Trust chains in public sector organizations and their significance for work unit performance and employee turnover intention2024In: International Public Management Journal, ISSN 1096-7494, E-ISSN 1559-3169Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, we propose that the concept of trust chains can be used to combine two influential traditions in organizational theory - Luhmann ' s work on vertical trust and Putnam ' s ideas on horizontal trust as a collective asset. Trust chains are then studied empirically by exploring how trust is assessed in the relationships between the employees in work units, the immediate managers, and the top management, including politicians and expert functions in a municipal organization. Aggregated data from questionnaires completed by 1,579 employees and their first-line managers in a Swedish municipality resulted in 126 work units. Cluster analysis identified five different configurations of trust chains with convergent and criterion validity. A solid trust chain with reciprocal links between employees in work units via layers of managers to the top management is clearly the most beneficial situation, while other configurations represent a variety of breaches, with less beneficial outcomes in terms of performance and turnover intentions.

Kvinnors företagande: arbetsmarknadsbeteende och organisatorisk lösning2007Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

FAKTISK LÖN, LÖNERÄTTVISA OCH ATTITYD TILL INDIVIDUELL LÖNESÄTTNING SOM PREDIKTORER FÖR SJUKSKÖTERSKORS LÖNETILLFREDSSTÄLLELSE2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this qualitative study in the form of seven semi-structured interviews was to investigate how different actors in the Swedish society work to support their clients towards a positive future. The intention was to highlight the needs of clients, how well those needs match the support the actors offer and to investigate whether this support has similarities with the way in which career counselors are working. The results show that clients' needs are complex but largely involves support in creating a better self-image and support regarding collaboration between different actors. The support offered by the actors matches those needs well. The support offered also has great similarities with the way in which career counselors are working. It was therefore concluded that these professionals have the skills necessary to bolster the actors' clients towards a positive future.

Kvalifikationskravet: Vem får arbeta som elevassistent?2015Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Om arbetslivets automatisering: En diskursanalys2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this work was to study, with the help of discourse analysis/way to talk about working life, future changes, more specific predictions about the working life of automation. The method has been critical discourse analysis and discourse analytical concepts taken from Foucault.

The focus of our analysis has been an established report which estimates that 53 percent of the jobs on the Swedish labor market can be automated within 20 years. The result shows that the way to talk about the future of automated labor market in terms of risk, in terms of competition between countries and groups and as a force of nature creates an order of discourse of the future of automated labor. Some of the conclusions of our work demonstrates a way to look at working life automation as something associated with risk, something that threatens the jobs on the Swedish labor market and something that occur without having any active agent.

Visualisations of Relatonics: A Tool to Support Change in the Organising of Work?2014In: Impact of Emerging Digital Technologies on Leadership in Global Business / [ed] Peter A. C. Smith, Tom Cockburn, Hersey: IGI Global, 2014, p. 166-182Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter is based on theorising and analysis from an ongoing research and development project exploring the use of visualisations in task-based development, specifically the potential of new types of organisational images that may support understanding about work-integrated learning. Thus, the aim of the chapter is to explore the possibilities of visualising work-integrated competence networks-here referred to as relatonics-and contribute to the understanding of how such visualisations can support efforts of organising change when organisational boundary-crossing cooperation is needed for a significant task. A conclusion is that images representing relatonic can be utilised to identify areas with a developmental need and, in this way, are a resource to make more knowledgeable interventions and enable a relatonic to emerge in certain directions.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The lack of labor in the tech industry contributes to a struggle among tech-recruiters for tech-talent. Tech recruitment often differs from more traditional recruitment procedures. Instead of a way of working where the applicant submits an application, tech-recruiters need to use outreach methods. The interest in knowledge in this thesis is to study recruitment and especially the relationship between recruiters and talent from a learning perspective. The study complements previous studies because it empirically studies both tech-recruiters and tech-talents experiences of recruitment processes. Using a situated perspective on learning, as well as theories of socialization, identity dilemmas, communicative dilemmas and career processes, the study have focused on learning, socialization and career processes in tech recruitment. The study has a qualitative approach and has used a cross-sectional design, where eight semi-structured interviews have been conducted with professional tech-recruiters and tech-talents from seven organizations. The findings show that tech-recruiters and tech-talents have moved in their careers to get better conditions for learning. In the career of tech-recruiters, their first job in tech-recruitment proved to have contributed with basic knowledge of the profession. Their first job also seems to be central to staying in the recruitment profession because it has aroused an interest and understanding among the recruiters for technology and recruitment. The findings showed that the tech-talents from the beginning of their careers had a skills development strategy that has been to work at companies where they can perform qualitative tasks and with senior colleagues. The findings showed that both tech-recruiters and the tech-talents continued their career journey and experienced better conditions for learning in step with their career shifts. A central part of the findings also showed that recruiters and talents experience different dilemmas linked to the recruitment process and the relationship to each other, which are: the contact dilemma, the speed and power dilemma and the assessment dilemma.

Hemtjänstpersonals upplevelser av arbetsrelaterad motivation2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Morgondagens attraktiva arbetsgivare i "det nya normala": En kvalitativ undersökning bland IT-anställda2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

distansarbete.

    arbetsgivares attraktionskraft.

Att vara en inkluderande ledare på arbetsplatsen: En kvalitativ intervjustudie om hur åtta ledare agerar i praktiken för att uppnå inkludering av sina medarbetare2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Inclusive leadership is relatively new within leadership research and there is still some confusion about how this should be realized and practiced in working life. The purpose of this study is to examine how eight leaders from different companies define inclusive leadership and how they act in practice to achieve inclusion of their employees in the workplace. The study is conducted with semi-structured interviews of qualitative research design. Eight leaders with different professional positions, who work at different companies in various industries, participate in the survey. The interviews were recorded, transcribed and then analyzed with thematic analysis. From the thematic analysis, three themes were identified which were labeled as the leaders definition and practice of inclusive leadership, inclusive leadership´s contribution to the workplace and obstacles to exercising inclusive leadership. Furthermore, the ideological nature of the research field and how it affects its discourse as well as our own thesis are discussed. The study concludes that the leaders definition of inclusive leadership is based on interpersonal relationships, where the leader bears a primary responsibility for creating and nurturing them. This can be accomplished by listening, being responsive and asking for feedback from their employees, as well as allowing them to be involved in decision making and allowing them to be personal and unique in the workplace. By practicing inclusive leadership and treating employees in this way, an inclusive climate is created, which is characterized as a safe work environment where all employees are allowed to speak and where different thoughts and opinions are encouraged.

    Abstract [sv]

    Inflytande över arbetstiden och sjuknärvaro/sjukfrånvaro2013In: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv, ISSN 1400-9692, E-ISSN 2002-343X, Vol. 19, no 4, p. 87-99Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Flexibla arbetstider blir allt vanligare.

Trajectories of Antidepressant Medication before and after the Onset of Unemployment by Subsequent Employment Experience2017In: PLOS ONE, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 12, no 1, article id e0169652Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background The unemployed more often suffer from depression than the employed. We examined whether mental health deterioration occurs already before unemployment implicating health selection, or whether it mostly occurs after becoming exposed to the experience rendering causal explanations more likely. Methods We used nationally representative Finnish register data to examine changes in depressive morbidity as measured by antidepressant medication in 1995-2009 over four years before and since a new onset of unemployment (N = 28 000) at the age of 30-60 compared to the employed (N = 124 136). We examined separately those who became continuously long-term unemployed, intermittently unemployed and unemployed with eventual re-employment in the second, third or fourth year since the year of onset. Annual repeated measurements were analysed using generalised estimation equations. Results Among the employed antidepressant medication increased slowly but steadily over the study period and it was mainly at a lower level than among the unemployed. In the four years leading to unemployment there was excess increase in medication that was generally stronger among those with longer duration of the eventual unemployment experience. During unemployment medication decreased in all groups except among the intermittently unemployed. By the first year of re-employment antidepressant medication reached a level similar to that among the employed and afterwards followed no consistent trend. Conclusions The associations of unemployment and re-employment with depressive morbidity appear to be largely driven by health selection. The question of potential causal associations remains unresolved for intermittent unemployment in particular.

Konsten att behålla personal - Psykologiska kontraktets och rättvisans betydelse för intention till uppsägning2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Totalt deltog 111 heltidsanställda i studien.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Rock bands are foundational for modern day music life. These small groups provide well-being and self-fulfillment to its members, as well as fuel for the cultural life and the increasingly highlighted creative industries. Rock bands, however, are particularly difficult to organize. Bands face a range of challenges in keeping together and developing as a group.

The aim of this doctoral thesis is to develop knowledge on rock band formation and development over time. Based in the discipline of education, the thesis mainly contributes to the fields of organization studies, social theories of learning, and music and cultural life research.

The thesis uses the theory of situated learning to explore rock band formation and development. The methodology is qualitative and ethnographic, and the research design builds on three studies: an interview study with three rock bands and two case studies. All five bands are Swedish and have found different degrees of success and popularity.

The thesis investigates band activities and courses of events, band members’ identities, and challenges faced. The findings indicate that a rock band’s activities shift between a production mode – i.e. highly productive times associated with public performances, record releases and marketing, and behind the scenes processes of creating, recording and planning – and a contrasting less active hibernation mode without bigger public projects or goals. The amount of time spent in production mode depends on the band’s degree of “membership” in the music industry. Moreover, a band member forms and actualizes identities of colleague, creator, entrepreneur, friend, hobbyist and professional, in differing combinations, situations and modes. Furthermore, the members’ most significant challenges relate to identity dilemmas.

Based on these findings, the thesis formulates a model for a rock band’s learning trajectory and argues that a band may develop as it approaches, or becomes a more central member in, the music industry. This development demands increased public success and organizational ability: the band members’ ability to form business-oriented practices, to participate uniformly in an overarching community of practice, and to be flexible as they must identify with, and ascribe meaning to, a variety of activities in different and sometimes contradictory ways.

The thesis concludes that the challenges of persistence as a rock band or similar group relates chiefly to group member difficulties in identifying with different activities and situations that are necessary to sustain and develop as a collective. Eventually, individual members tend to handle the experience of uncertainty and ambivalence by holding on to one singular identity, which may prevent group development, foster intra- and interpersonal tensions, and ultimately can lead to significant conflicts and/or a band’s breakup.

Från källarband till småföretag: kreativitet och entreprenörskap i popband2018In: Den lärande organisationen 2.0 / [ed] Otto Granberg; Jon Ohlsson, Lund: Studentlitteratur AB, 2018, p. 99-127Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Productivity consequences of workforce ageing - Stagnation or a Horndal effect?2005Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Data linking the production of value-added at the plant level to the individual employees provide an opportunity to deepen the understanding of how the labor force composition relates to productivity performance. In view of the anticipated aging of the workforce in industrialised economies a body of research has emerged that indicate that individual productivity has a more pronounced hump-shape than the wage profile. This paper studies these issues by examining the composition of the workforce at the plant level in relation to the productivity performance of the plants. Our data cover the Swedish mining and manufacturing industries 1985-1996. The fact that older workers selectively work with older capital may have biased results found in the literature. Endogeneity of workforce composition poses serious estimation problems, but our attempts to cope with these problems tend to indicate that biases in general go in the direction that productivity of the young is overestimated and the productivity of the old is underestimated.

"Ont i magen, ingen koll, långt bort": En studie om hur medarbetare upplever ett pensionsmöte2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Arbetsplatsmöten: En möjlig arena för kollektivt lärande2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A lot of focus today is on finding effective ways to conduct meetings, but many employees still experience that meetings can feel meaningless and take time from more important tasks. This could be because organizations want to conduct meetings that are effective but at the same time contribute to business development. The purpose of our study is to create an understanding of the conditions for collective learning during workplace meetings. The results of the study have been analyzed and discussed based on a theory of collective learning. The qualitative case study has been conducted in an organization during their workplace meetings using observations and interviews with the participants. The study is based on five observations and nine interviews. The result shows three different types of interactions that occur during workplace meetings, which are single, developed and complex interactions. The result also shows two conditions that affect the interaction, the purpose of the meeting and the leadership at the workplace meeting.

Outdoor Office Work – hur funkar det?2019In: Outdoor Office Work – hur funkar det? / [ed] Martina Berglund, Linköpings universitet, Linköping, 2019, Vol. 2019, p. 119-120Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

    Bakgrund

Sickness absence following breast cancer surgery: a two-year follow-up cohort study2018In: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences, ISSN 0283-9318, E-ISSN 1471-6712, Vol. 32, no 2, p. 715-724Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Rationale and aim

Most women of working ages with limited breast cancer (BC) have returned to work within the first year after diagnosis. However, little is known about what is happening during this year regarding sickness absence and return to work. Also, the knowledge is very limited about the occurrence of part‐time sickness absence after BC diagnosis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe occurrence, extent and length of SA during a two‐year follow‐up after BC surgery and to analyse the association between being SA and type of cancer treatment.

    Methods

In this prospective cohort study, 497 women responded to questionnaires about different aspects of sickness absence at six occasions during two years after primary BC surgery (at baseline and after 4, 8, 12, 18 and 24 months). Treatment information was obtained from the National breast cancer register. Multinomial logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (OR) for likelihood of being sickness absent more than once.

    Results

Two‐thirds of the women were sickness absent at baseline; this proportion decreased, especially during the first eight months. At 24 months, 13% were sickness absent. Of all women, 27% never reported sickness absence and 14% were sickness absent at most of the six survey times. At eight months, many had shifted from full‐ to part‐time sickness absence. Women with chemotherapy and/or advanced BC surgery had higher ORs for being sickness absent at most of the follow‐ups.

    Conclusions

Most women returned to work within the first eight months after BC surgery and of those sickness absent after that, most had been part‐time sickness absent. Thus, it is important to differentiate between part‐ and full‐time sickness absence in future studies. Special attention should be paid to the impact of chemotherapy and type of surgery on the likelihood of being sickness absent.

Physical occupational exposures and health expectancies in a French occupational cohort2017In: Occupational and Environmental Medicine, ISSN 1351-0711, E-ISSN 1470-7926, Vol. 74, no 3, p. 176-183Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives To examine the relationships of strenuous and hazardous working conditions and rotating shifts that involve night working with life expectancy in good perceived health and life expectancy without chronic disease.

Methods The sample contained male gas and electricity workers from the French GAZEL cohort (n=13 393). Six measures of physical working conditions were examined: Self-reports from 1989 and 1990 of ergonomic strain, physical danger, rotating shifts that involve night working and perceived physical strain; company records of workplace injuries and a job-exposure matrix of chemical exposures. Partial healthy life expectancies (age 50-75) relating to (1) self-rated health and (2) chronic health conditions, obtained from annual questionnaires (1989-2014) and company records, were estimated using multistate life tables. The analyses were adjusted for social class and occupational grade.

Results Participants with physically strenuous jobs and who had experienced industrial injuries had shorter partial life expectancy. More physically demanding and dangerous work was associated with fewer years of life spent in good self-rated health and without chronic conditions, with the exception of shift work including nights, where the gradient was reversed.

Conclusions Strenuous and hazardous work may contribute to lost years of good health in later life, which has implications for individuals' quality of life as well as healthcare use and labour market participation.

    Abstract [en]

Stress and stress-related complaints such as fatigue and depressed mood are common among teachers. Yet, knowledge about the links between the overall level of teacher stress within a school and individual student outcomes is scarce. This study investigates if the levels of teacher-reported stress, fatigue and depressed mood within a school are associated with students’ ratings of their school satisfaction and perceived teacher caring, respectively. Data derives from two separate data collections performed in upper secondary schools in 2016, the Stockholm School Survey (SSS) and the Stockholm Teacher Survey (STS), which were linked together (5367 students and 1045 teachers in 46 schools). Two-level linear regression analyses were performed. Results showed negative associations between school-level teacher stress, fatigue, and depressed mood and students’ school satisfaction and perceived teacher caring, even when controlling for student- and school-level sociodemographic characteristics. The findings suggest that teacher stress may have negative implications for students.

I gränsen mellan HR och IT: Om lärande och förändring vid automatisering inom HR2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digitalization and automation has increasingly been connected to arguments about changes in working life. This study address digitalization and automation in practice by focusing on HR-practitioners and the organizing of automation in HR units at larger organizations in Sweden. Despite several reportsarguing thatautomation technologies will changeHuman Resources, there arefew empirical studies about this transformation. Therefore the aim of the study isto get a deeper understanding of digitalization and automationin HR-units at larger organizations from a Human Resource Development perspective. By using a organizing and situated learning perspective and theories about boundaries and boundary roles, the study have focused on learning and change processes with automation. The study hasa qualitative approach and used a cross-sectional design. Seven semi-structured interviews have been conducted with HR-practitioners from six different organizations. The findings showed that there are contextual differences between the HR departments regarding how they have organized for automation, which have created different conditionsfor change and learning. A key finding is the need for a boundary role between the HR and IT department. The study also showsthat automation does not imply a change in work and competence for all HR-personnel, as there were only a few persons whichjob had been affected by automation.

Developing Leadership and Employee Health Through the Arts: Improving Leader-Employee Relationships2016Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This book examines the problems that a “laissez faire” attitude from managers can create in the workplace, as well as the ensuing illness such problems may cause among employees. The book offers new ideas for dealing with these problems and proposes the use of cultural experiences as an active component in leadership development programmes for managers. It presents the findings from a randomized trial to show how cultural experiences can be deployed, and what the effect on employees is. The book discusses health-promoting leadership and key components in cultural activities for the benefit of workplaces from several points of view, offering a historical, social, psychological, biological, educational and organizational perspective. Finally, it presents new theories on empathy in managers, and on employee effects of good/bad changes in manager behaviour.

    Abstract [en]

“Perpetual little girl” – Gender coding of the costume design-profession: A critical discourse analysis is a bachelor’s thesis in Performance Studies written by Yonna S. Thil in the spring of 2023 at Stockholm University. This study focuses on the gendering of the costume design-profession, as well as the gendering of theatre professions in general and attempts to answer the question “How does female gender coding affect the professional role of the costume designer?”. Fashion history and theatre history is used to map out the ways in which the costume designer is at a point of intersection between fashion, a highly feminized phenomenon, and theatre, a system which has excluded women from the practice for thousands of years. Statistics from Stockholm University of the Arts and interviews with both male and female costume designers working in theatre and film in Sweden tell the story of how the feminization of their profession affect the practice. The study includes comparisons with male coded professions in the theatre system, questions of the wage gap between male and female coded professions as well as discussions of the artistic genius and charismatic authority.

Changes in Job Quality as People Work Beyond Pensionable Age in Sweden2021In: Innovation in Aging, E-ISSN 2399-5300, Vol. 5, no Supplement_1, p. 414-415Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper uses data from the biennial Swedish Longitudinal Occupational Survey of Health to examine changes in job quality among older workers, controlling for work intensity and employment characteristics. Job quality outcomes included job satisfaction and physical (dangerous, strenuous or unpleasant work) and psychosocial (job strain, effort-reward imbalance, work time control) working conditions. First difference estimation was used to analyze within-individual changes in job quality, as well as changes in hours, employment characteristics (shifting to a non-permanent contract, the private sector and self-employment) and health. Individuals who worked beyond pensionable age experienced statistically significant improvements in job quality, with larger improvements among those who reduced working hours and shifted from permanent to non-permanent contracts, from the public into the private sector, and from wage-and-salary to self-employment. We conclude that work beyond pensionable age is a distinctive period characterized by employment that becomes more flexible and rewarding and less stressful.

    Abstract [sv]

Managerial prerequisites - typical work situations for public sector managers and their relationship with well-being and leadership2023In: Nordic Psychology, ISSN 1901-2276, E-ISSN 1904-0016Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Work-related negative effects on well-being have increased in frequency and variability, specifically within the public sector and among managers. In the Job Demands-Resources model it is suggested that increased demands reduce well-being and decrease performance, but the research literature demonstrates little research in the context of managers and leadership. The purpose of this study was to investigate variability in work situations among Swedish public sector managers and how this was related to differences in stress, impaired health, work engagement and leadership performance. 267 managers in a mid-sized Swedish municipality responded to a web-based survey and formed six clusters. Three clusters comprising 42% of managers had less favorable working conditions and significantly worse well-being, less frequent transformational and transactional leadership behaviors as well as slightly lower work engagement. A conclusion from the study is that worse managerial working situations may lead to decreased possibilities to perform leadership in an active way.

How to work for a good night's sleep2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Stress and sleep problems are common in the working population and cause considerable costs for society. Sleep is the most important part of recovery, and poor sleep has a negative impact on overall functioning, which might have important consequences for both the employee, the employer and society. In order to find strategies to alleviate this contemporary public health concern of stress and poor sleep in the working population, this thesis evaluated interventions performed at the workplace to target these issues.

The first intervention is a randomized controlled trial of a 25% work time reduction for full-time workers within the public sector in Sweden. Study I evaluated the impact of work time reduction on subjective sleep quality, sleep duration, sleepiness, perceived stress, and bedtime worries. Assessments included diary data from one week at three occasions over 18 months. Study II investigated time-use patterns through activity reporting sheets used during the work time reduction by evaluating the amount of total workload, paid work, non-paid work and recovery activities. Both studies investigated workdays and days off separately as well as the importance of gender, family status and work situation (only Study II). The second randomized controlled intervention of the thesis is a group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention at the workplace targeting sleep disturbances among employees within the retail sector in Sweden (Study III). Data were collected through questionnaires, diaries and objective sleep measurement (actigraphy) over a period of ten days before and after the intervention, as well as at a three-month follow up. The study evaluated the effects of the intervention on sleep and explored the moderating effect of burnout-levels at baseline.

In our studies, an economically fully compensated reduction of work hours for full-time workers lead to long-term positive effects on sleep duration and sleep quality, sleepiness and levels of perceived stress. During this work time reduction, the total workload of both paid and non-paid work was reduced and time spent in recovery activities increased. The results indicate that a more balanced relation between effort and recovery was established. The second intervention, which targets the individual through a group CBT-intervention for insomnia at the workplace, was shown to improve insomnia symptoms in daytime workers who did not suffer from concurrent burnout. Such an intervention could support the individual in handling sleep problems and preventing the development of more severe and chronic sleep disorders, as opposed to interventions aimed at making environmental changes at the workplace. However, the CBT-intervention evaluated within this thesis will need to be further developed in order to be beneficial for more groups of employees. The positive effects of these interventions might be beneficial for public health and help improve employee’s life satisfaction, daily functioning and health development.

The impact of reduced worktime on sleep and perceived stress – a group randomized intervention study using diary data2017In: Scandinavian Journal of Work, Environment and Health, ISSN 0355-3140, E-ISSN 1795-990X, Vol. 43, no 2, p. 109-116Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Objective Insufficient time for recovery between workdays may cause fatigue and disturbed sleep. This study evaluated the impact of an intervention that reduced weekly working hours by 25% on sleep, sleepiness and perceived stress for employees within the public sector.

Method Participating workplaces (N=33) were randomized into intervention and control groups. Participants (N=580, 76% women) worked full-time at baseline. The intervention group (N=354) reduced worktime to 75% with preserved salary during 18 months. Data were collected at baseline and after 9 and 18 months follow-up. Sleep quality, sleep duration, sleepiness, perceived stress, and worries and stress at bedtime were measured with diary during one week per data collection.

Result A multilevel mixed model showed that compared with the control group, at the 18-month follow-up, the intervention group had improved sleep quality and sleep duration (+23 minutes) and displayed reduced levels of sleepiness, perceived stress, and worries and stress at bedtime on workdays (P<0.002). The same effects were shown for days off (P<0.006), except for sleep length. Effect sizes were small (Cohen’s f2<0.08). Adding gender, age, having children living at home, and baseline values of sleep quality and worries and stress at bedtime as additional between-group factors did not influence the results.

Conclusion A 25% reduction of weekly work hours with retained salary resulted in beneficial effects on sleep, sleepiness and perceived stress both on workdays and days off. These effects were maintained over an 18-month period. This randomized intervention thus indicates that reduced worktime may improve recovery and perceived stress.

Total workload and recovery in relation to worktime reduction – a randomized controlled intervention study with time-use dataManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Objectives: A 25% reduction of weekly work hours for full-time employees has been shown to improve sleep and alertness and reduce stress during both workdays and days off. The aim of the present study was to investigate how employees use their time during such an intervention: does total workload (paid and non-paid work) decrease, and recovery time increase, when work hours are reduced?

Methods: Full-time employees within the public sector (N=636; 75% women) were randomized into intervention group and control group. The intervention group (N=370) reduced worktime to 75% with preserved salary during 18 months. Data were collected at baseline, after 9 months and 18 months. Time-use was reported every half hour daily between 06 and 01 a.m. during one week at each data collection. Data were analyzed with multilevel mixed modeling.

Results: Compared to the control group, the intervention group increased the time spent on domestic work and relaxing hobby activities during workdays when worktime was reduced (p≤0.001). On days off, more time was spent in free-time activities (p=0.003). Total workload decreased (-65 minutes) and time spent in recovery activities increased on workdays (+53 minutes). The pattern of findings was similar in subgroups defined by gender, family status and job situation.

Conclusions: A worktime reduction of 25% for full-time workers resulted in decreased total workload and an increase of time spent in recovery activities, which is in line with the suggestion that worktime reduction may be beneficial for long-term health and stress.

A randomized controlled intervention of workplace-based group cognitive behavioral therapy for insomniaManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: Sleep disturbance is common in the working population, often associated with work stress, health complaints and impaired work performance. This study evaluated a group intervention at work, based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for insomnia, and the moderating effects of burnout scores at baseline.

Methods: This is a randomized controlled intervention with a waiting-list control group. Participants were employees working at least 75% of full time, reporting self-perceived regular sleep problems. Data were collected at baseline, post-intervention and at a three-month follow-up through diaries, wrist-actigraphy and questionnaires including the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and the Shirom-Melamed Burnout Questionnaire (SMBQ). Fifty-one participants (63% women) completed data collections.

Results: A multilevel mixed model showed no significant differences between groups for sleep over time, while there was a significant effect on insomnia symptoms when excluding participants working shifts (N=11) from the analysis (p=0.044). Moreover, a moderating effect of baseline-levels of burnout scores was observed on insomnia symptoms (p=0.009). A post-hoc analysis showed that individuals in the intervention group with low burnout scores at baseline (SMBQ<3.75) displayed significantly reduced ISI scores at follow-up, compared to individuals with high burnout scores at baseline (p=0.005).

Conclusions: Group CBT for insomnia given at the workplace did not reduce sleep problems looking at the group as a whole, while it was indicated that the intervention reduced insomnia in employees with regular daytime work. The results also suggest that workplace-based group CBT may improve sleep in employees with primary insomnia if not concomitant with high burnout scores.

Concentration requirements modify the effect of office type on indicators of health and performance2014In: Journal of Environmental Psychology, ISSN 0272-4944, E-ISSN 1522-9610, Vol. 38, p. 167-174Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates the interaction between need for concentration on the job and six office types in relation to distraction, cognitive stress, emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, personal efficiency and general health. 1241 employees from five organizations participated in the study. Cell offices were associated with lower reported levels of distraction and cognitive stress, and flex offices with lower distraction, among the employees compared with all other open-plan office types. There were no significant differences in the outcome variables between different types of open-plan offices. However, there was an interaction between office type and the need for concentration for the job; employees in the high need for concentration group reported more distraction in all office types except in cell offices and also more cognitive stress in all office types except cell offices and flex offices. In conclusion, cell offices may be preferable for tasks that require higher need for concentrations.

Supermänniskor?: Krav och kravhantering för konsulter på ett bemanningsföretag2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Solving ‘the Uniform Issue’: Gender and Professional Identity in the Swedish Military2022In: Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies, E-ISSN 2245-0157, Vol. 12, no 4, p. 3-20Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article contributes empirical knowledge about the shifting ways in which the Swedish Armed Forces (SAF) has articulated and addressed ‘the uniform issue’, that is, matters concerning servicewomen’s access to adequate uniforms and other equipment, since the 1980s. Drawing on analytical tools employed within post-structural policy analysis, we demonstrate how ‘the uniform issue’ has gone from being articulated as a problem for servicewomen, and to be solved by servicewomen, to a problem for the SAF in its pursuit to become an attractive employer and a legitimate public authority. By shedding light on how ‘the uniform issue’ has been problematized in shifting ways since Swedish women first were allowed to serve in all military positions, this article also contributes important insights into broader scholarly debates about workplace discrimination, gender equality, and gendered occupational identities in military work.

A shared experience: studies on families and unemployment2002Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Paper I Unemployment and families. A review of research The purpose of this paper is to offer a broad review of research on the consequences of unemployment for families and family members. A large number of empirical studies have been divided into subgroups according to subject: unemployed individuals and the couple; the spouses of unemployed individuals; and the children of unemployed individuals. The discussion of the studies focuses on the extent to which observed effects can be ascribed specifically to unemployment, and the importance of other factors, such as intervening variables. Although there are some dissenting voices, most studies focusing on unemployment and families do suggest that the unemployed and their families are exposed to adverse events and circumstances to a greater extent than other people. However, precisely what role unemployment plays in this, and what significance other related factors have, is still largely unclear.

Paper II Keep out of the reach of children. Parental unemployment and children’s accident risks in Sweden 1991-1993 In the early 1990s, unemployment levels increased dramatically in Sweden. Although the effects of unemployment on unemployed individuals are well documented, research on parental unemployment and children has been limited. The aim of the present study is to explore the relationship between parental unemployment and the risk of accidents to children in Sweden during the period 1991–1993. Two independent samples are used: the Swedish Level of Living Survey 1991 (original sample 6,733 individuals) and the Swedish Longitudinal Study among Unemployed 1992–1993 (original sample 792). The samples were taken during periods of low and high unemployment. The results indicate that parental unemployment is associated with an increased risk of accidents among children in 1991, 1992 and 1993. The increased risk does not seem to be due to the effects of adverse selection into unemployment on parental well-being, financial difficulties or alcohol consumption. It is also suggested that low parental well-being is of causal significance within the unemployed group.

Paper III Unemployment and gendered divisions of domestic labor A certain level of gender inequality prevails both in families and in societies, regardless of which countries are studied. This is, among other things, intimately associated with the fact that women have the main responsibility for home and family. Here, I study whether unemployment is associated with alterations in the gendered division of domestic labor among Swedish men and women. Levels of domestic labor activity during periods of unemployment are explored, as well as the question of whether any associations persist after the individual re-enters employment. The data materials used are the Swedish Longitudinal Study among Unemployed 1992-1993, as well as the Swedish Level of Living Survey from 1991. The results indicate that although gender is the best predictor of levels of domestic labor activity, labor market status also affects levels of domestic labor activity. In other words, women are more active than men are, but the unemployed are more active compared with the employed. The hypothesis that male unemployment is associated with a more equal division of domestic labor is thus supported. For women, the hypothesis that unemployment is related to an exacerbated unequal division of domestic labor receives support. It however appears questionable whether unemployment has any permanent effects on activity in domestic labor, since the re-employed decrease their domestic labor activity.

Paper IV Unemployment and the first birth. Swedish couples 1991-2000 The aim of the present study is to examine the relationship between unemployment and fertility in Sweden during the period 1991-2000, with particular emphasis on gender differences. This period was characterized by high unemployment as well as very low total fertility. Given that the decision option is available, characteristics of both presumptive parents are likely to influence the decision as to whether, and if so when, to have a child. Even so, previous research has focused on the individual rather than the couple. The present study uses couple data from the 1991 and 2000 Level of Living Surveys and register data from the Swedish Labor Market Board. The findings indicate that unemployment on the individual level is unrelated to first-birth intensities regardless of which spouse is unemployed. What does appear to be related to first-birth intensities, however, is the couples’ educational level, which is used here as a proxy for prospects on the labor market.

Behövs verkligen en chef?: En fallstudie om hur självledande anställda upplever behovet av en chef2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

LGBT in the Military: Policy Development in Sweden 1944–20142016In: Sexuality Research & Social Policy, ISSN 1868-9884, E-ISSN 1553-6610, Vol. 13, no 2, p. 119-129Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article contributes to the growing field of research on military LGBT policy development by exploring the case of Sweden, a non-NATO-member nation regarded as one of the most progressive in terms of the inclusion of LGBT personnel. Drawing on extensive archival work, the article shows that the story of LGBT policy development in the Swedish Armed Forces from 1944 to 2014 is one of long periods of status quo and relative silence, interrupted by leaps of rapid change, occasionally followed by the re-appearance of discriminatory policy. The analysis brings out two periods of significant change, 1971–1979 and 2000–2009, here described as turns in LGBT policy. During the first turn, the military medical regulation protocol’s recommendation to exempt gay men from military service was the key issue. During these years, homosexuality was classified as mental illness, but in the military context it was largely framed in terms of security threats, both on a national level (due to the risk of blackmail) and for the individual homosexual (due to the homophobic military environment). In the second turn, the focus was increasingly shifted from the LGBT individual to the structures, targeting the military organization itself. Furthermore, the analysis shows that there was no ban against LGBT people serving in the Swedish Armed Forces, but that ways of understanding and regulating sexual orientation and gender identity have nonetheless shaped the military organization in fundamental ways, and continue to do so.
