    Abstract [en]

This volume contains studies on Classical Antiquity presented to Professor Pontus Hellström on his 75th birthday in January 2014. The 41 papers cover subjects ranging from the Etruscans and Rome in the west, to Greece, the landscape of Karia, and to the Sanctuary of Zeus at Labraunda. Many papers deal with new discoveries at Labraunda, but sites in the surrounding area, such as Alabanda, Iasos, and Halikarnassos are well represented, as well as Ephesos and Smyrna. Many architectural studies are included, and these examine both Labraundan buildings and topics such as masonry, Vitruvius, the Erechtheion, stoas, watermills, and Lelegian houses. Other papers deal with ancient coins, ancient music, Greek meatballs, and Karian theories on the origin of ancient Greece.

Copper-ore mining in Sweden since the pre-Roman Iron Age: lake-sediment evidence of human activities at the Garpenberg ore field since 375 BCE2017Inngår i: Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, ISSN 2352-409X, E-ISSN 2001-1199, Vol. 12, s. 99-108Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Historical documents, archaeological evidence and lake-sediment records indicate thus far that significant mining of iron and copper ores in the Berglsagen mining region in central Sweden did not begin until the late 12th century -first with iron in Norberg - and thereafter spreading rapidly throughout the region during the 13th century when also copper was included (e.g. Falun). Prior to this, iron was produced domestically from secondary sources such as bog iron, while geochemical analyses of bronze artefacts indicate copper was imported. The parish of Garpenberg was at the intersection between historical iron-and copper-mining districts, and consequently we expected our sediment record from the lake Gruvsjon ('mine lake') to follow the established 13th century development. However, a 2-3-fold enrichment in copper and lead occurred already during 375-175 BCE (pre-Roman Iron Age), together with small increases in zinc, magnesium and charcoal particles, and changes in pollen. Together these indicate a clear pattern of human disturbance connected with the ore body bordering the lake. A second distinct phase occurred 115-275 CE, but with an 8-9-fold increase in copper and lead along with other indicators. From 400 CE a permanent increase in copper and lead occurred, which then accelerated from the 13th century as seen elsewhere in the region. Our results push back the evidence for early ore mining in Sweden from the Middle Ages to the pre-Roman Iron Age.

Norra Spånga: bebyggelse och samhälle under järnåldern1992Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is mainly based on funerals and deals with the structure during the Iron Age in northern Spånga in the south of Uppland, Sweden. The investigation area is about 3x7 kilometres large and is situated about 12 kilometres from the centre of Stockholm. Geographically it is part of two river-valleys. During most of the Iron Age these were connected with the Baltic and were important ways of transport and communication. The landscape is typical for the Mälar-region. Between 1964 and 1976 the City Museum of Stockholm excavated about 1000 graves and 10 settlement and this is probably the most extensive excavations ever done in Sweden within such a limited area. Among Swedish settlement archaeologists the general opinion during the last decades has been that throughout the Iron Age the rural settlements in the Mälar-region consisted of single farmsteads. Each farm had a population of 6 to 8 persons including children. The existence of settlement units with several large Iron Age burial grounds and a number of registred graves above the average had been observed for a long time though and explained in different ways. But it has been considered unlikely that thcese units had a settlement structure different from the single farms. In northern Spånga Arvinge was such a settlement with three Iron Age cemeteries each with more than 50 registred graves. All registred and a great number of unknown, ancient monuments were excavated here. This unit has therefore been given the greatest importance in this thesis which tries to prove that Ärvinge during the Early Iron Age had a settlement consisting ot two oi three farmsteads geographically spread within its territory and at the beginning of the Late Iron Age, probably around 5-600 A.D., theese farms moved in on the place where Arvinge still is situated. From the archaeological evidence it has not been possible to decide whether Ärvinge during the Late Iron Age also was a real village with common ownership of the arable land. Subsequently Ärvinge also had an average population consisting of about 20 persons during the Iron Age. There also existed single farms in northern Spånga and they were perhaps the most common settlement structure here during the Late Iron Age. The settlement units of northern Spånga show different physical and chronological structures. An attempt has been made to divide them into three groups: primary units, early secondary units and late secondary units. The first mentioned have more than one farm on its territory the others are basically single farms. Socially the primary units with several farms within their territory probably ranked higher than the single farms. First it is natural to believe that farmers with more extensive lands had a better social status than those on small farms. Secondly this is also indicated by the fact that the primary units had more richly equipped graves.

Spår av textilproduktion: En analys av sländtrissor och vävtyngder från yngre järnålderslokaler i Birkas omland.2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Isotope values of the bioavailable strontium in inland southwestern Sweden-A baseline for mobility studies2018Inngår i: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 13, nr 10, artikkel-id e0204649Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The inland area of southwestern Sweden is well known for its well-preserved archaeological animal and human remains dating back to the Mesolithic and Neolithic (10000-4000 and 4000-1700 BC). They allow application of multiple bioarchaeological methods, giving insights into various and complementary aspects of prehistoric human life, as well as economic and social structures. One important aspect concerns human mobility and its relation to social networks and to circulation of objects. Here, strontium isotope analysis plays a crucial role. The present study aims to construct a strontium isotope baseline of southwestern Sweden with considerably greater coverage and higher resolution than previously published data. As the region has been affected by glacial events, the relation between bedrock geology and isotope signals of the bioavailable strontium in such areas is given special attention. We determined strontium isotope ratios for 61 water and five archaeological animal samples, and combined the data with previous measurements of two water and 21 non-domestic faunal samples. The results reveal a complex pattern. Several areas with distinct baseline ranges can be distinguished, although with overlaps between some of them. Overall, the bioavailable strontium isotope signals mirror the basement geology of the region. The highest ratios occur in the geologically oldest eastern parts of the Precambrian terrain, while lower ratios are found in the western part, and the lowest ratios occur in the youngest Paleozoic areas. At the same time, there are minor deviations compared to the underlying bedrock, due to glacial transport, overlying sediments, and local intrusions of younger rocks. The background data set now available allows for more nuanced and detailed interpretations of human and animal mobility in the region, in particular by identification of subregions with differing strontium isotope ratios within the Precambrian province. Also, we can now identify long distance mobility with greater confidence.

Felicium temporum reparatio: Labraunda in Late Antiquity (c. AD 300-600)2012Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study focuses on a quantitative analysis of Late Antique remains that have been recorded at Labraunda from 1948 to 2011, and that date mainly to the period c. AD 300-600. The finds are presented according to context in order to form more reliable chronologies and more profound find-related contextualization of the specific areas of study. The studied sample comprises of all the diagnostic material from Late Antiquity found at Labraunda, including architecture, architectural sculpture, ceramics, glass, inscriptions/graffiti, coins, organic remains, and various other small finds. The architectural remains include two church complexes, a residence with a tetraconch bath, and several rebuilt structures within the Classical temenos. Both the architectural remnants and the small finds are brought into wider socio-religious and socio-economic contexts in order to increase our knowledge of Labraunda at the end of Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents my work on five late-antique buildings discovered inLabraunda, divided into five parts. Part I discusses the East Church, PartII the recent work at the Tetraconch, Part III the South Thermae, Part IVthe remains of late-antique structures at the Oikoi building and finallyPart V the most recent work at the West Church. The thesis is put togetherfrom six separate articles that have been slightly revised in order to forma continuous text. The first published article New research on CarianLabraunda in late antiquity,1 was mainly a general survey of thelate-antique buildings and architectural marbles excavated at Labraundabetween 1948 and 1960. The section on the Byzantine Church, here called theEast Church (in Part I), was primarily based on my M.A. thesis TheByzantine Church at Labraunda.2 A more detailed architectural analysis onthe East Church was presented in the paper Recent research on the churchesof Labraunda at the 60-year-anniversary symposium of the excavations atLabraunda, held at the Royal Academy of Letters History and Antiquities inStockholm in November of 2008.3 I have published two more articles on theEast Church focusing on the excavations of 2005-2007. The article theByzantine Churches,4 was a descriptive account for the excavation reportbut also with a short note on the restoration work inside the SouthThermae, cf. part 3.1. The article Late-antique glass in sacred context: ahagiasma at Carian Labraunda,5 was an attempt to contextualize the glassfound inside the apse-channel of the East Church; an important find, whichI consider to be the possible genesis of the site as a Christian sanctuary.Part II, deals with the Tetraconch complex from an architectural point ofview, but also the discussion of private establishments in a supposedextra-urban, sanctuary context. It is based on two preliminaryarchaeological reports on the excavations of 2008-2009.6 However, much hasbeen added to this section that has not previously been published. PartsIII and IV, are both mainly based on the first survey of the site in 2006,7but the section on the South Thermae has, as mentioned above, also beensupplemented with the small section on the restoration of 2007. The finalsection, Part V, focuses on the so-called West Church, and is based on thepreliminary archaeological report of 2009.8 Short reports on the marbleambo found in 2007, have been published in several articles.

    Abstract [en]

New archaeological excavations and surveys have been initiated in Carian Labraunda during 2005 and 2006—aimed at investigating Late Antique activities on the site. The Late Roman and Early Byzantine remains of the sanctuary have not been closely examined previously. However, these epochs have left significant traces behind, in the form of large buildings such as the Byzantine Church and the South Thermae. There are also several Early Byzantine alterations of Classical Hekatomnid buildings, for example in the Oikoi and the Doric House. Excavations have been carried out in the church, resulting in new knowledge of the edifice’s architectural context and producing large quantities of Late Antique finds. Furthermore, a new plan of the South Thermae, the first complete one, is being produced, along with descriptions of the walls and building-materials. The new project also deals with the documentation of architectural marbles of Late Antiquity. Finally, an initial report is presented here, describing a sculptured marble capital, of Early Byzantine type, which was found in 2005. The capital is one of only a few Late Antique marbles to have escaped Labraunda’s medieval limekilns. The design of its ornament is described and discussed in relation to a comparable example found in Carian Bargylia.

Sacred Movement to Labraunda - an Archaeological Perspective2012Inngår i: HEROM - Journal on Hellenistic and Roman Material Culture, ISSN 2294-4273, Vol. 1, nr 1, s. 157-195Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Sacred movement to the Karian sanctuary of Labraunda in Late Antiquity is here for the first time closely examined. The focus is set on scrutinizing the material remains that emerged from these journeys, and this will be further supplemented by a brief survey of what is known about the equivalent occur- rence in the Imperial period. It is argued that Labraunda's strategic location along the mountain passage between the Mylasa plain and the Karian inland provided safe over-night accommodation and trade opportunities, which consequently stimulated the economy of the sanctuary. Two churches have been excavated immediately outside of the ancient temenoswall, dating from the foundation of Labraunda as a Christian locus sanctus during the early fifth century. The topography of Labraunda with its rich water sources and fertile terraces, along with the eco- nomically fortunate locality, formed an appealing milieu that kept the site's importance also during the Byzantine Middle period.
