    Abstract [en]

Active labour market policies and programs (ALMPs) have over the lastdecades been established as main instruments to promote the transitionfrom welfare to work. In this article we study strategies employed bySwedish municipalities to help recipients ending spells of socialassistance take-up. By using a combination of quantitative andqualitative data we try to identify which approaches stand out as moresuccessful than others with respect to social assistance duration. Wehave formed pairs of municipalities similar in important respects, butwith different social assistance exit rates as predicted by a statisticalmodel. Then we conducted case studies in the selected municipalities’social assistance units, gathering information on how work is carried outand organized. Information was collected by semi-structured interviewswith department managers and front-line social workers. In theinterviews we identified various elements of practice that emerged asrelevant, suggesting that shorter spells follow from activation with afocus on human resource development, programmes targeted at youngadults, well-functioning collaboration, and use of sanctions or an overallapproach characterized by systemized efforts.

Socialtjänsten i blickfånget: organisation, resurser och insatser: Exempel från arbete med barn och ungdom, försörjningsstöd, missbruk2008Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

R&D units in Swedish social services: From local integration to regional collaboration.

For a period of over thirty years, the emergence of R&D units serving locally based Swedish social services has been considered an important ingredient in the evolvement of more professional and knowledge-based social services. It has also been regarded as a vital component for increasing practice orientation in social work research, both inside and outside the universities. In this article we describe and analyse the development of these units, with respect to their pro-liferation, organizational features and how they are valued by representatives of local social servi-ces. Our data show that almost every municipality in Sweden is, in one way or another, served by an R&D unit. These units, however, display a considerable variation with respect to basic resour-ces, activity and organizational framework. Data enabled the identification of four basic catego-ries that, more or less, represent different phases in the evolvement of R&D activities. At one end, representing the early stages, there are units integrated with and exclusively serving single municipalities. At the other end there are R&D units organized within regional associa-tions, serving multiple municipalities and in general established in recent years. In between, there are two categories of R&D units formed in direct collaboration between a limited number of municipalities – one category formally connected to academia, another with less systematic con-tacts with university-based research. In general, development over time has resulted in a dilution of resources and an increasing distance between practice and R&D activities. Originally, the units were established by the initiatives of the municipalities and expected to respond to research needs emanating from practice. The regional associations have to a considerable extent been initiated and funded by earmarked state grants with the intention to implement evidence-based practice.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about needs assessors within public elder care. The method is a quantitative vignette study. The aim of the study is to find out whether there is an existing consensus among the needs assessors when a relative to a client with reduced cognitive functions wants to make an application even though the client does not want to. We also wanted to find out whether there are any underlying circumstances which have influence on the needs assessors’ reactions to this specific situation. We used a questionnaire which consisted of four vignettes that illustrated a meeting between a needs assessor, a client and a relative to the client. The vignettes was complemented with questions that made it possible to find underlying circumstances that determine whether the needs assessors do accept the application from the clients relative. The result shows that professional experience and education is significant for whether the needs assessors choose to accept the application or not. It is also clear that there are variations depending on which town district the needs assessors work in. In some town district the needs assessors act with great similarity while there are huge differences in other town districts.

Idrottens och föräldraengagemangets betydelse för ungdomar sett ur ett ungdomsperspektiv2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In 2006 there was a change in LMA (1994:37) that clarified the division of responsibility be-tween the Migration Board and the municipalities, concerning unaccompanied children. The social services should now be utmost responsible for the housing and care of these children, to assure that they gain the same standards and rights as all other children. The aim of this essay has been to examine how the division of responsibility has influenced the work of the social services and how they interpret their responsibility for the unaccompanied children. How do the social services investigate and make decisions concerning these children? Do these chil-dren have the same rights as other children? To answer these questions a legal study was made, followed by qualitative research interviews with four social services that receive unac-companied children. The study was made from a legal sociologist perspective, which involves analyzing the results from the interviews with the legal results, together with earlier research on unaccompanied children. The results show that the division of responsibility still is indis-tinct and that the investigations concerning these children often are brief and simplified. In two of the interviewed municipalities the view was that unaccompanied children did not have the right to efforts according to SoL (2001:453), which in practice means that the unaccom-panied children are discriminated.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this undergraduate thesis was to explore how the welfare officers at palliative units in Stockholm respond to the patients’ thoughts and experiences during the last phase of life, as well as exploring their picture of the patients experiences. The research questions of the study were:

    ▪ How do the welfare officers relate to the patients’ experience of their death? ▪ In what way do the welfare officers respond to the dying patient and his or her experiences?

    ▪ What knowledge/experience do the welfare officers have and what knowledge/experience do they consider is needed in their profession?

To answer the research questions a qualitative method was used where five welfare officers in three different palliative units were interviewed. The empirical material was analysed through meaning concentration and are presented using exact quotations. It was discovered that the patients experiences cannot be generalized. However, common feelings are those of anxiety, fear and hope, which the welfare officers deal with through methods of counselling, i.e. they listen, ask questions and accommodate. The study revealed that the welfare officers viewed life experience, in different areas, as the most important aspect in order to cope with their work. The result of the study was analysed hermeneutically and phenomenologically. The theoretical framework used in the analysis was experience psychology and counselling as a method.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine and increase the knowledge about the way young, newly graduated social workers view their professional role considering their age and professional experience, how they experience the relation to their clients and colleagues and how these experiences all together affect the way the young social workers handle their professional role. Seven social workers in the ages between 23 and 25, who graduated from Socialhögskolan, Stockholm University, in January 2007, where interviewed. They also answered a questionnaire covering the similar questions as the interview. Little research had previously been made in this particular area, why the triangulation of methods was helpful in analyzing the results, with data coming from two different resources. To analyze the data a multidimensional theory was used, containing coping theory, an experiential perspective, Antonovskys theory a sense of coherence, cognitive theory and role theory. In summary, the results showed that young newly graduated social workers experienced expectations both coming from them selves and their surroundings. Finding meaning in their work helped the respondents to handle stress. The relation to their clients and colleagues and the expectations all together participated in the development of their professional role.

Seven social workers in the ages between 23 and 25, who graduated from Socialhögskolan, Stockholm University, in January 2007, where interviewed. They also answered a questionnaire covering the similar questions as the interview. Little research had previously been made in this particular area, why the triangulation of methods was helpful in analyzing the results, with ata coming from two different resources.

    Abstract [en]

Title: Consequences of diversion – a qualitative interview study regarding illicit

    buprenorphine use.

In year 1999 buprenorphine was introduced in Sweden and is used in treatment for opioid

dependence. An issue concerning substitution treatment programmes is the occurrence of

diversion and the following illegal sails of buprenorphine on a black market. The aim of this

study was to explore how people who have used illicitly obtained buprenorphine describes

such abuse. The study was conducted using qualitative method, where a total of five

individuals were interviewed about past experiences of having used illicitly acquired

buprenorphine. The findings indicate that polydrug use and intake by injection or through the

nose are common amongst illicit users of buprenorphine. Buprenorphine was described as a

possible substance of abuse. Moreover, it is discussed whether availability and attitudes

concerning buprenorphine as a cleaner and/or safer substance than other drugs can contribute

to increased abuse of opiates through buprenorphine amongst drug users who have not

previously been in contact with opiates. The authors argue that further research is needed to

explore the extent of diversion from domestic substitution treatment programs, and to widen

the understanding of how buprenorphine function as a drug of abuse.

The purpose of this essay is to contribute to an extensive understanding of former criminals and addicts. These people are facing several difficulties and possibilities during childhood, adolescence, the active period, the turning-point and life after the turning-point and we have examined what they might consist of.

In this survey we have applied a qualitative method and collected our basis from interviews with former criminals and addicts. Criminality and addiction is a complex problem. There are many different factors which contribute to develop this. The most differential factors are; insecure childhood, low self-esteem and wrong kind of friends. We have discovered that it is a long process filled with difficulties which leads to weary of the lifestyle and ultimately to a turning-point (maturing out). Further we found the importance of a non criminal network connected to the turning-point and the life after that.

Dental healthcare utilisation among young adults who were in societal out-of-home care as children: A Swedish National Cohort Study2018Inngår i: International Journal of Social Welfare, ISSN 1369-6866, E-ISSN 1468-2397, Vol. 27, nr 4, s. 325-336Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We used Swedish national registers to analyse dental health care among young adults with childhood experience of out-of-home care (OHC), in Cox regression analyses. All 1.7 million Swedish residents born in 1980-1994 were included, of whom 4% had been in OHC. The population was followed up in the Dental Health Register from age 20 to 29, during the period 2009-2014. We found that persons with short or long OHC experience made emergency dental care visits more often than their majority-population peers: 17-23% versus 9-10%, (adjusted Hazard ratios [HR:s] 1.60-2.02); they more often had tooth extractions, 9-12% versus 3% (HR:s 2.33-3.03); but less regularly visited a dentist for planned check-ups, 61-77% versus 80-87% (HR:s 0.76-0.78). Since dental health in young adulthood reflects dental health and dental care in childhood, the findings of this study call for improved preventive dental health care for children in OHC.

School performance in primary school and psychosocial problems in young adulthood among care leavers from long term foster care2011Inngår i: Children and youth services review, ISSN 0190-7409, E-ISSN 1873-7765, Vol. 33, nr 12, s. 2489-2494Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We used data from Swedish national registers for ten entire birth year cohorts (1972–1981) to examine psychosocial outcomes in young adulthood for youth that left long term foster care after age 17, comparing them with majority population peers, national adoptees and peers who had received in-home interventions before age 13. The population was followed in the registers from age 16 to 2005. Data were analyzed in Cox regression models.

Youth who left long term foster care had six-to eleven fold sex and birth year adjusted excess risks for suicide attempts, substance abuse and serious criminality from age 20, and for public welfare dependency at age 25. Overrisks were considerably lower for the in-home intervention group and the national adoptees. Adjusting results for poor school performance in the final year in primary school (ages 15–16) reduced overrisks by 38–52% for care leavers from long term foster care.

Irrespective of issues of causality, poor school performance seems to be a major risk factor for future psychosocial problems among youth who age out of long term foster care. The results suggest that promoting foster children's school performance should be given high priority by agencies.

    Abstract [en]

Men's violence against women is a serious violation of human rights. Women are far more

likely to experience violent acts or abuse by someone close to them rather than by strangers.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a complex problem and victims are often in need of support

by social services as well as by other professionals. The aim of this study is to examine how

social service employees perceive the cooperation with other professionals within the area of

IPV. The study is based on six qualitative interviews with 10 social service employees,

working with IPV, from a selection of districts and municipalities within Stockholm County.

Our results were analyzed by using Axelsson and Bihari Axelsson’s (2013) theories of

cooperation. The results show that cooperation is seen as a highly valued and inevitable part

of social work within the area of IPV and the responsibility for managing IPV cases are often

left to the social service employees to be handled alone. Meanwhile, the social service

employees describe insufficient time and not enough staff as evident restrictions for

successful cooperation with other professionals. In conclusion, IPV needs to be prioritized on

all levels within the organization to improve the possibilities for cooperation.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to explore transsexuals’ identity formation and experiences related to cross-sex hormone treatment, as well as to become absorbed in the narrative approach. To be able to participate in transsexuals’ identity formation, life stories were well suited as a theoretical approach. Life stories can be seen as socially situated actions according to Mishler, where individuals’ identity formation can be seen as both identity performances and identity claims. These narratives are seen as identity performances, where we construct and perform our identities. The stories are viewed as co-constructed between the respondent and the co-constructors in a relational context, where the interviewers are seen as visible subjects. The results showed that hormone treatment, contributing especially growth of male beard, as an important factor for the respondent in passing as biological male in heterosexual contexts. The respondent’s identity expressions also showed that his identity claims and identity performances as male varied depending on relational and social contexts. The findings in the empirical data also showed that gender roles and gender stereotypes, played an important part in what identity claims and identity performances the respondent chose to portrait.

    Abstract [en]

In the following article the author asks 480 Swedish respondents where they would go to eat well, and which places they would avoid in the same pursuit. The results reveal a Swedish mental foodscape, a sort of collective imaginary geography of food which is shared by the respondents. The Mediterranean region together with South-east Asia and Japan appear as favourite destinations for the respondents, while the US stands out as a destination that Swedes would avoid to eat well. Finally the author argues that the way that the Swedish respondents make sense of food and place can be reduced to a small number of binary opposites, most importantly that between culture and nature.

The impact of new intimate relationships in later life on social and filial relationships2012Inngår i: Book of Abstracts, International Sociological Association , 2012, s. 65-65Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Lots of prior social gerontological research has focused on filial relations in informal care as well as the impact of widowhood on social relationships in later life. In this paper we instead ask how a new intimate relationship in later life effect relationships with children, relatives and friends. In particular we focus on the effects that a new intimate partner in later life has on filial, social and care obligations. To answer these questions, qualitative interviews were conducted with a strategical sample of 28 Swedes, 63–91 years, who had established a new intimate relationship after the age of 60 (or who are dating). We found that the respondents describe changes over their life-time in what we conceptualize as the ‘relationship chain’ – a hierarchy in social and care responsibilities – where the new partner in established relations steps in at the very front of the chain. This is positively perceived by the informants, who recurrently describe their partners as a resource for their own autonomy as well as that of their children, relatives and friends.

    Abstract [en]

This article investigates how mainstream social theories of trust can help us understand how trust in food is produced and maintained in modern and late or postmodern societies. In the first part of the article three theoretical bases for trust in food are identified and discussed – emotional, habitual and reflexive trust. Special focus is given to habitual trust and four different bases for habitual trust – community, rational organisation, policy and systems of knowledge – are explored and their importance for trust in food is discussed. In the second part of the article the author discusses how these bases come together in producing trust in food in traditional, modern and late or postmodern societies respectively. Finally he argues that certification schemes can be perceived of as a technique for producing trust in food particularly well suited for late modern or postmodern societies.

What it Means to "Eat Well" in France and Sweden2010Inngår i: Food and Foodways, ISSN 0740-9710, E-ISSN 1542-3484, Vol. 18, nr 4, s. 209-232Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Which collective ideas do consumers in France and Sweden use to think about what it means to eat well? What are the most important differences between the countries and how can they be understood? To answer the above questions, this study uses open-ended survey questions from Sweden and France together with in-depth qualitative focus group interviews from both countries. The five most common ideas from each country were identified, resulting in a list of six central ideas: a balanced diet; pleasure from taste; pleasure from conviviality; regular meals; cooked food; and natural and pure products. Two of these ideas are more or less unique to only one culture—conviviality to the French and regular meals to the Swedes—but differences are also notable within each idea. Finally, the author argues that the question of what it means to eat well belongs to two different “worlds” in the two countries—a domestic world in France and an industrial world in Sweden. This belonging explains most of the differences found in the data.

Where is food 'good to think'?: Rationalities of food and place in Sweden and France2013Inngår i: Social Science Information, ISSN 0539-0184, E-ISSN 1461-7412, Vol. 52, nr 1, s. 159-178Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Where is food 'good to think'? This comparative study describes the mental foodscapes of Swedish and French people by asking them to say where, in time and space, they would go to in order to eat well. Both the Swedish and French respondents say they would avoid the US and fast-food establishments in order to eat well, but while the French in general point inward, toward the countryside of their region a couple of decades ago, the Swedes, in their choices, want to go far away, to the Mediterranean region, South-east Asia or an abstract wilderness. The article argues that the reason for these differences is that consumers in these two countries use different dominant rationalities to judge the food of different places - a nutritional rationality in Sweden and a rationality of origin in France - and it proceeds to identify the politico-historical roots of these rationalities. Finally, it argues that while each rationality makes a certain set of food and place qualities cognizable and judgeable, others, such as exotic foods in France and conviviality in Sweden, are left non-cognizable and difficult to judge.

Attitudes, experiences and expectations on new intimate relationships in later life: Results from a Swedish national survey2013Inngår i: The Journal of Nutrition, Health & Aging: Abstract Book, Springer, 2013Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction: More than a million, or almost half, of the 60+ population (46%) in Sweden today are singles (never married, divorced, widows/widowers), a majority are women and the actual number as well as the proportion of divorcees is increasing. Still, we know very little about the intimate lives of non-married elderly people or about re-partnering in later life. This presentation focuses attitudes to, expectations on, and experiences of new intimate relations in later life.

Method: It is based on results from a new representative survey of 3 000 Swedes, 60-90 years old (boosted with regards to non-married people), that was developed from questions generated by a recent qualitative interview study with 28 Swedes who had established a new relationship after the age of 60.

Results: We describe attitudes, expectations and experiences in the older population generally, but also in different groups defined on the basis of gender, class, life-course phase, sexual orientation, degree of urbanization and intimacy career. We also focus the importance of intimate relationships for older people’s quality of life, and reason about how structures of informal support may look for older people who enter new intimate relationships.

Conclusion: As of november 2012 we are still in an early phase of the survey work, thus conclusions are pending.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to a neglected reality in Swedish socialresearch: New romantic relationships in later life. Our theoretical points of departure arethe transformation of intimacy and the transition from a culture of marriage to a cultureof divorce. We ask if the transformation of intimacy has reached later life and investigatelate life divorce, attitudes to and choice of union form in late life heterosexual relationships, relationship history and the importance of a relationship for life satisfaction. Theresults, which are based both on demographic data and a survey to 60–90 year old Swedes(n=1225), show that changing relationship patterns in late modern Sweden have reachedolder people. In romantic relationships initiated in later life LAT is the preferred unionform, followed by cohabitation, while marriage is a rare choice. In some respects thismakes older people an avant-garde in the investigation of alternative union forms. Theresults also show the importance of romantic relationships for life satisfaction in later life – independentof union form. Finally we criticize Swedish census data, which is based on civil status, for giving a somewhat distorted image of older people’s family and romantic lives.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate the consequences for linked lives ofentering into new intimate relationships in later life. The empirical data isbased on qualitative interviews with 28 Swedes aged 63 to 91 years, whohave established a new intimate relationship after the age of 60 years or arecurrently dating. Theories on linked lives and individualization are used. Theresults show that children were generally supportive of their older parents’unions and older individuals were often integrated into the new partner’snetwork. However, a new union also restructured the relationship chain sothat time and energy were redirected to the new partner. Older parentspreferred to be dependent on partners rather than children/others. A newpartner was described as a source for autonomy and a way of “unburdening”children. Results are discussed in light of Western individualism generallyand Swedish state supported individualism in particular.

The Impact of New Intimate Relationships in Later Life on Life Satisfaction2013Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Studies about intimacy in old age have mostly focused on institutionalized life-long marriages. Little research has focused on re-partnering in later life and the impact these relationships have on life satisfaction. Framed by Giddens’ Transformation of intimacy and Laslett’s Third age, as well as changing social and demographical conditions, this paper focuses on how different forms of new intimate relationships impact on life satisfaction in later life. Qualitative interviews were conducted with a strategic sample of 28 Swedes, 63–91 years, who were married, cohabiting and living apart together in new intimate heterosexual relationships initiated after the age of 60 or who were currently dating. The results showed the significance of new intimate relations the experience of life satisfaction in later life: The importance of being needed and confirmed by one’s partner, for intimacy and sexuality, for unloading children’s care responsibility, for sharing experiences in everyday life and for safety. The results also showed the importance of the partner as a resource for new experiences and a healthier life style. In conclusion, the results will be theorized in a time frame: First, in the light of new post (re)productive free time in the third age. Second, in the light of the finite remaining life-time. The results from the qualitative study will be contextualized by results from a representative survey on intimate relations among 3 000 60-90 year old Swedes (data collection has just finished).

    Abstract [en]

Although mobility in and out of intimate relationships has become more common in later life, it has been a neglected issue in social gerontology. In this article, we ask what characterises the formation of new intimate relationships in later life, and whether there are any specific conditions that separate these from relationships in earlier stages of the lifecourse. On the basis of qualitative interviews with 28 persons aged 63-91 who have established a new intimate heterosexual relationship after the age of 60 or who are dating singles, we argue that time constitutes such a central structuring condition. We discuss and theorise two aspects of time - post-(re) productive free time and remaining time - which have an important formative power on new late-in-life relationships. We argue that together these aspects form a central existential structure of ageing in many Western societies - the paradoxical condition of having lots of available free time but little time left in life - which, besides influencing new late-in-life relationships, might also be relevant to other aspects of and choices in later life.
