Rape in the Icelandic Sagas: An Insight in the Perceptions about Sexual Assaults on Women in the Old Norse World2015Inngår i: Journal of Family History, ISSN 0363-1990, E-ISSN 1552-5473, Vol. 40, nr 4, s. 431-447Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article examines the perceptions of rape and other sexual assaults against women in the Old Norse world based on the medieval Icelandic saga literature. A key starting point is the fact that the Old Norse society was an honor culture, in which honor and dishonor were concepts of supreme social importance. The Icelandic saga literature devotes very little attention to women’s own experiences of sexual assault or to how such assault affected their personal honor, despite clear indications that rape was perceived as a violation of a woman’s bodily integrity and was dishonorable to the victim. Conversely, the central theme in the depictions of rape in the saga literature is that sexual assault was regarded as highly defamatory to the woman’s male relatives, demanding blood vengeance in return. Thus, rape was considered primarily an offense against the woman’s male relatives and only secondly against the woman herself. Since sexual assaults against women could be used to dishonor men, it follows that there are examples in the sagas of how rape is used as a “weapon” during feuds. It is quite clear, however, that this was regarded as a feud crime, and rape, in most cases, was socially unacceptable and denounced.

Temperature proxy records covering the last two millennia: a tabular and visual overview2009Inngår i: Geografiska Annaler: Physical Geography, ISSN 0435-3676, Vol. 91A, nr 1, s. 11-29Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Proxy data are our only source to knowledge of temperature variability in the period prior to instrumental temperature measurements. Until recently, very few quantitative palaeotemperature records extended back a millennium or more but the number is now increasing. Here, the first systematic survey is presented, with graphic representations, of most quantitative temperature proxy data records covering the last two millennia that have been published in the peer-reviewed literature. In total, 71 series are presented together with basic essential information on each record. This overview will hopefully assist future palaeoclimatical research by facilitating an orientation among available palaeotemperature records and thus reduce the risk of missing less well-known proxy series. The records show an amplitude between maximum and minimum temperatures during the past two millennia on centennial time scales ranging from c. 0.5 to 4 °C and averaging c. 1.5–2 °C for both high and low latitudes although these variations are not always occurring synchronically. Both the Medieval Warm Period, the Little Ice Age and the 20th century warming are clearly visible in most records, whereas the Roman Warm Period and the Dark Age Cold Period are less clearly discernible.

The spatiotemporal distribution of Late Viking Age Swedish runestones: A reflection of the Christianisation process and its speed2018Inngår i: Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, ISSN 2352-409X, E-ISSN 2352-4103, Vol. 21, s. 849-861Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Late Viking Age Swedish runestones are commonly acknowledged as early Christian monuments. Using geostatistical techniques and descriptive statistics, we systematically investigate the regional-to-local spatiotemporal patterns of 1302 ornamentally dated Swedish runestones regarding the timing and speed of the Christianisation process. After quantitative geostatistical analyses of the age distribution patterns of Swedish runestones, we evaluate whether the observed patterns correspond to the pace and pattern of Christianisation, as represented by the presence of mission bishoprics, early church sites, late pagan grave sites and royal estates. We identify seven distinct age groups of runestones and statistically significant regional-to-local spatiotemporal differences in the age and age spread of runestones. The oldest runestones, with the smallest age spread, are found in south-western medieval Sweden, and the youngest, as well as the largest age spread, in the north-east, respectively. We find that runestones are significantly older close to early ecclesiastical sites, regardless of the analytical level, and significantly younger near to late pagan graves. The results obtained are inconclusive as to whether runestones are older near royal estates. Our results support that the spatiotemporal patterns of runestone sites mirror the timing of the Christianisation process and that geostatistical approaches to larger archaeological or historical data sets can add new dimensions to the understanding of the spatial dimensions of past societal changes.

Urban green commons: Insights on urban common property systems2013Inngår i: Global Environmental Change, ISSN 0959-3780, E-ISSN 1872-9495, Vol. 23, nr 5, s. 1039-1051Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper is to shed new light on urban common property systems. We deal with urban commons in relation to urban green-space management, referring to them as urban green commons. Applying a property-rights analytic perspective, we synthesize information on urban green commons from three case-study regions in Sweden, Germany, and South Africa, and elaborate on their role for biodiversity conservation in urban settings, with a focus on business sites. Cases cover both formally established types of urban green commons and bottom-up emerged community-managed habitats. As our review demonstrates, the right to actively manage urban green space is a key characteristic of urban green commons whether ownership to land is in the private, public, the club realm domain, or constitutes a hybrid of these. We discuss the important linkages among urban common property systems, social–ecological learning, and management of ecosystem services and biodiversity. Several benefits can be associated with urban green commons, such as a reduction of costs for ecosystem management and as designs for reconnecting city-inhabitants to the biosphere. The emergence of urban green commons appears closely linked to dealing with societal crises and for reorganizing cities; hence, they play a key role in transforming cities toward more socially and ecologically benign environments. While a range of political questions circumscribe the feasibility of urban green commons, we discuss their usefulness in management of different types of urban habitats, their political justification and limitation, their potential for improved biodiversity conservation, and conditions for their emergence. We conclude by postulating some general policy advice.

The History (1620-2003) of Land Use, People and Livestock, and the Relationship to Present Plant Species Diversity in a Rural Landscape in Sweden2006Inngår i: Environment and History, ISSN 0967-3407, E-ISSN 1752-7023, Vol. 12, s. 191-212Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The traditional agriculture in Europe favoured numerous plant and animal species that are presently declining. Integrated studies based on various sources are needed in order to unravel the complex relationships between changing landscapes and biological diversity. The objectives of this study were to describe changes in land use during c. 350 years in a Swedish agricultural landscape in relation to changes in human population and livestock, and to analyse relationships between historical land use and present-day plant species diversity. There were only minor long-term changes in land use, population and livestock between 1640 and 1854 in the two studied hamlets, but detailed data 1620-41 showed a large short-term fluctuation in livestock numbers. After 1854 larger changes took place. Grasslands were cultivated and livestock composition changed. After 1932, livestock number decreased and most of the former grazed outland (areas located outside the fenced infields) turned into forest by natural succession. 7 per cent of the study area is still grazed semi-natural grassland. The highest plant species richness is today found on semi-natural grassland with a long continuity of grazing. The distribution of five target species suggests that previous land use still has an important effect today. The majority of their occurrences are remnant populations located in previous outland pastures which are today forests.

Different antisemitisms On three distinct forms of antisemitism in contemporary Europe With special focus on Sweden2016Inngår i: Nordisk judaistik - Scandinavian Jewish Studies, ISSN 0348-1646, Vol. 27, nr 2, s. 61-81Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article studies eight European countries, investigating how the level of antisemitism as registered in national populations relates to the perception of antisemitism by the Jewish population in the same country.(1) Furthermore, the article empirically identifies distinct aspects of antisemitism, deconstructing the concept of antisemitism and breaking it up into three kinds of empirically differently based and composed antisemitisms (note the plural!): classic antisemitism, Israel-derived antisemitism and Enlightenment-based antisemitism. The article also elaborates on some more general implications for the understanding of the character of antisemitism in contemporary Europe, and based on that, presents some perspectives on the development of the three distinct antisemitisms in contemporary Europe.

Das Geschäft mit Nachrichten: Ein barocker Markt für soziale Ressourcen2018Bok (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [de]

Jahrhundert.

    Abstract [en]

The following essay examines current research on the history of communications in the so-called early modern era, which still reiterate a Whig approach to media history. Based on a definition of news and its social functions, a different understanding of the contemporary news market is proposed. This market can not be unterstood properly on the basis of notions of a print-based public sphere or media systems. News was and is an investment in social relationships that resulted in forms of participation. They are also a means of participation in contemporaneity, which was part of the lifestyle of functional elites. The understanding of the news market in the seventeenth century outlined here not only questions the periodization of early modern times and related ideas about the so-called modernity, especially within the field of the history of communication. It also offers a different understanding of the social functions of news with repercussions for the contemporary news market.

    Abstract [en]

The understanding of early modern terminology is often complicated due to problems of translation as well as changes in the use of words over the last centuries. Another problem is that the use of these terms in historical analysis inevitably refers to the historian’s contemporary understanding of his own time, where these terms still exist. Ambiguities and contradictions are thus not only an expression for our problems to historicize the terms. The historian himself needs to rethink his modernity – and find new terms for himself.
