    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Byzantine Gardens and Beyond has its origin in a symposium that was organized by the Nordic Byzantine Network in April 2011 at the Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS), situated in the Botanical Garden of Uppsala. The anthology aims to bring together different perspectives on Byzantine garden culture. Byzantium offers a vantage point for reflecting on the wider meaning and significance of the garden. This topic is discussed by a group of scholars belonging to various disciplines and methodological approaches, ranging from Byzantine Studies, Archaeology, Landscape Architecture and Literary Studies, to Slavic, Arabic and Swedish languages. The collection of articles takes the reader through time and space, from the Garden of Eden to Rome and Constantinople, and further to Syria, Russia, and Scandinavia. One discovers that the cultivation of gardens has provided unceasing inspiration to artist, writers and thinkers throughout the ages.

Det modernistiska subjektsupproret: en undersökning av relationen mellan form och innehåll i Karin Boyes Kris2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The article «Poesins vanitas» («Poetic vanitas») presents five lyrical examples of the vanitas theme in Western literature, spread out over as many centuries (from the 15th to the 20th). The Spaniard Jorge Manrique’s (1440–79) «Couplets on the Death of His Father» expresses an involvement with the problem of time typical of much Spanish poetry, based on the medieval topic of ubi sunt. In the sonnet «All Is Vanity» by the Schlesian poet Andreas Gryphius (1616 –64), the same Biblical theme is played off against the Baroque fascination with material culture and instantaneous experience. The Swedish poet Viktor Rydberg (1828 –95), for his part, represents nineteenth century idealism, confronting a new sense of existential emptiness and meaninglessness (provoked by recent scientific and technological advances) through recourse to memory and dreaming. By contrast, the poem «Troubled Dreams» by Finno-Swedish Edith Södergran (1892–1923) shatters standard Romantic illusions in its early modernist version of the vanitas trauma. Finally, the German-speaking poet Paul Celan (1920–70), born in (present-day) Romania, gives voice to a post-war experience of utter desolation, perchance, however, relieved by the presence of the beloved.

The Shadow of Creusa: Negotiating Fictionality in Late Antique Latin Literature2015 (ed. 1)Book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Anders Cullhed’s study The Shadow of Creusa explores the early Christian confrontation with pagan culture as a remote anticipation of many later clashes between religious orthodoxy and literary fictionality. After a careful survey of Saint Augustine’s critical attitudes to ancient myth and poetry, summarized as a long drawn-out farewell, Cullhed examines other Late Antique dismissals as well as appropriations of the classical heritage. Macrobius, Martianus Capella and Boethius figure among the Late Antique intellectuals who attempted to save or even restore the old mythology by means of allegorical representation. On the other hand, pious poets such as Paulinus of Nola and Bible epic writers such as Iuvencus or Avitus of Vienne turned against pagan lies, and the mighty arch-bishop of Milan, Saint Ambrose, played off unconditional Christian truth against the last Roman strongholds of cultural pluralism. Thus, The Shadow of Creusa elucidates a cultural conflict which was to leave traces all through the Middle Ages and reach down to our present day.

Tre romantiska berättelser: Studier i Eyvind Johnsons Romantisk berättelse och Tidens gång, Lars Gustafssons Poeten Brumbergs sista dagar och död och Sven Delblancs Kastrater1999Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation explores the notion 'romantic story' as a literary device in three Swedish late modernist novels: Eyvind Johnson's Romantisk berättelse (1953) (Romantic Story) and Tidens gång. En romantisk berättelse (1955) (The Passage of Time. A Romantic Story), Lars Gustafsson's Poeten Brumbergs sista dagar och död. En romantisk berättelse (1959) (The Last Days and Death of the Poet Brumberg. A Romantic Story), and Sven Delblanc's Kastrater. En romantisk berättelse (1975) (Castrati. A Romantic Story). The study consists of three parts, one on each novel.

In part, the dissertation turns around the word 'romantic' and the historical period designated by this name; and addresses the topic of what the term has come to mean in a period of late modernist aesthetics. In part, it is an investigation of the three novels as 'romantic stories', i.e. a study of the generic properties of the novels, and also of the novel as a literary genre. By the very nature of the study the approach is ecclectic, encompassing interests in paratextuality (chapters 2, 5, 10), narratology (chapter 3), autobiography (chapter 4), hypertextuality and intertextuality (chapters 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12), literary form (chapter 9), literary genres (chapter 10), as well as the relation between the literary work and the historical and cultural context that it is possible to construct around it (chapters 4, 6, 12, 13). However, the focus of the study always remains on the texts and how they work, making use of close reading as a strategic means of teasing out meaning and reference.

The dissertation concludes with a chapter in which the three novels are looked at as group and from the point of view of the internal histor(icit)y of Modernism.
