    Abstract [en]

In this article, the aphorisms of Klara Johanson (1875–1948) are related to the history of the genre. I argue that her aphorisms should be examined in the light of the romantic aphorism and be considered as a contribution to aesthetics. The etymology of the term ”aesthetics” – sensuous perception – foregrounds the body, as does the earliest uses of the term ”aphorism” (Aphorismoi was the title of Hippocrates’ famous compendium of medical propositions and recommendations). The meaning of the term was later transferred from medicine to other disciplines, most notably politics, drawing on the analogy of the relation between the health of the physical body and the health of the state (connected by the theory of the four humours). Of course, by the beginning of the 20th century, that theory was no longer valid. However, the connection between the body and the state had endured, and was now understood in terms of the romantic concept of the ”organism”. Johanson’s aphorisms unite these two aspects: the body as sensuous perception and the body related to the state. According to Gerhard Neumann’s definition, the form of the romantic aphorism is a representation of conflict between abstract, mathematical truth, and personal, sensuous truth. This conflict informs Johanson’s aphorisms, although her modern take on the romantic conflict was more in line with the Italian philosopher Benedetto Croce, whose works Johanson introduced and translated into Swedish. In his view, aesthetics should precede logic, since individual perception precedes any understanding of a pure concept. I argue that Johanson’s aphorisms constitute a political statement, situating the individual truth at the centre of experience, and defending the need to take personal differences into account in order to heal the social ”organism” of society. To think with all your senses is to accrue historical knowledge; an aesthetic method with political implications.

Den svenska 1840-talsromanen som nationell kartografi2016Inngår i: Samlaren: Tidskrift för forskning om svensk och annan nordisk litteratur, ISSN 0348-6133, E-ISSN 2002-3871, Vol. 137, s. 58-86Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish novel of the 1840s as national cartography

The Swedish novel of the 1840s maps the nation. Whereas the novels of the 1830s advocate a predominantly cultural nationalism, the nationalism in the novels of the 1840s connects to the national territory. Inspired by Franco Moretti, a map is used as an analytical tool marking out travel routes in Sweden and Norway in 15 novels by the best-selling authors Fredrika Bremer (1801–1865), Sophie von Knorring (1797–1848), Emilie Flygare-Carlén (1807–1892), and C.J.L. Almqvist (1793–1866). The map shows that the national territory is unevenly covered: most of the novels are set in the provinces surrounding the lake Vättern, possibly creating a new water centre for the nation, while Dalecarlia, later to become the ”core province” of Sweden, is still considered too wild and remote. Furthermore, the map shows that borders become the focus of attention as territory gains importance. Geography teaching is a recurrent theme in the novels, and the national map is even portrayed as the body of Mother Svea—national boundaries conjure up an eroticised unity, a body evoking love. Nevertheless, the imagined geographies connecting cultural nationalism to territory also have the paradoxical effect of constructing the provinces as separate national communities. Therefore, external as well as internal borders appear as important narrative sites. Nationalist thought at the beginning of the 19th century was often part of a liberal movement developing the idea of citizenship, and in these novels the borders instigate narratives of citizenship. The borders intensify the promises of the nation-state to the citizen: the border is the site where bodies that do not comply with societal norms can find a place to make their contribution to the nation. However, the border is also the site where citizenship is contested, as unstable law enforcement exposes the characters to lethal violence.

Guds rike i 1800-talet – en politisk utopi2019Inngår i: Framtiden i samtiden / [ed] Mikael Kurkiala, Skellefteå: Artos & Norma bokförlag, 2019, Vol. 4, s. 25-39Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Jerusalem in Every Soul: Temporalities of Faith in Fredrika Bremer's and Harriet Martineau's Travel Narratives of Palestine2020Inngår i: Time and Temporalities in European Travel Writing / [ed] Paula Henrikson, Christina Kullberg, Routledge, 2020, s. 182-209Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter examines the intersection between the temporality of the modern nation and temporalities of Christian faith in travelogues by two nineteenth-century female travellers to Palestine: Harriet Martineau's Eastern Life: Present and Past (1848) and Fredrika Bremer's Life in the Old World (1860–62). Drawing on pilgrimage studies and research on the temporalitiy of nationalism by Homi K. Bhabha and Anthony D- Smith, this chapter focuses on the different temporalities inscribed in the landscape. Protestant ideas about the progress of humankind, together with a teleological model of historical development, governed Martineau's and Bremer's perceptions as travellers and contributed to their Orientalist conceptualisations as well as their interpretations of the Palestinian geography. However, due to their differing temporalities of faith, their ideas about the Palestinian landscape diverged: while Jerusalem was quintessential for modern nationalism according to Bremer, the city was merely of historical interest to Martineau. Whereas Martineau developed a highly controversial theory of an "Evolution of faith", Bremer's theory relied on Kairos and developed what I have called an "allegorical geography", considering the spread of the Christian gospel to be prefigured by topography.

    Abstract [en]

The production of loss organises nationalist thought through redistribution of emotions. In this chapter, the mechanisms at work in the production of loss are investigated by exploring the shifting emotions attached to Sweden’s loss of Finland to Russia in 1809, starting with Esaias Tegnér’s poem “Svea” (1811), and continuing with two literary works from the mid-nineteenth century, G. H. Mellin’s pamphlet Sweriges Sista Strid: Fantastiskt Nattstycke (Sweden’s Last Battle: Fantasmagoric Night Piece, 1840) and Fredrika Bremer’s sentimental novel Syskonlif (Brothers and Sisters, 1848). A coda highlights Selma Lagerlöf’s biography on Zacharis Topelius (1920), which recalls the grief over the loss of Finland as a lost sense of loss. How was territorial loss imagined? That is, what exactly was lost? What were the emotions associated with the loss of Finland? Emotions “stick”, in Sara Ahmed’s term, to different objects from virtues to people to landscape, and the order of what Barbara H. Rosenwein calls “emotional sequences” are reversed with different outcome for the production of loss. The novelistic treatment allowed for the elaboration of corporeal metaphors for nations; the interrelation between literary genre and bodies proves to be an important aspect in the perception of key concept of nationalist thought, such as national territory, national identity, and national feelings.

    Nils and the Social Mother as a Migrating Goose2018Inngår i: TijdSchrift voor Skandinavistiek, ISSN 0168-2148, E-ISSN 1875-9505, Vol. 36, nr 2, s. 117-124Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This contribution explores the ideals of citizenship in Selma Lagerlöf’s Nils Holgersson’s Wonderful Journey through Sweden (1906-1907).1 The social morals taught by Akka the goose – possibly one of the world’s most famous female leaders – influenced Swedish school children and children around the world for decades. The analysis shows that Akka is an example of Ellen Key’s concept of the ‘Social Mother’, promoting early ‘folk ideology’. Taking the cue from Sara Ahmed’s theory of ‘affective economies’, I investigate the function of fear in building a nation. A comparison with Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book (1894-1895) makes clear that although power struggle is a common theme in these two children’s books, fear has an equally important but opposing role in each book in the founding of society. In The Jungle Book, fear installs a constitutional order and guarantees Man’s supremacy over the animals, while fear in Nils Holgersson fosters community across different species; in Lagerlöf’s affective economy, fear does indeed establish boundaries, but also functions as a means to transgression and as a source of social virtues. Contrary to Berggren and Trägårdh’s claim that independence is at the core of ‘the Swedish ideology’, the experience of dependence and fear is necessary to achieve a responsible form of independence. Nils’s progress reflects a psychologically informed process of development of moral virtues in several steps, initially motivated by self-preservation, then self-assertion, habit, and finally by an ethics of love. The story also portrays different forms of government, opting for democratic rule that is intent on creating a home for the people. The nation-building function of fear is to balance the power struggle for a citizen’s right to recognition with an insight into the vulnerability of life and the need for transgressive love.

    Abstract [en]

With the climate crisis, there is a necessity for people to live more sustainably. One way to do this is to change our lifestyle and the choices we make in our homes. The aim of this master thesis is to investigate the gender aspect of the “sustainable lifestyle” by looking at families with an ambition to live more environmentally conscious. If the environmentally friendly lifestyle for people in general is basically about taking advantage of what we have, making better decisions about food and other things that are linked to housework, something that women to a large extent take greater responsibility for, how can we look at environmentally friendly living from a gender perspective? I have collected my data through qualitative, semi-structured interviews with six heterosexual women in Swedish families. The study shows that the female informants take a greater responsibility than their male partners for the family to live environmentally friendly. This research also shows that the sustainable lifestyle is time consuming and that this mostly affects women due to their greater responsibility for housework. This has implications for the gender equality of the household. All the interviewed women thought gender equality was important, but the study show that they sometimes must choose between being equal with their partners and being sustainable.

    Abstract [en]

Ranging from the late 1880s to the late 1970s children with dis/abilities were orderlyinstitutionalized in Sweden due to lack of accessibility and aids in the surrounding society. The aim of this thesis is to discuss how ableist discourse of dis/ability and gender interacted with materiality, such as buildings, clothes and objects, in the institutions and how it affected the everyday lives of women who grew up there, a concept previously unexplored in a Swedish context. Using a qualitative method interviews were carried out with women who grew up in various institutions in Sweden from the 1930s to 1970s. The interviews were analysed using a crip theoretical understanding of dis/ability and ableism paired with Barad’s post humanist understanding of matter as both product of and producer of discourse. The analysis show that matter was created, used and understood in a constant intra-action with ableist discourse, confining, controlling and subduing the women. Matter and the use of it functioned as a tool for upholding ableism, creating a colonial structure of medical access to the children’s bodies. Hence, the use of matter can be understood as acts of ableist rhetoric created to signalize and uphold ableist standards. Such ableist rhetoric can be said to carry on into the contemporary Swedish understanding of dis/ability, making evident the on-going objectification and medicalization of people with dis/ability today and its intersection with discourses of gender and sexuality.

The Ritual Construction of Fetal Personhood: A Voyage through the Gendering of the Unborn in Peruvian Baby Showers2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this research is to analyse how gender is ‘done’, represented and reproduced in a Peruvian baby shower ritual. The study is situated geographically in the urban Andean setting of Cusco, and theoretically, in a feminist framework combining an ethnomethodological ‘doing gender’ perspective, anchored in social interactions, with a linguistic performativity approach, as formulated by Judith Butler. In the latter, gender is understood as performed through discursive practices of iterability. The ethnographic material, collected from two baby showers and additional interviews, demonstrate several ways and sites in which gender is done and performed in the Cusqeanean baby shower. This occurs, for instance, by the means of gendered gifts, decorations and performances of gender-crossing and hyperbolised displays of masculinity, femininity and sexuality.

Furthermore, to help make sense of the notions of prenatal gender, as well as the strictly gendered cultural norms for invitation cards, decoration and gift-making, which made me unknowingly brake conventions when bringing gender-neutral wooden toys to a Peruvian baby shower, I draw on theorisation of fetal personhood. Adapting van Gennep’s (2004[1909]) concept, I propose that the baby shower could be conceptualised as a rite of passage, in which the unborn transcends from the state of fetus to a gendered baby. The acts of naming and attributing gender in the baby shower ritual, I argue, are requisites for incorporating the child into the society, as family members and, ultimately, as human beings. The baby shower can, thus, be regarded a crucial site for the ‘social birth’ of the Cusqueanean baby.

Özz Nûjens ståuppkomik som diskursiv praktik: Humor, PK och självmotsägelser2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Humour has for a long time been regarded as something unproblematic that in general shouldn’t be taken seriously, and humour research has mainly focused its positive functions and effects. However, humour is indeed a social and discursive practise that, just like others, have social implications. The aim of this essay is, informed by an intersectional perspective, to problematize and critically examine stand-up comedy as discursive practise and to make visible how humour build upon dominating discourses in society. The aim is also to examine the self-contradictory dimension of the jokes. In a critical discourse analysis of Özz Nûjen’s show Dålig stämning (2013), using PC (political correctness) as an overall analytical framework, the analytical categories ‘women’ as well as ‘ethnicity and culture’ are focused. My conclusion is that in all cases of Nûjen’s prerogative of interpretation, ‘stupidity’, as the lowest common denominator, sticks to symbols, bodies and phenomenon that are associated with something deviant or negative. By what is not expressed, a white, normative Swedish PC-identity is constructed as the abstract, preferable subject. Nûjen’s stand-up comedy, i.a. in expressions of self-contradiction, proves to mainly reinforce social norms. Consequently, negative preconceptions and biased representations of reality are cemented. Though Nûjen does contribute to sociocultural change to some extent, the elaborations of the jokes in most cases prove to sustain the social order. A renegotiation of identities is therefore made strictly limited. However, in one case, Nûjen does challenge the notion of identities as fixed and essential, when renegotiating the master status and construction of “The ethnical Other woman”.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the perspectives and lived experiences of seven blind men in their embodied tactile, audial and olfactory sensations and experiences, and situating their identities in both societal and historical conditions and social discourses and prejudices in regards to masculinity, blindness and disabled bodies. Through theories on embodiment, phenomenology, gender performativity, crip theory and intersectional theory, studies on blind gendered experiences, historical research on blind life experiences in Sweden, and linguistic and cultural representations of blindness, this study examines how the subjectivity of each participant is created in the meeting and interactions between the individual embodied experience and the societal intersubjective experience of living in a blind body.

The participants regard masculinity as a collection of norms, attitudes and expectations, that is characterized by a competitive social dominance, scarce or lack of emotional expressions, egocentrism and disregard for other, and being sexually active and successful. Masculinity is expressed through a range of embodied performative actions such as audibly, tactile, olfactory, and visually.

The participants The participants express a societal pressure on performing masculinity, as living as a blind subject and not adhering to assigned gender norms have profound effects and consequences on the individuals options and opportunities to form both professional and intimate relationships, and thus accelerate risks of experiencing unemployment, stigmatization, and social isolation. The rigid frames of masculinity blind men live under is closely intertwined with their socioeconomic status in society, and the empowerment and broader representation of disabled bodies och subjects is the key to a more open untethered blind expression and understanding of gender.

    Gender and competition in adolescence: task matters2014Inngår i: Experimental Economics, ISSN 1386-4157, E-ISSN 1573-6938, Vol. 17, nr 1, s. 154-172Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

We look at gender differences among adolescents in Sweden in preferences for competition, altruism and risk. For competitiveness, we explore two different tasks that differ in associated stereotypes. We find no gender difference in competitiveness when comparing performance under competition to that without competition. We further find that boys and girls are equally likely to self-select into competition in a verbal task, but that boys are significantly more likely to choose to compete in a mathematical task. This gender gap diminishes and becomes non-significant when we control for actual performance, beliefs about relative performance, and risk preferences, or for beliefs only. Girls are also more altruistic and less risk taking than boys.

Diversity of Childcare Politics in the Nordic Welfare States2023Inngår i: The Oxford Handbook of Family Policy over the Life Course: A Life-Course Perspective / [ed] Mary Daly; Birgit Pfau-Effinger; Neil Gilbert; Douglas J. Abstract [en]

The chapter examines the development of publicly financed childcare (PFC) and cash for care in Finland, Norway, and Sweden, from the 1960s until today. These three countries show quite different development trajectories over time. In all three, but especially Finland and Sweden, women entered the labor market before the PFC services had developed and childcare was initially arranged privately. Informal family day care was eventally replaced by formal family day carers being employed by the municipality. This happened less in Norway, where women entered the labor market later. Preschool activity then expanded over time, first in Sweden and somewhat later in Finland and Norway. Over time preschools became the dominant form of childcare, but the prevalence of cash for care differentiates the situation in the three countries, especially regarding children's age at start of PFC. Today, Finland is the country where cash for care is still widely used and children start later in preschools. The chapter also describes the comparative cost and subsidized fees of PFC, when various parental groups got access to PFC, and indicators of quality in the three countries. The authors draw the conclusion that the motivation to expand PFC to facilitate women's work has today been replaced by a motivation centered around children's needs, a move in which informal caregivers have been replaced by educated preschool teachers.

“En jävla freakshow”: Representationer av maskulinitet i svensk wrestling2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to examine representations of masculinity in the activities of a local professional wrestling promotion. After briefly outlining what professional wrestling is, the study draws on a body on feminist and intersectional theory which critiques the notion of gender as a binary and essential category. The material comprises 10 recorded shows and oth- er material published on Sthlm Wrestling’s website between 2010 and 2013, and is analyzed using a qualitative methodology derived from cultural studies. The thesis argues that there are many different types of masculinities in the narrative, which are constructed in relation to different power hierarchies such as ethnicity, class, sex and sexuality. The few female wrestlers are marginalized, but not sexualized as in the U.S. context. The heels (rule-breakers) are found on the borders of social and cultural categories, and there is an explicit SM-narrative present.

    Abstract [en]

This article examines how the war in Ukraine and the subsequent re-orientation of Swedish security and defense policy leading up to a NATO-application, has been discussed in Swedish public debate. We ask what work gender does in the sense-making of the war and the changes in security policy. Departing from feminist theories of security and gendered protection, the study discusses the ambiva-lent ways in which gender and the trope of Sweden as a gender equal nation is negotiated in the media (print media and television) and by policy makers. The gendered imaginaries of masculinist protection and the vulnerability of women and children legitimize violence as the most adequate way to respond to this new situation. Gender is used to depoliticize security politics and to frame militarization as unavoidable. In this context, gender equality is both seen as a value worthy of protection and as an internal threat weakening men, and inclining women to object to the military responses suggested. We argue that the production of masculinity and militarization promotes a security ideology imbued with violence, hierarchies, and control.

Den ojämställda försäkringen: Kvinnors upplevelser av föräldraledigheten2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The distribution of paid parental leave in Sweden today remains unequal despite several political reforms. In addition, previous research shows that this unequal distribution leads to negative health effects for the women who use the majority of the parental leave. The aim of this study is therefore to create an understanding of why women takes out the majority of the paid parental leave. Four interviews have been made with women who have done just that. By analyzing the material through feminist post-structuralism and queer theory, the women’s discursive understanding of their own situation is made visible. Three themes emerge: the first theme shows how an essentialist understanding of the woman is ruling despite the fact that the women on many occasions also demonstrate a constructivist understanding. The second theme highlights a discourse where the women are both expected to take out the majority of the parental leave while also being responsible for an equal distribution, which is impossible to fulfill. The last theme shows how two aspects are made invisible, first, the problems that arise due to an uneven distribution and, second, that an equal distribution of the parental leave is possible. These themes are understood as normalization processes and a way to maintain the power structure between the sexes.

Internationella Kvinnodagen: En intersektionell analys av dagens uppmärksammande i Sverige 20172017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Nyckelord: Intersektionalitet, Internationella Kvinnodagen, 8:e mars, politiska ritualer,

    Abstract [sv]

"You love me. Real or not real?": En queer tematisk analys av relationer och sexualiteter i Suzanne Collins Hunger Games2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis aims to highlight, analyse and problematize how sexualities and relationships are constructed as normative and deviant in the Hunger Games trilogy through the character Katniss Everdeen. With this analysis, the thesis aims to further elucidate the pluralism of meaning within literature as a contribution to the field of feminist cultural studies. Queer theory and queer temporality studies have been used to identify and discuss concepts such as the heterosexual matrix, monogamy and mononormativity, polyamory and other marginalized sexualities. A thematic queer reading serves as a methodological approach to the material to enable searching for queer themes in the series.

The thesis shows how heterosexuality and monogamy are constructed and portrayed as normative and compulsory, where all other expressions of sexuality are presented as deviant and thereby can be view as different expressions of queer temporality.

Farm worker identities contested and reimagined: gender, race/ethnicity and nationality in the post-strike moment2017Inngår i: Anthropology Southern Africa, ISSN 2332-3256, Vol. 40, nr 4, s. 248-260Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In 2012/2013, widespread rural unrest — commonly referred to as the “farm worker strike” — broke out in the Western Cape, South Africa. This exposed not only poor salaries and working conditions, but also the disparity between representations of farm workers as too restrained by paternalism to dare challenge farmers and the open defiance displayed by protesters. Initial participants were identified as pertaining to categories of workers that for long were relegated to the discursive shadows in representations of Western Cape farm workers: seasonal and casual workers residing primarily off-farm, out of whom many were black South African women and migrants from neighbouring countries. Consequently, they were dismissed by some as not being (real) farm workers. This article explores the protests as a moment when contestations and renegotiations of the meaning of the category “farm worker” were brought to the surface. It suggests that paying attention to intersecting power relations of gender, race/ethnicity and nationality may illuminate silences and exclusions in representations of farm workers.
