this correlate with how the notion of 'home' was conceptualized?

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Migrant physicians’ conceptions of working in rural and remote areas in Sweden: A qualitative study2019In: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 14, no 1, article id e0210598Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Objective

To explore migrant physicians’ conceptions about working in rural and remote areas in Sweden to understand what influences their motivation to work in these areas.

    Method and material

The study employed a qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews with 24 migrant physicians. Transcripts were thematically analysed.

    Results

Conceptions were identified about foremost work content and tasks, and about living in rural and remote areas. Work content and tasks related to the health care systems, type of health care facility, duties, specialty, resources, patient population, colleagues, and professional development. Conceptions about living concerned geographical characteristics, people living in rural and remote areas, opportunities for travelling, family, leisure activities, social life, and language skills. Conceptions seemed to be influenced by individual, professional and societal aspects from both previous countries and Sweden. Conceptions and biographical aspects both appeared to affect motivation.

    Discussion

Motivation regarding working in rural and remote areas appeared to be influenced by conceptions of these areas. A specific type of place could be understood as being able to provide (or not) the external conditions needed for fulfilling needs and reaching goals, whether professional or personal, and as a tool for reaching or facilitating the achievement of these. Conceptions of an area can hence affect motivation and choices for where to work and live. However, biographical aspects also impact motivation. Our results indicate that positive rural experience in the recipient country might be a predictor for motivation.

    Conclusion

Professional and personal life and are intertwined. Conceptions about an area influence willingness to work there. Willingness is also affected by, and intertwined with, other aspects such as previous experiences, age, marital status and family circumstances.

    Abstract [en]

What happens when well-educated, highly skilled professionals leave their country of origin to work abroad? How do they make use of their skills and competences in another organizational framework and cultural context, and do they experience any limits regarding the acknowledgement of their seemingly transnational competences and diplomas? What kind of obstacles do they meet and what are their strategies for reestablishing professionalism and status in a new setting? In this chapter, we present the results from our ethnographic study “Polish Doctors in Swedish Medical Care”1 as a point of departure for a Bourdieu-inspired discussion on negotiations regarding symbolic capital in another national medical field (cf. Bourdieu 1984, 1988) and the conditions and limitations of transnational mobility of symbolic capital.

    Abstract [en]

The article, based on 43 narrative interviews with Swedish physicians and molecular biologists, discusses family timing and family management as crucial factors in temporary international mobility of highly skilled professionals. In the narratives, the family often created a kind of inertia and complication for a prolonged period of working abroad. The interviewees’ dreams and wishes had to be negotiated with a partner pursuing his/her own career, as well as the rest of the family, and there were also a lot of logistics and practicalities to take care of. However, mobility was also regarded as an amazing opportunity for the whole family to be together and to learn about new cultural and social contexts. In several narratives, the temporary and thus “parenthetic” living abroad influenced the otherwise cherished ideals of dual careers, equal gender contract and a respectful parenthood.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The research subject is the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm as a public institution between 1943 and 2013. I examine how public spaces in the museum body are designed in relation to cultural policy objectives and the museum’s vision of a democratic, inclusive museum. However, the focus is not on the museum’s exhibits, but on other public spaces visitors encounter in the museum, mainly the entrance, the shop and children’s spaces. These spaces tend to be invisible in the museum hierarchy, and their practices are rarely observed in museum studies. Main research questions are: How are democratic ideals materialized and expressed over time? Which publics are created by the public spaces?

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate what underlying causes drive people to take part in the Swedish autonomous left-wing movement. The autonomous left-wing movement is an extraparliamentary mob, in Sweden often attributed in negative terms, considered as extremists. Interviewing six activists has given me the chance to better understand the movement in terms of ideology as well as understanding their lack of reliability in the Swedish government and other social structures. The study also shows a complexity in the relationship between the interviewees and fascists, as well as in the Swedish police and the Swedish migration office, which is based on a combination of ideological values as well as a lack of trust to the Swedish system as a whole.

    Abstract [en]

Cultural Perspectives on Highly Skilled Mobility

This special issue is based on a panel at the 33rd Ethnology and Folklore Conference in Copenhagen in 2015, and focuses on cultural perspective on international mobility of highly educated employees. The articles’ joint analytical input can be summarized in Russell King’s (2002) phrase “double embeddedness of migration”. Everyday life and people’s narrated experiences are at the heart of the articles, but the focus is also set on the intersection of structural conditions and individual life circumstances. Mobility across national borders contributes with new experiences and knowledge and has different kinds of impact on social status and the individual’s resources acquired by education. This is something the voluntarily mobile have in common with those who are forced to leave their countries of origin. However, there are crucial differences in how highly skilled professionals are received and regarded in the countries they come to, the status they can achieve and the framework within which they can make use of their assets.
