    The Andean Catch-22: ethnicity, class and resource governance in Bolivia and Ecuador2018Ingår i: Globalizations, ISSN 1474-7731, E-ISSN 1474-774X, Vol. 15, nr 5, s. 636-654Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study deals with the tensions and contradictions between resource governance, welfare policies, and the constitutionally recognized rights of nature and the indigenous peoples in Bolivia and Ecuador. We have identified a certain reductionism in current debates on these issues and propose a more systematic analytical focus on class and the class-ethnicity duality, as expressed in historical and contemporary indigenous struggles, and also confirmed via our ethnographic material. Drawing on the double bind as expressed in Joseph Heller's Catch-22 wherein the protagonists face situations in which they do not have any choice to achieve a net gain, this article centres on how national governments have to choose between the protections of rights - in this case ethnic and environmental rights - and welfare provision financed by extractive revenues. From the perspective of ecologically concerned indigenous actors, the Catch-22 is articulated in the choice or compromise between universal welfarism on the one hand, and ethno-environmental concerns on the other hand. The article draws primarily on ecosocialist arguments and on indigenous-culturalist perspectives on Good Life (Sumak Kawsay or Vivir Bien). A central finding is the existence of awareness among involved actors - oppositional movements and government authorities - that the Catch-22 quandary and joint class-ethnic concerns are unavoidable ingredients in their discourses, struggles, and understandings of Good Life.

    The basic continuity hypothesis of L1 to L2 production2018Ingår i: Second language research, ISSN 0267-6583, E-ISSN 1477-0326, Vol. 34, nr 3, s. 275-308Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

To what extent can second language (L2) speakers acquire a syntactic representation for an L2 structure absent in the first language (L1)? Findings from L2 structural priming studies are in conflict inasmuch as evidence for and against continuity between L1 and L2 sentence production has been shown. Furthermore, previous investigations have not adequately controlled for well-known animacy effects on choice of syntactic frames. I address the conflict of views in the field via three experiments of structural priming with native, Chinese, and Turkish speakers of English by means of an oral sentence-recall production task. The structure tested, the English genitive alternation, is subject to animacy effects as in the waiter’s photo / the photo of the waiter. Chinese and Turkish have no equivalent to English of genitives nor animacy effects in their genitive structure. Experiment 1 showed priming within-L1 English and found evidence of an animacy effect, albeit only numerical. Likewise, Experiment 2 showed priming within-L2 English and found the L1 Chinese were similarly susceptible to animacy effects. Experiment 3 also showed clear within-L2 English priming in Turkish speakers but the effects of animacy differed from the other groups. I argue the similarities between the native and L2 groups to constitute grounds for a basic continuity in L1 to L2 production.

The Discursive Paradox of Environmental Conflict: Between Ecologism and Economism in Ecuador2018Ingår i: Forum for Development Studies, ISSN 0803-9410, E-ISSN 1891-1765, Vol. 45, nr 3, s. 485-511Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Ecuador in times of the Rafael Correa government constitutes a prime example of the paradox of environmental conflict, in which all involved actors claim to represent the true vanguard concerning safeguarding of the environment and human conditions. The country presents the ecologically most progressive constitution in the world and also incorporates far-reaching recognition of indigenous peoples' rights. Notwithstanding, the economy remains reliant on extractivism and the government argues that the revenues of extractive industries benefit the common good. Anchored in a distinction between environmentalism and ecologism, this article identifies and problematizes dominant narratives among the actors of the contentious discursive scenarios, and analyses how the state and its ecological-indigenous opposition aim to position themselves within the political conflict. The central questions are: How are eco-progressive politics perceived, defined and expressed in this setting of an intercultural and plurinational society economically reliant on natural resource extraction? Which values, interests and ontological assumptions are at stake and how are these expressed in the discursive struggle? The research is based on several years of ethnographic fieldwork, combined with critical reading of the previous literature and discourse analysis. The article contributes to politico-environmental debates in Ecuador and beyond and shows that environmental struggle is entangled in broader political disputes conditioned by global economic structures. It likewise communicates with debates on argumentative discourse and illustrates that the same core arguments can constitute the argumentative basis of rivalling actors in political struggles, thus emphasizing the centrality of the contextual framing amid ontological divides in contentious discursive settings.

The Portuguese Language Continuum in Africa and Brazil2018Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The Portuguese Language Continuum in Africa and Brazil is the first publication in English to offer studies on a whole set of varieties of Portuguese in Africa as well as Brazilian Portuguese. Authored by specialists on varieties of Portuguese in Africa and Brazil, the eleven chapters and the epilogue promote a dialogue between researchers interested in their genesis, sociohistories and linguistic properties. Most chapters directly address the idea of a continuum of Portuguese derived from parallel sociohistorical and linguistic factors in Africa and Brazil, due to the colonial expansion of the language to new multilingual settings. The volume contributes to the understanding of structural properties that are often shared by several varieties in this continuum, and describes the various situations and domains of language use as well as sociocultural contexts where they have emerged and where they are being used.

Tracing Frantz Fanon´s African connections2018Ingår i: Memories in motion: Transnational and migratory perspectives in memory processes, Stockholm: Department of Romance Studies and Classics, Stockholm University , 2018, s. 31-32Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Departing from a postcolonial perspective, this study adopts the notions of travelling theories (Said, 1994), to trace Fanon´s thinking as enacted in political discourses of the Senegalese Leopold Senghor´s (Roynette, 2005;  Vivaldi, 2007) and the first Mozambican president, Samora Machel. According to Said (Said, 1993), it is precisely the geographical dispersion which allows for the renewed revolutionary potential of travelling theories and we will explore this claim through what we call the tracing of Fanon´s African connections focusing on selected political discourses from the 60s and 70s, but also providing examples of traces of Fanon´s legacy in contemporary Senegal and Mozambique. We will contextualize these with examples of Fanonian practices from other social and political movements in contemporary Africa, such as South Africa,  (Gibson, 2011).

Based on analyses of a sample of political discourses, newspaper articles, memoires and secondary literature, the study discusses the Fanonian traces in these African connections and includes a discussion of acknowledged or unconscious influences, creative borrowing and the wholesale appropriation of Fanon´s thinking and relate these to his main works: Black Skin, White Masks (Fanon, 2008 , [1952]), The Wretched of the Earth (Fanon, 2004, [1961]) and Towards the African Revolution (1964). The hypothesis is that the Fanonian discourse works as a travelling memory for many African leaders since the independence.

Preliminary results attest to the continued relevance of the Fanonian dual emphasis on the individual (subjective) and the social and, as his comment to Sartre, the specificity of the Fanonian perspective on the racial relationship entrenched in a colonial setting.  As a preliminary reflection we claim that the emphasis on the individual (subjective) was disregarded in the discursive superseding of the racial relationship, particularly identified among liberation movements that adopted (the most purist) socialist/marxist ideologies. We trace what we consider the erasure and invisibilization of the everyday racism and provide examples of more recent resurgences of Fanonian discourses and practices in contemporary social and political movements. We identify a renewed interest for the dual emphasis on the individual and the social and recognition of a reproduction of the colonial alienation and segregation in globalized late modernity.

Travelling theories? Caribbean postcolonial thinkers today: the cases of Frantz Fanon and Aimé Césaire2018Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Aimé Césaire (1913-2008) and Frantz Fanon (1925-1961) devoted their work to the radical criticism of colonialism. Whereas Césaire was mainly linked to the emergence of the aesthetics of négritude, Fanon analyzed everyday racism as an alienating spatial relation and considered colonization as a spatial organization – both material and mental. Torun Reite and Christophe Premat will show how the concepts of Césaire and Fanon are still used to describe material and mental borders remaining in different postcolonial contexts. They will also discuss the ways in which these concepts are rooted in the Caribbean context, but also what made them travel so well and connect with social and political movements far beyond this region.

Variaciones de Caracas: el espacio como imagen textual en Celeste Olalquiaga, Yolanda Pantin y Arturo Uslar Pietri2018Ingår i: Catedral Tomada, ISSN 0722-0723, E-ISSN 2169-0847, Vol. 6, nr 10, s. 43-72Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

Journalism studies almost exclusively rely on a sociology of integration perspective when theorizing the social function of journalism. Focus is put on if and how journalism facilitates democratic processes, encourages civic engagement and strengthens the sense of community. In providing an alternative view, this study mobilizes the cultural sociology of Pierre Bourdieua sociologist of conflictin order to study how young people's conditions of existence have given rise to vastly different orientations towards news and the normative order surrounding journalism. Based on focus group interviews with young people in Brazil and Sweden, the study shows that socialization into the world of news in the family and in school generates class-distinctive news orientations. The world of news is a site where social groups draw moral and cultural boundaries against each other. Since different social groups monopolize completely different news practices and preferences, they work to legitimate social differences. As such, the findings challenge common notions of news as creating the healthy citizen, and that news media provide spaces for the practice of civility and citizenship.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [fr]

21st century geopolitics: integration and development in the age of 'continental states'2017Ingår i: Territory, Politics, Governance, ISSN 2162-2671, Vol. 5, nr 4, s. 478-494Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

There is a need, in the 21st century, to analyse the interconnection between development and regional integration with a renewed attention to geopolitics. The aim of this paper is to explore the links between states, the economy and the international system in an ongoing process of transformation generating a new world order. Drawing on geopolitical theory, this study advances the argument that in the 21st century, those states in search of increasing autonomy apply strategies of regional integration and development-oriented policies, following a path to constructing new grossraums centred on states that are continental in scope. For this analysis the study proposes using a geopolitical perspective – here called ‘classical geopolitics’ – emphasizing the territorial dimension of state making, which includes economic policies and the formation of national identities. Particular attention is given to the spatial motif observed in international systems.

A recepção produtiva de El reino de este mundo em Memorial do Convento2017Ingår i: Revista Brasileira de Literatura Comparada, ISSN 0103-6963, Vol. 18, nr 29, s. 22Artikel i tidskrift (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [pt]

    Abstract [fr]

    Afro-Brazilian Cupópia: lexical and morphosyntactic features of a lexically driven in-group code2017Ingår i: Journal of Pidgin and Creole languages ( Print), ISSN 0920-9034, E-ISSN 1569-9870, Vol. 32, nr 1, s. 75-103Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The present paper focuses on the speech of a rural Afro-Brazilian community called Cafundó, situated 150 km from São Paulo. In 1978, when linguistic data were collected, the community constituted approximately eighty individuals, descendants of two slave women who inherited their owners’ proprieties. According to earlier studies, when the inhabitants of Cafundó spoke in their supposed ‘African language,’ Cupópia, they used structures borrowed from Portuguese and a vocabulary of possible African origin. A lexical analysis shows that the etymologies match historical and demographical data, indicating that speakers of varieties of Kimbundu, Kikongo and Umbundu dominated in the community. Through a morphosyntactic analysis, specific features were found in the data, such as copula absence and variable agreement patterns. By showing that some of Cupópia’s specific grammatical features are not derived from the Portuguese spoken by the same speakers but are instead shared with more restructured varieties, this paper defends the hypothesis that this lexically driven in-group code is not simply a regional variety of Portuguese with a number of African-derived words.

    Abstract [en]

The Lectionarium Placentinum contains in its Sanctorale (Piacenza,Bibl. Capitolare 62) two unknown sermons ascribed to Augustine, one of which is assigned tothe feast of the four Roman martyrs Basilides, Cyrinus, Nabor and Nazarius (f. 141-143r, inc.:Beati martyres ut securi), the other one on Peter’s walking on the sea (f. 182-182v, inc.: Nulluspotest esse securus navigator). In this joint study, we provide a critical edition and examinetheir authenticity. As a result, the sermon on the martyrs is proved authentic (Augustine, Sermo335N), the other one certainly spurious. In addition, a previously neglected fragment quoted inAmbrosius Autpertus’ Sermo de Mathia can be assigned to Augustine as well (Augustine, Sermo112B).

Bleak outlook for more democracy in France2017Ingår i: swissinfo.ch, nr July 18Artikel i tidskrift (Övrig (populärvetenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

Two months in, the presidency of Emmanuel Macron has him welcoming Donald Trump to Paris to celebrate the beginning of a war instead of bringing the people back into politics. So far, his administration does not look good for citizen participation.

The playwright Molière's works always ended with a “deus ex machina”, a mechanical God who solved the characters' problems and made a happy ending for the theatre stage. President Macron's political victory seems similar to this literary metaphor.

Brazil and Latin America: Between the Separation and Integration Paths2017Bok (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Brazil and Latin America: Between the Separation and Integration Paths challenges the “separatist” bias in the vision of Brazilian relations with its Latin American neighbors. By exploring the parallel existence of a path of integration, the focus of this study is on those forces which have intended to forge different forms of alignment, integration, and, sometimes, rightward union between Brazil and different Latin American countries. The authors analyze the ideas and projects inherent in the mindset of elites even before independence. They show that the path of integration has been more influential than is generally known. Ultimately, this book demonstrates the complexity around policy-making, debates on foreign policy, and the history of shaping the Brazilian self.

    Abstract [en]

This study addresses how Spanish-Swedish early and late bilinguals express motion events in their inherited language or first language: Spanish. We draw on the idea that the habitual conceptualization of events also underlies both L2 usage (Flecken et al, 2014: 51) and L1 usage in bilinguals (Bylund y Jarvis, 2011). Drawing both on studies about second language acquisition and bilingualism we aim to study how the typological patterns for motion encoding of the L2 (a satellite-framed language) may impact on motion encoding in the L1 (a verb-framed language), which the group under study has had but a reduced contact with while growing up in Sweden. Considering this fact and starting off from the assumption that an early age of break with the L1 environment has an impact on how motion events are described in an L1 (Bylund, 2009), we aim to outline the conceptualization of motion events of two groups of bilinguals, in all 32 subjects, and the different sorts of transfer phenomena that may affect their speech.  Oral narratives produced by the bilinguals have been compared to two control groups of Spanish and Swedish monolinguals and then been examined in order to analyze their conflation patterns regarding Manner of motion, Path and Ground information. Our results have lead us finally to conclude that both the individuals’ age of second language acquisition and their length of residence in the L2 environment have affected their L1 conceptualization patterns.

    Abstract [en]

This paper describes and analyzes most frequently used connectors expressing cause and consequence in argumentative texts produced by 12 Swedish university learner of Spanish as a foreign language (SFL) with a level B1- C1 according to MCERL (2002) (Domínguez García 2007, Fuentes Rodríguez and Alcaide Lara 2007, Martí Sánchez 2008). The objective is to compare the frequency, use and function of the textual connectors used by Swedish SFL learners and learners whose heritage language is Spanish (SHL), that is, people who have grown up in a minority language community, surrounded by a society in which the majority language is another (Montrul 2010). Succesively, next purpose is to compare the obtained results to selected texts from two control groups of which one contains texts in Spanish L (Corpus CEDEL21, Lozano 2008) and the other one texts in Swedish produced by speakers of Swedish L1 (Corpus ARGUS2). For the analysis of the collected material, we combine corpus linguistics and contrastive analysis (Altenberg 2002a, 2002b, 2007, 2010, Biber 2007, Johansson 2007, 2009, Pino Rodríguez 2010). The purpose of this pilot study is to better specify the use of these connectors in order to elaborate a sequential didactic proposal for teaching-learning of Spanish university students. Although proficiency in writing and interpretation of academic texts is one of the objectives of Spanish in higher education in Sweden, the level of proficiency varies considerably in both the SFL student group and SLH students, who represent 25% of the Spanish students at Stockholm university (Arencibia-Aguilera 2008, Valdés 2005).

    Abstract [en]

The tough-on-crime policies that have been implemented by several urban governments as a strategy to reduce crime, insecurity and violence, which range from higher punishments to lowering the age of criminal responsibility, have given contra-productive results so far (Davis, 2013; Muggah, 2012). In addition, catastrophic mid-term and long-term consequences have been documented to generate a greater spiral of organised and unorganised violence, as well as a severe deterioration of the social fabric in the cities where these measures are implemented (Dudley, 2013; PNUD, 2013; Wolf, 2011).

Different social sectors are expressing an increasing concern and demanding for governmental authorities to act in an even more drastic and efficient way when confronting urban crime and violence (INEGI, 2015; Latinobarómetro, 2015; PNUD, 2013).[1] This brings us to two essential questions: How could the ascending circles of urban violence and insecurity be deactivated? And, how could alternative and efficient responses to the underlying causes of violence and insecurity be generated to reduce them, while contributing to the reconstruction of the social fabric?

[1]  Latinobarometro of 2015 identifies delinquency as the most significant problem for the Mexican interviewees, with a 23%; well above the unemployment (16%) and the economy (8%). Also, more than 70% of the interviewees consider living in Mexico is less safe every day.

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the validity of the bonus for languages other than English (known as the Language Bonus) established in Australia to boost participation in language education. In subjecting this incentive plan to empirical investigation, we not only address a gap in the literature, but also continue the discussion on how to ensure that the efforts made by governments, schools, education agencies and teachers to support language study in schooling can have long-term success. Using data from a large-scale investigation, we consider the significance of the Language Bonus in influencing students' decisions to study a language at school and at university. While this paper has a local focus - an English-speaking country in which language study is not compulsory - it engages with questions from the broader agenda of providing incentives for learning languages. It will be relevant especially for language policy in English speaking countries.

    Abstract [es]

Digital resilience and civic engagement: the case of France after the terror attack of 14 July 20162017Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The traumatic event has this peculiar faculty to activate a strong memory experience. The people can exactly know what they did a day when a terror attack happened. There is a collective memory process which is not limited to witnesses nor bystanders. The aim of the project is to analyze live memories on Web 2.0 and study how social links are built under these circumstances. If the traditional media base their work on digital live experiences, it can be worth analyzing how these pieces of memory are reintegrated into a collective storytelling process. The mediatic echo is prevailing in the collection of these pieces of memory. The use of images (iconic forms) / symbols / texts is important to deal with collective trauma. The authorities elaborated specific codes of conduct with an attention to the victims, which includes categories of people more or less concerned by the attacks. Evaluating the traumatic impact is the most difficult task of official authorities. We would like to analyze the collective integration of digital pieces of memory by medias around the terror attacks in Nice. The acceleration of violence, the over flow of images created a feeling of brutality. This is why it is all the more important to question how the authorities react by producing a form of digital resilience. We would like to know whether an official discourse on victims reactivates feelings of solidarity and an identification to the core values of society or if it encourages a form of disruption of the social link (hatred, creation of scapegoat). The social networks will be the main references as you can have an exploration of different connections and transfers of data, information, fake news, feelings of fears. A database constituted of accounts explicitly expressing a feeling or a reaction will be built.

Dilemas e desafios na construção do Estado plurinacional: Territorialidade, Indigeneidade e Diálogo Deliberativo Intercultural no Equador2017Ingår i: Revista Movimentaçao, E-ISSN 2358-9205, Vol. 4, nr 6, s. 178-202Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [pt]

Does Macron leave room for citizen participation?2017Ingår i: swissinfo.ch.Artikel i tidskrift (Övrig (populärvetenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

Two-thirds of French voters chose Emmanuel Macron over Marine Le Pen in Sunday’s presidential elections, marking the beginning of a stalemate in France’s participatory democracy. That’s because the newly elected president has so far offered few paths to citizen empowerment. The 2017 election has brought a period of instability where a political majority will be hard to come by. Macron’s victory over Le Pen was only a partial success as he needs a majority in parliament to be able to govern. His charisma will not be sufficient for his candidates to win next month’s election for the legislature, and he needs to show a clear political profile. His En Marche (“On the Move”) slogan is a tool created to win the presidential race, but it does not come with a network in parliament.

Ciencias Politicas y Relaciones Internacionales, ISSN 2392-0343, Vol. 4, s. 61-81Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The unequal impact on public insecurity as another expression of socio-economic inequality: an initial exploration of the Mexican case

The increasing public insecurity has negatively affected the quality of life of all Mexicans. However, its impact is differentiated among diverse sectors of the population and it has deeper consequences depending on regional, gender, age and ethnic conditions. This situation is particularly sensible because it has aggravated the already historical socio-economic inequalities existing around the whole country. The two questions that this article tries to answer are: how public insecurity has exacerbated socio-economic inequality in Mexico? And what are the different responses of unequal socio-economic sectors to deal with public insecurity? In the article, it is argued that since 2006 when the war on drugs was launched, there has been a notorious increase of criminal violence and insecurity and the state authorities are incapable or unwilling to provide equitable public security to all Mexicans. Therefore, multiples organized and unorganized responses have been generated by the population, which go from contracting of private security forces, integrating self-defense groups, lynching, isolating in private enclaves among many other individual and collective, formal and informal, legal and non-legal measures that implicate differential cost and benefits for the people. The Mexican state representatives have the obligation to provide public security to all sectors without discrimination, but when they decide to decentralize, privatize or simply not act are falling to guarantee public security as a right that is considered a “key right” for the enjoinment of other rights such as free movement, free expression among many others. Consequently, it is damaging even more the already unequal socio-economic conditions experienced by the poorest and more vulnerable sectors in the country. The worsening of public security and the uneven responses from the population expose the lack of governance of the Mexican state representatives and their inability to distribute in an efficient and equitable manner a public good, such as public security. In addition, it shows its lack of capacity to exercise the legitimate monopoly of violence to face and control the non-state actors that generate insecurity and whom aggravated the inequality within the territories they control.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this comparative study is to analyse La Quintrala’s myth as a symbolic discourse, thereby filling a gap in the previous studies about La Quintrala.

The theoretical and methodological framework of this analysis consists of a hermeneutical approach based on the method of figurative structuralism: mythocriticism. This is a dual classification method of symbols: Diurnal and Nocturnal Orders that expose the symbolic structures formed by symbols and archetypes found in mythemes in a compilation of corpora. The first one is Gustavo Frías’ novels Tres Nombres para Catalina: Catrala (2008) and Tres nombres para Catalina: la doña de Campofrío (2008); the second is a historic essay (hypotext), Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna’s Los Lisperguer y la Quintrala (1944), and four novels: Magdalena Petit’s (2009) La Quintrala, Mercedes Valdivieso’s (1991) Maldita yo entre las Mujeres, Virginia Vidal’s (2002) Oro, veneno y puñal, and Gustavo Frías’ El Inquisidor (2008).

Mythocriticism is employed in the analysis to show what the mythical structure of the hero’s journey (Separation, Initiation, Return) reveal. Such journey is combined structurally with the Mother archetype (White, Red and Black Goddess), the intrinsic archetype of La Quintrala’s myth. The heroic structure unveils its own mythemes, La Quintrala’s and the first corpus’s mytheme through the diachronic and synchronic flow of the hero’s journey. This method permits to identify and compare the progression of the symbolic structures.

The analysis demonstrates a transformation of the symbolic structures between both corpora. This survey reveals that Vicuña Mackenna and Petit, and partially Vidal and El Inquisidor, exhibit an inclination to the diurnal symbols that strengthen, through a heterodiegetic narrator, the representations of the witch-femme fatale, counteractive attributes of the Red and Black Goddesses in the myth. Valdivieso, on the other hand, shows a propensity to the nocturnal symbols of inversion and intimacy that emphasize the Red Goddess’ features, though the novel also exposes La Quintrala as a witch-femme fatale. This exposure occurs through the use of both an autodiegetic narrator –La Quintrala– and a heterodiegetic one –the hypotext embodied in the popular voice– that appear to contrast each other. Finally, in Tres Nombres para Catalina, La Quintrala as the autodiegetic narrator dominates the whole story. She personifies the Great Goddess archetype who bestows her new positive attributes during the adventure. This novel assumes primordially the nocturnal symbolism incarnated by both the mystical and the synthetical structures and relegates the diurnal discourse of the hypotext to a secondary position in the narrative. Nonetheless, Tres Nombres para Catalina’s narrative still relies on the hypotext to reproduce and reconstruct all the mythemes in the myth of La Quintrala.

Conclusively, the results of this analysis indicate that the identification of all the mythemes supports the hypothesis of a transformation in the symbolic structures which characterize La Quintrala in both corpora. This reveals the embodiment of Tres Nombres para Catalina’s own mytheme, consisting of a vindication and a recognition to her indigenous heritage, and the acceptance of her mestizaje. As a consequence, Tres nombres para Catalina, in comparison to the second corpus, diverges and expands the symbolic structures, but still shows a continuity of the myth.

Endearment and address terms in family life: Children’s and parents’ directives in Italian and Swedish dinnertime interaction2017Ingår i: Journal of Pragmatics, ISSN 0378-2166, E-ISSN 1879-1387, Vol. 109, s. 82-94Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The focus of this study is on the use of endearment terms and affective resources (including other address terms, as well as nonverbal calibration) in requests sequences in inter-generational interaction, expanding prior work on requests as social action. This study documents verbal and embodied practices in dinnertime talk (30 hours of video) deployed by both parents and children in order to get things done. The analyses show ways in which endearment terms were recurrently deployed in request sequences, marking both trouble and social intimacy. Moreover, the data show that endearment terms were exclusively deployed by the parents, but not by their children. The adults and children drew on different repertoires of affective resources: the children deployed an array of nonverbal and nonvocal means to display their affective stances. In addition, the parents resorted to endearment terms, nicknames, and diminutives, as lexical devices invoking intimate bonds in a context where social solidarity might be at stake. Finally, while children’s requests target an immediate action concerning food and food-related activities rooted in the here and now of the interaction, parental requests can be often analyzed as redressive actions, prompted by the child’s (troublesome) behavior.

Entre lo impersonal y lo individual: Estrategias de impersonalización individualizadoras en el español y portugués europeos2017Ingår i: Spanish in Context, ISSN 1571-0718, E-ISSN 1571-0726, Vol. 14, nr 2, s. 209-229Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

This paper explores semantic extensions and pragmatic functions of two evidential forms found in La Paz Spanish, digamos ‘let’s say’ and dice ‘s/he says’. Both forms are inflected forms of the verb decir ‘to say’. The form dice ‘s/he says’ has the function of a reported evidential form, conforming to results from previous studies (Babel 2009; Olbertz 2007; Travis 2006; Laprade 1981), while the form digamos is used according to a previously unnoticed function of an inferential evidential.

    Abstract [en]

This dissertation investigates the expression of the indirect evidential subdomain in two languages in contact, i.e. the northern variety of Central Aymara and the variety of Spanish spoken in La Paz (Bolivia).

For this aim, the study uses first-hand data collected in La Paz and El Alto (Bolivia) during 2014 and 2015. Data was elicited through: the “Family Problems Picture” task (San Roque et al. 2012), formulated by the members of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and created specifically for the activation of cognitive categories such as evidentiality and mirativity; the “Pear Story” designed for Wallace Chafe, professor at the University of California, to collect narrative texts that show how humans perceive, elaborate and verbalize experience; and, finally, personal narratives, traditional narratives and interviews. Thirty-three recordings (12h 48’) of 48 Spanish-Aymara bilingual speakers (17 males, age range: 18-64) were fully transcribed and annotated. The resulting corpus consists of 33 transcriptions of which 14 are in Aymara (c. 19 154 words), whereas 19 are in Spanish (c. 46 245 words).

The dissertation is built around four research questions.

First, the dissertation shows the functions of the forms identified in the data in both languages. The study identifies for each form both evidential and non-evidential functions. Indirect evidential functions are systematically analyzed and classified by combining Willett’s (1988) and Aikhnvald’s (2004) classifications. The analysis shows evidential functions of forms that have not been previously studied as such, i.e. digamos and diciendo in Spanish and sañani and sapxi in Aymara, but it also reveals unnoticed evidential functions for previously described forms.

Second, the dissertation provides a clear view of the relationship between the evidential and the epistemic modal domain involved in the use of the forms identified. Two types of correlation are found. Both languages, indeed, show forms that only point out the way in which speakers acquired information and forms where the two domains overlap.

Third, the dissertation investigates speakers’ epistemic stance, in terms of commitment, towards information involved in the use of the evidential forms identified. The study shows that the forms which convey merely evidential information express mainly a medium-high commitment degree, whereas the forms in which the distinction between the evidential and the epistemic modal domain is blurred indicate a low degree of commitment.

Forth, the dissertation sheds light on the relationship between the expressions of the indirect evidential subdomain in the two languages. The study proposes a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the evidential types and subtypes in both languages. The results show a high degree of convergence between the two languages, suggesting also situations of influence of one language on the other.
