Una promesa imposible: Fronteras geográficas y corporales en Boca de lobo, de Sergio Chejfec2017Ingår i: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 111, nr 1, s. 156-172Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [es]

Boca de lobo (Chejfec 2009) speculates on the transgression of physical and imaginary borders, both at a geographical and corporal level. Taking the novel's argument as a starting point, the objective of this essay is to analyze the border transgressions occurring both at the geographical and corporeal space. Once these representations are identified, I propose to evaluate the possible correlation drawn by the narrator between one space and the other, that is: to interpret the movements through physical and imaginary boundaries, as to identify the extent to which subjectivities can be affected by space.

Unidentified Sermons Attributed to Augustinus in the Lectionarium Placentinum: Reception and Liturgical Use of Augustine in a Twelfth-Century Lectionary for the Divine Office2017Ingår i: Praedicatio Patrum: Studies on Preaching in Late Antique North Africa / [ed] Gert Partoens, Anthony Dupont, Shari Boodts, Turnhout: Brepols, 2017, s. 169-182Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

As exegesis of the Gospel readings, sermons, homelies and tractatus of the church fathers play an important pastoral part in the medieval mass. Moreover, such texts appear as lessons to be read at Matins of the divine office like they do in the 12th century Lectionarium Placentinum. A presentation of the two parts of this medieval lectionary (Temporale and Sanctorale) made for the cathedral of Piacenza as well as its contents of feasts, saints and texts for the liturgical year. The main focus will be on the Temporale with its more than 140 feasts with Gospel incipits and ca. 335 texts, the major part of which is attributed to the Big Four: Ambrose, Augustine, Leo Magnus and Gregory the Great. The second focus on the ca. 140 texts attributed to Augustine. Various authentic sermons and selected parts of tractatus in euangelium Iohannis constitute the major part of Augustine’s ”contribution” to the Temporale, but of greater interest for the conference will probably be the ones attributed to Augustine but now considered to be written by others and the ones attributed to other authors but now considered to be Augustinian texts. Finally, I present some texts attributed to Augustine which I have not been able to identify yet.

    Abstract [fr]

Welfare governmentalities: pastoralism and parties' youth wings in Mexico2017Ingår i: International journal of sociology and social policy, ISSN 0144-333X, E-ISSN 1758-6720, Vol. 37, nr 13-14, s. 808-822Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose - From a micro-macro perspective, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the welfare-related criteria reported by the heads of political parties' youth wings in Mexico, the implicit and explicit religious beliefs that inform some of those criteria and the (Foucauldian) pastoral genealogy of both the criteria and beliefs.

Design/methodology/approach - The paper draws on qualitative data from semi-structured interviews with a group of 32 heads of three political parties' youth wings in Mexico. The interpretation of the data builds on a previous genealogical analysis of Foucauldian pastoralism in colonial Mexico.

Findings - The respondents' criteria on a state that should aim at procuring material-spiritual and material-transcendental types of well-being and politics as help, are partly informed by religious values. Such criteria and religious values have been partly constructed out of a pastoralism which was deployed during the Spanish colonial regime and included temporal and spiritual teleologies of government and the practice of charity as (self-) governmental technique.

Originality/value - The literature on welfare/social policies of Latin American countries like Mexico tends not to problematize issues of secularity other than the religions' undesirable intrusions in the political field. Governmentality studies also tend to bypass Foucault's discussion of pastoralism. An empirical study of the pastoral genealogy of contemporary political rationalities in a constitutionally secular country such as Mexico can prompt further research on the gaps above and comparative analyses of pastoral and welfare governmentalities across Latin American and other world regions.

Who killed whom? A comparison of political discussions about the genocide of 1915 in France and Sweden2017Ingår i: Let them not return: Sayfo: the genocide of the Assyrian, Syriac, and Chaldean Christians in the Ottoman Empire / [ed] David Gaunt, Naures Atto, Soner Onder Barthoma, New York: Berghahn Books, 2017, s. 233-253Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The principal goal of this chapter is to understand how the geno-cide issue has been dealt with in the political discussions held in two different national traditions: France and Sweden. The idea is to com-pare two national narratives on the genocide. I shall adopt a discursive methodology (Thornborrow and Coates 2005: 6), analysing how repre-sentatives in both countries put this issue on the political agenda. Who killed whom? Who is the aggressor and who the victim? What categories do these political debates produce in these historical events? What are the main terms used in both national political debates? The controversy gives an unparalleled opportunity to highlight a historical question. The material is composed of legislative texts that illustrate the state of the political debates on this question. Both countries experienced a wave of immigration due to the events of 1915. The analysis of parliamentary texts is all the more important as it reveals the construction of new categories to qualify what happened.

A journey without destination: the meaningless experience of migration in Dirty Feet of Edem Awumey2016Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

If Edem Awumey can be classified as a writer belonging to the ”migrant literature” in Canada, his work is overwhelmed with characters wandering without knowing where they go. It is the case in one of his novels  entitled Dirty Feet (Les Pieds Sales in French). According to Daniel Chartier, ”migrant writing” – unlike ethnic literature, immigration or immigrant literature – can be defined thematically by hybridity and by its frequent use of autobiography. The genre of migrant literature refers to literature from authors who are between two cultures and who focus on the journey, the odyssée. The story of the journey is the central part of this literary genre as it is a composition of cultural fragments. The aim of the presentation is to illustrate the characteristics of this genre through the novel of Edem Awumey, Les Pieds Sales. How are the characters and the locations presented in the novel? The analysis will be done with the help of Memory studies that primarily focus on the symbolic relevance of objects, characters and places.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the article is to analyze the evolution of a radical left group in France that created a scission inside theFourth International after World War II. The group founded a review Socialisme ou Barbarie that criticizedMarxism and the Trotskyist interpretation of the status of the USSR. The rigorous description of this review revealsthe mixture of strong theoretical views on bureaucratic societies and empirical investigations of reactions againstthose societies. The hypothesis is that this group failed to be a new political force. As a matter of fact, is it possibleto depict the evolution of Socialisme ou Barbarie as an investigative journalism based on a strong political andphilosophical theory?

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [pt]

Autonomy, Democracy and Social Creativity: The Case of Castoriadis’ Work2016Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Cornelius Castoriadis is well-known for his manifesto against bureaucratic societies, published by the radical left group Socialisme ou Barbarie in 1948. He developed an trenchant critique of bureaucratic societies in the Cold War. According to him, the western bureaucracies were fragmented, as these societies still had fundamental values, whereas bureaucracies adopted a total form in the East. Socialisme ou Barbarie was marginal and disappeared just before the events of May 1968. While Castoriadis sought to define his theory of autonomy in a philosophical way, he also proposed a new aesthetics based on the idea of creativity. What are the characteristics of this social creativity according to Castoriadis? My hypothesis is that the last work of Castoriadis proposed the outlines of an aesthetics of autonomy. I will examine the corpus of references that Castoriadis used to qualify this creative force specific to autonomous societies.

Between opportunities and threats – an analysis of Brazilian Landless Workers’ movement experiences with new media technologies2016Ingår i: OBS - Observatorio, ISSN 1646-5954, E-ISSN 1646-5954Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Recent discussions and research about the uses of digital social media platforms by social movements and protest organizations have raised questions about threats and challenges represented by these technologies. There is also a debate on whether digital social media platforms can contribute to establish and strengthen long-standing oppositional groups and structural change. In this context, this article analyses how the Brazilian Landless Workers Movement (MST) experiences and views the use of digital social media platforms in its communicative processes. Based on interviews and observations, the article shows how MST militants present ambivalent views towards platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and towards the dynamics of digital communication. Conclusions point that the main concern is threat to the organic collective character of the movement posed by individualistic digital social media platforms. Different from contemporary protest organisations, MST sees a clear separation between the movement and its media. The goal is to appropriate of and control media technologies, which brings many difficulties when dealing with digital social media platforms.

Can we have a new democratic enlightenment?: Rousseau´s ideas in contemporary societies and prospects of modern direct democracy2016Konferensbidrag (Övrig (populärvetenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

”The sovereign cannot be represented, divided or broken up in anyway” wrote Rousseau in The Social Contract. Rousseau is often seen as a reference for a political system characterized by direct democratic mechanisms. At the same time, the French republican tradition considered him as a source of inspiration with the definition of the general interest. The presentation will be a dialogue between Bruno Kaufmann and Christophe Premat about the modern concepts of Rousseau´s works. Rousseau referred to provinces where democratic tools were experienced such as Corsica or Poland. The first part of the presentation will sketch a theoretical background of Rousseau´s thought whereas the second part will introduce the hidden heritage of Rousseau by comparing his views on direct democratic tools with modern political systems. How can we get back to empowered citizens? Do we need to have a new democratic revolution to avoid the tendency to transfer sovereignty to a small group of people acting for the others?

Clash of the Corsicans: Presumed Autonomy in Mateo Falcone by Prosper Mérimée2016Ingår i: Presumed Autonomy: May 10-13, Stockholm University, All Abstracts, 2016, s. 21-22Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In my paper, I will try to clarify different types of (mostly presumed) autonomy, on a textual, fictional and communicational level in Mateo Falcone, the story of a Corsican father who shoots his own son after the latter, in exchange for a silver watch, has betrayed a bandit that he promised to hide. The story relates to presumed autonomy on several levels. Firstly, the concrete setting displays specific spaces in which autonomy is (or is not) granted: the house of Mateo Falcone, an autonomous space in which the tacit contract of local traditions should overrule the claims of the legal institution; secondly, kinship bonds prompts Fortunato to count on a presumed autonomy for himself, considering himself untouchable as he is “the son of Mateo Falcone”; thirdly, the description of an exotic and savage Corsica creates an image of an autonomous region, governed by its own rules, outside civilization; fourthly, by means of different devices Mérimée takes an ironic stand, which detaches him from the story, thus creating an autonomous work, separated from the author, an interesting position in the late 1820’s with regard to traditional assumptions concerning the relationship between author and narrator.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

The way the theme of the oppressor is inscribed in El lugar perdido by the Argentinian Norma Huidobro is analized based on Angenot´s social discourse theory. It is argued that the social discourse about the oppressor enters El lugar perdido by the discourse of gender. The way in which the discourse of gender is absorbed by the novel and inscribed in it functions as a possible way to humanize the figure of the repressor and, ultimately, as an attempt to understand it in a different way than other social discourses, even aesthetic ones, have done until now.

    Abstract [es]

Exploring Inclusive Ethnography as a Methodology to Account for Multiple Experiences2016Ingår i: Innovative methods in media and communication research / [ed] Sebastian Kubitschko, Anne Kaun, Cham, Switzerland: Springer Publishing Company, 2016, s. 189-205Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Sartoretto shows the necessity of ethnography inspired methodologies that are attentive to communication as an open-ended process to better understand media related practices. The chapter highlights the ways multimedia ethnographic fieldwork is useful to inform research that seeks to understand realities in transitional and unequal societies outside the Euro-American context. Sartoretto also explicates that a too strong focus on analyzing the significances for social action of new technologies that are unequally available across different groups tends to give an eschewed view of the democratizing potentials of these technologies. By focusing on the experiences of a marginalized group in Brazil that is geographically distant from urban centers and does not have access to the most advanced technologies, the chapter broadens the horizons of analysis of the interplay between social action and media.

    Abstract [en]

The current thesis is based on four individual studies which aim to account for the expression of motion events (ME) in Spanish and Swedish as first languages (L1), in Swedish as a second language (L2), and in Spanish as a heritage language (SHL). The data, resulting from audio-recordings of different sorts of stimuli, have been analyzed with special focus on (1) the most common structures used for referring to various types of ME, (2) the types and amount of information provided by the participants, in particular as regards the semantic components Path, Manner and Ground, and (3) grammatical aspect and types of syntactic structures resorted to, including the correlation between the two latter factors and speakers’ discursive preferences.

Study 1 sets out to explore how Spanish and Swedish native speakers convey information about motion. The results show that the Swedish L1 speakers produced a wider range of descriptions concerning Manner and Path than the Spanish L1 speakers; furthermore, both groups delivered detailed Ground descriptions, although the Swedish native speakers expressed final destinations (endpoints) of ME to a greater extent.

Study 2 aims to investigate to what extent Swedish L1 patterns for motion encoding are still at play in the acquisition of Spanish L2 even at advanced stages of L2 acquisition. The results show that the learner group used a larger amount of Path particles and Ground adjuncts (in particular those referring to endpoints) than did the Spanish natives; this finding supports the claim that L2 learners rely on the lexicalization patterns of their L1 when describing ME in an L2. As for Manner, the L2 speakers were found to express this component mainly outside the verb, and to deliver more information about Manner than the Spanish natives.

Study 3 addresses the construal of ME in Swedish speakers of L2 Spanish, in particular concerning the encoding of motion endpoints and Manner of motion. The results show that the Swedish learners of Spanish exhibited the same, high frequencies of endpoint marking as did their monolingual Swedish peers, thus deviating from the Spanish native pattern. Moreover, the L2 speakers used the same amount of Manner verbs as did the Spanish natives but tended consistently to provide additional Manner information in periphrastic constructions.

Finally, Study 4 sets out to analyze the ways in which L1 Spanish/L2 Swedish early and late bilinguals express ME in SHL. The aim is to show in which ways and to what extent the typological patterns for motion encoding in the L2 may impact on motion encoding in the L1 with regard to three parameters: (1) age of onset (AO) of the acquisition of L2, (2) length of residence (LoR) in the L2 environment and (3) contact level with the L1 (CL). The focus data, consisting of oral re-tellings produced by the bilinguals, were compared to analogous data produced by two control groups (native speakers of Spanish and Swedish) in order to analyze conflation patterns regarding Manner, Path and Ground information. The analysis points to the conclusion that both the individuals’ AO of L2 acquisition and their LoR in the L2 environment have affected their L1 conceptualization patterns while their CL plays a subordinate role.

In summary, the findings lend support to the idea that the habitual conceptualization of events in the L1 influences L2 acquisition; conversely, the conceptual patterns of the L2 have an impact on L1 usage in bilinguals, especially in combination with an early AO and a long LoR.

Fables of Phaedrus Recycled in Medieval Latin Literature2016Ingår i: Fiction and Figuration in High and Late Medieval Literature / [ed] Marianne Pade, Anders Cullhed, Anders Hallengren, Brian Møller Jensen, Roma: Quasar, 2016, s. 83-92Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Recycling appears an appropriateterm to describe a large part of pre-modernliterary activities in Latin and Greek. The subject of the paper is the recycling of fables of the Roman poet Phaedrus, who translated prose fables of the Greek author Aesop into Latin verse. As examples of this literary process are investigated the post-millennial collections of the abbot Ademar of Chabannes(ca. 1030) and the Dominican monk Vincent of Beauvais in his encyclopaedic work Speculum maius (1247-1259). To illustrate recycling of single fables, some medieval versions of Phaedrus III.12 'Pullus ad margaritam' and Phaedrus I.1 'Lupus et agnus' are analysed.

Greeks and Some Romans on the Pyramids2016Ingår i: The pyramids: between life and death: Proceedings of the workshop held at Uppsala University, May 31st to June 1st., 2012 / [ed] Irmgard Hein, Nils Billing, Erika Meyer-Dietrich, Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis , 2016, s. 13-25Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is intended as a straightforward, light-hearted survey of passages in Greek literature dealing with the pyramids from Herodotus to late antiquity; it refers also to various passages in Latin imperial authors. The chief question is: Did the Greeks and Romans view the pyramids differently than we do today? It turns out that fascination for the size and construction of the pyramids is something common to all times, but less so their great antiquity. Scientific interest in the pyramids from mathematicians and engineers is not in evidence among Greek scientific authors, somewhat surprisingly. The pyramids also carried certain negative connotations for Greeks and Romans that are not common today, primarily, connotations of extravagant and useless opulence as well as of tyrannical oppression, though the latter lives on somewhat. The pyramids as a touted tourist attraction remain common to Greek antiquity and our contemporary culture.

Introducing Italy, 1948–1968: the importance of symbolic capital and position of literary mediators in the semiperiphery2016Ingår i: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 110, s. 75-107Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the impact of two literary mediators – Martha Larsson and Anders Österling – both of whom introduced Italian literature in Sweden during the second half of the 20th century. These mediators are compared to each other with regard to their social background, habitus and position in the literary field, all elements included in their symbolic capital. By mapping out which literary texts and authors they actually introduced in the period 1948–1968, with special attention given to crucial factors such as genre and gender, the results show that their selections had different characters. While Larsson introduced contemporary authors who were highly regarded in Italy at the time, and more closely related to what Bourdieu (1993) described as the autonomous pole, Österling mainly focused on authors closer to the heteronomous pole. Following Broomans’ (2009) six-phase model of cultural transfer, the study analyzes whether their introductions had a direct effect on publication, and what strategies they used in order to introduce new Italian authorships to a Swedish audience. Drawing upon Bourdieu and (1990) and Casanova (2002), it is also argued that both mediators introduced Italian literature in order to gain symbolic capital and strengthen their positions in the Swedish literary field.

    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [en]

The overall aim of this study is to explore how people who have experienced events in the past re-contextualize these same events in the present. We analyse the discourse of the public trial in 1985 against the members of the first three Argentine military juntas in the most recent dictatorship in Argentina (1976-1983). The study focuses on the discursive construction of civil responsibility. We examine the discourses of the witnesses that were called to testify at the trial by the defence attorneys of the accused Jorge Rafael Videla and Roberto Eduardo Viola, former de facto presidents of Argentina. The analysed testimonies concerned a specific event during the dictatorship, namely the meetings between the military junta and civil actors that were held in 1979 and 1980 with the declared purpose to create political dialogue between the military and selected parts of the civil society. Prior to the trial, these political dialogue meetings had not been considered to be particularly important in the history of the dictatorship, but the testimonies at the trial draw attention to the responsibility of civil actors in the crimes committed during the military dictatorship. In this study we investigate this theme in a novel way, focusing on the discursive tools used by civilians at the trial to explain their involvement in the dictatorship. We adopt the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL).

To establish relationships between social and linguistic aspects, we include the concepts of intertextuality, discursive strategies, appraisal and legitimation. The main research questions are: 1) How do people represent linguistically a historical event when they find themselves in a new historical context? 1a) What discursive representation of the latest Argentinean dictatorship are made by the participants (witnesses, judge, defence and prosecutor) in the trial against the military junta leaders in 1985?; 1b) What intertextual influences are present in the interactants’ discourses during the interrogations, and in what way do these discourses contribute to legitimise the historical past?; 1c) What language resources do the civilian witnesses use to represent the Armed Forces and the armed rebel groups)? and 2) In what way do the witnesses reconstruct their role in the political dialogue meetings, or more specifically, what linguistic resources do the witnesses use to represent themselves in relation to the responsibility of civilians in the military dictatorship?

The results show that the witnesses, in general, interpreted the recent past of Argentina using discourses that on the one hand condemned the violence caused by the armed rebel groups and on the other hand justified the interference of the Armed Forces. These discourses were used in the construction of a positive identity of both the witnesses as individuals and the institutions to which they belonged. Furthermore, their discourses legitimized their own actions, when these supported the Armed Forces in their “war on subversion”. The overwhelming majority of the witnesses tried to evade the questions meant to clarify their responsibility on the events of the dictatorship. Most of the witnesses, during the interrogation tried to find discursive strategies and linguistic resources that could hide their support to the Armed Forces during the regime and they did not reveal clearly their position regarding the military illegal actions during the dictatorship.

LA EXPANSIÓN DE LAS UNIVERSIDADES POPULARES EN FRANCIA(1898-1914)2016Ingår i: FORMAS Y ESPACIOS DE LA EDUCACIÓN POPULAR EN LA EUROPA MEDITERRANEA: Siglos XIX Y XX / [ed] Guereña Jean-Louis, Tiana Ferrer Alejandro, Madrid: Casa de Velasquez , 2016, s. 209-228Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [es]

    Abstract [fr]
