Learning, teaching and assessment of second foreign languages in Swedish lower secondary school – dilemmas and prospects2019Ingår i: Apples - Journal of Applied Language Studies, ISSN 1457-9863, Vol. 13, nr 1, s. 7-26Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents an overview of second foreign language (SFL) education in Sweden, especially at lower secondary level. It offers a survey of the historical development of the study of other languages than English as well as a reflection over the current state of the subject. Currently, there is a shortage of research on the circumstances and conditions of the learning, teaching and assessment of the Swedish school subject Modern languages, as well as on young people’s proficiency in other languages than English in Sweden. In order to contribute to a knowledge base for further research, the current paper reviews work considering the Swedish context concerning: a) frame factors, policy issues and organization of SFL studies b) attitudes towards plurilingualism and SFL motivation, c) teacher education and recruitment policies, and d) levels of attainment at the end of compulsory school. Throughout the paper, the European context is also taken into account. The paper ends with a discussion of the general status of the subject Modern languages in Swedish school and society, the fact that this subject is not mandatory, and the consistently high dropout rate that characterizes the current situation.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

This study examines how the Swedish translations of Germinal transpose the miner’s world and deliver Zola’s poetics. Despite some losses in form and content, the first translation (1885) is surprisingly accurate. A non-censored re-edition was published in 1971. However, no complete and fully correct translation of Germinal seems to exist in Swedish.

Les usages du dégagisme dans la campagne des élections présidentielles de 2017 du mouvement La France insoumise2019Ingår i: Political Discourses at the Extremes: Expressions of Populism in Romance-Speaking Countries / [ed] Françoise Sullet-Nylander, María Bernal, Christophe Premat, Malin Roitman, Stockholm: Stockholm University Press, 2019, s. 279-300Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [fr]

Le Clézio, ISSN 1969-0398, Vol. 12, s. 45-56Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

The ≪Passione Mai≫ is a Passion narrative which harmonizes the four Gospels. The text is preserved in a fourteenth-century manuscript of the Angelo Mai Library in Bergamo (Italy), and its prologue clearly shows that it was intended for reading aloud on Good Friday, perhaps in a brotherhood of laymen. The study argues that the ≪Passione Mai≫ is a translation from Latin and analyses its language, identifying it as ancient Venetian. Nonetheless, the language shows a few non-Venetian features, together with a Latin influence.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

The article proposes to elaborate an anthropology of the Cameroonian State in order to understand the political stakes of the last presidential election of 2018 and the failure of the multiparty system introduced at the beginning of the 1990s. From a postcolonial perspective, it seems that Cameroon reorganized itself around a unitary Francophone State to consolidate the current power of the elite. The article describes the mechanisms of this reification by relying on the constitutional texts and the institutions protecting the status quo. It also discusses the geopolitical challenges of the terrorist group Boko Haram and the crisis of the English-speaking part. These threats tend to strengthen the unitary and security State to the detriment of a political debate on the future of Cameroon.

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [fr]

    Abstract [en]

The synthetic superlative -ÍSSIMUS in Latin survived in Italian, whereas it was borrowed in the Romance languages on the Iberian Peninsula and in French during the Renaissance. This suffix has been very frequent in these languages with the exception of French. In this language it has been accepted merely when used in titles. Condemned by grammarians, the suffix has thus been quite rare in French literature. The present study shows however that in the database Frantext, which comprises mostly literary texts, nearly 1,400 occurrences of words with the suffix -issime are found, rarissime and richissime being the most frequent (apart from titles). But with the emergence of new media, it seems that the suffix has become much more frequent in French. These adjectives are found mainly in areas like politics, sports, travels, adult movies and in comments by web visitors as shown in this study.

Metaficción historiográfica y autoficción: Diferentes compromisos con la referencialidad en Estação das Chuvas de José Eduardo Agualusa y Soldados de Salamina de Javier Cercas2019Ingår i: Interlitteraria, ISSN 1406-0701, E-ISSN 2228-4729, Vol. 24, nr 2, s. 479-494Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article offers a comparative analysis of the novels Estação das Chuvas (1996) by the Angolan writer José Eduardo Agualusa (born in 1960) and Soldados de Salamina (2001) of the Spaniard Javier Cercas (born in 1962). The two novels belong to different geographical and cultural contexts. Nevertheless, a common sensibility – due perhaps to the same generational affiliation or to the prevalence of topics in force in the 1990s – makes evident the emergence of both a historical theme and the presence of a subject involved in historical processes. Ultimately, in both novels, we come across a subject that makes history although in quite different ways: involved firsthand in historical events with tragic implications, in the case of Agualusa, and absorbed in a reflection on apparently distant events in the case of Cercas. However, the result of the emphasis on the presence of a subjectivity within historical processes causes the two novels to share a common element, that is, a double generic affiliation. Both Estação das Chuvas and Soldados de Salamina actually share semantic traits that make it possible to classify them at the same time as autofictional novels and historiographic metafictions.

Despite their common architectural matrix, the two novels represent two very different expressions within these genres. This manifests itself at different levels: first, the treatment of the autofictional character and, secondly, the treatment of the other characters. Through the analysis of the characters that populate these two novels, I will try to show how the two writers adopt divergent attitudes regarding the degree of referentiality in their works and how they end up proposing two different poetic options. In the analysis of the characters, I consider it useful to introduce a taxonomy that, in addition to including already existing types (referential, historical, fictitious characters), introduces other types hopefully useful to the study of the currently abundant number of fictions that, through an ambiguous narrative pact, are located between fiction and faction.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Jew, by Bernardo Santareno and The Sleep of Reason, by Antonio Buero Vallejo: two different creative strategies for censorship

It is plausible that the Portuguese playwright Bernardo Santareno and his Spanish counterpart Antonio Buero Vallejo represent two different - or even opposite - attitudes regarding the censorship of the Portuguese and Spanish regimes in the 1960s. Two texts are analyzed in this article: Santareno’s O Judeu and Buero Vallejo‘s El sueño de la razón, which have been chosen because of the contrast between analogies and divergences that arise when evaluating the historical period represented in the two dramas.

From the methodological point of view, I will approach the textual aspect of the two dramas in order to highlight the analogies and, above all, the semantic-syntactic differences between them, later I will try to highlight the cultural political context that might have conditioned the different aesthetic options of the two writers.

On 'Crisis' and the pessimism of disciplinary discourse in foreign languages: An Australian perspective2019Ingår i: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 113, nr 2, s. 40-58Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This article investigates how the disciplinary discourse on the contemporary state of foreign languages in universities hastily refers to these disciplines as being in 'crisis'. This practice is nearly as old as the Humanities itself, and has been employed periodically since at least the 1940s. Despite a period of increasing foreign language enrolment in the first decade of the twenty-first century in Australia, calls of 'crisis' came from across the languages sector. In tracing the use of the term 'crisis', we show how the sector has long been characterised by such alarmist terminology, even when reality suggests otherwise. The article traces this usage in the recent disciplinary discourse in foreign languages. A topical report of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, which shows increased language enrolment over the period 2002-11, leads one to believe that things at universities may not be as bad as first thought. This finding has implications for language enrolments not just in Australia, but around the world.

Ongoing change in post-independence Sao Tome: The use of rhotics as a marker of national identity among young speakers of Santomean Portuguese2019Ingår i: Language Variation and Change, ISSN 0954-3945, E-ISSN 1469-8021, Vol. 31, nr 1, s. 21-42Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines variation in the use of rhotics in Santomean Portuguese. In Portuguese, the distribution of rhotics is determined by syllable structure (Bonet & Mascaro, 1997). However, the emerging variety of Portuguese spoken in Sao Tome and Principe diverges from the standard norm and shows great variability in its use of rhotics; specifically, Santomeans often use a strong-R in positions that require a weak-r in European and Brazilian Portuguese. Sociolinguistic interviews with 56 speakers from the capital of Sao Tome and Principe and its surroundings provide 5287 data points for analysis. Based on the apparent-time construct (Bailey, 2004; Bailey et al., 1991), variation patterns show a language change in progress in the use of the strong-R, with younger speakers using it more frequently. Results also reveal the emergence of rhotic fricatives in the speech of Santomeans born after the independence of the country.

    Parafrasering och språkinlärning2019Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

Political Discourses at the Extremes: Expressions of Populism in Romance-Speaking Countries2019Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The authors of this edited volume focus on the emergence of populist discourses, coming from  movements or parties from Romance-speaking countries in Europe and in Latin America. By combining  linguistics, social and political sciences in a discourse analytical approach, the sixteen papers  enlighten the mechanisms behind populist discourses yielding from different socio-cultural and  political contexts. The common denominator of the studies is the focus on the discursive and  rhetorical characteristics of recently emerged movements of populism in both continents.  Investigating expressions of these political movements is highly relevant in today’s society, where  the growing number of populist discourses has become a pre-eminent issue, alongside people’s  increasing insecurity regarding future political and environmental challenges. The primary audience  of this volume are researchers working in the fields of political discourse analysis; however, this  book may benefit anybody with interest in language in politics.

Presuppositions, again2019Ingår i: Philosophical Insights into Pragmatics / [ed] Piotr Stalmaszczyk, Berlin: Walter de Gruyter, 2019Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Presupposition is surely one of the most debated notions in the linguistic and philosophical literature. Historically, there are two main theoretical approaches to presuppositions. According to the first one, the semantic view, presuppositions are semantic implications, that is, truth-conditional relations between propositions and statements. In this sense, presuppositions are considered properties of sentences and a presupposed proposition is a necessary condition for the truth of the presupposing statement. In the second approach, the pragmatic view, presuppositions are not properties of sentences but rather properties of speakers or of linguistic performances given a certain context of utterance. From this view, a presupposed proposition is a condition for the felicitous utterance of the presupposing statement in a given context.

Traditionally, it is assumed that semantic presuppositions differ from classical entailments, as presuppositions, unlike classical entailments, project under negation: if we compare a context of entailment to a context of presupposition, we should see that entailments, but not presuppositions, disappear under negation. This presentation aims to propose a revision of the semantic notion of presupposition. I argue that most standard cases of presuppositions are classical entailments. Moreover, I claim that all presuppositions that are classical entailments are also pragmatic presuppositions, while not all pragmatic presuppositions are also classical entailments. I contend that factive verbs offer a paradigmatic example of this distinction, as the factivity related to know is semantic, hence a classical entailment, whereas the factivity related to regret is merely pragmatic. This claim stands in contrast to Karttunen’s (1971) well-known analysis of factive verbs and his distinction between true factives (that is, emotive factives) and semifactives (that is, cognitive factives).

Quantity of target language contact in study abroad and knowledge of multiword expressions: A Usage-Based approach to L2 development2019Ingår i: Study Abroad Research in Second Language Acquisition and International Education, ISSN 2405-5522, Vol. 4, nr 2, s. 145-167Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study takes a Usage-Based approach to the learning of French multiword expressions (MWEs) in Study Abroad (SA). MWEs are conventionalized form-meaning mappings, for example du coup (‘and so’) and en fait (‘actually’), and are assumed to be learned through repeated exposure. Based on this assumption, the study adopted a pretest/posttest design to explore how quantity of out-of-class target-language (TL) contact predicted the development of MWE knowledge among 41 Swedish students during a semester in France. MWE knowledge was assessed by a modified cloze test based on transcriptions of informal language use (www.clapi.fr) and TL contact information was obtained through the Language Engagement Questionnaire (McManus, Mitchell, & Tracy-Ventura, 2014). Contrary to expectations, the findings showed that quantity of out-of-class TL contact did not predict gains in MWE knowledge and add further counterevidence for the role of sheer quantity of TL contact for linguistic development in SA.

Quick facts and uncontrolled sources can lead to plagiarism2019Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Source criticism is a challenge in higher education as many students (often freshmen) do not pay sufficient attention to the diversity of sources, they want quick facts that they can reuse. By not being able to distinguish the quality of texts on the net, they clip and paste sentences that they collect in different documents. It is not possible to substitute academic learning with patch-writing strategies. At the same time, teachers cannot promote critical thinking without giving some examples and advices to students. As a matter of fact, it is necessary to have an attitude concerning the platforms of quick facts like Wikipedia or other encyclopaedias. Based on empirical results concerning students´ attitudes, the presentation is an opportunity to work on different examples of quick facts to see the possible strategies to guide students in a scientific way. The document contains slides on pedagogical strategies to avoid plagiarism in higher education. It was used in a workshop given to scholars at Stockholm University.

Registers of African-derived lexicon in Uruguay: etymologies, demography and semantic change2019Ingår i: Zeitschrift für Romanische Philologie, ISSN 0049-8661, E-ISSN 1865-9063, Vol. 135, nr 1, s. 223-255Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The present paper deals with 82 words of possible African origin registered in Uruguay by Ildefonso Pereda Valdés and Rolando Laguarda Trías between 1937 and 1965. Many of the lexical items were probably introduced by enslaved Africans brought to the region during the 18th and 19th centuries. Evidence shows that most of the words are apparently shared with varieties of Spanish outside the Rio de la Plata region, and most of them also appear in neighboring Argentina and Brazil. Furthermore, the African-derived lexicon is often used to denominate the ‘other’ with respect to people and social behaviors, and most of these loanwords are nouns with possible origins in Bantu languages spoken in West-Central Africa, which corresponds to the available demographic data.

    Abstract [fr]

Stades imaginaires dans Barbe Bleue d’Amélie Nothomb2019Ingår i: Littératures de l’imaginaire / [ed] Katarzyna Gadomska, Agnieszka Loska, Katowice: Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego (University of Silesia Press) , 2019, s. 115-127Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the notion of the imaginary in Barbe bleue by Nothomb in two complementary ways. Sartre’s phenomenological vision of the imaginary constitutes the methodological fundament for exploring initially the condition for the imaginary to occur. As an act of the individual consciousness to be comprehended by others, the imaginary requires the activation of a common field of reference directed towards the object of representation. It is suggested that this faculty could be described as a conceptual framing of the object. The specific thematic of the imaginary in the narrative (i.e. creation, idealisation, alchemy, liberation, transformation) is then linked to this framing as well as to the discursive mode which structures the story, a mode based on plausible actions taking place in a coherent, contemporary society. The imaginative writing of Nothomb is seen partly as the consequence of this latter choice of composition, with the need to introduce new motifs and to rationally justify the actions, partly as her proper creation of cunning stylistics, which generates the reader’s hermeneutic activity and even engenders the risk of creating an imaginary interpretation of her texts.

This volume discusses medieval volgarizzamenti of historical, religious, and profane writings. All fourteen studies presented here recognise the fact that in the late Middle Ages, these texts were an important meeting point for elitist and popular culture which mutually stimulated each other. At the same time, different worlds of knowledge came together as history, mythology, hagiography, and biblical narration were considered to form one entity.

Stratégies de désignation dans le discours politique catholique et protestant pendant les guerres de religion: le tournant décisif de la conversion d’Henri IV (1593)2019Ingår i: Bergen Language and Lingustics Studies, ISSN 1892-2449, E-ISSN 1892-2449, Vol. 10, nr 1, artikel-id 15Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the strategies of designation in the political discourse of Huguenots on the one hand, and Ultra-Catholics on the other hand, during the period preceding and following the conversion of Henry IV (1593). Using Discourse Analysis as a theoretical and methodological framework, this study focuses on how the different actors (parties, the King) are presented in these discourses.

The corpus is composed of two texts, both published in 1593. The first one is by the Duke of Mayenne, leader of the Catholic League, and aims to reunify all Catholics within the kingdom in order to annihilate Protestantism. It is written before the conversion of Henry IV to Catholicism and expresses the frustration of Ultra-Catholics at having a protestant king. The second text is by Philippe Duplessis-Mornay on behalf of the Huguenots’ political assemblies. It is a letter addressed to King Henry IV just after his conversion to Catholicism in 1593. This letter expresses the frustration of Huguenots as their protector converted to Catholicism. Analyzing the use of referential expressions according to the constructivist conception of the reference developed by Apothéloz and Reichler-Béguelin (1995), this study considers the referents as discourse-objects and the talking subject as acting on these objects. The study is qualitative and examines the different functions (argumentative, social, polyphonic) of the categorizations and recategorizations in order to underscore the discursive strategies of the authors. This paper argues that there are similarities in the way the different actors are presented in the two texts but that the perspective is essentially religious in the text by the Catholic League whereas the perspective is more political in the text by the Huguenots.

Testing factivity in Italian: Experimental evidence for the hypothesis that Italian sapere is ambiguous2019Ingår i: Language sciences (Oxford), ISSN 0388-0001, E-ISSN 1873-5746, Vol. 72, s. 93-103Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In linguistics and in the philosophy of language it is standardly assumed that know is a factive verb, meaning that a sentence such as X knows that p, when uttered in its positive declarative form, presupposes, in fact entails, the truth of its complement. A problem for this analysis is the fact that the verb know can be used non-factively in contexts where it is evident that the proposition expressed by the subordinate clause is not true. In order to account for non-factive uses of know, two main solutions have been advanced in the literature. Hazlett (2009, 2010, 2012) proposes that know is not semantically factive and a sentence such as X knows that p does not entail, but only pragmatically implies p. On the other hand, Tsohatzidis (2012) argues that know is lexically ambiguous between a factive and a non-factive sense: when know is used in its factive sense, a sentence such as X knows that p entails p, whereas, when know occurs in its non-factive sense, it does not.

As shown in recent works by Colonna Dahlman (2015, 2016, 2017b), the phenomenon at issue―the possibility for a speaker to use know in cases where the proposition expressed by the clause embedded under ‘knows’ is not true―is not unique to English, but occurs, for instance, also in Italian. We carried out a Truth Judgment Task to test the hypothesis that the Italian lexical item ‘sa’ (‘knows’) is ambiguous. Our findings are consistent with the lexical ambiguity hypothesis, and cannot be explained by Hazlett’s pragmatic solution.

    The case for communication rights: A rights-based approach to media development2019Ingår i: Global Media and Communication, ISSN 1742-7665, E-ISSN 1742-7673, Vol. 15, nr 3, s. 323-343Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

From the 1980s, international organizations have devised strategies to develop national media systems to make them more diverse and inclusive so as to both exhibit and preserve local cultures. However, these strategies have not always been successful since information has become a commodity, because the interests of private actors prevent equal access to communication rights. This article outlines a perspective on media development from a rights-based approach, derived from a critique of dominant perspectives from international organizations with a strong focus on technology provisions. The article argues for media development based on the right to communication as an alternative to commodification of information. Through examples from Brazil and Kenya, the article illustrates that viewing communication as a basic right can lead to the inclusion of more voices in the public discourse. In addition, a model for media development is proposed, suggesting that the state and national civil society play a significant role in promoting diverse national public spheres.

    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on the analysis of a specific vocabulary, possibly the remains of a mining language spoken by descendants of Africans. It analyzes 149 lexical items that were registered in the 1920s in a rural region of Minas Gerais, near the city of Diamantina. Based on earlier historical and linguistic studies, as well as on dictionaries of relevant African languages, the lexical study aims to analyze 149 words and expressions in order to verify the etymologies, and determine whether they fit the demographic data available on the origins of the slave population in this area. The second aim is to analyze the distribution of the lexical items in different semantic domains and word classes and compare the observed tendencies, as well as other linguistic characteristics and social functions, with other mining languages and/or similar Afro-Brazilian and Afro-European varieties. The results indicate that Umbundu maintained a high status in the area, and that this variety was not limited to mining activities, but was probably used in everyday life as a secret code that was part of the strategies of resistance among slaves.

The Hellenistic and early Imperial evidence of χρεία (chreia) in the sense of anecdote is summarized with the aim of completeness. The special rhetorical sense of this common Greek word is discussed, and a new explanation of the semantic derivation is offered: it is suggested that the sense of anecdote derives from the earlier sense of dealings rather than utility. The proposal that Metrocles or the Cynics invented the micro-genre of chreiai is strongly criticized. It is to the Socratics more generally we should look for its origins, if the genre must be supposed to have originated among philosophers, which is not certain.

The Geopolitics of the Catholic Church in Latin America2019Ingår i: Territory, Politics, Governance, ISSN 2162-2671Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This study analyses the geopolitical dimension of the Catholic Church’s activity in Latin America. This involves ideas related to political control, administration and power over territory. It is also related to the pastoral activity of the Church. As shown, the geopolitics of the Church is related to its internal organization as well as in its relations with states and society. The creation and adaptation of geopolitical visions are made through internal processes in connection with political and cultural forces around the Church. This is identified as the religeopolitical scope of the Catholic Church, analysed in this study from a long-term perspective. During colonial times, the geopolitical vision was linked to consolidating global imperial structures. After the shock of the independence period, there was a reconnection to the new states and a reconstruction of geopolitical visions that in time was transformed into a Latin American ‘continental’ vision. Along this line, the study explores the contemporary confluence between the Catholic Church and geopolitics through ideas and conceptual frameworks such as the Patria Grande. Issues such as regional integration, popular theology and Catholic social commitment are presented as core elements of the Church’s geopolitics in Latin America.

The irrational and the shift of human boundaries in contemporary novels by Castillon, Martinez and NDiaye2019Ingår i: Bergen Language and Lingustics Studies, ISSN 1892-2449, E-ISSN 1892-2449, Vol. 10, nr 1, artikel-id 10Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The infiltration of magical, marvellous and fantastic features in novels which have a realist anchoring is a remarkable trend in contemporary literature by women writers in French. In order to reveal the issues conveyed by such an imagery built on various literary traditions, I examine the representations of the irrational in recent novels by three authors: Eux (2014) and Les Pêchers (2015) by Claire Castillon, Du Domaine des murmures (2011) and La Terre qui penche (2015) by Carole Martinez and Ladivine (2013) by Marie NDiaye. I use the term “irrational” as a comprehensive notion referring to the fantastic and supernatural elements in the novels, including altered perceptions, paranormal and strange occurences, metamorphosis, staging of an alter ego, monstrosity and animality in human beings, life-after-death issues, emphasised relations to nature, and other phenomena and states that can not be explained by logic. Formulations of the irrational theme exploit a literary patrimony, related in particular to the traditions of medieval marvellous literature, the fairy tales, fantastic literature, surrealism and fantastic realism. I find that the irrational articulates a shift in human spatiotemporality towards vegetal states, animality or monstrosity, and initiates an altered approach to the world. A displaced sense of reality stemming from irrational phenomena and perceptions leads to a dislocation of human consciousness which is performed through the narrative voices. The framework for the analysis consists of a feminist and posthumanist conceptualisation which involves the notions of ‘performativity’ and ‘traces’ developed by Butler and Derrida.

This chapter focuses on the speech of slave spirits, or pretos-velhos (‘old Blacks’), that we meet in Umbanda communities in Brazil. Such spirits are understood as old African slaves who may possess initiated mediums during the state of trance in rituals. Pretos-velhos represent the memory of slavery by showing a linguistic behavior associated with their condition of enslaved Africans brought from Africa to Brazil: a particular way of speaking, as if an old speaker of African languages who had learned Portuguese as a second language. Earlier studies discuss linguistic characteristics that distinguish the speech of pretos-velhos from other varieties of Brazilian Portuguese, and compare their speech with literary representations of the speech of Africans and their descendants in Brazil, affirming that the contact between speakers of Portuguese and African languages can explain the emergence of specific linguistic features. This chapter will analyze both recordings with one preto-velho called Pai João (‘Father John’) gathered by the author during fieldwork in an Umbanda community in 2005, and written representations of the speech of pretos-velhos in books with Umbanda ritual songs. The findings indicate that, at some point in time, the linguistic features represented in the speech of pretos-velhos were characteristic of all speakers of African languages who learned Portuguese as a second language informally in Brazilian colonial settings. Moreover, the use of certain phonetic and grammatical features in the speech of pretos-velhos has contributed to the characterization of the linguistic behavior of native speakers of African languages who acquired Portuguese as a second language. Some of the features are also present in the so-called Brazilian vernacular Portuguese (and may even be explained by contact with African languages), other signal the speech of a foreigner. The oral representations can be used to complement the limited written data available to us on the speech of the slave population. Finally, we believe that in sacred spaces, where the agents or owners of discourse belong to Afro-Brazilian religious communities, specific or innovative linguistic features seem to recreate African ancestral dignity. After all, the pretos-velhos, spirits of the light, born in Africa, are always ready to help people who often come to Umbanda temples the consult them.

The Place of Truth in Religious Controversies: the case of the Traité de l'eucharistie by the Protestant Philippe Duplessis-Mornay2019Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to analyse the tension between two conceptions of truth in the discourse of the religious controversies after the French Wars of Religion: truth conceived of as a certainty and truth conceived of as a quest.

The regulated coexistence of Catholics and Protestants in accordance with the Edict of Nantes (1598) fails to resolve the tensions between the two confessions, as attested by the numerous texts of religious controversy published under the Peace. In this war of words, in which each side tries to convince members of the other side to change their opinion and confession, the protagonists do not consider each other as trustworthy. Theologians are thus faced with the problem of achieving credibility and truth holds a central place in their discourse: it may be problematised, presented as a principle, advanced as an argument or aimed as an objective. The controversy shakes the conception of truth as incontestable, as well as the borders between orthodoxy and heterodoxy.

In 1598, the Protestant Philippe Duplessis-Mornay publishes the Traité de l’eucharistie. The treatise addresses one of the most pervasive topics of contention between Catholics and Protestants and prompts many other publications from the other side. The corpus chosen for the study is composed of the preface of the 1604 edition of the treatise. Using Discourse Analysis as a theoretical and methodological framework, this study focuses on the different uses of the term truth, as well as related terms (true, really, truly…), metaphors, opposites (error, untruthfulness) in order to understand the axiological organisation of the author. Two conceptions of truth are distinguished: truth as a certainty and truth as a quest. In the first perspective, the controversy furthers a power struggle in which the adversary is subjected to the division truth-error/untruthfulness. In the second perspective, the controversy seems to unify the protagonists in a common search for truth and a possible conciliation.

The production of knowledge in Brazilian social movement families2019Ingår i: Journal of Alternative and Community Media, E-ISSN 2206-5857, Vol. 4, nr 2, s. 60-73Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Analyses of the interplay between media technologies and social movements have been predominantly media-centric, focusing on practices and orientations towards media. Studies looking into communication and media practices within social movements usually have the single social movement as a unit of analysis, overlooking relations and interactions among social movements. We shift the focus to practices and orientations towards media, and to communicative processes among social movement families. The study pays particular attention to communication related to the production and circulation of knowledge. Through the study of the interrelations among three social movements in Brazil, we propose a typology of knowledge constructed and circulated within and among social movements as related to 1) militancy and insurgency, 2) mobilisation dynamics, and 3) framing awareness.
