Where is food 'good to think'?: Rationalities of food and place in Sweden and France2013Ingår i: Social Science Information, ISSN 0539-0184, E-ISSN 1461-7412, Vol. 52, nr 1, s. 159-178Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Where is food 'good to think'? This comparative study describes the mental foodscapes of Swedish and French people by asking them to say where, in time and space, they would go to in order to eat well. Both the Swedish and French respondents say they would avoid the US and fast-food establishments in order to eat well, but while the French in general point inward, toward the countryside of their region a couple of decades ago, the Swedes, in their choices, want to go far away, to the Mediterranean region, South-east Asia or an abstract wilderness. The article argues that the reason for these differences is that consumers in these two countries use different dominant rationalities to judge the food of different places - a nutritional rationality in Sweden and a rationality of origin in France - and it proceeds to identify the politico-historical roots of these rationalities. Finally, it argues that while each rationality makes a certain set of food and place qualities cognizable and judgeable, others, such as exotic foods in France and conviviality in Sweden, are left non-cognizable and difficult to judge.

A focus group investigation of care-provider perspectives in Swedish institutions for the coersive care of substance abusers2005Ingår i: International Journal of Social Welfare, ISSN 1369-6866, E-ISSN 1468-2397, Vol. 14, nr 1, s. 55-64Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Treatent processes, what is being done and why it is being done in treatment arrangements, is a field of substane abuse study in wich relatively little research has been done. There are several methodological problems. The method used in this study of care providers´perspectives in Swedish LVM-institutions (institutions för the coercive care of substance abusers) i the focus group. In order to get a comprehensive approach, a strategic selection of four institutions was made, based on the institutions´therapeutic or pedagogical viewpoint. The analyses reveal that it is impossible to discern an explicit description of what constitutesmotivational work at any of the LVM institutions, that the proveders at the four LVM institutions, that the providers at the four LVM institutions gave completely different pictures of coersive care and that they used different tools to accomplish ther central task - to motivate the clients. At three of the institutions the clients´abuse problems were only mentioned in passing in their treatment, and the staff spoke of the clients´resistance and negative attitudes against the coercion as obstacles the had to negotiate in order to continue the motivation work. The most radical strategy was to work as though the coercion did not exist.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate individual and collective resistance strategies used by social service workers to improve their work situation. It also aims to describe what consequenses their acts of resistance has on an individual, collective and structural level. The study include ten qualitative interviews and three participating observations with social service workers within children and youth unit at the social Services in Stockholm County. The result is analysed with Hollander & Einwohners typology of resistance (2004). The study shows that speaking up towards high work load, union organization and to shift responsibility from the individual to the structural are powerfull ways to change the work load. This can lead to being seen as a trouble-maker, a vulnerable position in the workplace, but also to expanded resources like new positions. To take breaks, work slowly, a good atmosphere and overriding internal requirements for documentation are strategies that can bring stress and guilt but also make a great difference and bring understanding and support from the group. Covert resistance can lead to overt and individual resistance can lead to collective. The gist is that a rested social service worker can make a big difference to an experienced high work load.

    Abstract [sv]

Co-evaluated quality in new occupational groups - professional vision in digitalized work2017Ingår i: Book of Abstracts: 3rd International ProPEL Conference 2017, 2017, s. 5-6Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The digitalization of working life has lead to extensively changed conditions for work in both classical and emergent professional groups. In classical professional groups, e.g. within healthcare, impacts of such changes in daily work has attracted attention in various research communities focussing among other on adaptations in ways of working or changed patterns of collaboration. However, as a consequence of the society’s digitalization of work and leisure practices, new occupational settings and professional groups have emerged where it can be argued that new forms of knowledge and competence have evolved and become highly specialized. Among these professional groups a recurrent activity is assessment and evaluations of end-services and products. During assessment activities colleagues orient towards digital tools, designs and activities by negotiating understandings of quality. Yet, the work practices of such emerging occupational groups are unexplored in relation to how work is constituted and how professional knowledge becomes a subject matter among the professionals themselves. In this paper, we address these questions by exploring the conditions for collaborative work between colleagues in the IT support sector and computer game development industry. The aim is to explore how professional knowledge and competence are displayed and negotiated during different forms of assessment activities. Theoretically and methodologically we study naturally occurring activities of working life with a focus on participant interaction and the participants’ ways of orienting towards phenomena relevant for conducting work. In the paper, Goodwin’s (1994) notion of professional vision is central for teasing out the participants’ ways of assessing features relevant for the community of practice and making visible local knowledge and learning in the professional field. The empirical materials consist of video recordings from evaluation practices from a global IT support and from a game award event with participants from the computer game industry. Preliminary findings point to participant driven textual and interactional practices of negotiation. In these negotiations domain specific knowledge is displayed by participants through forward oriented reasoning and by addressing the relation between the particular case and general aspects of that case. The paper illustrates these findings by exploring practices deeply connected to work activities and settings as well as products. In the IT support milieu, collaborative assessment activities separated from the daily handling of support errands found a basis for discussing and developing ways of working. The forward oriented assessment orientation by participants is shown in cases where documented errands in IT-systems are reviewed and reformulated into suggestions of future actions by explicating local knowledge emerged within the organization. The participants in the game evaluation setting rely on hands on and “back-seat gaming” as assessment practices in order to establish shared access to the phenomena being assessed, and via such demonstrations negotiate particular game demos qualities and potentials in the future in relation to established game genres. In both settings, individual cases are used in different ways as textual and interactional resources for highlighting ways of seeing more general characters adhering to specific cultural values and organizational issues for the particular occupational group.

Opportunities and obstacles implementing animal welfare friendly meat to the Swedish public catering sector2014Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 80 poäng / 120 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Provision of meat to public catering canteens in Sweden is done through public procurement processes according to the Law of Public Procurement. However, due to the lack of a harmonized assessment standard and policy for communication throughout the supply chain, there is no animal welfare certification or label that contracting authorities can use to verify animal welfare friendly meat, in order to verify that the meat they purchase comes from reliable sources. My question is; is there a future in which animal welfare friendly meat is provided as the norm, to consumers at public canteens? To answer this question, the aim of this thesis was to identify a feasible way for Swedish wholesale dealers who provide food to the public sector, to implement meat originating from a source where animal-based assessments have been made according to the Welfare Quality® project.

The findings showed that the top four critical elements to consider for an animal welfare friendly future are: 1. The consciousness and attitude by each stakeholder – a positive attitude among not only supply chain actors but also among the decision makers eases the process to bring animal welfare friendly meat. 2. The local political vision - in order for contracting authorities to work proactively towards bringing animal welfare friendly meat the political vision is fundamental. 3. A united legislation on animal welfare friendly systems in EU - based upon an animal-based assessment standard. 4. The Law of Public Procurement and its stance on an animal welfare friendly production – the requirements that can be set from an animal-based assessment system needs to be compatible with the Law of Public Procurement. Further research on the specific findings is recommended in order to deeper evaluate the needs to implement animal welfare friendly meat to Swedish public catering canteens.

Cumulative childhood adversity, adolescent psychiatric disorder and violent offending in young adulthood2019Ingår i: European Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1101-1262, E-ISSN 1464-360X, Vol. 29, nr 5, s. 855-861Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Childhood adversity (CA) is a risk indicator for psychiatric morbidity. Although CA has been linked to violent offending, limited research has considered adolescent psychiatric disorder as a mediating factor. The current study examined whether adolescent psychiatric disorder mediates the association between CA and violent offending.

    Methods

We used a cohort of 476 103 individuals born in 1984–1988 in Sweden. Register-based CAs included parental death, substance abuse and psychiatric disorder, parental criminal offending, parental separation, public assistance, child welfare intervention and residential instability. Adolescent psychiatric disorder was defined as being treated with a psychiatric diagnosis prior to age 20. Estimates of risk of violent offending after age 20 were calculated as incidence rate ratios (IRRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Mediation was tested with the bootstrap method.

    Results

Exposure to CA was positively associated with violent offending, especially when accumulated. Individuals exposed to 4+ CAs who were also treated for psychiatric disorder had a 12-fold elevated risk for violent offending (adjusted IRR 12.2, 95% CI 10.6–14.0). Corresponding IRR among 4+ CA youth with no psychiatric disorder was 5.1 (95% CI 4.5–5.6). Psychiatric disorder mediated the association between CA and violent offending.

    Conclusion

CA is associated with elevated risk for violent offending in early adulthood, and the association is partly mediated by adolescent psychiatric disorder. Individuals exposed to cumulative CA who also develop adolescent psychopathology should be regarded as a high-risk group for violent offending, by professionals in social and health services that come into contact with this group.

Walking the talk: Political consumers and their information search towards more sustainable consumption choices2010Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (magisterexamen), 20 poäng / 30 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Political consumers, by using their consumerism to make political statements, constitute a potential force in changing global consumption patterns towards more sustainable ones. Thus new insights concerning this specific group and its ways of searching for information prior to a purchase decision might help understand the mechanisms behind sustainable consumption choices. This study is based on a series of twelve personal qualitative interviews conducted with Swedish consumers of sustainable goods. These interviews confirmed certain characteristics known to political consumers, such as a high level of commitment, high standards regarding information and the frequent use of labelling schemes. Furthermore this study has shown the complexity experienced by this group of consumers regarding sustainability claims and the role of a chosen “sustainability champion” in helping make sense of this complex information. Finally this study reminds of the significance of respecting the consumer and his trust for a message as well as the need for simple and clear information tools to distinguish proper sustainable goods from others.

Constructing a Housing Database for Family Formation Analyses in Europe 1945-2010.2011Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to discuss the connections between housing policy and family dynamics, and to show how and why housing policy can affect fertility. Since WWII housing policy has changed considerably in European countries. The general policy trend has moved away from ample state subsidies and state regulations of housing markets, towards free market solutions for housing and housing construction, sharply decreasing general housing subsidies and a shift instead towards appointed subsidies to low-income areas and low-income groups. In spite of similar trends in housing policies between European countries, there are temporal as well as spatial variations between countries. These differences offer a possibility to identify effects of housing market conditions on fertility and family dynamics. One result of the changing policy trends is higher general costs for housing at household level. Based on empirical research it has been shown that there are significant links between housing costs and family dynamics, as increasing costs for housing has led to decreasing rates of fertility. Most European countries today face declining birth-rates. Analysing the connections between housing policy and fertility may therefore be highly relevant in order to better understand the effects of housing policies on society, in particular, the consequences for population development and family dynamics. At present, however, such studies may be carried out at national levels, but, at European level, these analyses are challenging, since there is a lack of data infrastructure and the data bases required for such research approach. This paper therefore suggests how a European data base on housing policy and housing market could be designed, by discussing essential variables and indicators to include in such a data base.

Marking the Unmarked: Theorizing Intersectionality and Lived Embodiment through Mammoth and Antichrist2016Ingår i: Illdisciplined Gender: Engaging Questions of Nature/Culture and Transgressive Encounters / [ed] Jacob Bull, Margaretha Fahlgren, Springer, 2016, s. 99-113Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article confronts the notion of intersectionality with its conditions of materiality and embodiment. Understanding intersectionality as an overarching framework for analyzing power imbalances, we locate the body at the core of intersectionality as the site or situation where intersectional identities emerge and are made manifest. Our point of departure is that identities are always embodied, socially, culturally, spatially, and historically situated, and in continuous relational becoming. Considering the relevance of the body in intersectional structures of domination, our analysis aims to elaborate on the ways in which categories of identity are inscribed precisely as bodily markers and reinforced through embodiment.

We discuss and develop the notion of intersectionality in light of lived embodiment. To facilitate our discussion, we use cultural representations, namely, the two contemporary films Mammoth by Lukas Moodysson (2009) and Antichrist by Lars von Trier (2009). The films serve as a particular lens through which intersections of power and dominance are brought to light as embodied, relational, and dynamic. By analyzing scenes from Mammoth and Antichrist, we highlight how intersectional identities are conditioned by and condition embodiment. Our analysis underlines how identity categorizations are inscribed on and in the body and how lived embodiment constitutes the very site in which seemingly stable identity categories intersect and have the potential of being both reproduced and transformed. This theoretical position not only brings to light bodies already marked by intersecting strands of oppression and marginalization but also makes visible the intersectional embodiment of privileged and seemingly unmarked bodies—it marks the unmarked.

Eco-gastronomy: creative food for transformation2016Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 40 poäng / 60 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Present-day food systems are characterised by industrial mass-production and are becoming exceedingly untenable from a social, ecological and economic perspective. The era of favourable growing conditions and stability is no longer guaranteed, and arguments for holistic and transformative solutions are raised, that can reconnect humanity to the biosphere and create resilient food systems. The overall aim of this study is to describe eco-gastronomy within a Swedish context, and to explore its potential to act as an incubator for change within the foodservice sector. The findings contribute to the transformation framework with contextual understanding on how sub-processes (in the preparation phase) play out in an eco-gastronomic context. One of the main challenges for the future and viability of eco-gastronomy is associated with limited supply and access to high quality and sustainable Swedish produce. Food professionals envision and innovate new pathways through social-ecological innovation, network building, novel organization and close collaboration (e.g. knowledge exchange, feedback). Collaborative efforts are made to support diversity, quality and access to eco-gastronomic produce. However, eco-gastronomic practices are both adaptive and transformative, and a potential trade-off is outlined between the goal of achieving an extensive change in food preferences and transformative production practices. Low social sustainability (e.g. low salaries) and small networks can threaten the longevity and expansion of eco-gastronomy. However, networks are growing in size and number, and a new type of food awareness is described, that in extension can become a seed to a more sustainable food culture. Eco-gastronomy is not a blueprint for resilient food systems but it provides solutions that can result in a more sustainable and delicious future.

Explaining the decline in Swedish Baltic Sea small-scale fisheries: A historical analysis of fishers in their  social and ecological context2013Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 40 poäng / 60 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

Swedish fisheries, as many other European fisheries are characterized by overcapacity. Efforts trying to reduce the overcapacity have led to fewer but bigger vessels. Hence, fish catches are aggregated among fewer and fewer fishers with bigger and bigger boats while problems with overcapacity remain. Instead, it is the fishers with smaller vessels that faced major declines and the Swedish Baltic Sea small-scale fisheries (SSF) have been identified to soon disappear. A disappearance would be unfortunate because SSF represent values that could be used in the development towards more ecological and social sustainable fisheries. The decline of SSF appears to be structural persistent, produced by factors interacting over time. To address the negative trend, it is essential to know how and why the decline became structural persistent. The objective of this study is therefore to investigate the long-term historical development of the SSF as a social-ecological system. A mixed-method approach was used to assess and identify interactions between fishers and contextual factors over time. The results show how the decline became structurally persistent in 1960s after a conjunction in time where fishers’ livelihood became more dependent upon fisheries while fish abundance started to decline. After the conjunction fishers became trapped within a system where social and ecological contextual factors constrained their fishing practices. This thesis provides new insights on the difficult situation in which SSF are currently trapped. These insights can be used for future development of Swedish fisheries, which needs to move away from increased economic optimization and instead enhance long-term sustainability.

A Sea Change: Unpacking the different conceptualisations of fisheries development in Eastern Africa2018Självständigt arbete på avancerad nivå (masterexamen), 40 poäng / 60 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [en]

The global narratives behind development aid are constantly changing, but aid is still criticized for being ineffective. The most recent trend within development thinking is the push for complexity science concepts to be incorporated, in order to better capture the uncertainties and dynamics of the real world. Fisheries is a sector of development where priorities are changing and there are multiple approaches being advocated with no current consensus. The ways institutions and individuals think about the fisheries development system will therefore have implications for project implementation on the ground. In this study, I use the World Bank as a focal organisation to investigate how institutions and individuals conceptualise the fisheries development system in Eastern Africa, and whether this aligns with complexity thinking. I find a clear shift in the institutional paradigm of the World Bank from a narrow sectoral approach with tangible interventions such as infrastructure, to a more holistic approach pushing for softer solutions such as stakeholder engagement. I map the conceptualisations of a number of implementers of fisheries development projects in Tanzania and Kenya in relation to the World Bank paradigms and find that the actors have a wide range of perceptions, not necessarily buying into the current World Bank paradigm or agreeing with each other. Differing conceptualisations of fisheries development has implications for project implementation and the policy coherence of aid that is currently being pushed by the Paris Declaration of Aid Effectiveness and the Accra Agenda for Action. I also find evidence of complexity science concepts expressed by the implementers and the World Bank, with more concepts expressed in the current World Bank paradigm. It is encouraging to see actors and institutions incorporate complexity concepts into their thinking, although further work is needed to fully embed the paradigm into fisheries development.

What can the life course approach contribute to an understanding of longevity risk?2016Ingår i: Longitudinal and life course studies, ISSN 1124-9064, E-ISSN 1757-9597, Vol. 7, nr 2, s. 165-196Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Longevity risk means living longer than predicted. Attempts to understand longevity risk to date have concentrated on single diseases, usually coronary heart disease, and sought explanations in terms of risk factor change and medical innovation. In an opening paper, David Blane and colleagues point to evidence that suggests changes in positive health also should be considered; and that a life course approach can do so in a way that is socially and biologically plausible. Applying this approach to UK citizens currently aged 85 years suggests that life course research should give priority to trajectories across the whole life course and to the social and material contexts through which each cohort has passed. Testing these ideas will require inter-disciplinary and international comparative research. The opening paper is followed by commentaries from Hans-Werner Wahl, Mark Hayward, Aart Liefbroer and Gita Mishra. Finally Blane and colleagues respond to the points raised by the commentators.

Arbete & jämställdhet: förändringar under femtio år2013Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

”Number one: you can never have sex”: En analys av sexualitet och genus i tre skräckfilmer mellan 1997-2017.2017Självständigt arbete på grundnivå (kandidatexamen), 10 poäng / 15 hpStudentuppsats (Examensarbete)
    Abstract [sv]

Downsizing and purchases of psychotropic drugs: A longitudinal study of stayers, changers and unemployed2018Ingår i: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 13, nr 8, artikel-id e0203433Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background The evidence is insufficient regarding the association between organizational downsizing and employee mental health. Our aim was to analyze trajectories of prescribed sedatives and anxiolytics with a sufficiently long follow-up time to capture anticipation, implementation and adaption to a downsizing event among stayers, changers and those who become unemployed compared to unexposed employees. Method Swedish residents aged 20-54 years in 2007, with stable employment between 2004 and 2007, were followed between 2005 and 2013 (n = 2,305,795). Employment at a workplace with staff reductions >= 18% between two subsequent years in 2007-2011 (n = 915,461) indicated exposure to, and timing of, downsizing. The unexposed (n = 1,390,334) were randomized into four corresponding sub-cohorts. With generalized estimating equations, we calculated the odds ratios (OR) of purchasing prescribed anxiolytics or sedatives within nine 12-month periods, from four years before to four years after downsizing. In order to investigate whether the groups changed their probability of purchases over time, odds ratios (OR) and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated contrasting the prevalence of purchases during the first and the last 12-month period within four time periods for each exposure group. Results The odds of purchasing anxiolytics increased more for stayers (OR 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.06) and unemployed (OR 1.08, 95% CI 1.03-1.14) compared to unexposed before downsizing, and purchases continued to increase after downsizing for stayers. Among those without previous sickness absence, stayers increased their purchases of anxiolytics from the year before the event up to four years after the event. Trajectories for sedatives were similar but less pronounced. Conclusion This study indicates that being exposed to downsizing is associated with increased use of sedatives and anxiolytics, especially before the event, if the employee stays in the organization or becomes unemployed.

The Dark Side of Transformation: Latent Risks in Contemporary Sustainability Discourse2018Ingår i: Antipode, ISSN 0066-4812, E-ISSN 1467-8330, Vol. 50, nr 5, s. 1206-1223Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The notion of transformation is gaining traction in contemporary sustainability debates. New ways of theorising and supporting transformations are emerging and, so the argument goes, opening exciting spaces to (re)imagine and (re)structure radically different futures. Yet, questions remain about how the term is being translated from an academic concept into an assemblage of normative policies and practices, and how this process might shape social, political, and environmental change. Motivated by these questions, we identify five latent risks associated with discourse that frames transformation as apolitical and/or inevitable. We refer to these risks as the dark side of transformation. While we cannot predict the future of radical transformations towards sustainability, we suggest that scientists, policymakers, and practitioners need to consider such change in more inherently plural and political ways.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish government has set up 16 environmental goals for Sweden to achieve. One of

them is “Living forests”, which is the foundation for the “National strategy for the formal

protection of forests”. The “National strategy” puts the private forest owner at the centre of

attention in order to achieve the environmental goal “Living forests”. Adaptive Management

could help with the implementation of the “National strategy”. 9 qualitative interviews have

been done in order to examine how the communication between private forest owners and

responsible authorities works. The interviews give the private forest owners’ perspective, and

what they want the communication to be like, when it comes to conservation biology.

Communication, language, and how to deal with conservation biology have been the main

issues brought up during the interviews. The private forest owners also demand more

flexibility and a keener ear from responsible authorities. The private forest owners would like

a better knowledge of what is happening when it comes to conservation biology on their land.

The private forest owners and the responsible authorities do have similar goals for what they

want to achieve with the forest, but they disagree on how to achieve that goal.

    Abstract [sv]

Is perception of leadership influenced by office environment?2013Ingår i: Journal of Corporate Real Estate, ISSN 1463-001X, E-ISSN 1479-1048, Vol. 15, nr 3/4, s. 194-212Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – This explorative study aims to examine the impact of office type on employees' perception of managerial leadership, a largely unexplored area. A gender perspective is applied to examine whether women and men perceive leadership differently in different office types.

Design/methodology/approach – Cross-sectional study is based on 5,358 office employees from the Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Study of Health in 2010. The employees worked in the seven different office types identified in contemporary office design: cell-offices, shared-room offices, small open plan offices, medium-sized open plan offices, large open plan offices, flex-offices, and combi-offices. Cell-office was used as reference in the analysis.

Findings – Poorer ratings of leadership were found in shared-room offices, and better in medium-sized open plan offices. A tendency towards a gender difference in perceived leadership was found only in small open plan offices, which appear to be better for men and worse for women.

Practical implications – The results suggest that the office environment has an influence on perceived managerial leadership. This means office design should be considered in relation to leadership style in order for an organization to be successful.

Originality/value – To the authors' knowledge, no other study has investigated the relationship between office environment and managerial leadership.

Power and Legitimacy - Challenges from Russia2013Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This book sheds new light on the continuing debate within political thought as to what constitutes power, and what distinguishes legitimate from illegitimate power. It does so by considering the experience of Russia, a polity where experiences of the legitimacy of power and the collapse of power offer a contrast to Western experiences on which most political theory, formulated in the West, is based. The book considers power in a range of contexts – philosophy and discourse; the rule of law and its importance for economic development; the use of culture and religion as means to legitimate power; and liberalism and the reasons for its weakness in Russia. The book concludes by arguing that the Russian experience provides a useful lens through which ideas of power and legitimacy can be re-evaluated and re-interpreted, and through which the idea of "the West" as the ideal model can be questioned.

    Abstract [en]

Managing ecosystems is challenging because of the high number of stakeholders, the permeability of man-made political and jurisdictional demarcations in relation to the temporal and spatial extent of biophysical processes, and a limited understanding of complex ecosystem and societal dynamics. Given these conditions, collaborative governance is commonly put forward as the preferred means of addressing environmental problems. Under this paradigm, a deeper understanding of if, when, and how collaboration is effective, and when other means of addressing environmental problems are better suited, is needed. Interdisciplinary research on collaborative networks demonstrates that which actors get involved, with whom they collaborate, and in what ways they are tied to the structures of the ecosystems have profound implications on actors' abilities to address different types of environmental problems.

Relational Materialism2019Ingår i: Oxford Research Encyclopedias: Education, Oxford University Press, 2019Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Relational materialism was first articulated and framed within Actor Network Theory. In educational research, the concept has emerged with the growing influence of Agential Realism and New Material Feminism, and in the engagements in the “turn to materiality” and/or “turn to ontology.” A relational materialist approach to educational studies can be narrowed down to three key principles: the principle of general symmetry; the principle of material semiotics; and the principle of method. The enactment of relational materialism depends on how these principles come to work in the engagement with central educational problems, such as subjectivity, performativity and practice. Relational materialism takes the starting-point in the problems and concerns of human and material actors or agents, for whom the research can make a difference. While doing so, it acknowledges the methodological difficulties and possibilities when carefully attending simultaneously to discourse, materialities and their relations. Striving towards a methodological sensibility, the enactment of relational materialism in education research entails the emergence and creation of more and multiple methods to know the multiple realities of education. This also makes it possible for relational materialist research to become productive of new and additional educational realities that can, perhaps, make an affirmative difference to the actors or agents concerned.

Surge Under Threat: The Rapid Increase of Women on Swedish Boards of Directors2012Ingår i: Women on Corporate Boards and in Elite Management: European Trends and Policy / [ed] Fagan, C., González Menéndez, M. & Gómez Ansón, S., Palgrave Macmillan, 2012, s. 91-108Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We investigate how the representation of women in boards of Swedish firms publicly traded on the Stockholm Stock Exchange has changed since the late 1980s. Between 1990 and 2005 the share of firms with at least one woman on the board of directors increased dramatically, from ten percent to around 75 percent. During the same period the total share of women in boards has increased from two percent to 19 percent. We discuss the role of some actors and institutions relevant to this development, and analyze some consequences of it. Political threats of quota legislation seem to be the main cause of the surge. We show that following the threat of a quota, the hasty recruitment of women to boards implied that the recruitment processes of men and women became more different from each other, and also that the recruitment of women to some extent was cosmetic, that women were recruited to boards as figureheads. The Swedish case of rapidly increasing female corporate board representation following the quota threats illustrates the influence of political actors and institutions on economic life; just talk about legal institutional change appears to have induced a dramatic change in the practice of privately owned firms.
