    Abstract [en]

This study treats the topic of smallpox prevention in Sweden during the nascent phase of vaccination between 1798–1805. The aim is to examine how Swedish physicians sought to establish trustworthiness for a new medical treatment as well as to analyse the relation between professional physicians and the unlicensed actors involved in the practice, i.e. the clergy and their assistants. The source material consists of pamphlets, articles in daily papers and annual reports written by Swedish physicians. By drawing upon theories on boundary-work and epistemic authority, this study has found that several boundaries were drawn within the medical space by the physicians who strived to retain the elements of the practice that were considered the most crucial, while delegating others. More importantly, the study has found that the physicians attempted to engage the clergy in the dissemination of knowledge due to their influence over the public. According to the physicians, the clergy were able to establish a credibility for the vaccine which could induce the population to undergo the treatment without coercion or laws made by the government.

    Abstract [fr]

Att fostra journalister: Journalistutbildningens formering i Sverige 1944-19702011Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The thesis analyses the interaction between various interests in Swedish society when the existing apprenticeship system for the journalism profession was to be replaced by a formal journalism education programme. The press organisations had a difficult time agreeing on a programme, and the issue was discussed for over 50 years. The profession was seen as a talent, an aptitude that some people had, and there was opposition to formal education. The first part analyses discussions about journalism education in a post-war context, both in Sweden and internationally. Part two considers extensive investigatory processes in Sweden, in which the structure of journalism programmes was arrived at through negotiations. The third part studies the development of and discussions about the newly founded national journalism schools.

The thesis demonstrates that journalism education was often presented as a solution to other perceived problems than the press needing more professionally trained labour. Journalism education was proposed as a solution to problems associated with commercialisation, sensational journalism, politicised journalism and war propaganda. The question of influencing the shaping of opinion both in Sweden and internationally was linked to journalism education to the extent that education was seen as a method of affecting the way the “free” press worked. For the same reason, the education of journalists was sometimes considered dangerous, that journalism students were streamlined in a separate education programme based on homogeneous values, which could be a threat to the freedom of expression.

Using Bourdieu, the difficult relationship between the journalistic field and the academic field on education is interpreted as a struggle between two forms of capital over which kind of knowledge is to be valued. On a higher level, the struggle between academe and the press was formulated as a battle of symbolic royalty over what values were to be regarded as true in public discourse.

    Abstract [sv]

Morbi Mentales: Linnaeus’  Classification of  Mental Illness2010In: LINN S’O’S NEWS. Newsletter of the Linnean Society of New South Wales, no 135, p. 2-6Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Parallel to the classification of the vegetal world, Carl Linnaeus developed in pamphlets and seminars a system of medical diagnosis that comprised both somatic and mental illness. The Systema naturæ was complemented by Systema morborum, the system of diseases, which he presented in an unpublished lecture series at Uppsala University. In his nosological system, using symptoms as criteria of classification, he arranged different “species” of diseases in classes, orders, and genera in the same manner as he classified plants. With characteristic methodological zeal and attention to detail, and with a wealth of observations and case studies, Linnaeus studied mental disorders.

Perspektiv på individualismen i väst1986In: Värld och vetande, ISSN 0346-4873, Vol. 35, no 1, p. 8-17Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

The Cauldron of Concupiscence2013In: Pangs of Love and Longing: Configurations of Desire in Premodern Literature / [ed] Anders Cullhed, Carin Franzén, Anders Hallengren and Mats Malm, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2013, 1, p. 26-40Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper demonstrates the essential role played by pagan myth in the medieval and early Renaissance understanding of love. The fact that Christian ideas of love and desire had overshadowed the philosophical conceptions of eros and epithumía by no means dethroned the ancient god with the bow, whose poisonous arrows never lost their sting. In late Roman and medieval love poetry, the conception of love as a toxic syndrome survived and lived on, in love potions, philtres, which helplessly bind the lovers together, as in the great works of the high and late Middle Ages—the legends of Tristan and Iseult or the Roman de la Rose. The Spanish Baroque poet Francisco de Quevedo, in his Canta sola a Lisi, covets a beloved whose force of attraction is described as venenosa, identifying the amada with the sierpe, the Serpent proper, whose power is biblical and equivalent to Satan. In all similar cases, the bewitchment, the spell, the obsession, the folly or the inebriant served the purpose of exculpation and perfect innocence, guiltlessness. So too did the world of dreams, more indulgent than wakefulness, and accordingly dream visions, fantasy and dreamlike moods and atmospheres set their mark on tribulations and temptations as well as on the great poetry of love in pre-modern Christian Europe.

The code of Concord: Emerson's search for universal laws1994Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this work is to detect a pattern: the concordance of Ethics and Aesthetics, Poetics and Politics in the most influential American thinker of the nineteenth century. It is an attempt to trace a basic concept of the Emersonian transcendentalist doctrine, its development, its philosophical meaning and practical implications. Emerson’s thought is analyzed genetically in search of the generating paradigm, or the set of axioms from which his aesthetic ideas as well as his political reasoning are derived. Such a basic structure, or point of convergence, is sought in the emergence of Emerson’s idea of universal laws that repeat themselves on all levels of reality.

A general introduction is given in Part One, where the crisis in Emerson’s life is seen as representing and foreshadowing the deeper existential crisis of modern man.

In Part 2 we follow the increasingly skeptical theologian’s turn to science, where he tries to secure a safe secular foundation for ethical good and right and to solve the problem of evil.

Part 3 shows how Emerson’s conception of the laws of nature and ethics is applied in his political philosophy.

In Part 4, Emerson’s ideas of the arts are seen as corresponding to his views of nature, morality, and individuality.

Finally, in Part 5, the ancient and classical nature of Concord philosophy is brought into focus.

The book concludes with a short summary.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This master thesis studies debates on historical theory in Sweden ́s two main historical journals, Historisk tidskrift and Scandia, during the last fifty years. The study investigates discussions of epistemological questions, the purposes of historical writing, and the influence of postmodernism. The theoretical approach and methodology used is inspired by the American pragmatist philosopher Richard Rorty. In a concluding chapter Rorty’s writings are used to confront the study’s results. The purpose of this is to highlight certain problems from the investigation. It is argued that the vocabulary used by the Swedish historians is an effect of the correspondence theory of truth, and that a pragmatic approach to the study of history could help history break free from that unfortunate vocabulary.

John Locke och familjens makt över uppfostran2007In: Utbildning och demokrati, ISSN 1102 - 6472, Vol. 16, no 1, p. 53-71Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

The Ethos of History: Time and Responsibility2018Collection (editor) (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

At a time when rapidly evolving technologies, political turmoil, and the tensions inherent in multiculturalism and globalization are reshaping historical consciousness, what is the proper role for historians and their work? By way of an answer, the contributors to this volume offer up an illuminating collective meditation on the idea of ethos and its relevance for historical practice. These intellectually adventurous essays demonstrate how ethos—a term evoking a society’s “fundamental character” as well as an ethical appeal to knowledge and commitment—can serve as a conceptual lodestar for history today, not only as a narrative, but as a form of consciousness and an ethical-political orientation.

From Ingenium to Virtus: The Cultivation of Talent in Dissertations on Education at Uppsala University around 16802019In: Nordic Journal of Educational History, ISSN 2001-7766, E-ISSN 2001-9076, Vol. 6, no 1, p. 71-93Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article explores the problem of innate, natural talent vs acquired skill, knowledge, and virtue in dissertations from Uppsala University around 1680. These texts have never before been studied. It discusses questions such as: how did Swedish academics of the period conceive the relationship between ingenium (innate potential) and (acquired) virtue or knowledge? Which teaching methods did they advocate? How do the texts relate to developments in seventeenth century society? The study uses a combination of contextual analysis and a ‘history of concepts’ approach to answer these questions. The analysis reveals that the Swedish dissertations respond to contemporary debates (involving well-known authorities such as Vives, Huarte, Erasmus, and Comenius) and that they were affected by the immediate context: the growth of the early modern state and the social mobility which accompanied that growth. Education is described in Renaissance humanist terms, with a clear affinity to moral philosophical concepts such as virtue and habituation. The learning process described is analogous to the acquisition of moral virtue and education itself is to a large extent legitimated with reference to moral socialization. The educational ideas put forward balance discipline and playfulness, and represent a relatively democratic view of the distribution of human capabilities, showing a great trust in the potential of education. However, there is also a distinct stress on medical explanations of differences in individual talent.
