Amis leende: Minne och remediering i Henry Parlands roman Sönder2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Begärets politiska potential: Feministiska motståndsstrategier i Elin Wägners Pennskaftet, Gabriele Reuters Aus guter Familie, Hilma Angered-Strandbergs Lydia Vik och Grete Meisel-Hess Die Intellektuellen2016Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation investigates the way that feminist resistance is expressed in two Swedish and two German so-called New Woman novels from the turn of the twentieth century: Elin Wägner’s Pennskaftet (1910, Penwoman), Gabriele Reuter’s Aus guter Familie (1895, From a Good Family), Hilma Angered-Strandberg’s Lydia Vik (1904), and Grete Meisel-Hess’s Die Intellektuellen (1911).

The theoretical apparatus is comprised by the work of Michel Foucault, Judith Butler, Jacques Lacan, and Jessica Benjamin. By introducing a psychoanalytic and feminist perspective, this dissertation seeks to develop the possibilities for agency and resistance within the framework of Foucault’s theories. It investigates four textual and contextually grounded strategies of resistance that are prominent in these novels: individuality, openness, desire, and eugenics.

This study demonstrates how Gabriele Reuter, Grete Meisel-Hess, and  Hilma Angered-Strandberg, inspired by the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche and Ellen Key, depict feminine individuality in relation to a scientific and philosophical discourse that specifically denied women individuality. The authors anchor individuality in a corporality that was similarly denied to women by a bourgeois and dogmatic Christian discourse.

Openness and wit function as resistance strategies in Elin Wägner’s Pennskaftet. Humorous rejoinders and narrative comments can disarm a conservative. An open attitude towards the emancipation project could also help to resolve the conflicts between different feminist positions and between different women.

Desire functions as an important resistance strategy in each of the novels examined. It is variously represented as a vital instinct, a desire for knowledge, and a sexual desire, as in Gabriele Reuter’s Aus guter Familie – or as a desire for suffrage, as in Pennskaftet, or for maternity legislation, as in Grete Meisel-Hess’s Die Intellektuellen. By formulating a notion of feminine desire, turn-of-the-century feminists were able both to seize control of sexuality from the church and to wrest morality from the grasp of the bourgeoisie. These resistance strategies could also have a biopolitical character: in Grete Meisel-Hess’s Die Intellektuellen, woman is placed at the service of humanity on eugenicist grounds, and her good qualities are seen as capable of promoting humanity’s progress.

This dissertation shows that in these novels desire at the individual level serves to reinforce feminine subjectivity. Love is seen as associated with an intensified sense of life and as a precondition of creativity. At the social level, desire also functions as the basis for a feeling of solidarity among women that instils in them courage and an urge to persevere in the suffrage struggle, this latter a highly protracted process. In this way desire acquires political potential.

A framing chapter on context provides the intellectual and philosophical backgrounds of the various strategies of resistance. It is followed by four analytical chapters, each of which addresses one novel.

Studier i Stig Dagermans diktning2010Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The main aim of the dissertation is to examine the importance of the moment in relation to human experience and to the narrative in the writings of Stig Dagerman (1923-1954), primarily the novels Ormen (The Snake, 1945), De dömdas ö (The Island of the Doomed, 1946), Bränt barn (A Burnt Child, 1948), Bröllopsbesvär (Wedding Worries, 1949), the short stories "Den hängdes träd" (The Hanging Tree, 1945) and "De röda vagnarna" (The Red Wagons, 1946). The dissertation shows the moment as being of crucial importance by serving as the point of time for the fictional character’s critical experience. The moment also functions as a structuring principle for the narrative. In this, the discussion is supported by the theories on the chronotope found in the work of Mikhail Bakhtin.

With the ideas of Michael Riffaterre as the principal theoretical basis in the study, the reading of the texts focuses on a matrix common to the works discussed. The reading goes from a description of the primarily profane subject matter of the narrative to an understanding of the religious discourse in the works. This interpretation receives additional support in the theories on religious and mystical experiences found in Rudolf Otto.

Finally, the dissertation focuses on man’s sensitivity to, and longing for, a transcendental entity or a God in the broadest sense – a longing which manifests itself in different ways in these texts and is set against the human predicament of being. Man’s desperate religious longing for a transcendental entity or a God are ultimately understood as the significance or principle of unity in the texts under discussion.

'Aequitas' i Thorsten Jonssons novellsamling Fly till vatten och morgon2014In: Literatūra un likums/ Literature and Law: Culture and Literature of the Scandinavian Nations in International and Interdisciplinary Perspective / [ed] Ivars Orehovs & Cecilia Wargelius, Riga: Latvijas Universitate , 2014, 1, p. 102-111Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The paper is based on a number of theories, elaborated within the interdisciplinary field of study ”law and literature”, and interprets Thorsten Jonsson’s short story collection Fly till vatten och morgon [Flee to water and morning (1941)] in terms of equity. The paper demonstrates that Jonsson’s method of arranging his criminal material – mostly real criminal cases, reported in newspaper articles and investigation records – to a large extent corresponds to the principle of equity: the short stories take up an hermeneutic attitude toward the presented criminal cases, correct official legal representation of the crimes by refering to the inner life of the criminals, supplement the individualized and psychologized portraits of criminals by traits borrowed from the image of the paradigmatic criminal and relating them to general human weaknesses, use these complex reflexions on criminality to criticizying the judicial and penal apparatus etc. Special attention is given to power structures established by the collection’s equity project. It is argued that the interpretative practices of the short stories rest on the binary, theological-utilitarian notion of nature which implies repressive marginalizations and, among others, results in the criminalization of homosexual behavior. But paradoxically, the collection’s equity hermeneutics revolts againts its own hegemonic regulations and produces a number of counterhegemonic semantic displacements. Particularly subersive are the short stories’ narrative structures which one the one hand are a product of the collection’s binarities, but on the other hand load these equity norms with a connotative ironic ambiguity.

Bildförbud eller ordförbud? Om ikonoklasmen hos Birgitta Trotzig2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The  contribution  investigates  culinary  transitions between  Sweden  and  Europe  in  Torgny Lindgren's and Ella Nilsson's epistolary cookbook, Maten.  Hunger  och  törst  i  Västerbotten(2003) (Food: Hunger and Thirst in Västerbotten). With a theoretical starting point in discourse-analytic approaches to nationalistic ideology, primarily elaborated within cultural studies, the contribution examines uses of the binarity of Sweden/Europe in essentialist and deconstructive practices of the cookbook. The argument comprises three parts. In the first part, the cookbook's conception of Västerbottenian cuisine is scrutinized. It is argued that Lindgren's and Nilsson's construction of gastronomic Västerbottenianness  brings into play a whole range of rhetorical strategies that are usually utilized to construct national cuisines. Västerbottenian cookery is: (a) codified as a normative canon, (b) connected to a specific place, to a historical tradition and to ritualized customs, (c) defined as a restitution project preserving regional heritage from entropy, and (d) organized according to certain culinary icons, each of which mythologically incarnates some part of the "soul" of the region. The second part discusses the position of Europe on the cookbook's gastronomic map. The concept of Europeanness  in Maten  is  shown  to  be constructed as a cultural "Other" and – by analogy with other counter-images – (a) excluded from the field of genuine cookery, (b) smuggled into the cookbook's culinary discourse through devices of disguise and (c) manifest in "typical" Västerbottnian recipes its presence in "typical" Västerbottenian  recipes  by  generating  contradictions,  semantic  displacements  and  aporetic paradoxes.  The  final  part  examines  the  role  of  Sweden  among  the  cookbook's  gastronomic identities.  Unlike  traditional  cookery  books  dedicated  to  Swedish  national  cuisine, Matenproblematizes  the  relationship  between  centre  and  periphery,  constructing  Swedishness  as  a "double"  identity:  both  the  internalized  "Self"  and  the  oppressive  "Other".  Correspondingly, Lindgren  and  Nilsson  have  an  ambiguous,  partly  ironic,  attitude  towards  their  own  local patriotic cuisine project using the notion of "Saminess" to undermine Västerbottenian culinary logocentrism.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

On Brigitta Trotzig’s Notion of Iconoclasm

The Swedish writer Birgitta Trotzig (1928–2011) defines her own process of literary creation in interart terms as a translation of pictures into verbal signs. She often comments on the intersemiotic difficulties involved in this transformation by referring to the Byzantine iconoclastic controversy. Using Trotzig’s notion of the iconoclastic controversy as a starting point, the present article investigates her understanding of the picture-word-transformation problems. The line of argument comprises five stages. In the first stage, the main issue of the article is presented and specified. In the second stage, it is argued that previous critical approaches to Trotzig’s Byzantinism in most cases have been based on misleadingly anachronistic and mainly Occidental categories. In the third stage, the Byzantine iconoclastic controversy is related to the distinctive character of the theological thought of the Eastern Church. In the fourth stage, the Byzantine iconophile and iconoclast theories are applied to Trotzig’s literary works. A close reading of a representative prose poem of hers, “Teologiska variationer” (“Theological variations”), demonstrates that her works unequivocally support the icon theology of the iconodules. In the closing fifth stage, Trotzig’s notion of the Byzantine iconoclastic controversy is reconstructed on the basis of her essays and interviews in which she explains her own as well as other authors’ intersemiotic difficulties. In conclusion, these difficulties are related to general aesthetic, political, ideological and philophical conflicts, all of which are – paradoxically – diagnosed by Trotzig herself in typical categories of Western theology.

Svaghetsegoism: Om Andreas Bjerres kriminalpsykologi i Thorsten Jonssons novellsamling Fly till vatten och morgon2013In: Filologiskt smörgåsbord 2: Vetenskapliga bidrag från skandinavistiken i Kraków / [ed] Ewa Data-Bukowska & Magdalena Wasilewska-Chmura, Kraków: Jagiellonian University Press, 2013, 1, p. 11-33Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The paper examines Thorsten Jonsson’s Fly till vatten och morgon (Flee to water and morning, 1941), a short story collection based on material from real criminal cases, reported in newspaper articles and investigation records. Special attention is given to the connections between Jonsson’s short stories and the criminal psychology of Andreas Bjerre, an intertextual relation highly neglected by earlier scholars. Jonsson studied Bjerre’s psychological theories while working on a monograph on the prose writer Martin Koch. The discussion of the paper focuses on five intertextual areas. Firstly, it is argued that the characters in Jonsson’s short stories in their construction are founded on Bjerre’s psychological classification of criminals. Secondly, it is demonstrated that Bjerre’s conception of the paradigmatic criminal had an analogous influence on Jonsson’s characterization. Thirdly, drawing on Bjerre’s ethics, the paper analyzes the collection’s moral approach to criminality. Fourthly, some intertextual correspondences are shown between Jonsson’s social discourse and Bjerre’s criticism of the European judicial and penal apparatus. Fifthly and finally, the paper points out that some of the collection’s most effective narrative devices are inspired by Bjerre’s interview method, invented by him for the purpose of revealing self-deception of criminals.

Sverige, Norden, världen: Kulturella rum hos Birgitta Trotzig2017In: CSS Conference 2017, "Rethinking Scandinavia": Lund 14-17 juni 2017, 2017Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Desto starkare aktualiseras Norden i Trotzigs skönlitterära författarskap.

Todorov and After. Some Reflections on the Modern Study of the Fantastic

The paper examines Tzvetan Todorov’s theory of the fantastic, formulated in his influential study The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to A Literary Genre (1970, eng. transl. 1975). Special attention is given to the theory’s historical background, its epistemological structure, and its reception in literary criticism. Discussing the genesis of Todorov’s concept of the fantastic, the paper focuses on three fundamental factors determining his investigation: the high status of the fantastic in French literary history and criticism, the development of the structuralist methodology in the sixties, and Todorov’s intimate knowledge of Russian formalism. Drawing on Foucault’s archaeology of knowledge, the paper analyses the epistemes ruling the surface structure and the deep structure respectively of Todorov’s theory. In the surface structure one can observe a considerable epistemological homogenity, based on the episteme of dehumanisation. In the deep structure, however, Todorov’s definition of the fantastic, it is claimed, refers to incompatible notions of imagination rooted in two different epistemes: one pre-Kantian, corresponding to the Greek notion of phantasia, and one post-Kantian, founded on the idea of subjectivity. Todorov’s structural, anti-subjectivist approach to the fantastic, the paper demonstrates, results in a rebirth of the subject. As often the case with groundbreaking works, the reception of  Todorov’s study has been mostly critical. Scholars have found five main weeknesses in Todorov’s concept: a lack of historical, contextual and ideological modes of description, a definitional narrowness, an inability to establish stable and pragmatic genre denominators, an overdimensioned emphasis on narrative categories, and a disregard for non-literary and nonlinguistic media. The revisions of Todorov’s concept that have been elaborated during the last decades have used of a wide spectrum of theoretical models: Goldman’s genetic dialectics, the theory of possible worlds, the notion of intermediality, the cognitive narratology, and the theory of iconic „antiworlds”, among others. With reference to Bloom’s notion of anxiety of influence, the paper argues that the attempts to modify the theory tend to relapse into Todorov’s own patterns of thought, and, paradoxically, confirm his position as leading scholar in the field of the fantastic.
