Effects of conventionality and proficiency in metaphor processing: A response time study2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Some researchers that work with metaphor theory claim that metaphors and figurative language are understood and processed just as easily as literal language. However, as this thesis will explore in detail, other research indicates that such is not always the case. That is, if the category of metaphor is further subcategorized into conventional and non-conventional metaphor, the scope will change because of the fact that it is possible to argue that non-conventionalized metaphors require a more conscious path of processing. In order to explain this alternative path, there are two primary approaches to language processing worth introducing: implicit and explicit. These approaches vary in required attention and speed of processing. With regards to conscious effort, these approaches are rather similar to the way in which we process conventionalized and non-conventionalized metaphors. Conventional metaphors are processed more quickly and easily than non-conventional ones. Hence, the claim that all metaphors are similarly processed may not always be true. Furthermore, an individual’s level of proficiency presumably correlates with speed in language processing. However, if non-conventional metaphor requires a more deliberate path of processing, this thesis assumes that the processing of this type of metaphor will be relatively unaffected by proficiency level, thus causing informants to process them in similar manners. In this thesis, 24 non-native speakers (NNS), categorized into intermediate proficient and advanced proficient, and seven native speakers (NS) were tested with an RT-test on subjective metaphor comprehension. Results were compared using mean response times and standard deviations, as well as looking at correlations and coefficient of variation. The results showed a distinct difference in processing speed with conventional metaphors being processed significantly faster. Moreover, the findings indicate that conventional metaphor processing speed seems to be predicted by proficiency, whilst non-conventional processing speed is not. The RT differences remained relatively consistent in both conventional and non-conventional metaphor processing, but when taking correlations, variance and coefficient of variation into consideration, the findings indicate that these other factors help level out the differences in non-conventional metaphor processing in more subtle ways than simply by RT’s.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [es]

'You Never Truly Feel at Home': Students' Perceptions of their Multilingualism and its Role in their Identity Construction: - A Study Performed in a Suburb Located in a Socially Vulnerable Area2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

A relevant subject in our globalized world concerns the relationship between language and identity, specifically amongst migrant youngsters’ experience of group belonging. This study therefore focused on how adolescents born to foreign parents in Sweden, perceived their multilingualism as part of their identity formation. I also aimed to include how socio-economic aspects could affect the process of identity construction. Thus, the investigation was performed with seventh grade students at a primary school located in the Stockholm suburb Bredäng. The methods consisted of a questionnaire, which was completed by the entire class and a group interview where six students participated. The results revealed that students adapted their language use based on the context, but Swedish was used most habitually. The informants viewed their multilingualism as beneficial but yet fully aware of the linguistic ideologies functioning in society. By combining their minority and majority language, the students were left with different ethnic identities and had diverse interpretations of what it meant to be Swedish. Even though all of them perceived themselves to have multiple ethnic identities, this was not solely seen positively. The issue of belonging was raised and the students claimed to be outcasts everywhere. However, the results differed depending on whether the students were born in Sweden or not. Also, most of them struggled with the process of assumed and ascribed identities, since they perceived themselves to be Swedish but experienced that society valued them as immigrants. Lastly, the study revealed that there were connections between their multilingualism and social mobility as the relationship towards the motherland was highly prioritized even with low levels of economic capital.

Gender Stereotypes and Representation in EFL Textbooks2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This essay contains a qualitative discourse analysis of two EFL textbooks that are being used for English 5 in Swedish upper secondary schools today. The analysis is focused on gender equality in terms of gender representation in occupational roles and in general, as well as how males and females are depicted in terms of character traits and language use. Previous research indicates a diachronic development of gender equality in EFL textbooks. However, it was stated that gender bias was still visible in previously analyzed textbooks and further improvement was needed. In this study an analysis of two modern EFL textbooks was made. The study showed that modern EFL textbooks meet the requirements of the curriculum issued by The Swedish National Agency for Education regarding gender equality to a certain extent. However, further improvement is needed for the modern textbooks to be considered gender equal and for the gender bias in textbooks to be eliminated. In addition, it is necessary for teachers to use their material with a gender equal perspective in mind.

Examining the language ideologies of highly proficient English speakers in Sweden2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Taking into consideration Bourdieu’s theories on language and symbolic power, the current study aims to examine how English speakers in Sweden use language in different settings, at work and outside of work, to determine if language ideologies can be perceived or identified. The method chosen for investigating this was language portraits and semi-structured interviews. Three participants, university staff at an English-speaking department, drew two language portraits each and performed a semi- structured interview. The study showed that there might be a hierarchy of languages apparent both at the workplace and outside, where proficiency in Swedish might be what dictates the reason of exclusion being perceived by the participants.

Secondary students’ perception of English teachers’ motivational strategies.2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aimed to investigate the perception of secondary school students regarding English teachers’ motivational strategies. The investigation focuses on evaluating the effectiveness of these strategies, the frequency of their implementation, and the disjunction between students’ preferred motivational approaches and their perception of teachers’ practices. A digital survey was distributed to 46 students from a suburban school near Stockholm. To analyze the data collection, descriptive statistics and, Wilcoxon matched the pair tests were conducted to determine whether there is a significant difference between paired students’ preferences of motivational strategies and their perception of English teachers’ use of these strategies.

Results indicated that students assign positive ratings to most motivational strategies. Moreover, students consistently rated their English teachers’ motivational strategy use quite highly, with a low standard deviation, reflecting that student participants shared similar opinions. At times, the Wilcoxon matched-pair test exhibits a statistically significant difference between students’ preferred motivational strategies and their perception of teachers’ practices. Despite the teachers’ high utilization of motivational strategies, students’ expectations appear to be higher.

Peloton versus Pack & Bunch: A study of French lexical borrowing in live English cycling commentary2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The sport of cycling is an ever expanding global phenomenon, drawing crowds in their thousands to watch the races unfold. Its community has a distinct vocabulary, with many terms borrowed from several other languages, principally French. This study investigates the presence of French loanwords in the language of English cycling commentators, and to what extent these loanwords are used in comparison to their English equivalents. It also examines extra-linguistic factors that could affect the commentator’s choice of vocabulary, mainly the location of the race. The study investigated the language of English commentators from live broadcast of 6 different races: 2 located in English speaking countries, 2 in France, and 2 countries where neither French nor English was the native language. All utterances of French loanwords and their English counterparts were noted and collected for analysis. The findings demonstrated a clear presence of French loanwords in the language of the commentators, with a varying degree of frequency. Some loanwords were preferred over their English equivalents, whilst others were not. The location did not seem to have a significant impact on the choice of vocabulary, with the exception of the only race held outside of Europe, where the commentators demonstrated a clear preference for English terminology over French loanwords. The analysis concluded that many different extra-linguistic factors may play a role in the commentator’s choice of vocabulary.

    Abstract [sv]

Finding case through personal names in parallel texts2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to evaluate whether the ‘richness’ of the marking on personal names is an adequate indirect measure of a language’s case usage. The method uses parallel texts to identify, and group by lemma, names in over a thousand languages. These groupings are compared with data for case usage from a typological database for those languages for which it is available. This material is then used to test a method for assessing whether a language uses case or not. Results indicate that the maximum number of word types a proprial lemma is attested with in a text is a useful tool for inferring case usage. However, it only yielded clear results for a subset of the languages tested. It was not particularly useful for inferring the absence of case usage. Estimation of number of case categories was also performed. An entropy measure based on word types that a personal name lemma is attested with and the occurrences of these word types was used. It was found to be a fair indicator of number of case categories for languages, if somewhat inaccurate. Markings on languages which had no case were investigated. They were found to be of several types: pragmatic markers, non-case grammatical markers and case-like markers. Two languages with few markings on personal names and with case were investigated. They were found to not use any case marking on their personal names, but still use such markers on common nouns. This contrasts with a tentative generalization that this study is based on: ‘No languages have case marking exclusively in the domain of [personal names] or [common nouns].’ (Handschuh, 2017).

Foreignisation and Domestication Strategies in Swedish–Korean Translation: A Case Study on Children’s Literature2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The import of Swedish Children’s Literature has increased in South Korea in recent years. The challenges that arise when translating between two vastly different languages pose another layer of difficulty if the source text contains cultural references that are not shared in the target language culture. What solutions do translators resort to? And which translation strategies do they opt for? The purpose of this study is to identify translation strategies used to translate culture-specific items and to determine foreignisation and/or domestication strategies in the Korean translation of the Swedish children’s book En liten bok om Kärlek. The method used for this study is a descriptive comparative analysis method based on Newmark’s model for categorising culture-specific items. The findings show that the overall text leaned towards an overall foreignisation strategy of culture-specific items. However, in cases where Swedish and Korean differed to a greater extent, domestication strategies were more common.

"CELLU-LIT": : a pragmatic study of Body Positive Language on Instagram2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, two female-led Instagram accounts within the Body Positivity movement

were analyzed to see what type of linguistic strategies are employed in order to build

solidarity with their followers, as well as establish and maintain a shared group identity.

The analysis was carried out by utilizing Appraisal Theory as taxonomized by Martin

and White (2005) and aspects of Politeness Theory, as taxonomized by Brown and

Levinson (1987). The paper found that the two Instagram users linguistically employed

several aspects of both theories in order to build and maintain a group identity within a

common-identity community. In terms of Politeness Theory the positive politeness

strategies were more common than the negative politeness strategies, specifically were

the positive politeness strategies employed to build common ground and the strategy of

presupposition manipulations the most prevalent. Within the Appraisal theoretical

framework, the most common strategies by the Instagram users were the disclaim:deny

    and the proclaim:pronounce strategies.

Articulation rate as a means of distributing information and its effect on the N400-component2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Information theoretical approaches to language state that the most efficient communication occurs when the amount of information transmitted is distributed as uniformly as possible over time. Previous research has shown that speakers tend to adhere to strategies for distributing information efficiently, using mechanisms at multiple linguistic levels. This study aims to investigate whether articulation rate (AR) is used in continuous speech to achieve a more uniform distribution of information within sentences, quantified as surprisal estimated by the state-of-the-art language model GPT-2, and if this has an effect on the amplitude of the N400 brain response in listeners. In neurolinguistics, surprisal has been observed to be a good predictor of the N400, which is related to processing of semantics and meaning in general. The results showed a significant, though small, effect of surprisal on AR, indicating that AR may have some role in achieving more uniform distribution of information on the word level. In line with previous research, surprisal showed an effect on the N400 where higher surprisal led to larger amplitudes. Results regarding AR and distributional effects on the N400 were inconclusive, although some independent effects of AR were found that could be further explored in more controlled experimental settings.

Neural correlates of pragmatic processing in adolescents2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Understanding indirect speech, i.e., when an utterance does not match the intended meaning, is one of many pragmatic abilities at play in conversation. While the development of pragmatic abilities starts early, they continually develop throughout adolescence although this period is understudied. Recent fMRI-results in adults suggest that pragmatic processing is segregable from other skills, such as core language, theory of mind (ToM), and cognitive control functions. In this thesis, pragmatic processing was investigated in adolescents contrasting indirect and direct speech. Brain activity was measured using fMRI in adolescents listening to short conversations and existing data from adults was used to investigate age-related effects. The bilateral occipital gyri and the cuneus showed stronger activation in adolescents when listening to indirect speech. The cuneus has previously been implicated in ToM-tasks and socio-emotional processing. The results support earlier accounts of differing neural signatures of ToM with age and heightened social sensitivity in adolescence, and could mean that pragmatics draws more on ToM at younger ages. Additional results showed an interaction while listening to parts of the conversations not manipulated by the main contrast: greater activation in adults could in part reflect differences in attention or engagement.

Neural functional connections of pragmatics: A potential pragmatic network in development2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Pragmatic ability is crucial in everyday interactions. In populations of neurotypical individuals, pragmatic skill varies greatly. The neural mechanisms behind the variety, and the neural development of pragmatics remain to be explained. The present study aims to deepen the understanding of pragmatics’ neural basis, by investigating the functional connectivity (FC) between two pragmatically interesting brain clusters during a pragmatic task. The investigated clusters, located in the bilateral, dorsal precuneus and in the left superior inferior parietal cortex were found by Bendtz et al. (2022) to have higher activity for young adults with high pragmatic skill compared to young adults with low pragmatic skill. Mahal (2022) found that the clusters were more functionally connected for the high skilled group during rest. In this study, fMRI data acquired during a pragmatic task was used to analyze the FC between the beforementioned clusters and compare two groups of young adults, one with high pragmatic skill (n = 25) and one with low pragmatic skill (n = 24). The groups of young adults were also compared with a group of 16 - 18 year old adolescents (n = 12). The results revealed higher FC for the high skilled group in both analyses, where the difference between the high skilled group and the adolescents was significant (p=.02). FC-values did not correlate with age in neither age group. The results are suggested to reflect (1) a neural development of pragmatics in adolescence towards a potential pragmatic network that involve increased functional connections between two clusters previously identified as possible neural markers of pragmatic individual variation, and (2) a possible window of opportunity for pragmatic development during adolescence.

SKORR: möjliga orsaker till fenomenet2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Object categorisation in French-Swedish early simultaneous bilinguals.: ARE GENDER EFFECTS MODULATED BY GRAMMAR OR CULTURE?2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

If most scholars tend to agree that the native language of a speaker does influence the way they will understand the reality around them, the question becomes ambiguous when it comes to bilingual speakers’ cognition. How is their reality affected by the combination of their languages? This study aimed at exploring this question under the angle of grammatical gender. Adult simultaneous early bilingualsin French and Swedish were asked, in an innovative experiment, to match a culturally neutral item to a voice. In a second experiment, the same participants were asked to match a culturally loaded item to a voice. In both experiments, items were carefully chosen according to their grammatical gender. Results indicate that grammatical gender was not a predictor of voice assignment. However, the perceived cultural stereotypes of the items used in the second experiment appeared to be a robust predictor of voice assignment. Findings suggest thus that grammatical gender does not affect how simultaneous early bilingualism French and Swedish would conceptualise artifacts, but cultural gender would.

“You are smart for a woman.” A corpus study of the BEXFORY construction2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Grammatical constructions are continuously discovered under the theory of Construction Grammar, and this study will investigate and propose a new construction; the be + X + for + Y (BEXFORY) construction. The syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic properties of the BEXFORY construction are investigated, as well as strategies proposed by Hilpert (2019) as to determine its legitimacy as a construction. As one of the strategies proposed by Hilpert (2019) involves preference of certain collocating words, the research involved a quantitative corpus study. The searches in the corpora were done using an additional intensifier, pretty and quite, as a way to minimise false hits. The results of the data show the most commonly collocating adjectives in the construction, as well as nouns. This study will focus on collocating animate nouns over inanimate nouns and have therefore been categorised accordingly. The results show that the construction show signs of non-compositional meaning, as well as a preference for certain adjectives over others. Since those are both amongst in the proposed strategies by Hilpert (2019), there are indications pointing towards that the BEXFORY construction could get a status as a construction. The preferred adjectives are those describing patterns of how things should or ought to be according to societal expectations or norms. However, due to the limitations of the study further investigation is needed as to determine the most commonly collocating adjectives in the construction, and if that is regarded as strong enough evidence of a construction. On basis of the results, the discussion argues that whilst there are some advantages of using the BEXFORY construction for describing people, there is a risk of discrimination if used on the basis of prejudices or preconceptions. The issue however lies within societal norms rather than the construction itself.

Vokalkvalitet och duration hos diftonger i benadiri och nordsomaliska2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

BELF in the workplace: a linguistic ethnographic study: An observation of English as a lingua franca used by employees at a Swedish company2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper was aimed at researching the use of English as a lingua franca (ELF) in a business context by the use of linguistic ethnography (LE). Previous research has been primarily either survey- or interview-based or strictly qualitative in its investigation. Using shadowing observations of three employees at a Swedish multinational company and subsequently interviewing the participants about their use of Business English as a lingua franca (BELF), the present study set out to investigate for what kinds of functions and how often these employees use English on an everyday basis. English was shown to be the default language of the multinational company and the findings suggest that employees’ use of language is not only determined by the nature of their work and the business setting, but also by their personal backgrounds. Their education, upbringing, and social experiences since moving to Sweden have come to shape their language use at work and in everyday life. Moreover, there could be subsequent implications for them not only in work-related functions and activities at the company but also in their integration and immersion in Swedish society. Using LE to investigate language choice and use in a corporate setting allows for a more nuanced collection of data, providing a context to linguistic research.

Teaching L2 grammar: A study of teachers’ beliefs on frequency, methods and approaches of teaching English grammar in Swedish schools.2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis was to study English teachers' approaches, methods and beliefs that link to teaching grammar to students in Sweden. The research has revolved around how frequently grammar is taught, what approaches are used and what methods are favored by English teachers in Swedish secondary and upper secondary schools. The respondents were 51 teachers recruited through a convenient sampling in the Facebook group “Nätverk för lärare i engelska”. The study used a mixed method with a survey as the data collection instrument. The results show that English teachers in secondary schools and upper secondary schools in Sweden occasionally use grammar teaching. On a four-grade scale ranging from Very Occasionally to Very Often the mean response was 2.36. In terms of preferred approach, the results indicated that a planned approach was preferred by a small margin. These results are in contradiction to previous research on English grammar teaching in Sweden which shows that teachers prefer an incidental approach to grammar teaching. The present study indicates that teachers favored interactive methods of grammar teaching. The two most favored methods were the Task-Based method where students complete tasks in pairs or groups, and the Communicative Language Teaching where students learn through discussions. Analyzing teachers’ beliefs on grammar teaching, the present study focused on the open-ended questions in the survey. The responses indicated that context to grammar teaching is extremely vital according to the teachers who responded to the survey. As previously mentioned, the present study contradicts previous studies in terms of preferred approach to grammar teaching. However, the present study coincides with previous research in terms of preferred methods both in international research but also in Sweden specifically, which is that teachers prefer interactive methods of grammar teaching that involve inductive learning.

Outer Circle Englishes in the Expanding Circle Classroom: A Qualitative Study on Swedish Teachers’ Attitudes towards Singapore English Accents2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The English language has become more globalised, with different varieties and accents being used around the world. English is no longer merely Received Pronunciation (RP); it is equally as central in countries that belong to what is known as the ‘Outer Circle’ in the context of World Englishes and the Three Circles model (Kachru, 1992a). Citizens of these countries often speak multiple languages and some use English as their first language, although it does not always completely resemble the English used within the ‘Inner Circle’ (the United Kingdom, for example). One of these countries is Singapore, where English has become the official language and is also used as a lingua franca (ELF). While Standard Singapore English is used in formal settings, the local Singlish is more common in everyday situations and most Singaporeans can switch between the two depending on their surroundings (Melchers & Shaw, 2011). These accents are, however, not commonly recognised in Sweden, and less so in a teaching context. In the core content of the subject English 5 in Swedish upper secondary schools it is stated that teaching should incorporate “the spread of English and its position in the world” (Skolverket, 2011, p. 3). Nevertheless, the instructional focus tends to be on the culture and traditions of English-speaking countries instead of language use. Therefore, the present study will investigate teachers’ attitudes towards Outer Circle Englishes and, more specifically, Singapore English. The aim is to answer research questions regarding what attitudes English teachers in Swedish upper secondary schools have towards Outer Circle Englishes, attitude differences regarding teaching experience, and what these teachers can do to incorporate these Englishes in their teaching. The respondents include three experienced and three newly graduated English teachers who all teach in Swedish upper secondary schools. The study has a qualitative approach where the data was collected through semi-structured interviews. To examine Singapore English, the respondents also listened to two audio clips of Singapore English speakers and discussed these accents as well as their attitudes towards them. The results show that teachers from both groups need more knowledge regarding Outer Circle Englishes to acquire a more positive attitude towards these to, in turn, portray this positivity onto their students when discussing the English varieties that exist in the world. The study concludes by suggesting that Outer Circle Englishes need to be explicitly incorporated in the teacher education programme at university for these to be more accepted in the English classroom.

The Distribution and Spread of English Loanwords: Some Indications from Written Bangla in Articles concerned with Science, Culture, Lifestyle, and Religion.2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

English has served as a donor language of loanwords to many different languages in the world. One of these languages is Bangla. Despite the importance of the English influence on Bangla, few researchers have investigated English loanwords in Bangla and even fewer have looked at the distribution of them between different categories such as science, lifestyle, culture, and religion. The purpose of the present study was to establish whether the distribution of English loanwords varied between these categories, how these results would relate to findings in other languages, and what this would tell us about word-formation processes in relation to English loanwords in general. Articles related to these categories were found and analyzed to find English loanwords which were at the same time counted manually and compared with the overall amount of words in each article. The results showed a clear tendency for a higher number of English loanwords in texts concerned with the topic of science, followed by; lifestyle, culture; and lastly religion; the differences were statistically significant. These findings were also similar to what has been shown in other languages. Future research should aim to include a larger, more balanced sample, but also having a more reliable method of collecting and analyzing texts and words.

Responsibility and the Media: A critical discourse analysis of climate change representations in the U.S and Nigerian news outlets2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Scientists have reached a consensus that human activities have contributed to global climate change, yet its outcomes affect societies disproportionately. Often the least responsible countries are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. This study will therefore be looking at vulnerable countries and highest carbon emitters, by engaging in a critical discourse analysis of climate change representations in the U.S and Nigerian news. Through the analysis of the Nigerian floods in 2018 and the U.S Campfires in 2018, functions of systemic functional linguistics and critical discourse analysis such as frame analysis, transitivity analysis, deemphasis/emphasis were used as tools to investigate how responsibility was discursively constructed in the media. The analyses show that the media coverage of Nigerian floods present frames of ‘government accountability’ and ‘victim accountability’ while the U.S Camp Fires media coverage present frames of ‘heroism’ and ‘victims’. No explicit mention of climate change is present in the texts and responsibility is discursively constructed away from climate change and human activities as a responsible agent and towards the actual fires themselves, government, or victims.

Negation in Germanic languages: A micro-typological study on negation2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Traditionally, typological classifications have been done in a macro-typological perspective; that is,they have been based on balanced world-wide samples of languages, which often avoid includingclosely related languages, since these are supposed to act alike with respect to their typologicalfeatures and structures. However, attention has recently been drawn to the idea that even closelyrelated languages, as well as dialects within languages, may differ on their typological features. Theintention of this thesis is to give an overview of and study how the Germanic languages differ fromeach other in regards to their negative word orders and negation strategies. Mainly their negativeadverbs (English equivalent not), but also their negative indefinite quantifiers, are analyzed in mainclauses, subordinate clauses, and (negative) imperative structures. The focus lies on the standardlanguage varieties, but some of their non-standard varieties are included, in order to be able to give amore detailed description of the variation within the family. The expected result that the ratherhomogeneous described area of the Germanic languages will turn out to be much more complex, withrespect to negation aspects, is confirmed. The results show that the standard language varieties behavedifferently than the non-standard ones, which are less "rare" cross-linguistically. In addition, the nonstandardNorth-Germanic varieties show that multiple negation occurs in the North-Germanic branch, which is traditionally claimed to not occur.

    Abstract [es]

Language policies and early bilingual education in Sweden: An ethnographic study of two bilingual preschools in Stockholm2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This research aims to shed light on language policies and early bilingual education in Sweden. It highlights the main language policies developed by Sweden while framing them within a European perspective, thus comparing the “national” language policies to the “international” language policies, stressing differences and similarities. More specifically, it analyzes the language policies and guidelines related to bilingual education created by the Council of Europe and afterwards applies the same procedure to the Swedish ones. Furthermore, this study investigates the language practices of children and teachers in two bilingual/multilingual settings. In order to do this, the research was framed as a sociolinguistic ethnography and was carried out using observations, interviews and audio-recordings in order to achieve triangulation wherever possible. Interview and observational data were analyzed thematically while interactional data was analyzed to establish the purposes for which different languages were used by participants. In conclusion, this study might give an idea of how appropriate the Swedish language policies are while stressing the need to revise and implement those policies that might affect the success of early bilingual/multilingual preschool education in Sweden.

Making the Old New Again: A Corpus Analysis of Semantic Change in Contemporary American English Slang2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study used a combination of historical and contemporary corpora to investigate semantic change within the contemporary American English slang words swag, flex, and swole. This study involved two parts. First, it analyzed each slang term’s earlier morphological form through collocate and contextual analysis within the Corpus of Historical American English (COHA). Second, it examined each slang term’s contemporary use in context within the News on the Web (NOW) corpus. After a comparison of the conclusions drawn from each analysis, it was found that the word swag underwent the process of semantic change known as amelioration and the words flex and swole experienced metaphorization.

La interpretación del significado de locuciones verbales en español: Estrategias de aprendientes y hablantes nativos para describir el sentido figurado al Pensar en Voz Alta2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

Colour is essential to our perception of the world, regardless of the country we live in or what language we speak. Colour terms are part of all languages.

Describing change of colour may be a way of underlining an emotion. Telling that a person turned green with envy, gives a more powerful picture of the person’s envy than just writing that he or she became very envious.

Sometimes the change of colour is just a metaphor - no actual change of colour has occurred. In other cases describing a change of colour may be meant literally.

Change of colour may be expressed in different ways in different languages. They may be expressed by using an auxiliary verb, describing the change, preceding the colour, e.g. become green or turn red. They may also be expressed using a specific verb that expresses the change of colour, such as redden or whiten.

This essay compares constructions describing changes to the colours red and green in Russian and Swedish. It focuses on the following issues: Which are the most common causes of colour change in the two languages? How prevalent is the use of colour change as a metaphor? Which are the expressions most commonly used expressing change of colour to red and to green? How common are constructions using an auxiliary verb as opposed to specific verbs describing colour change?

The analysis is corpus based, drawing on material partly from the Russian Nacional’nyj korpus russkogo jazyka, partly from the Swedish corpus Språkbanken. A difficulty is that the material in the two corpuses differs considerably as to age as well as to style. Thus, only conclusions based on very clear differences between the languages can be considered reliable.

    Some conclusions:

    • Metaphorical use of colour change occurs in both languages and is common particularly for change of colour to green.

    • The frequency of the causes for colour change differs considerably between the languages, regardless of whether the change of colour is meant metaphorically or literally.

    • In Swedish, practically the only cause for metaphoric change of colour to green is envy. This metaphor is present also in Russian, but is far less frequent. Instead, different expressions of anger, to a varying degree, dominate.

    • In the Russian material, time is the dominating cause of literal change of colour to green. The Swedish material, holding only few cases of literal change of colour to green, shows no example of this.

    • In the Swedish material, the dominating cause of change of colour to red is shame. This is also an important cause in the Russian material. However, here different expressions of joy, dominate.

The use of specific verbs describing colour change is significantly more common in Russian than in Swedish.

    Abstract [en]

Tigrinya is one of the Afro Semitic languages, traditionally classified as North Ethiopic, and spoken in Eritrean and Northern Ethiopia. In this work Tigrinya negation particles were investigated and analyzed. with the main aim to emphasise distribution of negation particles in different word classes in the language. It is designed to provide some analysis of how the North Afro Semitic languages are related, with some descriptions about how they have different distribution of negation forms. Some linguistic ideas in using Tigrinya negation by comparing it with its sister languages are also given.

Adverbet ngorə i betydelsen 'inte än' i dialekten sammartinese i södra Italien: En analys av dess användningar och individuella variation i sammartinese samt i närliggande dialekter2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Processing Dutch: A study on the acquisition of Dutch as a second language using Processability Theory as a framework2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

An ongoing debate within the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) discusses the possibility of universal developmental stages in the interlanguage of second language learners. Processability Theory (PT) is one of the theories that enhances this way of thinking about second language acquisition. The belief is that learners go through the same stages of development when learning a new language. An ongoing process in PT is the construction of these developmental stages for individual languages, but today there is still much work needed in this area. The purpose of this thesis is to construct the developmental stages for Dutch, based on an error analysis of second language learners’ interlanguage. The data was collected from Swedish students learning Dutch on a university level. The students were interviewed once per month, and three times in total, so that no developments in their interlanguage could be missed. The data is processed according to the emergence criterion, resulting in developmental tables of the learners’ progress. The result of these interviews provides for the outline on how one acquires Dutch, and together with a grammatical analysis of Dutch word order procedures and morphology, a developmental hierarchy for the acquisition of Dutch according to PT is constructed.

    Abstract [sv]

General L2 Proficiency and Spoken Word Recognition2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

This essay concerns the ability of advanced L2 users of English to recognise spoken words in a noisy environment. Its main objective is to see whether there exists any correlation between the proficiency level of an advanced user of L2 English and his/her ability to recognise spoken words. Twenty students in the English Department at Stockholm University were given several proficiency tests as well as a test of spoken word recognition. The spoken words were embedded in a “cocktail party” background noise. The central research question is whether proficiency levels (as reflected in the tests) are related to levels of ability to recognise words in a noisy input situation.

A secondary goal of this essay is to identify the phonemes that seemed most difficult for the informants to recognise in a noisy environment.

The results indicate that general L2 proficiency, as measured by three types of tests (vocabulary knowledge, written word recognition, reading comprehension) has no impact on a subjects’ ability to recognise spoken words in a noisy environment. The results also indicate that some phonemes were more difficult to recognise than others. Furthermore, the analysis of mishearings indicate that in doublets (words where both the noun forms and the verb forms were given), the words with first syllable stress (nouns) were correctly recognised considerably more often than words with second syllable stress (verbs). For words with only a single form the stress pattern did not seem to influence recognition. Several lines of future research are discussed.

Investigating the tonal contours of Sawi nouns: A contrastive analysis with established tonal features of Palula2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study explores whether or not tonal contours are a contrastive feature in Sawi nouns. It aims to provide evidence towards the claim that Sawi has lost contrastive tones and provide a basis from which further research into how the use of qualitative vowel differences may have replaced the pitch accent system still found in Sawi’s closest relative, Palula. This was done through the analysis of a corpus of Sawi nouns with a computer program that visually stylizes prosodic and tonal features in audio samples of the language. This corpus was then analyzed for trends within itself as well as compared to known trends in the Palula lexicon. The findings support the original hypothesis that Sawi nouns do not have contrastive pitch accents, as found in Palula; and that further research may reveal a regular or semi-regular tonal contour accentuating the final mora of each noun.

Codeswitching from L1 to L2 in group work by teenagers: An investigation of codeswitching from Swedish to English in student group-work discussions by learners of English in 9th grade at a upper primary school in Sweden2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper was to perform an investigation into instances of codeswitching by Swedish teenagers from L1 Swedish to L2 English in student group-work discussions. The specific focus of the investigation were the instances of codeswitching which were performed as a demonstration of personal expression on the part of the speaker. It was the goal of this research to analyse such examples of codeswitching and attempt to create an understanding of the underlying mechanisms that drive this type of communication.  The study took place at an upper primary school in Sweden.  Data was collected through the recording of two group discussions. The group discussions were framed and recorded as part of an English language lesson in grade 9. Four student interviews were also performed. The results of the data analysis indicated that Swedish teenagers codeswitch from Swedish to English in group discussions quite frequently. The students expressed that they codeswitch to English in this manner as way of communicating with each other in a way that is generally agreed to be “cool” and “fun”. They also do this to display their own proficiency in the language. Proficiency in English is perceived to be a desirable attribute. The conclusion of the study is that codeswitching of this type is an important part of this group’s language use in terms of how the social relationships are expressed and maintained. A secondary result of this behaviour is that it appears to be a positive driver of oral English language skills.

Modal Verb + as well: A Construction Grammar study2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Modal + as well (henceforth referred to as MAW) is a form that can have a noncompositional meaning depending on the modal verb. If the modal verb is might, may, can, or could, it is possible that it will be a construction. All of the scrutinized instances of might and may in MAW observed in the Corpus of Contemporary American English have been constructions. Can and could occurred less frequently in the MAW constructions. The MAW construction associates with the semantics of ‘best option’. This sense does not mean that the construction only attaches to good things but rather that the MAW is used to present that which is the apparently least bad option for the particular circumstance. The investigation into MAW also considers which subject pronouns come before the construction. The different pronouns are not a part of the MAW constructions itself but are an important part of the context that influences the interpretation of the construction. The pronoun is also important because it is mainly the relation between the pronoun and the addressee that determines which contextual meaning the MAW construction can take. The meaning variants of the construction seem to be excuses, suggestions and claims.

Metaforbruk i gymnasieelevers texter i svenska som andraspråk: Från spela roll till skräckslagande2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Motivation in L2 and L3 learning: A comparative study of Finnish students learning English and Swedish as compulsory school subjects1990Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Motivation has long been recognised to function as a crucial part in language learning. Nonetheless, the linguistic complexity of simultaneous L2 learning as well as L3 learning has been largely overlooked in motivational studies and only a few researchers, such as Dörnyei and his associates (2005) as well as Henry (2011; 2012; 2014), have conducted studies concerning the issue and point to the need of more research in the field. The current study investigates motivation in simultaneous foreign language learning, focusing on Finnish high school students learning English and Swedish as compulsory subjects in school. The study compares the students’ motivation to learn the two target languages and attempts to find explanation to the appearing differences by analysing the collected data in terms of Dörnyei’s (2005) Motivational Self System, which includes the concepts of ideal L2 self, ought-to L2 self and L2 learning experience. Twelve 14-year-old high school students in Åbo area participated in completing a questionnaire and five of these students were asked to take part in a focus group interview. The questionnaire and interview results show generally a more positive attitude towards learning English in all the investigated motivational dimensions in comparison to Swedish. Ought-to L2 self and ideal L2 self were found to be important elements forming the students’ motivation to learn English, ideal L2 self being the stronger motivator of the possible selves. However, the students’ motivation to learn Swedish is merely dominated by ought-to self, and it appears the main factors causing the students’ demotivation to learn Swedish is the difficulty of the language, learning experience as well as lack of instrumentality and contact with the language. Unlike shown in previous research, the current study found the dominating ideal-self in English and ought-to self in Swedish to cause highly similar levels of learning success in the languages, despite the difference in strength of the possible selves in English and Swedish.

Beröring i interaktion mellan föräldrar och deras barn2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Use of psy discourse on the popular vernacular: A recontextualization analysis on TikTok2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Social media has become a safe place where users can discuss taboo topics, like mental health, with the purpose of creating awareness and de-stigmatization. However, online discussions on mental health have caused psy discourse to seep into the popular vernacular. This study aims to analyze how psychiatric terms (specifically bipolar, narcissist, sociopath, OCD and trauma) are used by TikTok users, the meanings they attribute to them and the contexts in which they occur. I aim to look at how recontextualization has affected the meaning, comparing it to the clinical sense. I also look at the social implications that these online interactions have and how social media communication practices work. A corpus was created from transcriptions of 150 TikTok videos that were analyzed with AntConc, looking for collocates and patterns in context. These videos were classified into three general categories: educational, evaluative and humorous. The results were then compared to the definitions found in the DSM-V (American Psychiatric Association, 2013) to find changes in meaning. The interpretation of the results is informed by Critical Discourse Analysis and tied to concepts like representation, identity and affiliation.

Results show that almost half of the users apply these terms in a clinical sense while the other half do not. The context in which they are used varies among each of the terms. Although all of them are stigmatized concepts, each tends to show different levels of recontextualization and transformation of sense. Some are used in positive contexts like educating the public on the condition and sharing their own experiences to create visibility. However, others still carry connotations of stigmatization and negativity.

The findings reflect the complexity of social media communication. Posts on social media act as tools to construct our identity, affiliate to certain groups, broadcast and learn new (mis)information. This study informs us on how recontextualization and social media users play a role in the transformation of meanings. It complements previous research on psychiatric terms use in social media, providing information about the interactions occurring on TikTok and contributing to document change on language use.

Syntaktisk struktur i svenskt teckenspråk hos hörande andraspråksinlärare: – En analys av ordföljd, bisatser och användning av verb2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In response to the covid-19 pandemic in 2020, the Swedish National Agency for Education and the Public Health Agency of Sweden recommended that all upper secondary schools in Sweden would temporarily transition to distance education. A report was simultaneously ordered by the Swedish School Inspectorate, which would monitor the effects the distance education had on Swedish upper secondary schools. The report found that many areas of the Swedish upper secondary school had suffered during the period of distance education. The purpose for this essay is to examine how the findings of the report corresponds with the experiences in German teaching at upper secondary level, one year after the publishing of the original report. An interview with a teacher of German was conducted, who had spent the last three semesters teaching German in an upper secondary school, which mostly was spent via online teaching due to the recommendations from the Public Health Agency. The findings suggest that most of the negative consequences highlighted by the report coincide with the experiences in teaching of German as a foreign language, although many of the findings also apply to other parts of the schoolsystem as well. The findings, furthermore, seem to indicate that certain aspects of what was highlighted by the report could potentially affect foreign language teaching especially, as language learning depends on interactional factors to be successful. The gradual return of present learning has also created a situation of hybrid learning, which only seem to affect certain parts of the school system, German teaching included. To combat similar situations with negative effects in the future, this essay aims to discuss ways in which to actively work towards a teaching approach that is affected to a lesser extent than have been monitored during the covid-19 pandemic. Ways in which to improve future teaching include actively fostering good motivational practices and adapting to working methods which combine the positives of both present and online teaching practices.

Surf and turf, builder’s mug och Jaffa cakes: Översättningsstrategier vid svensk undertextning av kulturspecifika referenser i anglofona matlagningsprogram2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Kulturspecifika referenser definieras som ”any reference to a cultural entity which, due to its distance from the target culture, is characterized by a sufficient degree of opacity for the target reader to constitute a problem” (Mailhac i Ranzato 2015:54) och kan vara sådant t.ex. som måttenheter (pint), märken (Tabasco) och maträtter (surf and turf).
