Exploring opportunities for social learning in community response to natural hazards: A case study of Morpeth Flood Action Group, northwest of England2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Social learning has had a growing recognition in the environmental debate and is argued to increase resilience. However, recent literature has spurred a discussion on shortcomings of the use of the concept. This study aims to add more empirical understanding to social learning by using a case study of flood hazards in Morpeth, England, as a critical lens. Moreover, there has been a call for more community involvement in disaster mitigation as well as increased understanding of long-term learning dimension. Therefore this research has focused on a self-organised community group, Morpeth Flood Action Group, triggered by a community response to a flood hazard. The findings, based on qualitative interviews and participatory observations, suggest various elements of, and opportunities for social learning in the organisational viability and the everyday operation of the studied community group. The findings indicate that social network over scales, institutional development by a bottom up processes and long-term possibilities for learning are instrumental. This study has identified enabling key factors for local learning process to happen and to be sustainable, which can be instructive for future development for local response capacity in disaster risk reduction and resilience. The study concludes that this type of spontaneously, “real-world” approach to social learning for can be a suitable study object for future empirical research.

Reeling in private governance approaches for sustainable fisheries: A study of Fishery Improvement Projects2022Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In response to the global fisheries crisis new governance models have been developed. In this thesis, I study one such model, Fishery Improvement Projects (FIPs), that have increased in numbers and importance globally, yet received little scientific attention. Alongside seafood certifications schemes, FIPs have been developed to meet the growing demand for sustainable seafood. By employing a multi-stakeholder approach, these projects aim to use the power of the private sector to improve fishery management and fishing practices. However, processes within these projects, and how they function as an instrument of change to improve fisheries, have been particularly understudied. This thesis explores the potential benefits and challenges of FIPs as a private governance approach for achieving sustainable fisheries. Paper I presents the first global systematic description of FIPs governance processes by examining reported actions, the actors involved, and their achievements. It reveals that FIPs have influenced both governmental policy (e.g., through management plans and new governmental management bodies) and industry-led practices (e.g., traceability programs and gear changes). It also demonstrates that FIPs include a diversity of actors, although fishers and retailers are relatively absent in FIP actions. The paper proposes that FIP actions and outputs can be categorized as either complementary or reinforcing of state regulations. Paper II contributes with an in-depth case study of the blue swimming crab FIP in Indonesia. By using the lens of institutional entrepreneurship, the study provides a historical analysis of the value chain from village fishers in Indonesia to importers in the US. It describes the entrepreneurship behind the FIP’s establishment and its institutional interventions, as well as addresses why these have been unsuccessful in changing behaviours of fishers and traders to increase the ecological sustainability. The paper expands on the theoretical understanding of institutional entrepreneurship. Paper III presents an overview of how fishers participate in FIPs based on data from FIP implementers world-wide. Fishers are mostly involved in data collection efforts and less involved in developing FIP workplans and objectives indicating that they are not involved in the early development process of the FIP. The lack of overall benefits for fishers together with limited capacity and skills within projects were identified as the main barriers to have meaningful fishers' participation, flagging some critical challenges for the FIP model. Finally, Paper IV uses a literature review of the social embeddedness theory within fisheries literature to explore how social context influences economic actions in fisheries trade. The paper emphasizes the importance of how social identity (e.g., ethnicity) shapes market access and how the level of (dis)trust between actors impacts trade strategies. It discusses the implications of these findings for research and implementation of FIPs and other market-based interventions. Together, these four papers contribute with novel empirically grounded understandings of FIPs, which is relevant for the growing literature around private governance as well as for the global community of practice within the sustainable seafood movement. These papers provide important insights into the ongoing debate about effective governance approaches for improving the sustainability of fisheries for both people and ecosystems.

The Functional Importance of Herbivores: Tying the knot between fish biomass, parrotfish feeding and benthic structure on Kenyan coral reefs2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Herbivory is considered a key ecosystem process on coral reefs as it enhances reefs resilience by preventing shifts to macroalgal states. In trying to understand mechanisms and consequences of such shifts, research have taken on a variety of approaches, from the effect of declining habitat condition on (herbivorous) fish communities to the roles of specific herbivore functional groups and size classes therein. This study aimed to incorporate these different foci by investigating the interplay between roving herbivore biomass (surgeonfish and parrotfish), parrotfish functional impact and a coral-macroalgal gradient, represented by four Kenyan reefs. The feeding function (here, the amount and type of algae removed) was measured at the parrotfish community level and an in-depth assessment was made of two target species (Chlorurus sordidus and Scarus psittacus) to determine the effect of benthic condition and fish size. Both herbivore biomass and the parrotfish community functional impact declined over the coral-macroalgal gradient, and the transition was found at herbivore biomass of ~300 kg ha-1. Interestingly, benthos appeared to only have limited effect on the function of individual parrotfish, whereas size was highly important as large fish were found to be functionally superior. It was the discussed how herbivore biomass and level of herbivory can be both cause and consequence of benthic community structure, and whether biomass can serve as a measure of function. Lastly, the question is raised on how to balance the trade-off between fish for food or fish for function, discussing management implications that can allow for fishing without undermining function provided.

”Sverige har blivit attackerat”: - En kritisk diskursanalys av svensk nyhetsmedias porträttering av (terror)dåden i Trollhättan och på Drottninggatan2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Resilience offers escape from trapped thinking on poverty alleviation2017In: Science Advances, E-ISSN 2375-2548, Vol. 3, no 5, article id 1603043Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The poverty trap concept strongly influences current research and policy on poverty alleviation. Financial or technological inputs intended to push the rural poor out of a poverty trap have had many successes but have also failed unexpectedly with serious ecological and social consequences that can reinforce poverty. Resilience thinking can help to (i) understand how these failures emerge from the complex relationships between humans and the ecosystems on which they depend and (ii) navigate diverse poverty alleviation strategies, such as transformative change, that may instead be required. First, we review commonly observed or assumed social-ecological relationships in rural development contexts, focusing on economic, biophysical, and cultural aspects of poverty. Second, we develop a classification of poverty alleviation strategies using insights from resilience research on social-ecological change. Last, we use these advances to develop stylized, multidimensional poverty trap models. The models show that (i) interventions that ignore nature and culture can reinforce poverty (particularly in agrobiodiverse landscapes), (ii) transformative change can instead open new pathways for poverty alleviation, and (iii) asset inputs may be effective in other contexts (for example, where resource degradation and poverty are tightly interlinked). Our model-based approach and insights offer a systematic way to review the consequences of the causal mechanisms that characterize poverty traps in different agricultural contexts and identify appropriate strategies for rural development challenges.

Participación y empoderamiento: Experiencias del Movimiento de Trabajadores Desocupados de Lanús2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

Marital status, education, and income in relation to the risk of esophaegal and gastric cancer by histological type and site2016In: Cancer, ISSN 0008-543X, E-ISSN 1097-0142, Vol. 122, no 2, p. 207-212Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    BACKGROUND

Marital status, income, and education might influence the risk of esophageal and gastric cancer, but the literature is limited. A large study addressing subtypes of these tumors was used to clarify these associations.

    METHODS

A nationwide, Swedish population–based cohort study from 1991 to 2010 included individuals who were 50 years old or older. Data on exposures, covariates, and outcomes were obtained from well-maintained registers. Four esophagogastric tumor subtypes were analyzed in combination and separately: esophageal adenocarcinoma, esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, cardia adenocarcinoma, and noncardia gastric adenocarcinoma. Poisson regression was used to estimate incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Analyses were stratified by sex and adjusted for confounders.

    RESULTS

Among 4,734,227 participants (60,634,007 person-years), 24,095 developed esophageal or gastric cancer. In comparison with individuals in a long marriage, increased IRRs were found among participants who were in a shorter marriage or were never married, remarried, divorced, or widowed. These associations were indicated for each tumor subtype but were generally stronger for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. Higher education and income were associated with decreased IRRs in a seemingly dose-response manner and similarly for each subtype. In comparison with the completion of only primary school, higher tertiary education rendered an IRR of 0.64 (95% CI, 0.60-0.69) for men and an IRR of 0.68 (95% CI, 0.61-0.75) for women. Comparing participants in the highest and lowest income brackets (highest 20% vs lowest 20%) revealed an IRR of 0.74 (95% CI, 0.70-0.79) for men and an IRR of 0.83 (95% CI, 0.76-0.91) for women.

    CONCLUSIONS

Divorce, widowhood, living alone, low educational attainment, and low income increase the risk of each subtype of esophageal and gastric cancer. These associations require attention when high-risk individuals are being identified.

Do Surveys Overestimate or Underestimate Socioeconomic Differences in Voter Turnout? Evidence from Administrative Registers2019In: Public Opinion Quarterly, ISSN 0033-362X, E-ISSN 1537-5331, Vol. 83, no 2, p. 363-385Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Surveys generally overestimate the overall level of voter turnout in elections due to both the misreporting of voting and nonresponse. It is sometimes argued that socioeconomic differences in turnout are exaggerated in surveys because social desirability has a more pronounced effect on eligible voters in more advantaged socioeconomic positions. However, the contribution of nonresponse bias has not been taken into consideration in these assessments. Using a register-linked survey with information on the education, occupational social class, income, and voting in the 2015 Finnish parliamentary elections of both respondents and nonrespondents, this study shows that nonresponse bias leads to not only a larger overestimation of the overall level of turnout than social desirability, but also an underestimation of educational, social class, and income-related differences in the propensity to vote. Socioeconomic differences in the probability of voting in register-based data were at least two-thirds larger than differences obtained when using standard survey techniques. This finding implies that socioeconomic inequality in electoral participation is a more pressing social problem than previous evidence might indicate.

    Abstract [sv]

Place, community education, gender and child mortality in Northeast India2006In: Population Space and Place, Vol. 12, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the relevance of socio-cultural and environmental factors in explaining child mortality in Northeast India, considered to be the most inaccessible region in the country. Using data from the Indian National Family Health Survey, we provide evidence that lack of hygiene in the household and poor women's engagement in physically demanding agriculture based work contributes to higher risk of child mortality. Unlike in other parts of India, female children have an edge over boys in childhood survival and living with paternal grandmother tends to lower the risk of child death in the first five years of life. Community education is found as the dominant factor outside the household to have a significant effect on child mortality.

Iranian identity construction in the Swedish labor market2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to bring about better understanding of the view that the individual Iranians have on the matter of discrimination in the labor market and the effect that it may have on their individual identity construction in their new home country Sweden. The study is built around three main themes: discrimination, integration and identity. Previous research shows that Iranians in Sweden successfully integrate in their new home country despite having severe difficulties in entering the new labor market. In an attempt to explain this contradiction some patterns have been recognized in how Iranian immigrants experience and explain their situations post-migration. As the focus of this study is on the individual’s identity construction life course interviews were used to collect the data. This method enables focusing on individual life events and life trajectories while simultaneously seeking explanations and understanding of social change and social phenomena. The results show that Iranians in Sweden take great personal responsibility over their own integration to the labor market and do therefore not recognize discrimination. Their understanding of discrimination lets many forms of discrimination pass unnoticed and their way of seeing their own situation in the labor market does appear to have a dominantly positive effect on their identity construction.

Between Interculturalism and Ethnocentrism: Local Government and Indigenous Movement in Otavalo-Ecuador2009In: 45th Conference of the Society for Latin American Studies/SLAS, University of Leeds, 26-27 March, 2009., 2009Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The canton of Otavalo in the Ecuadorian Sierra has been a stronghold and intellectual cradle of the Ecuadorian indigenous movement. In the year 2000 Mario Conejo Maldonado, who represented the indigenous political movement Pachakutik, was elected as the first indigenous mayor of Otavalo. His administration has enjoyed recognition for its popular participation formula and intercultural project, integrating mestizos and indigenous citizens. In the context of local state reform challenges and the inclusion and recognition of indigenous citizens in the Ecuadorian state model this study approaches a local government led by an indigenous mayor with an intercultural banner. However, the project of ethnic integration in Otavalo has not evolved without complications and conflicts. Social and political divisions in the indigenous population have been reflected since before Conejo was ever elected. Ethnically based tensions in the local indigenous movement have been manifested throughout the period and in 2006 Conejo left Pachakutik and created a new political movement – Minga Intercultural-. The author argues that the rupture in the Otavalo indigenous movement (and local government) can be traced to the intercultural dilemma and difficulties associated with an ethnically defined political movement. Similarly, aspects of the so called “Correa effect” on the indigenous movement at the local level will be approached, since the Otavalo mayor has joined President Rafael Correa’s PAIS movement before the local elections of 2009.

    Abstract [es]

Suicide of the Elephants?: Venezuelan Decentralization between Partyarchy and Chavismo2004Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

On the 3rd of December 1989, Venezuelans went to the polls for the first time to directly elect their local and regional political leaders. A process of government decentralization was initiated with direct elections of municipal mayors and regional state governors. Since 1958, the political system had been dominated by two political parties, the social democratic AD (Acción Democrática) and Christian democratic COPEI, both strongly centralized parties. The system of strongly dominant political parties is often referred to as partyarchy, with penetration of organized social and political activities. Notwithstanding, the AD-COPEI partyarchy experienced a relatively rapid process of undermining from 1989, losing control over important mayordomes, governorships and municipal councils. This book deals with the transformations of the Venezuelan political party system in the context of the decentralization process. During the principal study period (1989-2004), non-traditional political parties like the socialist MAS (Movimiento Al Socialismo) and Causa R (Causa Radical) have emerged, and triumphed in the elections of mayors and governors, thus threatening the previous almost hegemonic position of AD and COPEI. The municipal, regional and national elections of 1998 and 2000 changed the political panorama even more. Several entirely new political parties have emerged. The MVR (Movimiento V República) party of current President Hugo Chávez presents the most dramatic and rapid rise in this context. But similarly, other parties associated with decentralization have achieved increased political influence. Theoretically, a combination of actors’ rational choice, and, more process-structural approaches, particularly the use of the framework of political opportunity structures, helps to theoretically understand the political transformations related to decentralization and its implications for the party system. The study demonstrates that the party system and political decentralization are intimately connected and dependent of each other. This study describes and analyzes the “encounter” between the Venezuelan party system and the decentralization reform.

Venezuelan Leftist Parties in the Era of Hugo Chávez2008In: Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies, E-ISSN 1654-0204, no 3, p. 131-142Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this article the roots, development and the current situation of the political movement around Venezuelan President Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías (Chavismo) are analyzed through historical reconsiderations regarding the main Leftist political parties of the country. Many scholars have tended to neglect important historical connections between, for instance, Chavismo and Venezuelan historical Leftist parties. Conflict and change in and around Chavismo principally from the early 1990´s onwards are factors to be explored in a context of Venezuelan democracy and leftist political actors, both those associated with Chávez and those actors of the present and recent political opposition. Likewise, the personalistic character of Chavismo and its possible implications for the party system and individual parties are considered.

Venezuelan Politics and Society in times of Chavismo: Política y sociedad en la Venezuela del Chavismo2006Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez Frías is probably the most controversial among the Latin American political leaders of the recent decade(s). The former coup-leader (or military rebel, depending on the interpretation by the analyst), who was democratically elected President of the Republic in 1998, is likewise a forefront figure of the current wave of Leftist transformations on the continent. This first edition of the Stockholm Review of Latin American Studies is dedicated to the topic of Venezuelan politics and society in times of Chavismo. A rather broad range of researchers from three continents have contributed with distinct points of departure and scopes of focus, with the first three articles in English and the five subsequent ones in Spanish. In the first, Daniel Hellinger employs the concept of tercermundismo to approach Venezuelan politics and society in the context of rising and developing Chavismo. Aspects of social and political inclusion and exclusion are analytically revised, as well as other relevant factors behind the popularity (and the rejection) of Chávez. Thereafter, Angel Alvarez presents a series of analytical arguments regarding social cleavages and political polarization in the context of the break-down of the ancient regime and its consequences for democracy. Rickard Lalander then emphasizes the destiny of Venezuelan decentralization since Hugo Chávez came to power. José Vicente Carrasquero addresses certain aspects of participatory democracy and social and political inclusion and exclusion respectively, and offers a balance of accounts of the first seven years of the Chávez government. José Antonio Rivas Leone contributes with an historical analysis of the crises and process of de-institutionalization of the Venezuelan party system, considering both internal factors, as the exhaustion of the traditional parties, and external, like the decentralization process since 1989. In their qualitative study, Friedrich Welsch and Gabriel Reyes approach the possible social, class and ethnical differences between the supporters and the opponents of the Chávez movement, also taking into consideration citizens auto-classified as independent. The study by Carlos Blanco constitutes a critical analysis of whether the regime as officially declared is to be considered revolutionary, or, as the author argues, rather a type of neo-authoritarianism. Likewise, both the behaviour of the government and the political opposition are reviewed by Blanco, as well as Venezuela’s relationship with the United States during the Chávez government. Finally, in the contribution presented by Oscar Reyes, the main focus is the concept of 21st Century Socialism, which in recent years has been used by analysts and by Chávez himself as an umbrella term for the present Venezuelan government.

    Abstract [en]

The indigenous movement in Ecuador has combined social mobilization with political institutionalization. The organic relation between the social movement CONAIE and the political party (or movement) Pachakutik has been successful, but also complicated, giving rise to internal conflicts and fragmentation. In this study the relations between Pachakutik and CONAIE are analyzed at the local level in Otavalo and Cotacachi. The authors argue for the importance to analyze the organizational structures locally, since the indigenous movements has been strongest at this level. In Otavalo the ethnic tensions have been clearly manifested through rupture of the mayor, Mario Conejo who left Pachakutik and created a new political movement – Minga Intercultural-. The case of Cotacachi is likewise particular since an alliance is established between the mayor Auki Tituaña and the peasant movement, UNORCAC (with links to the Socialist Party). Drawing on an analytical framework of collective action and decentralization the authors argue that it is impossible to draw an exact line between what is the social and the political movement.

¿Proceso social o actores políticos?: Reflexiones sobre Pachakutik y CONAIE desde Imbabura2008In: Aportes Andinos, no 21Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Suicide of the Elephants?: Venezuelan Decentralization between Partyarchy and Chavismo2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)

The municipal, regional and national elections of 1998 and 2000 changed the political panorama even more. Several entirely new political parties have emerged. The MVR (Movimiento V República) party of current President Hugo Chávez presents the most dramatic and rapid rise in this context. But similarly, other parties associated with decentralization have achieved increased political influence.Theoretically, a combination of actors rational choice, and, more process-structural approaches, helps to theoretically understand the political transformations related to decentralization and its implications for the party system. Amplifying actions for food system transformation: insights from the Stockholm region2022In: Sustainability Science, ISSN 1862-4065, E-ISSN 1862-4057, Vol. 17, no 6, p. 2379-2395Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Food is essential to people and is one of the main ways in which people are connected to the world’s ecosystems. However, food systems often cause ecosystem degradation and produce ill-health, which has generated increasing calls to transform food systems to be more sustainable. The Swedish food system is currently undergoing substantial change. A varied set of local actors have created alternative sustainability initiatives that enact new ways of doing, thinking, and organizing. These actors can increase the transformative impact of their initiatives through multiple actions and a variety of amplification processes. We analyzed the actions adopted by 29 food initiatives active in the Stockholm region using information available online. We conducted 11 interviews to better understand the amplification processes of speeding up (i.e., accelerating impact), scaling up (i.e., influencing higher institutional levels), and scaling deep (i.e., changing values and mind-sets). Our results indicated that the initiatives mainly seek to stabilize and grow their impact while changing the awareness, values, and mind-sets of people concerning the food they consume (scaling deep). However, these approaches raise new questions about whether these actions subvert or reinforce current unsustainable and inequitable system dynamics. We suggest there are distinct steps that local and regional governments could take to support these local actors via collaborations with coordinated forms of initiatives, and fostering changes at the municipality level, but these steps require ongoing, adaptive approaches given the highly complex nature of transformative change and the risks of reinforcing current system dynamics.

Processes of Proliferation: Impact Beyond Scaling in Sharing and Collaborative Economies2022In: Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction, E-ISSN 2573-0142, Vol. 6, no GROUP, p. 1-22, article id 41Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

While scalability and growth are key concerns for mainstream, venture-backed digital platforms, local and location-oriented collaborative economies are diverse in their approaches to evolving and achieving social change. Their aims and tactics differ when it comes to broadening their activities across contexts, spreading their concept, or seeking to make a bigger impact by promoting co-operation. This paper draws on three pairs of European, community-centred initiatives which reveal alternative views on scale, growth, and impact. We argue thatproliferation - a concept that emphasises how something gets started and then travels in perhaps unexpected ways - offers an alternative toscaling, which we understand as the use of digital networks in a monocultural way to capture an ever-growing number of participants. Considering proliferation is, thus, a way to reorient and enrich discussions on impact, ambitions, modes of organising, and the use of collaborative technologies. In illustrating how these aspects relate inprocesses of proliferation, we offer CSCW an alternative vision of technology use and development that can help us make sense of the impact of sharing and collaborative economies, and design socio-technical infrastructures to support their flourishing.

Obstacles for Changes within the (Swedish) Police Force: Professional Motivations, Homosociality and Ordering Practices2013In: Journal of Scandinavian Studies in Criminology and Crime Prevention, ISSN 1404-3858, E-ISSN 1651-2340, Vol. 14, no 1, p. 43-61Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article discusses how professional motivations and homosociality within the Swedish police (training programme) becomes an obstacle to both a changed police norm and diversity within the police force. This issue is discussed on the basis of two studies; one focused on the professional motivations of police students; the other focused on the issue of norms and normation within the police training programme. The norm regarding how a police officer is ought to be is viewed as a manifestation of ordering practices as a form of continuous, ongoing normation processes that emphasises practical, physically demanding and violent working conditions focused on combating crime. This produces powerful conceptions of the types of body that are suitable for the profession, a normative (male) body. A body that effects those bodies that are assumed to contribute to diversity in a police force dominated of white, Swedish, heterosexual males. This together moulds a culture founded on the conceptions of physically demanding and action-focused work that promote a muscle culture that emphasis the work as practical, rather than moving towards an intellectual and reflective approach to police work.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract

Three dimensions of the relationship between gender role attitudes and fertility intentions2021In: Genus, ISSN 0016-6987, Vol. 77, article id 15Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The relationship between gender role attitudes and fertility intentions is highly debated among social scientists. We emphasize the need for a multidimensional theoretical and empirical approach to extend the two-step behavioral gender revolution approach to a three-step attitudinal gender revolution approach distinguishing between gender roles in the public sphere, mothers’ role in the family, and fathers’ role in the family. Using the Generations and Gender Survey of eight European countries, we demonstrate the usefulness of such an approach. Gender equal attitudes related to the public sphere are more widespread than those concerning mothers’ or fathers’ roles in the family. Our results show that the association between gender role attitudes and fertility intentions varies—in terms of significance and magnitude—according to the dimension considered (gender roles in the public sphere, mothers’ and fathers’ role in the family), gender, parity, and country. We conclude that without a clear concept of and empirical distinction between the various elements of the gender role attitudes/fertility nexus, scientific investigations will continue to send conflicting messages.

The role of initial ecosystem state for future resilience and ecosystem outcome2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Loss of marine ecosystem resilience can lead to abrupt changes in ecosystem structure, so called regime shifts, which affects dynamics and function of the ecosystem. Loss of ecosystem provisioning services can have a substantial impact on human well-being. Reversing an ecosystem back to its original state after a regime shift can be difficult, costly and impossible. Management strategies applied after a regime shift can have a different future outcome than applied before the regime shift. In the face of climate change and intensification of nutrient loading and fishing, there is a need to understand how to manage marine ecosystems in order to prevent future regime shifts and to understand the outcome from applied management strategies. The Central Baltic Sea is a heterogeneous water body with hydrographical differences from the south to the north, and with Gotland basin suffering with hypoxic conditions and summer algal blooms and it provides an interesting opportunity to explore ecosystem response on a smaller spatial scale. Here I combine ecosystem modeling and future scenarios to explore past ecosystem dynamics and by testing future management strategies from two initial states explore the ecosystem outcome and resilience. The present study have successfully constructed an Ecopath with Ecosim food web model of Gotland basin from 1980 to 2009 where the results shows that past, i.e., 1980-2009 dynamics were in line with the changes occurring on a larger scale, the Central Baltic Sea. Results from future projections show that the level of nutrients has a large impact on the future outcome of the ecosystem and the influence initial ecosystem states have for future outcome is found to be low.

Finally, I discuss drivers and processes behind the past changes and future projections in Gotland food web, bringing insights to the role of initial ecosystem state for future ecosystem-based management.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Sweden has an active and growing culture of feminist comic book artists that use comedy as a mean of disseminating political ideas and critic. In this essay I do a reparative reading of Sara Granér’s comic book All I Want for Christmas is planekonomi in order to find out if it advocates alternative orders and/or ways of expression. By exploring what the comic book does to me as a reader and how, using the term ”skev” – a hybrid of queer that examines normativity not strictly tied to sexuality – and gulesque theory – a mix of feminism, cuteness, the grotesque and riot grrrl –, I show that the comic book, through the use of comedy, works as a trojan My Little Pony, reclaiming the girly franchise, while challenging several so-called dichotomies, such as: femininity/masculinity; youth/adult; high art/kitsch. I conclude that the comic book contain feminist figures of resistance, and that it creates affects and nourishment that can be used as a means to imagine a feminist other.

Integrating sustainability with business strategy – the Swedish chemical industry2008Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to investigate perceptions of sustainability in relation to business

strategy within the Swedish chemical industry. To this end, a survey was

distributed with the assistance of industry organization Plast- och Kemiföretagen

to companies that are part of the Responsible Care® program.

A second purpose of the study is to explore critical factors when implementing an

integration of sustainability with business strategy. To do this as well as dig deeper

into a couple of questions raised in the survey, a qualitative study was carried out

at Akzo Nobel business unit Pulp and Paper Chemicals (operating under the brand

name of Eka Chemicals). Semi-structured interviews were performed with seven

company representatives from different organizational levels, to explore critical

factors identified in a literary study.

From the survey, it could be concluded that the studied companies considered

sustainability as an important issue today and with growing importance for the

future. It was also observed that sustainability is currently not an issue at the core

of business strategy, as 35% of respondent companies did not think that top

management handled issues related to sustainability. Enhanced reputation and

cost reduction/resource efficiency were seen as the primary creators of business

value when addressing sustainability. Additional top motivating forces to consider

sustainability were legislative demands and company core values.

From the literary study a model of critical factors when implementing changes in

strategy was developed. Four different aspects identified were explored in the

semi-structured interviews at Eka Chemicals: change leadership, shared vision,

sense of urgency and aligning goals. In that specific setting, the critical factors of

having a shared vision and aligning individual, organizational unit and corporate

goals were found to exist to a high degree, while the critical factor of change

leadership was only partially existent, and a sense of urgency not existent.

This chapter serves as a conclusion for the edited book on Nordic Societal Security: Convergence and Divergence, edited by Sebastian Larsson and Mark Rhinard. It draws together the book’s main findings and answers its main research question. The chapter outlines key similarities in Nordic security discourses and practices, then identifies areas of clear divergence. It then reflects upon the broader significant of both of these trends, outlining key points for consideration before setting out a three-point agenda for future research.

Introduction: Comparing and conceptualising Nordic societal security2020In: Nordic Societal Security: Convergence and Divergence / [ed] Sebastian Larsson; Mark Rhinard, Palgrave Macmillan, 2020, p. 1-21Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This introductory chapter establishes the importance of exploring the various ways that security has been conceptualised and acted upon in the Nordic region, with the goal to identify patterns of convergence and divergence. It reviews the ostensibly Nordic concept of ‘societal security’ and explains why some outside observers may assume commonalities amongst Nordic ways of thinking broadly about, and doing, security. One is the tendency to view Nordic security concepts as linked to the robust nature of the region’s social welfare systems, while another is the seemingly orchestrated way in which non-military forms of Nordic security developed after the Cold War. While these factors are certainly relevant, the chapter also charts likely lines of divergence to be investigated by the chapters in this volume. It notes varying interpretations and translations of the societal security concept, different perceptions of the threat environment, and heterogeneity in the way Nordic countries committed to international institutions and military alliances. The chapter then sketches the analytical framework of the book and introduces the contributions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Forest feminists? Performing postfeminist subjectivities in Swedish women forest owners’ collective actionIn: Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Postfeminism has received little attention within feminist geography; therefore, spatialities have been left largely unexplored in postfeminist studies. In this paper, I explore how postfeminist performances by women forest owners are articulated and maintained in relation to their collective action, paying special attention to spatiality and spatial power relations. I base my analysis on semistructured interviews with women forest owners from six separate networks for women, participant observations at network events, and an analysis of the networks’ written material. The women were reluctant to frame their separate networks as feminist and/or gender equality projects, which I argue should be understood as an expression of a postfeminist sensibility traversed by spatial power relations enacted within Swedish forestry, constituting a social and economic space associated with rurality. Feminism and gender equality were partly understood in relation to spatial power relations connected to the urban-rural dichotomy, which contributed to the articulation of individual postfeminist performances, including the use of spatial and temporal discursive moves to reject sexism and marginalisation, and consequently, the preservation of the self as emancipated while rejecting the need for feminist collective action. The analysis further unpacks how postfeminism is articulated and maintained, contributing to a broader understanding of the paradoxes of women’s collective action.

Power relations and adaptive capacity: Exploring gender relations in climate change adaptation and coping within small-scale farming in western Kenya2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 40 credits / 60 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Climate adaptation is an important and necessary response to global climate change.Numerous studies show that adaptive capacity is shaped by cultural and social determinants.Gender relations are an integral aspect of social relations in all societies, yet the literature onhow gender influences climate adaptation is limited. Women and men, with different roles, responsibilities and decision-making power have different possibilities to cope and adapt withclimate change, thus adopting a gendered approach to climate adaptation is essential toenhance our understanding of successful adaptation. The aim of the study is to explore how cultural attributes and power relations of genderinfluence adaptive capacity in relation to climate change among smallholder farmers inwestern Kenya. Furthermore this study contributes to resilience thinking by using the lens ofpost-structural feminist political ecology and the concept of gender contracts, whichhighlights the influence of power laden gender discourses and the construction andreconstruction of such contracts. The study is triangulated by the use of qualitative methodsand draws upon 12 semi-structured interviews, 4 focus group discussions and 4 expertinterviews.Gendered power relations were primarily a constraint to the adaptive capacity of women, restricting their possibilities to pursue a number of coping and adaptation strategies, which inturn affected the resilience of the household. Capacity building and farmer group formationpromoted by a Swedish NGO (ViAFP) resulted in altered power relations, renegotiated andreconstructed gender contracts which increased adaptive capacity and adaptation opportunitiesfor both men and women, although particularly for women because of their initial vulnerableposition. This study adds an understanding of the gendered dimensions of local climatechange adaptation and shows that adaptation cannot be understood separate from socialrelations. The policy implication is thus that enhancing local climate adaptation requiresconsideration of power relations and gender equality.

Operationalizing ambiguity in sustainability science: embracing the elephant in the room2023In: Sustainability Science, ISSN 1862-4065, E-ISSN 1862-4057Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Ambiguity is often recognized as an intrinsic aspect of addressing complex sustainability challenges. Nevertheless, in the practice of transdisciplinary sustainability research, ambiguity is often an ‘elephant in the room’ to be either side-stepped or reduced rather than explicitly mobilized in pursuit of solutions. These responses threaten the salience and legitimacy of sustainability science by masking the pluralism of real-world sustainability challenges and how research renders certain frames visible and invisible. Critical systems thinking (CST) emerged from the efforts of operational researchers to address theoretical and practical aspects of ambiguity. By adapting key concepts, frameworks, and lessons from CST literature and case studies, this paper aims to establish (1) an expansive conceptualization of ambiguity and (2) recommendations for operationalizing ambiguity as a valuable means of addressing sustainability challenges. We conceptualize ambiguity as an emergent feature of the simultaneous and interacting boundary processes associated with being, knowing, and intervening in complex systems, and propose Reflexive Boundary Critique (RBC) as a novel framework to help navigate these boundary processes. Our characterization of ambiguity acknowledges the boundary of a researcher’s subjective orientation and its influence on how ambiguity is exposed and mediated in research (being), characterizes knowledge as produced through the process of making boundary judgments, generating a partial, contextual, and provisional frame (knowing), and situates a researcher as part of the complexity they seek to understand, rendering any boundary process as a form of intervention that reinforces or marginalizes certain frames and, in turn, influences action (intervening). Our recommendations for sustainability scientists to operationalize ambiguity include (1) nurturing the reflexive capacities of transdisciplinary researchers to navigate persistent ambiguity (e.g., using our proposed framework of RBC), and (2) grappling with the potential for and consequences of theoretical incommensurability and discordant pluralism. Our findings can help sustainability scientists give shape to and embrace ambiguity as a fundamental part of rigorous sustainability science.

Legitimating taste in cultural fields: Generational classifications and symbolic struggles in representations of ‘natural’ wine2024In: Journal of Consumer Culture, ISSN 1469-5405, E-ISSN 1741-2900, Vol. 24, no 1, p. 120-137Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article addresses the legitimation of taste in cultural fields by examining the role of generational dynamics in the field of fine wine. In the last decade, ‘natural’ wine has become an increasingly influential category in the fine wine field. The article explores how legitimating media institutions in this field represent natural wine, particularly as regards to the symbolic properties of cultural taste. The empirical material consists of articles published in two leading US wine magazines, VinePair and Wine Spectator. The analysis shows that natural wine was represented as a contested category whose aesthetic qualities were only partially legitimated. Moreover, generational and age-coded categories were deployed to construct oppositions between natural wines and other fine wines, as well as between their respective proponents. The aesthetic characteristics of natural wine were associated with emerging forms of cultural capital that partly challenged established aesthetic standards in the fine wine field connected to traditional highbrow cultural capital. Contestations over natural wine are therefore indicative of symbolic struggles over cultural taste in the fine wine field. In conclusion, the article contributes to research in cultural fields by analysing the relationship between generational classifications and contestations over aesthetic standards in the legitimation of taste.

Den neutrala digitala röstassistenten?: en genusvetenskaplig studie om digitala röstassistenter och könsroller2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Begärets dynamik: Om sexuellt begär och könsidentiteter ur ett transperspektiv2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
