Appunti sugli italianismi correnti nella lingua svedese. Indagini su un corpus giornalistico (gennaio-luglio 2019)2023In: Moderna Språk, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 117, no 3, p. 1-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The article provides a list of 80Italian loanwords that may be found in Swedish today, from aperitivoto villa: 30of them are direct loans from Italian, 34 have been imported through French, 16 through German, English or some other Germanic language. We also add a short list of five words formed in Swedish on the basis of an Italian loanword. Our list is based on a corpus of articles published under the category “Italien” on the online version of the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheterduring the first six months of 2019. For every headword we provide grammatical information, one or more definitions, the date of the first attestation, the first three passages where the lexical unit occurs in a certain meaning, an Italian translation of the passages, additional word forms that are not present in the quoted passages and the total number of occurrences in the corpus. Some comments follow.

Dante e la lingua italiana2021Other (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [it]

    Abstract [en]

Francesco Panigarola’s book Il predicatore, published after the author’s death in1609, was one of the most influential treatises about vernacular preaching in the seventeenthcentury. It is a common opinion that the linguistic prescriptions contained in the book chapterApparato per la seconda parte follow the path traced by Pietro Bembo and Benedetto Varchi. However, a close reading shows that Panigarola supports a new linguistic model, more open tothe needs of modern times.

Language, Rhetoric and Reformation in Bernardino Ochino’s «Prediche» ([Geneva, Jean Gérard], 1542)2022In: Giornale di Storia della Lingua Italiana, Vol. 1, no 1, p. 23-35Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Bernardino Ochino of Siena, former Vicar-General of the Capuchin Friars, converted to Protestantism and fled Italy in 1542. After reaching Geneva in the same year, he published a book of Prediche (sermons) together with other works. These sermons were addressed to the Italian people (probably with the aim of promoting the breakthrough of Protestantism in Italy) and show some influence from Calvin’s Institutio Christianae Religionis. While never preached, Ochino’s Prediche have all the features typical of the genre to which they are supposed to belong: personal deixis, questions and exhortations, and repetition of words and clauses. Moreover, Ochino’s sermons show a distinctive rhetorical feature, the frequent use of corrections. Rather than being linked to Ochino’s polemical view of the Catholic Church, this feature relates to his way of conceiving arguments, both before and after his conversion to Protestantism.

    Abstract [en]

The ≪Passione Mai≫ is a Passion narrative which harmonizes the four Gospels. The text is preserved in a fourteenth-century manuscript of the Angelo Mai Library in Bergamo (Italy), and its prologue clearly shows that it was intended for reading aloud on Good Friday, perhaps in a brotherhood of laymen. The study argues that the ≪Passione Mai≫ is a translation from Latin and analyses its language, identifying it as ancient Venetian. Nonetheless, the language shows a few non-Venetian features, together with a Latin influence.

    Abstract [en]

The contrast between a formal and an everyday language in vernacular preaching can take diverse forms. The first aspect is the relationship between Latin and vernacular: manifested either as a distinct option in favour of one of the two languages, or as the use of Latin words or phrases within a vernacular text. In the latter case the amount and function of the Latin may vary. The second aspect of the problem is the choice between literary Italian, the local vernacular or an intermediate variety. The third is the variation between a higher and a lower register within the Italian language.

    Abstract [en]

The opinions of Alessandro Manzoni and Graziadio Isaia Ascoli regarding thebest way of increasing the use of the Italian language within the newly formedItalian state diverged significantly. However, there was common ground on somepoints. First, they were more interested in what the best linguistic model wouldbe rather than in how to spread it among the people. Second, they were focusingon the educated public rather than the common people. Third, they both tendedto overestimate the success of the foreign models of linguistic unification thatthey were studying. As far as the first two points are concerned, a more pragmaticperspective was expressed by Raffaello Lambruschini, although his contributionlacked a constructive aspect.

Populism in Italy before 1992: An Analysis of Parliamentary Speeches by Guglielmo Giannini, Marco Pannella, and Umberto Bossi2023In: The New Challenges of Populist Discourses in Romance Speaking Countries / [ed] Malin Roitman; María Bernal; Christophe Premat; Françoise Sullet-Nylander, Stockholm: Stockholm University Press, 2023Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The study adopts a historical perspective, analyzing from a linguistic and rhetorical point of view the parliamentary speeches of three Italian populist politicians before April 1992, that is to say, before the fall of the traditional Italian parties that dominated the scene in the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of a new political era. The aim is to ascertain whether the formal characteristics of Italian populist discourse are completely dependent on the general political landscape and on the mass media or whether it is possible to identify any linguistic or rhetorical features that are inherently linked to Italian populism.

    Abstract [en]

This volume discusses medieval volgarizzamenti of historical, religious, and profane writings. All fourteen studies presented here recognise the fact that in the late Middle Ages, these texts were an important meeting point for elitist and popular culture which mutually stimulated each other. At the same time, different worlds of knowledge came together as history, mythology, hagiography, and biblical narration were considered to form one entity.

Presuppositions, again2019In: Philosophical Insights into Pragmatics / [ed] Piotr Stalmaszczyk, Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 2019Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Presupposition is surely one of the most debated notions in the linguistic and philosophical literature. Historically, there are two main theoretical approaches to presuppositions. According to the first one, the semantic view, presuppositions are semantic implications, that is, truth-conditional relations between propositions and statements. In this sense, presuppositions are considered properties of sentences and a presupposed proposition is a necessary condition for the truth of the presupposing statement. In the second approach, the pragmatic view, presuppositions are not properties of sentences but rather properties of speakers or of linguistic performances given a certain context of utterance. From this view, a presupposed proposition is a condition for the felicitous utterance of the presupposing statement in a given context.

Traditionally, it is assumed that semantic presuppositions differ from classical entailments, as presuppositions, unlike classical entailments, project under negation: if we compare a context of entailment to a context of presupposition, we should see that entailments, but not presuppositions, disappear under negation. This presentation aims to propose a revision of the semantic notion of presupposition. I argue that most standard cases of presuppositions are classical entailments. Moreover, I claim that all presuppositions that are classical entailments are also pragmatic presuppositions, while not all pragmatic presuppositions are also classical entailments. I contend that factive verbs offer a paradigmatic example of this distinction, as the factivity related to know is semantic, hence a classical entailment, whereas the factivity related to regret is merely pragmatic. This claim stands in contrast to Karttunen’s (1971) well-known analysis of factive verbs and his distinction between true factives (that is, emotive factives) and semifactives (that is, cognitive factives).

Testing factivity in Italian: Experimental evidence for the hypothesis that Italian sapere is ambiguous2019In: Language sciences (Oxford), ISSN 0388-0001, E-ISSN 1873-5746, Vol. 72, p. 93-103Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In linguistics and in the philosophy of language it is standardly assumed that know is a factive verb, meaning that a sentence such as X knows that p, when uttered in its positive declarative form, presupposes, in fact entails, the truth of its complement. A problem for this analysis is the fact that the verb know can be used non-factively in contexts where it is evident that the proposition expressed by the subordinate clause is not true. In order to account for non-factive uses of know, two main solutions have been advanced in the literature. Hazlett (2009, 2010, 2012) proposes that know is not semantically factive and a sentence such as X knows that p does not entail, but only pragmatically implies p. On the other hand, Tsohatzidis (2012) argues that know is lexically ambiguous between a factive and a non-factive sense: when know is used in its factive sense, a sentence such as X knows that p entails p, whereas, when know occurs in its non-factive sense, it does not.

As shown in recent works by Colonna Dahlman (2015, 2016, 2017b), the phenomenon at issue―the possibility for a speaker to use know in cases where the proposition expressed by the clause embedded under ‘knows’ is not true―is not unique to English, but occurs, for instance, also in Italian. We carried out a Truth Judgment Task to test the hypothesis that the Italian lexical item ‘sa’ (‘knows’) is ambiguous. Our findings are consistent with the lexical ambiguity hypothesis, and cannot be explained by Hazlett’s pragmatic solution.

Against the current: A minor field study on alternative media in Guatemala2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Tales of contemporary society, and who gets the right to tell them, is in this internet era something in motion as new platforms for sharing and getting information have arisen. Where traditional media through newspapers, radio or television has historically been so dominant, more and more voices can make it through as access to new platforms increase. In Latin America and in Guatemala, traditional media has been in the hands of the few and the powerful, concentrating economical and political influence that’s wielded through the power of discourse. Seeing this as hegemonic and representing a society where all are not included, alternative media seeks to counter such discourse and power by telling the untold stories by those historically without voice. This study picks up the perceptions, experiences and views of journalists and activists reshaping what we know about media production and the world, all this in a setting, a moment in time in Guatemala, when the structures of hegemonic power are shaken and put into question. By interviewing representatives of a wide scope of the alternative media sector, this thesis gives account for their aims and contributions as well as the general role and importance of alternative media in Guatemala. What it shows us is that alternative media is perceived as a force changing and adding to narratives about prior marginalized issues in the media as well as countering hegemonic power by contributing to empowerment of the citizenry. This study also show us that alternative media is perceived to open up the space for public opinion to a wider group of people in society and that it has a part to play in monitoring media power. Through these conclusions we gain a better understanding for counter hegemonic voices, ideas and movements and their part to play in society.

La función de la elipsis en la obra de Jorge Luis Borges2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The lack of literature and studies concerning the role and functionality of the ellipsis, not only as a rhetorical figure but also as a narrative tool of analysis, is a fact that deserves to be addressed, questioned and repaired. Yet the question arises how to do this. In the following thesis, the resource of the narratological method is applied, which allows us to immerse ourselves in the elliptical depths of Borges's fictionality.

The different types of ellipses (explicit, implicit, and hypothetical) present in the text were surgically extracted, and anachronies and focalizations were also indicated. Next, we moved on to the analysis and interpretation of the material.

The results obtained after the analysis were revealing and their contributions were an emulating incentive for future research. Especially in this new and paradigmatic era of hypertexts and mutants, of ghostly identities and digital avatars, the in-depth study of the ellipsis, due to its philosophical scope and, why not, indispensable for the emergence of new theories in accordance with current reality.

    Abstract [en]

Throughout 1981, the Chilean poet Elvira Hernández wrote La bandera de Chile which was published a decade later, due the political context of those years. The entire work represents a poetic effort to dismantle the traditional meaning of a symbol clearly related to the notion of national identity. This fact allows the work to be read as a cultural product that confronts the dictatorial regimen of Augusto Pinochet, constituting, therefore, a work of resistance. In addition to that, precisely because it may be understood as a literary witness of its time, La bandera de Chileshould be read as a work bent on the theme of memory. In this article I analyze this double implication and I will relate it with the very notion of postnational culture, since the work advocates a reading that deconstruct the traditional manner in which the concept of nation is discursively built

La representación del género en los manuales de enseñanza- aprendizaje de ELE/L22021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [es]

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In Brazil, diatopic language variation gains importance in the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language, due to the geographic situation of Brazil between Spanish America and as a result of its economic and cultural relations, on the one hand, with the other Latin American countries, whose official language is Spanish, and on the other hand, with Spain. This paper focuses on the study of attitudes and linguistic beliefs towards diatopic varieties of Spanish by Brazilian students of Spanish as a Foreign Language (SFL), since such attitudes and beliefs play an important role in motivating students to learn, and therefore, in their acquisition level of the foreign language. Apart from systematically studying the perceptions and attitudes regarding the diatopic varieties of Spanish, this study seeks to specifically investigate attitudes towards the forms of address in Spanish (tú, vos, usted, vosotros and ustedes), because it is a variable linguistic topic, both geographically and stylistically. Furthermore, it studies the relationship between language proficiency of the students, their academic profile and their contact with speakers of varieties of Spanish as well as the general attitudes that they have towards Hispanic varieties. Based on empirical data, the discussion considers implications for teaching of SFL in a context where Spanish is conceived as a pluricentric language. To investigate all these variables, a questionnaire was distributed to 60 Brazilian students enrolled in the Spanish courses of the Language Learning Centre at the University of Campinas, who also follow their undergraduate and posgraduate studies at the same university. Using both direct and indirect observation techniques regarding attitudes, and quantitative and qualitative analysis, the paper concludes that there is a preference for the Latin American varieties compared to the Peninsular varieties amongst Brazilian students of Spanish. These results are different from the ones presented in previous research in this area. In the case of attitudes towards the forms of address in Spanish, the results show that there is no correspondence of these attitudes with the general attitudes towards diatopic varieties, since vos, which is exclusively characteristic of the Latin American varieties, is conceived as one of the least used and most unnecessary forms in Spanish.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [es]

Modo verbal após verbos semi-factivos no português europeu escrito2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [pt]

VARIANTS OF SAPPHO'S SONGS IN ATHENAEUS' DEIPNOSOPHISTAE2016In: Journal of Hellenic Studies, ISSN 0075-4269, E-ISSN 2041-4099, Vol. 136, p. 59-72Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Sappho and her songs became popular throughout the Greek world very soon after her death, as reflected on Attic vases, in comedies and in the many references to her songs by authors of all times. One important source for her songs, especially before the discovery of the papyri at Oxyrhynchus and elsewhere, is Athenaeus' Deipnosophistae. This article presents a close analysis of three fragments of Sappho that were transmitted within this work, in order to establish the form of the fragments as they were incorporated by Athenaeus. Divergence from Sappho's original need not be the result of scribal error, but may represent a variation born in performance or active reception of the poems by Athenaeus or his source. Furthermore, the fragments demonstrate that it is insufficient to describe Athenaeus' engagement with the Lesbian dialect as atticizing. By extension, the idiosyncracies of his quotations of Sappho's songs should be reflected in editions of the Deipnosophistae.
