Haikai Poetics: Buson, Kitō and the Interpretation of Renku Poetry2006Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation is a study of the poetics of haikai in eighteenth-century Japan. It is more specifically concerned with the works of Yosa Buson and some of his followers. Rather than being a study of certain poems, it is an investigation of theories of aesthetics and composition, and of criticism. Most studies of haikai focus on the short haiku (or hokku) form, but the present study is more concerned with the core form of this poetry, the long chains of verses called "renku" or "haikai no renga".

One important object of this study is to challenge some of the established views of haikai found in modern scholarship. For this purpose, many standpoints of haikai theory have been found useful, since they often approach questions of interpretation from new and unexpected angles. Theoretical stances that stress convention and traditionalism are criticized and the spirit of haikai is found to be more in concord with theories of cognitive poetics.

The dissertation consists of three parts. The first is a study of general haikai theory. In this part are discussed theories of aesthetics, theories of creativity, and a few questions related to the interpretation of this kind of poetry. This discussion focuses on those questions that are central in Buson’s own writing on poetics and puts them into a broader context.

The second part deals with practical theories of renku composing. An introductory chapter gives a historical background to many concepts used in Buson’s age, and this is followed by a full translation and critical study of a renku treatise written by his disciple Takai Kitō.

The last part is an investigation of modern criticism written on Buson’s renku. All existing full-length studies of these poems are discussed in comparison. The absence of a long critical tradition concerning Buson’s renku has, in many cases, prevented the formation of established interpretations, and this is ideal for a study of this kind.

The Town Plan of Jaipur: Its Sources and Narrations2004Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Jaipur’s town plan has been the subject of a multitude of suggestions regarding its origin. Jaipur was founded by Jaisingh II in 1727, and has since then been the capital of the State of Rajasthan, India. The city, which remains almost intact in respect of its foundation scheme, is laid out according to a plan with straight streets of varying breadths, residential blocks for different occupational groups, a palace complex and an astronomical observatory in the middle of the city. Such wellplanned cities are rarely found in northern India. In contrast to the absence of excavated planned cities, there are a number of treatises dealing with town planning, which provide detailed instructions for siting and arranging cities. Therefore many have sought the origin of the ground plan of Jaipur among the plans described in Hindu technical literature on architecture and town-planning. Jaisingh also had intensive contacts with Europeans, especially during the years preceeding the foundation of the city. As a result some have taken European town plans as their starting-point in their attempt to find sources of influence. In addition, Jaisingh’s deep interest in astronomy seems to have played a central role in the design of the city.

The present study discusses specific features of the traditions of rulership and education in the Amber House. These traditions included elements of the religious and philosophical sphere of Hinduism, as well as more recent traditions of the Kachvåhå rulers, who had adopted a great deal from the Mughals. After a description of the process of the layout, the town plans that have been proposed as models for Jaipur are presented and discussed in the light of the circumstances under which various beliefs about the model for Jaipur have emerged.

The arrangement of the urban space and the actions of Jaisingh are analysed in an interpretive chapter. Two principle objects of examination in this chapter are the concepts of religion and political power as they are connected with the kingship. Approaching the kingship from the religious perspective, the king is deified. Approaching the kingship from the perspective of political power, the king is proclaimed universal emperor. The town plan of Jaipur is analysed as an expression of these two approaches.

Design & innovation: A study on the South Korean and Swedish views upon design in relation to innovation2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis discusses the differences and similarities between the South Korean and the Swedish view on design in relation to innovation. It sets off introducing theories and recent studies upon the subject matter and also the closely related business discipline called "design management". The subject is then studied through analyzing and comparing of governmental actions within the field. Also the result from a brief questionnaire study has been used as basic material to find out how Swedish and Korean people look upon the subject matter. The questionnaire was carried out for this thesis exclusively and the results include answers on design-innovation-related questions from 35 Swedish and 35 Korean people. The result of the study shows that even though South Korea has a policy for innovation-related design and a governmental organ working exclusively with these questions, which Sweden has not, the countries share a lot of similarities in their approaches towards the subject.

Freedom of Navigation: UNCLOS, Chinese Perspectives and Personal Thoughts2011Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Freedom of navigation has played a vital role for economic prosperity in East Asia by promoting seaborne trade. As activities at the sea increase, the global concerns for navigational safety and security are growing. Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), vessels are endowed with different rights and obligations when they navigate through different maritime zones, e.g. internal waters, territorial sea, exclusive economic zone and high seas. Hence freedom of navigation seems to be limited to different extents. Due to environmental and national security concerns, coastal states enact domestic laws to regulate navigation in the waters under their jurisdiction. After spelling out different navigational regimes under the UNCLOS, this paper intends to examine China’s relevant legal arrangements and some cases of practice in relation to navigation. Personal thoughts will be provided on reflections of China’s perspectives in relation to UNCLOS and beyond.

Monogatari som genre i japansk litteratur2003Inngår i: Genrer och genreproblem/Genres and Their Problems: teoretiska och historiska perspektiv/Theoretical and Historical Perspectives, Daidalos, Göteborg , 2003Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Poetic Allusion: Some Aspects of the Role Played by Kokin Wakashuu as a Source of Poetic Allusion in Genji Monogatari1983Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This study concerns the role of Kokin Wakashuu poetry as a source of allusion (as HIKIUTA, "a poem alluded to") in the narrative, dialogue and letters of Genji Monogatari.

The material has been divided into 188 contexts, with one poem alluded to in each context. There are 128 Kokin Wakashuu poems alluded to, some of them more than once. According to the effect that HIKIUTA has in each context, a fourtype classification has been contructed:

    1) HIKIUTA as an aesthetic mode of expression.

HIKIUTA is used mainly for an aesthetic purpose, to create refined language. By allusion to poetry, things are implicitly told and the language suggests further nuances.

    2) HIKIUTA as an implicit mode of expression.

By making allusion to poems, refined language not only invokes the connotations of the poem alluded to, but also produces a shift in focus from what is explicitly stated to what is implicitly told.

    3) HIKIUTA as an expanding mode of expression.

The poem alluded to widens the scope of the expression of the Genji Monogatari context. The effect of this varies according to context. A situation or state of feelings is often summed up and clarified. Often parallels between the events of Genji Monogatari and its literary background are drawn by HIKIUTA.

    4) HIKIUTA as a means of recognition.

Here the poem alluded to constitutes, as it were, the firsthand source of knowledge about reality; reality is perceived in terms of the poem alluded to, the latter guides the interpretation of reality and constitutes an incentive for action in the world of Genji Monogatari.
