    Abstract [en]

    From a synchronic point of view, the various accentuation systems found in the Baltic and Slavic languages differ considerably from each other. We find languages with free accent and languages with fixed accent, languages with and without syllabic tones, and languages with and without a distinction between short and long vowels. Yet despite the apparent diversity in the attested Baltic and Slavic languages, the sources from which these languages have developed - the reconstructed languages referred to as Proto-Baltic and Proto-Slavic respectively - seem to have had very similar accentuation systems. The prehistory and development of the Baltic and Slavic accentuation systems is the main topic of this book, which contains sixteen articles on Baltic and Slavic accentology written by some of the world's leading specialists in this field.

    Abstract [en]

    The present text examines the translation of multiethnic youth language in Jonas Hassen Khemiri’s novel Ett öga rött (One Eye Red). Khemiri’s language is analysed, its function described and compared with the German translation of the book using representative text excerpts. Khemiri’s language is shown to deviate considerably from standard language and should be understood functionally as protest language. Most conspicuous is the continuous even word order after adverbial in the prefield instead of an inversion. Also typical is the use of nouns without articles, wrong genders, or ethnolectal lexemes such as flos (money), keff (bad) etc. Idioms are often used in an incorrect form and word formation is idiosyncratic. Khemiri’s language is characterised as a highly stylised, aesthetic artificial language inspired by multiethnic youth language (Rinkeby Swedish). The translation is typified by grammatically ordinary standard language, whose lexis is striking only for its coarse and youth language lexemes. There are no indications to suggest a German ethnolect and/or an artificial language. The target text is more neutral and lacking in humour, resulting in an impoverishment of the original text. The contrast between multiethnic youth language and standard language is also lost. The translation strategy used can best be described as einbürgernd (domesticating), as the linguistic idiosyncrasies for the most part are translated with grammatically correct standard language. The presumed effect on the reader is classed as inappropriate. Parallels between the German and the Swedish language could have been exploited in the translation without running the risk of appearing odd.

    Abstract [en]

    We tested the hypothesis that lexical-semantic access of inflected words is governed by the word stem. Object drawings overlaid with a dot/arrow marking position/movement were matched with corresponding linguistic expressions like from the house. To test whether the stem dominates lexical-semantic access irrespective of its position, we used Swedish prepositional phrases (locative information via preposition immediately preceding the stem) or Finnish case-inflected words (locative information via suffix immediately following the stem). Both in monolingual Swedish and in bilingual Finnish-Swedish speakers, correct stems with incorrect prepositions/case-endings were hardest to reject. This finding supports the view that the stem is indeed the dominant unit in meaning access of inflected words.

Glitterscenen, her sixth novel, published in September 2009, was eagerly awaited in both countries as a successor to her earlier prize-winning novel Den amerikanska flickan (The American girl).

    A second aim is to compare press reviews in Finland and Sweden. The empirical material for the study comprised 25 press rewievs, of which 12 were published in Finnish, and 13 in Swedish newspapers. Usually, press rewiews consist of tree sections: description, interpretation and evaluation. In this study, analysis followed the structure of the press reviews. The analysis also partly reflects previous researsh on Finnish literature´s reader reception in Sweden.

    In general, reviewers in Finland and Sweden have similar approaches to describing, interpreting and evaluating Fagerholm’s novel.     Polemik in den Schriften Melchior Hoffmans: Inszenierungen rhetorischer Streitkultur in der Reformationszeit2013Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    The way in which Reformation conflicts were carried out by the leading clerical Reformers has been studied in depth, but those at the margins of the Reformation have often been neglected. Hence, this thesis examines lay perceptions and manifestations of the ‘rhetorical Streitkultur’ (culture of conflict) through the writings of the furrier and radical reformer Melchior Hoffman.

    After an introductory chapter, the second chapter of the study provides a detailed theoretical framework with three main objectives: First, it introduces the concept of the ‘rhetorical Streitkultur,’ in order to more thoroughly describe the manner in which cultural norms and the staging of debates in writing interrelate. Second, the notion of ‘polemics’ is redefined, and its performative nature is stressed. Third, the theoretical part of the dissertation generates a classification system for different types of polemical communication situations: ‘overt’ vs. ‘covert’, and ‘direct’ vs. ‘indirect’.

    The analyses of Hoffman’s polemic pamphlets are divided into two sections: Chapter three examines how Hoffman polemicizes ‘overtly’ and/or ‘directly’ in the controversy with Nikolaus von Amsdorf, while chapter four attends to texts in which he polemicizes ‘covertly’ and/or ‘indirectly.’ The analyses show in detail how these different types of communicative situations are bound up with certain rhetorical strategies and particular polemical functions in Hoffman’s texts.

    In addition to the mode of polemical communication, another central point of the analysis in chapter three and four consists of how Hoffman positions himself with respect to his status as a layman. The focus here is on how Hoffman utilizes (self-)attributions, attitude, and language in his polemic pamphlets to influence perceptions and conceptions of hierarchy and social roles. Thus, Hoffman’s polemics against his clerical opponents can provide new insights about the role of laymen within Reformation discourse and culture.

    Von Jungen Pionieren und Gangstern: Der Kinder- und Jugendkriminalroman in der DDR2011Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

    This dissertation examines detective novels for children and young adults written and published in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The aim of the thesis is to study how the genre developed under the conditions of a socialist society. The analysis of the 66 texts included in the corpus is based on a socio-historical approach assuming that dialogical interdependencies between texts and society exist and can be verified. Central to the analytical work with the texts is the thesis that detective novels written for young readers reflect the socio-political development in East-German society. It shows, however, that—because of their strong didactic impetus—the texts did generally not, like detective novels for adults, develop into a forum for socio-critical discussions. In the diachronic development, which extends from the beginning in the Soviet occupation zone to the post-reunification period, it is shown that changing socio-political conditions interact with the texts, which becomes particularly obvious in the changing presentation of the detectives and criminals.

    Studying the texts, the dissertation presents basic research and an overview of the genre. Ten texts from the corpus are subject to a detailed analysis in order to deepen the general insights with examples. This way, different aspects of detective novels for children and young adults in the GDR are emphasized, e.g. the interaction between text and illustration. The embedding of figures in a socialist community produces further motives frequently occurring in the texts such as: the Heimat motive or the anti-fascist society.

    Although the majority of the texts do not go beyond stereotypical representations of characters, criminal cases, and locations—and hence demonstrate the close link between (normative) ideas of society and their literary implementation—the body of texts contains some innovative exceptions in which the social development is questioned and even cautiously criticized.

    Abstract [en]

    In my study I analyse Reijo Mäki’s four books Pimeyden tango (1997), Pahan suudelma (1998), Keltainen leski (1999) and Black Jack (2003).  I’m interested whether Mäki as a writer belongs to traditional Finnish prose which started from Aleksis Kivi than genre of crime literature.

    After Kai Laitinen humour, nature and democracy are typical to Finnish literature tradition.  Mäki’s milieu descriptions are closer to the Finnish literary tradition. Through nature the characters mirror their emotions, feelings and events. The environment is not only seen, but it is also smelled, touched and heard. Through the marks of the nature characters give right as well as misleading clues. It is particularly characteristic to the Finnish literary tradition to describe division of life, social status and the freedom and lack of it through weather, which is not typical to the crime literature.  Also Mäki’s characters are democratic and everyday and strongly individualistic and anti-social despite of person’s social standing.  Laitinen’s point of view is that in the Finnish literary tradition equality is only between men. In Mäki’s fiction women characters are narrow and they are only seen how they look.

    Mäki represents the modern criminal literature in which are characteristics of puzzle, hard-boiled and police novels. Unlike hardboiled detective stories his books are full of verbal descriptions. In conclusion Mäki’s books clearly represent the Finnish literary tradition.

    Although lying is a classical topic in philosophy, and certainly is very important in everyday life, there is a lack of genuine linguistic analyses of lying. In this article, lying is viewed as a speech act of insincere assertion. The liar misrepresents truth in order to deceive. While definitions like this are fairly common, consequences for the semantics/pragmatics interface, and, more importantly, for the ongoing debate about minimalism versus contextualism, never have been worked out in detail. This is what the article aims at, concentrating on three relevant issues, namely intentionality, implicature, and imprecision. It takes a moderate contextualist stand by showing that the possibility of lying is built into the language, thus allowing speakers to manipulate the representation of truth according to certain social goals. A case in point would be lying while saying the truth; in this case, the risk of being caught in the act of lying is reduced.

    This study is a thematic-descriptive investigation of the reproduction and transformation of norms in the theoretical discourse on the novel during the 1960s. Primary literature consists of articles and essays published in West German literary and cultural journals 1959-1967.

    The term ‘discourse’ is applied partly in accordance with Busse/Hermanns/Teubert (1994), the term ‘theory of the novel’ chiefly in accordance with Lämmert (ed. 1984). ‘Ideology’ is not used in the sense of ‘false ideology’ but rather as an umbrella term for various types of value-related statements. From this, the theory-of-the-novel discourse is perceived as an aesthetic-ideological discourse, containing statements directed at the contemporary novel which have clear programmatic function and significant thematic width.

    The objective of the investigation is to show that specific comprehensive thematic fields – Werteverlust (breakdown and loss of values), Subjektproblematik (‘problematisation of the concept of the subject’), Sprachproblematik (language related problems) and Realitätszerfall (reality loss, breakdown of the reality concept) – bear discursive significance as regards the discussion of literary norms during the 1960s, and that this discussion realises itself as two aesthetic-ideological discourses competing for interpretative precedence. The major issues are: Which reiterated patterns of argumentation, i.e. norm-related categories, concepts and rhetorical patterns, are used in the discourses for diagnoses and programmatic imperatives? How are the comprehensive thematic fields accentuated? What is treated, postulated or set aside as ‘truth’? How - based on the above – is the novel formulated as a ‘problem’ (‘crisis of the novel’)?

    The investigation confirms that the comprehensive thematic fields are particularly central to the theoretical discussion of literature in the 1960s. This manifests itself as a discursive re-evaluation process which may be characterised as a conflict between an ‘aesthetic-conservative discourse’ and a ‘discourse of change’ (‘Veränderungsdiskurs’) where the right to define and evaluate the novel in terms of literature is at stake. It is in the collision between these two discourses and their largely incompatible concepts of literature that the novel discursively becomes a ‘problem’. The discourses are maintained by specific reiterated patterns of argumentation which in the investigation are subsumed under the following headings: die negative Modernität (negative modernity), das bloß Moderne (phenomena of ‘fashionable character’, simply expressing trends) and das Überzeitliche und das Ganze (the timeless and the totality); respectively die traditionelle, bürgerliche Gesellschaft (traditional bourgeois society), die technisch-sprachliche Realität (technolinguistic reality) and der subjektive, sprachliche Realitätsausschnitt (‘subjective language based slice of reality’). The first group of argumentation patterns is linked to universal, ‘eternal’ and essential categories and inherited norms, ethical-aesthetical educational grounding and a ‘rhetoric of the spirit’ or of ‘mankind’, oriented around a specific reception of German Classicism and Idealism, a downgrading of the present and an upgrading of the past. The other group embraces an incipient constructivism, contextually bound and societal categories and norms as well as implicitly critical programmes of enlightenment, devaluing the past and ‘acknowledging’ rather than criticising the present. In doing so they tend rather to realise a rhetoric of the linguistic and political reality and of more modest programmatic proposals.

    The aim of the following study was to illustrate that the death of the protagonist in Thomas Mann’s novel, Death in Venice, was, in the end, not just a corporeal, but rather a spiritual one, and ultimately the result of his failure to explore the potential and true depth of human feeling. The definition of the term decadence as a state "against nature: the revulsion against both physical and human nature, preference for the artificial" (Ritter 1992, 87) served as the main theoretical basis of the study and proved helpful in articulating the protagonist’s tragic flaw, namely, his preference for the shallow image of mere physical beauty. Furthermore, the perceptive views of critics Hermann Luft and Rolf Günter Renner on the novel’s underlying conflict between the spiritual and physical conception of beauty helped to substantiate the study’s own stance on the negative implications of the type of aesthetic formalism that leads to the protagonist’s ultimate demise. Focusing on these aspects helped to provide an analysis of the novel that is not only restricted to a socio-political-historical context, but which sees the novel in general as the embodiment of an essential universal and timeless message and ideal, namely, that one must strive to penetrate the realm of physical, sensual phenomena in this world in order to reach the content, i.e. the spiritual, eternal attributes which lie behind it.

    Abstract

    The novel Berlin Alexanderplatz by Alfred Döblin was published in 1929. It has subsequently been widely recognized as an important part of German Modernism due to its new conception of the hero, as well as its innovative narrative structure. The aim of this essay is both to determine the innovatory details in the concept of the hero and to describe the narrative structure, which is essential for a comprehensive understanding of the hero Franz Biberkopf. Hence, not only direct utterances by the hero and other narrative techniques are dealt with in the analysis, but also a wider context, including social interaction and the impact of the metropolis. In Berlin Alexanderplatz the concept of the hero is based on a fundamental criticism of the bourgeois view of the human being, a view which derives from the classical Homeric epic, stretching over the Enlightenment and into Döblin's time. However, the narrative innovation in Berlin Alexanderplatz is not only to be seen as the personal result of Döblin's critical reflections on the narrative tradition of the ʻbourgeois epicʼ, but also as one manifestation among others within the framework of Modernist criticism.

    This PhD study explores multilingualism in Finnish language youth radio broadcasting, with interactional and ethnographic data from Sweden Finnish and Finnish youth radio broadcasting. The interactional data consist of audio recordings from radio programs, while the ethnographic data consist of observations, logbook notes and interviews. The data were recorded and collected during the summer of 2005 from Radio Sweden’s (SR) Finnish language radio station Sisuradio and its youth program Klubi-Klubben, and simultaneously from Finnish YleX, from its X-Ryhmä and YleX Tänään programs.

    Multilingualism within radio broadcasting is investigated from a qualitative and sociolinguistic viewpoint. The study consists of four independent empirical research articles, each tackling the research topic from a slightly different perspective (e.g., language alternation, humor, repertoires, rap flows). This approach is what I call revealing the small pictures of this study. Further, this study investigates some overarching implications and pinpoints general threads and themes of a more holistic big picture of what multilingualism sounds like in the youth radio programs. The focus of the analysis is interactional and functional.

    The study shows that there are many different kinds of multilingualisms: multilingualism in the late modern world differs from scene to scene. However, speakers and groups have varied kinds of multilingual repertoires at their disposal in different scenes. In addition, different multilingual repertoires are used for various functions and genres, such as entertainment, humor and the expressions of different identities, including expressing music expertise or being a rapper. English is used as resourse in all of these repertoires. The study makes visible multilingual life worlds where global and local features intertwine and where objects and discourse practices are constantly on the move.

    Abstract [en]

    On account of their practically unchallenged status as guardians of objective knowledge, dictionaries are influential elements of societal discourses. They are thus an authoritarian producer and reproducer of societal norms and ideas, and as an interesting object of investigation in critical lexicography consequently lend themselves to the investigation of authoritarian and normalising societal discourses on specific themes. However, dictionaries have to date only been used as primary sources for critical analysis on rare occasions. This study is an attempt at a corrective which explores the presentation of Islam in three editions of the Duden German Universal Dictionary (Deutsches Universalwörterbuch).

    The dictionaries studied present Islam to all intents and purposes as the Other. Christianity is established as a norm and the Self, and the Christian way of practising religion is depicted as prototypical for all other religions. However, the emphasis on Christianity and the exclusion of Islam also has a positive effect on the portrayal of Islam, as old prejudices on the alleged brutality of Islam are thus not reproduced.

    Med utgångspunkt i diskrimineringslagen och läroplanen analyseras i denna uppsats framställningen av kön och sexualitet i tre läroböcker för tyska för nybörjare. Analysen har ett normkritiskt och queerteoretiskt perspektiv och utgår ifrån att samhälleliga normer skapar makt och hierarkier mellan människor och grupper samt att det talade och skrivna språket spelar en betydande roll i norm(re)produktionen. Läroböckerna skapar en mycket heteronormativ bild av verkligheten, då figurerna ofta är stereotypt manliga och kvinnliga och då enbart heterosexuella kärleksrelationer och familjekonstellationer visas upp. I diskussionen ställs frågan om detta är förenligt med läroplanen, som bl.a. menar att skolan ska motverka traditionella könsmönster, och normkritisk pedagogik diskuteras som ett sätt att göra undervisningen mer inkluderande.

    This study examines factors which affect the pronunciation of Swedish learners of German as a foreign language. 18 samples were recorded and subsequently rated by German native speakers. The subject’s individual pronunciation results were linked to their respective answers regarding the following domains: Age of Learning, Length of Residence in a German-speaking country, Gender, Formal Instruction, Language Attitudes and Use and the realm of Ability and Skill. All of these variables have been subject to research on pronunciation in former studies. With the help of new questions and a modified method, this study aims to find new influential variables and support or disprove former findings. The most influential variables were Language Use, Length of Residence, Age of Learning, Special Pronunciation Training and Gender. The field of Ability and Skill showed inconclusive results, Formal Instruction had no significant influence on pronunciation and no new variables could be detected.
