LOTTE LASERSTEIN PÅ MODERNA MUSEET: En utställningsanalys av kvinnligt transnationellt konstnärskap2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

In search of meaning in opera: an opera singer's approach to the dialectics of words, music & myth in opera from Monteverdi to Verdi2000Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to show that the opera singer's art is to transmit word and music into vocal action. It is assumed that opera, like all the arts, communicates myth. Of the stage arts opera is unique in that it expresses mythic metaphors through a combination of words and music.

The point of departure is the opera singer's: confronted with the text, comprising libretto and music, how can this be used to achieve a dramatic effect? Stanislavsky's theory of acting is often applied in practice, but whatever its merits for the stage, it has shortcomings for opera. More promising, it is argued, is a form of hermeneutic approach that Ricoeur calls "backward relatedness": the composer's score is relied on to contain all essential information, but further understanding may be gained by studying any human science that gives insight into how the poet expresses his life experience.

In this spirit, the first part of the thesis surveys the history of opera from Monteverdi to Verdi with a focus on how composers have handled the relation between words and music to give expression to human conflicts that are the stuff of myth. The second part comprises two chapters in which arias from each of the main periods studied are analysed with attention paid both to the libretto and the music and how these combine in vocal action that communicates myth. It is here that the fruitfulness of Ricoeur's insights are demonstrated. In a final part, the conditions for the present-day opera singer are discussed.

Performing Power: The Political Masks of King Gustav III of Sweden (1771-1792)2013Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

King Gustav III founded the Swedish National Theater and Opera, participated in the court theater as playwright, director and actor and he was rightly called the Theater King. The King’s passion for acting was perceived in the past as a psychological weakness, which won him the appellation of wimp (fjant). However, Gustav III presents a special interest as a performer of the role of an enlightened monarch according to the philosophy of the epoch of Enlightenment, particularly that of Voltaire. This research project aims at challenging the stereotyped perception of Gustav III, and presents him as a performing king who purposely used his acting ability to achieve political gain.

The theoretical foundation of this study of the King’s use of theater is described in Chapter I. The theory of playing by Johan Huizinga and the theory of theatricality of Nikolai Evreinov, from the point of view of culture and anthropology, respectively, explain how playing is the basis of human living. Yuri Lotman’s semiotic approach is applied to formulate the concept of theatrical playing meant to influence the spectators, which is at the core of the Pageants in court and in public, used by Gustav III to display his power. Finally, but most importantly, the theories of Josette Féral, Hans-Georg Gadamer and Willmar Sauter present theatrical playing as an interactive performative communication between the performer and the beholders that became the core of Royal Encounters, which were the most effective political tools of Gustav III.

The ensuing chapters are devoted to the different activities of the King related to theater, understood as the sum of interactions between the performer and the spectators that can occur within the walls of a theater or outside them. Theatricalized actions transported into life and directed to the beholders (Pageants) and the interaction between the performing King and his beholding subjects (Royal Encounters) are presented and examined. Examples of Pageants are chosen from court life, such as entertaining divertissements and amateur theater; Public Pageants were held at occasions such as the birth of a royal prince and King Gustav’s departure to the war with Russia. Among the Royal Encounters the coup d’etat in 1772 and the struggle against the nobility at the Riksdag of 1789 can be mentioned.

The conclusion establishes the concordance between the performing King and his beholding subjects leading to real achievements in politics. This investigation sheds light on the different theatrical means the King employed in crafting political tasks and choosing appropriate political masks. Gustav III was a master of acting; thus, the decisive factor in each of his theatricalized actions was not so much his art at playwriting and directing, as his ability as a performer. In addition, the King could assert his royal power by performing his own idealized social role of an enlightened monarch.

Anime in Academia: Representative Object, Media Form, and Japanese Studies2018In: Arts, E-ISSN 2076-0752, Vol. 7, no 4, article id 56Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

The transcultural consumption of Japan-derived popular media has prompted a significant amount of academic research and teaching. Instead of addressing globalization or localization as such, this article investigates the interplay of anime research and the institution of Japanese studies and recurrent methodological issues therein, in particular, related to representation and mediation, intellectual critique and affective engagement, subculture and national culture. The inclination towards objects and representation in socio-cultural as well as cinema-oriented Japanese-studies accounts of anime is first introduced and, after considering discursive implications of the name animein Japan and abroad, contrasted with media-studies approaches that put an emphasis on relations, modalities, and forms. In order to illustrate the vital role of forms, including genre, similarities between TV anime and Nordic Noir TV drama series are sketched out. Eventually, the article demonstrates that the study of anime is accomodated best by going beyond traditional polarizations between text and context, media specificity and media ecology, area and discipline.

    Abstract [en]

The characterization of manga (graphic narratives) and anime (animated film) as ‘superflat’ is usually accompanied by overlooking the materiality of their craftedness. Media-aesthetic discussions of craftedness focus on stylization, hyper-mediality, and parodic intertextuality rather than the persistence of manual craft, the role of hand drawing, and the preference for an analog look. Taking In This Corner of the World as its example, this article investigates how the story of a hand and its pictorial representation are entwined with the comics-specific employment of free-hand drawing, printed pages, and serial publication format. It arrives at the conclusion that a pragmatic orientation towards tangible proximity between past and present, characters and readers, or viewers, outweighs invitations to critically reflect on the medium of comics as such.

Manga: Medium, Kunst und Material2015Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Manga are many things: culture industry and ‘media mix’ component, instrument of ‘Cool Japan’ campaigns by the Japanese state, visual language of a global fan culture, and source of cute characters. But manga are also comics, serial graphic narratives for the most part; the related media specificity affects those representational capacities which primarily attract the interest of historians and gender-studies scholars. This volume assembles German and English-language essays in manga studies, that hark back to book chapters and conference papers for not comics-specific contexts. These essays do not employ manga as mere material for the study of culture or Japan, but rather query what aesthetic and cultural conditions as well as discourses call for consideration with respect to such employment. Manga itself takes center stage here.

Manga Storytelling: Modern Graphic Narratives, Illustrated Handscrolls (emaki), and Webtoons2021Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Art historians tend to assume a continuity between Japanese narrative painting, especially illustrated handscrolls (emaki), and contemporary graphic narratives (manga). But manga narratives relate even old stories as if they were new, using specific techniques of focalization. This shall be demonstrated through a project created for Rietberg Museum Zürich: an adaptation of the Jūnirui utaawase (Poetry Contest of the Zodiac animals) scrolls to manga and webtoon.

More Mangaesque than the Manga: "Cartooning" in the Kimetsu no Yaiba Anime2021In: Transcommunication, ISSN 2188-4986, Vol. 8, no 2, p. 171-178Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Kimetsu no yaiba has attracted attention with regard to transmediality, but it also raises awareness of media specificity. To exemplify the specific mediality of anime (as a distinct type of entertaining fiction resting on animated moving images), I take an intermedial approach and focus on the abundant use of mangaesque devices in the TV anime, or more precisely, ‘chibi instances’ heightened by mangaesque pictograms and other “visual morphemes” (Cohn). These instances interrupt the anime’s visual-stylistic as well as narrative continuity (and reception thereof), which has made them a matter of occasional discontent in popular criticism. Significantly, the manga source work does not feature as many and as spectacular mangaesque elements as the anime adaptation. While this may relate to media-mix marketing on the one hand, and the TV anime’s strongly nostalgic, if not conservative, orientation on the other hand, I foreground ‘cartooning’ as conceptualized in comics studies and animation history.

Leaning on recent discussions of Scott McCloud’s early notion of ‘cartoon’ as a graphic mode prevalent in comics (cf. Packard 2017, Wilde 2020, Molotiu 2020), I relate ‘cartooning’ in the Kimetsu no yaiba TV anime to the already mentioned ‘comicana’ (emanata, momentum lines, sweat beads, etc.), and to chibi-fication. Anime, as distinct from ‘animation made in Japan,’ is marked, among other things, by chibi, manifesting not only in exaggerated (‘super deformed’) midget characters that afford merchandise figures, but, more importantly, a midget version of one and the same character. Chibi-fication makes affective states visible, promotes characters’ fluid identity, and playfully jeopardizes diegetic coherence by way of abruptly changing registers. Found in the more openly structured TV series format rather than ‘authorial’ animated movies, and whereever anime prioritizes ‘figurative’ over ‘embodied acting’ (cf. Suan), chibi-fication presents itself as an instantiation of what Thomas Lamarre (2020) has conceptualized as “switching” — if approaching it from the perspective of aesthetic materiality, and considering 3rd and 1st narrative perspectives, seriousness and comicality, cuteness and grotesqueness, visible ‘picture object’ and invisible referential meaning (cf. Wilde 2020), and also generically masculine and feminine modes.

    Abstract [en]

This chapter describes the design and the contextual backgrounds of the societies of settlement and the immigrant groups involved in the ICSEY project. The cultural principle requires the elaboration of some features of the societies of settlement, and of the immigrant groups that have come to settle in them, and an account of the nature of their intercultural relationships. Although the percentage of immigrants residing in a society is one indicator of cultural diversity, other indicators are available in the literature. Australia has a high level of immigration, with 24.6% of the population of nearly 20 million not born in the country. Israel is a country of high immigration, with 37.4% of its population of almost 6 million having been born abroad. Israel is thus high on actual diversity. Two thirds of the US population believe that rates of immigration should be reduced.

Färg som brott: Om Le Corbusiers ambivalenta relation till färg2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Damn Pinkerton, and all such as he!: Om orientalism i Madame Butterfly 2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sebastian Beverloo: "Damn Pinkerton, and all such as he!

    Abstract

This meticulous study investigates the intrinsic relationship between museum architecture and their symbolic representation of power dynamics and societal constructs. Delving into three distinctive case studies—Nationalmuseum, Moderna Museet, and the Museum of Mediterranean—located centrally in Stockholm, the research critically analyzes their historical trajectories and architectural evolutions. Nationalmuseum, rooted in royal collections since the 16th century, has undergone substantial renovations blending modernization while preserving historical integrity. Moderna Museet, founded in 1958 as a bastion for contemporary art, stands as a testament to simplicity and adaptability in museum architecture. Conversely, the Museum of Mediterranean, housed in a former bank palace, confronts exhibition challenges within its unique and protected setting.

Moreover, this study critically examines museums within the framework of “Space and Place”, delineating how architecture and museums act as conduits for symbolizing power structures in society. Comparative analysis of Nationalmuseum and Moderna Museet's architecture underscores their influence on visitor experiences. It elucidates the pivotal role museums play as integral components of urban landscapes, transforming cityscapes and contributing significantly to economic growth. The findings highlight the significance of museum architecture as a conduit for preserving cultural heritage, shaping visitor experiences, and reflecting societal ideals. By analyzing the architectural narratives of the three Museums, this study offers valuable insights into the complex interrelationship between architecture, history, and cultural representation within museum spaces.

Curating contemporary art, the city and the flâneur: A walk through Bruges and its Triennial2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Discovering the city of Bruges through the lens of its Triennial is the starting point to research the potential for contemporary art to influence one’s way of experiencing the city. Taking the case study of a still not so renowned large-scale event like the Bruges Triennial, this thesis investigates the background of this recurring event, how it started, the evolution of its curatorial process and its socio-political challenges being set, every three years, in the context of a Unesco-protected site. After providing the historical background of the city of Bruges, it evidences the ways in which the Bruges Triennial gradually adopted a flâneuristic approach to curating art and in turn encourages flânerie. This sensible way of progressing in the city, mostly via walking and based on the bodily experience, is allowing the refining of a curatorial practice concerned with generating a sensorial reading of the city and results in a curatorial experiment entitled La Dérive

Functionalism, the overall concept of the period, has perhaps been interpreted in terms of ideological concepts, interpreted as "democratic" and as a progressive dividing line between the past and the future. I examine how housing and suburban planning in Sweden in the mid-20th century was affected by how housing and town planning related to that period's clear class boundaries and well-defined gender roles. I analyse both rhetoric and physical planning. Whether the architect had explicit ambitions to achieve spatial differentiation of socio-economic categories, how suburban planners dealt with their historical inheritance and the principles about categorisation and spatial separation. I also analyse how ideas of class, gender and spatial differentiation of family members affected the organisation and design of rooms in the housing planning of the mid-20th century. The general conclusion of the thesis as a whole is that ideas about class, sex and familial hierarchy were reflected in functionalist housing and interior decoration. The planned suburbs in Stockholm involved explicit strategies for differentiating population categories in different suburbs. The planned suburbs, which were regarded as paradigmatic cases for the suburban planning of the period, involved explicit strategies for differentiating population categories in different suburbs, a strategy that was concretised in physical suburban planning. Terraced housing in one area, småstugor in another, blocks of flats in a third, detached houses in a fourth. Sociological arguments justified this type of suburban planning. The emotional affinity between neighbours was considered to be better if the neighbours belong to the same socio economic category. Planned homes, which were regarded as paradigmatic cases for the housing planning of this period, involved explicit strategies for differentiating family members into different rooms, distinguishing between private and public rooms within the sphere of the home, a strategy that was concretised in physical housing planning. I analyse how the magazine's editorial content contributed to producing a middle-class housing ideal. A central aspect of modern housing planning and the debate in around 1930 was the launch of the home as an essentially private sphere. The editorial team behind the magazine Hem i Sverige launched the home as a reaction against the idea of the home as essentially a private sphere, with a clear spatial hierarchy and division between different family members, between private and public spheres. I examined the participation of the Nordiska Kompaniet department store in the 1930 Stockholm exhibition. As an influential commercial actor, the store's management had a strategy of combining consumption with both benefit and enjoyment, dreams, pastimes and goal-oriented purchases. The starting point for Nordiska Kompaniet's interior decoration approach was the organisation and content of the upper middle-class home. The drawing rooms, the dining room, the serving area, the homes with clear dividing lines between private and public sphere. Family structures and familial hierarchy were emphasised on the basis of the upper middle-class family's tradition.

Bilden av "orienten" : Exotism i 1800-talets svenska visuella kultur:  2011 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation examines the relation between discourses on Americanisation and the instituting processes of the film industry in Sweden during the 1920s. As the title indicates, Americanism, the threat of the Russian Revolution, as well as gender politics, are crucial for an understanding of the post-World War I period. A number of Swedish films from the mid-20s are analysed, and can be considered as negotiating (or exploiting) contemporary tendencies, by using jazz music and dance, fashion and hairstyles, cars and aeroplanes etc. These films are seen in relation to the "instituting" of a film industry in Sweden (a professional industry with its own ideas, codes and regulations, its own professional ethos).

The first chapter studies phenomena regarded as "American", the "double identity" of America as the modern society par excellence on the one hand, and as a place of resistance against the decadence of post-World War I Europe on the other. The second chapter analyzes parliamentary debates concerning potential regulations of the film industry, a boycott action against American films, organized by leftist organisations in 1927 (a reaction to the Sacco-Vanzetti affair), and screenings of banned films (initiated as a protest against the banning of BATTLESHIP POTËMKIN). The third chapter deals with aspects of Americanisation concerning the spectator's way of life, especially discourses on the "feminisation" of men, with special emphasis on the "Swedish Valentino", Enrique Rivero. In the fourth chapter, a cinema café in Stockholm 1924-26 becomes a site of convergence for the instituting processes of the film industry. The restrictive actions of the film industry not only show the guiding ideas of the industry, but the incommensurable instituting processes of the industry and the audience. This chapter also discusses connections between cinema and radio, as two different forms of public spheres.

As a conclusion, analyses of two Swedish-German co-productions and a Swedish-British one show how the particular competence of the film industry and the film critics can be seen as an important tool for understanding the film industry and the film audience in Sweden in the 1920s.

Att återskapa för att förnya och behålla: Remedieringsprocesser i samarbetet mellan Jeff Koons och Louis Vuitton2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

När Ikaros syster mötte sin publik: En skulpturs liv i offentligheten2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]
