    Abstract [en]

The national Nordic language communitiues converge with regard to loan words and attitudes towards them. However, the great majority of the Nordic citizens do not adhere to a well reasoned language ideology. The loan words do not represent a key topic in a language policy perspective, and the attitudes towards them may very well differ, but the loan words discourse may be used by language planners to strengthen language awareness. Language planners and language politicians in the Nordic countries should the strengthen the Internordic similarities in language policies, facilitate the every day increasing Internordic communication and be keen on the formation of public opinion.

Språkvård och språkpolitik: Svenska språknämndens forskningskonferens i Saltsjöbaden 20082010Conference proceedings (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Rethinking egocentric speech: Towards a new hypothesis2007Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

"Egocentric speech" has been an important notion in the development of language and thought since Piaget (1923) published his book Le langage et la pensée chez l'enfant (Eng. The Language and Thought of the Child), and Vygotsky (1934) published his book Myshlenie i rech (Eng. Thought and Language). Their hypotheses about the development of thought and language have provided the theoretical basis for scholarly work during the last 80 years. However, their hypotheses about egocentric speech have seldom been questioned. In this book, the author will question their hypotheses using the same material that in her own research has led her to reorganise her thinking about egocentric speech: data from a blind child. The source material that informs the book is a longitudinal case study of a blind child that extended over eight years of time. In order to closely investigate egocentric speech in this book, data from only two video recordings will be analysed from three perspectives: Piaget, Vygotsky, and Bakhtin-Voloshinov. Coming from these analyses, finally, the author presents a new hypothesis on egocentric speech and its developmental significance for inner speech or thought.

Proceedings from the Second International Interdisciplinary Conference on Perspectives and Limits of Dialogism in Mikhail Bakhtin, 3-5 June, 20092010Conference proceedings (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

(Preface) This conference focused on the core of Bakhtin’s theory, which concerns dialogue and dialogicality. The conference themes reflected his notion that the “I” and the “self”, the “you” and the “other” are embedded in each other so that each affects the other and as a whole they create a centrifugal force around which communication and life circle. The choice of the two-faced Janus figure as the symbol of the conference reflects the inward and outward aspects of communication’s inherent dialogue and dialogicality. As an ancient Roman god of beginnings and doorways, of the rising and setting sun, looking in opposite directions, Janus has been associated with polarities, that is, seeing different and contrasting aspects and characteristics. As a metaphor it describes Bakhtin’s view on dialogues and dialogicality within or between “selves” and “others”. As a metaphorical symbol it captured the intent, purpose and outcome of the conference as reflected in this collection of papers.

Sociala kategoriseringar i samspel: Hur kön, etnicitet och generation konstitueras i ungdomars samtal2008Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of the thesis is to show how gender, ethnicity and generation membership categories are constituted in talk-in-interaction. The main material comprises seven video recordings of multi-participant conversations among school pupils, aged 16 to 19.

An important theoretical term is intersectionality, i.e. the interplay between different social categories. The tools of analysis are mainly derived from conversation analysis and discursive psychology. Identity is seen as a dynamic phenomenon and I analyse the identities the participants themselves make relevant during the course of the conversations.

The investigation, aided by membership categorisation analysis, is carried out into how social categories are negotiated and used in establishing identity. In the analyses, social categories in particular are used in order to constitute identities by the participants’ creating contrasts between in-group, we, and out-group, them. Category-bound activities are used to constitute social categories. The participants also use more specific resources for talk-in-interaction – for example, active voicing and extreme case formulations – to establish or negotiate social categories. Interactional strategies and tools are used in resistance to avoid being attributed membership in a certain category, and partly consist of various ways of renegotiating the implication of belonging to a certain category. Thus, generalising notions about social groups become more nuanced and the adolescents avoid being categorised as passive victims of cultural notions. Gender, ethnicity and generation membership are furthermore constituted through storytelling.

To sum up, the above linguistic resources are used first and foremost for three different types of discursive work during the group conversations. First, the adolescents argue that they are unique and independent and therefore not dependent on cultural expectations. Secondly, they place themselves in relation to the categories by their enacting themselves as normal in various ways. Thirdly, the adolescents establish a positive self image by modifying or renegotiating the non-desirable activities associated with the categories.

The results show how the categories have situational relevance and are dealt with locally, and invoke normative expectations as to how members of social groups ought to behave.
