    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to describe, analyse and compare different models of child welfare investigation and assessment of families. We selected six local authorities and used vignettes to study investigation/assessment procedures for families with children age 0–12 years, that were reported to the authority for child maltreatment. Each of the local authorities had, in one way or another, attracted wide spread professional attention due to their use of certain models of social work with children.

The study aims to answer the following questions:

    • Do local authorities use more or less standardardized models in child welfare investigation and family assessment?

    • If yes, how can these models be described?

    • Does the process of the investigation/family assessment vary with the choice of model?

Results reveal certain patterns in child welfare investigations, mainly based on how local child welfare work is organized. But there are also wide variations between local authorities with similar organisations and even with the same choice of models. Also, there are great variations within most local authorities, regardless of how they are organized or what model of investigation/assessment they use. Results suggest that professed use of a ”model” in investigation/assesment work does not necessarily lead to daily child welfare work becoming more predictable. That is, a child welfare report can generate different investigation processes and outcomes within a local authory, even if social workers claim to use a specific model in their work. A ”model” should be understood as a basic orientation with considerable variety. If a ”model” in child welfare work is defined as a standardized, replicable method of investigation/assessment and decisionmaking, producing a predictable process or outcome in child welfare investigations – then there are no models. One way to study investigation/assessment work in child welfare is to focus the organizational context. In this study we have categorized organisations with a sub-unit doing only investigative work as specialised organisations and organisations where the social worker investi73 gate/assess as well as give advice, administrate placements in care etc. as integrated organisations. Results vary between social workers in specialised and integrated organisations. Social workers in specialised organisations tend to start investigations sooner, use more coercive actions and strive towards ”harder” interventions in the form of placements in residential and foster care. Social workers in integrated organisations tend to vary more in their decisions, and favour mostly in-home-treatment. The study points toward a lack of distinct concepts, assessment standards, predictable procedures and outcomes in child welfare investigations. Results indicate a professional uncertainty about central issues in this most formalised area of child welfare. Investigation procedures and outcomes seem to differ considerably between local authorities and individual professionals – that is depending on the geographic residence of the family and what social worker that is assigned to the case.

    Abstract [sv]

Girls with highly educated parents have less somatic complaints2017Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning, ISSN 0038-0342, E-ISSN 2002-066X, Vol. 54, nr 4, s. 335-339Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, as in Western countries generally, somatic complaints are common in adolescents. These complaints are clearly connected with gender while the evidence of socioeconomic inequalities is less conclusive. The aim of this study is to analyse the combined relevance of gender and parental education for adolescents' somatic complaints, using national data with direct information from adolescents and their parents (n=7,393). Among girls, but not among boys, a graded association was found demonstrating less somatic complaints with higher parental education. Stress and coping are discussed as potentially important mechanisms.

School Demands and Coping Resources - Associations with Multiple Measures of Stress in Mid-Adolescent Girls and Boys2018Ingår i: International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, ISSN 1661-7827, E-ISSN 1660-4601, Vol. 15, nr 10, artikel-id 2143Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Stress, and stress-related health complaints, are common among young people, especially girls. Since studies have shown that school demands are an important driver of stress in adolescents, identifying if school-based resources can protect against stress is highly relevant. The aim of this study was to analyse task-related demands and task-related coping resources as aspects of the school work environment of potential relevance for stress in mid-adolescent girls and boys. The data came from “The School Stress and Support study” (TriSSS) conducted among students in grades 8 and 9 (aged 14–16 years). Self-reports of demands, coping resources, stress, as well as recurrent pain, were collected through questionnaires (n = 411). A subsample of students (n = 191–198) also provided salivary samples, which were analysed for the stress marker cortisol. Linear (OLS) and binary logistic regression analyses showed that higher demands were associated with more perceived stress, a higher likelihood of recurrent pain, and a lower cortisol awakening response. Greater coping resources were associated with less perceived stress and a lower likelihood of recurrent pain, but there was no association with cortisol. The strength of the associations differed by gender. The findings suggest that schools can promote student wellbeing by providing clear and timely information and teacher support to the students, especially for boys. Identifying specific features of the schoolwork that give rise to stress and to modify these accordingly is also of importance, especially for girls.

    Abstract [sv]

Tracing Improving Livelihoods in Rural Africa Using Local Measures of Wealth: A Case Study from Central Tanzania, 1991–20162018Ingår i: Land, E-ISSN 2073-445X, Vol. 7, nr 2, artikel-id 44Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

We studied livelihood changes and poverty dynamics over a 25-year period in two villages in central Tanzania. The villages were, from the early 1990s and 2000s, strikingly poor with between 50% and 55% of families in the poorest wealth groups. 25 years later much has changed: people have become substantially wealthier, with 64% and 71% in the middle wealth groups. The new wealth had been generated locally, from farming, particularly of sunflowers as a cash crop. This goes against a conventional view of small-scale farming in Tanzania as being stagnant or unproductive. The area of land farmed per family has increased, almost doubling in one village. People have made money, which they invest in mechanised farming, improved housing, education of their children, livestock, and consumer goods. Improved infrastructure and local entrepreneurs have played key roles in the area’s transformation. Locally identified wealth rankings showed that most villagers, those in the middle wealth groups and above, can now support themselves from their land, which is a notable change to a time when 71% and 82% in each village respectively depended on casual labour for their survival. This change has come at a cost to the environment. By 2016, the village forests have largely gone and been replaced by farms. Farmers were concerned that the climate was turning drier because of deforestation. Studying the mundane—the material used in roofs, the size of farms, and so on made it possible to trace and understand the radical transition the area has experienced.

    Abstract [sv]

    Children in Out-of-Home Care and Adult Labor-Market Attachment: A Swedish National Register Study2016Ingår i: Journal of Public Child Welfare, ISSN 1554-8732, E-ISSN 1554-8740, Vol. 10, nr 4, s. 414-433Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Using longitudinal national register data, we investigated labor-market attachment during the years 1993-1995 in Sweden for persons aged 25-35 years who had been in out-of-home care before the age of 18 in Sweden during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. We consider whether an immigrant background has an additional influence on labor-market attachment. Compared to majority population peers, young persons who had been in foster care had shorter educations. Fewer had a strong labor-market attachment and more were dependent on social assistance. Results from multinomial regression models indicated that having been in foster care during childhood reduced the probability of high attachment to the labor-market and increased the probability of social assistance dependency, even after making adjustments for education, marital status, parenthood, domicile, and birth country. Few signs of additive effects from being both an immigrant and a former foster child are found.

Growing gaps: the importance of income and family for educational inequalities in mortality among Swedish men and women 1990–20092015Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1403-4948, E-ISSN 1651-1905, Vol. 43, nr 6, s. 563-570Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Aims: Although absolute levels of mortality have decreased among Swedish men and women in recent decades, educational inequalities in mortality have increased, especially among women. The aim of this study is to disentangle the role of income and family type in educational inequalities in mortality in Sweden during 1990-2009, focusing on gender differences. Methods: Data on individuals born in Sweden between the ages of 30 and 74 years were collected from total population registries, covering a total of 529,275 deaths and 729 million person-months. Temporary life expectancies (age 30-74 years) by education were calculated using life tables, and rate ratios were estimated with Poisson regression with robust standard errors. Results: Temporary life expectancy improved among all groups except low educated women. Relative educational inequalities in mortality (RRs) increased from 1.79 to 1.98 among men and from 1.78 to 2.10 among women. Variation in family type explained some of the inequalities among men, but not among women, and did not contribute to the trend. Variation in income explained a larger part of the educational inequalities among men compared to women and also explained the increase in educational inequalities in mortality among men and women. Conclusions: Increasing educational inequalities in mortality in Sweden may be attributed to the increase in income inequalities in mortality.

The social gradient in smoking: individual behaviour, norms and nicotine dependence in the later stages of the cigarette epidemic2022Ingår i: Social Theory & Health, ISSN 1477-8211, E-ISSN 1477-822X, nr 20, s. 276-290Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The cigarette epidemic tends to develop in a similar pattern across diverse populations in different parts of the world. First, the prevalence of smoking increases, then it plateaus and finally it declines. The decline in smoking prevalence tends to be more pronounced in higher social strata. The later stages of the cigarette epidemic are characterized by emerging and persisting socioeconomic gradients in smoking. Due to its detrimental health consequences, smoking has been the subject of extensive research in a broad range of academic disciplines. I draw on literature from both the social and medical sciences in order to develop a model in which physiological nicotine dependence, individual smoking behaviour and norms surrounding smoking in the immediate social environment are related through reflexive processes. I argue that the emergence and persistence of social gradients in smoking at the later stages of the cigarette epidemic can be attributed to a combination of the pharmacological properties of nicotine, network homophily and the unequal distribution of material and non-material resources across social strata.

Understanding the Educational Gradient in Mortality2017Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

There is a positive association between education and longevity. Individuals with a university degree tend to live longer than high school graduates who, in turn, live longer than those with compulsory education. These differences are neither larger nor smaller in Sweden than in other European countries, despite its ambitious welfare-state policies. Furthermore, educational differences in longevity are growing, especially among women.

In this thesis I look at the structural, individual and behavioral processes which generate and maintain the educational gradient in mortality. This is done by compiling theoretical insights and empirical research from a range of scientific disciplines. In doing so, this thesis aims to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the educational gradient in mortality.

Several factors contribute to the association between education and health. Social and biological processes initiated in early life influence both educational achievement and adult health. Education helps individuals become more effective as agents by fostering generic skills such as information-gathering and decision-making. This aspect of education, learned effectiveness, promotes control and health regardless of available resources and prevailing conditions. Education thus has a direct influence on health. Education also indirectly influences health by giving access to better occupational positions and higher incomes, as well as by promoting social capital and healthy habits.

The empirical section of the thesis consists of four separate quantitative studies using register data. Three of the studies use Swedish national register data while one uses register data from 18 European populations. The results indicate that widening income inequalities in mortality have contributed to a widening of educational inequalities in mortality, since education is a determinant of income. Both alcohol and smoking contribute to educational inequalities in longevity, but smoking has played an especially pronounced role in the widening of inequalities among women. Smoking represents a significant part of the explanation as to why women with low education have experienced smaller gains in life expectancy than the rest of the population. The results also indicate that the general trend towards more well-educated populations has contributed to the widening educational inequalities in mortality in Europe and that education is a stronger predictor of mortality among low income-earners than among the rest of the population.

    Educational expansion and inequalities in mortality — A fixed-effects analysis using longitudinal data from 18 European populations2017Ingår i: PLOS ONE, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 12, nr 8, artikel-id e0182526Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Objective: The aim of this paper is to empirically evaluate whether widening educational inequalities in mortality are related to the substantive shifts that have occurred in the educational distribution.Materials and methods: Data on education and mortality from 18 European populations across several decades were collected and harmonized as part of the Demetriq project. Using a fixed-effects approach to account for time trends and national variation in mortality, we formally test whether the magnitude of relative inequalities in mortality by education is associated with the gender and age-group specific proportion of high and low educated respectively. Results: The results suggest that in populations with larger proportions of high educated and smaller proportions of low educated, the excess mortality among intermediate and low educated is larger, all other things being equal. Conclusion: We conclude that the widening educational inequalities in mortality being observed in recent decades may in part be attributed to educational expansion.

The contribution of alcohol consumption and smoking to educational inequalities in life expectancy among Swedish men and women during 1991–20082018Ingår i: International Journal of Public Health, ISSN 1661-8556, E-ISSN 1661-8564, Vol. 63, nr 1, s. 41-48Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

    Objectives

To assess the level and changes in contribution of smoking and alcohol-related mortality to educational differences in life expectancy in Sweden.

    Methods

We used register data on the Swedish population at ages 30–74 during 1991–2008. Cause of death was used to identify alcohol-related deaths, while smoking-related mortality was estimated using lung cancer mortality to indirectly assess the impact of smoking on all-cause mortality.

    Results

Alcohol consumption and smoking contributed to educational differences in life expectancy. Alcohol-related mortality was higher among men and contributed substantially to inequalities among men and made a small (but increasing) contribution to inequalities among women. Smoking-related mortality decreased among men but increased among women, primarily among the low educated. At the end of the follow-up, smoking-related mortality were at similar levels among men and women. The widening gap in life expectancy among women could largely be attributed to smoking.

    Conclusions

Smoking and alcohol consumption contribute to educational differences in life expectancy among men and women. The majority of the widening in the educational gap in mortality among women can be attributed to alcohol and smoking-related mortality.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how the social services could investigate and support children of irregular immigrants within the boundaries of the law. More specifically it aimed to examine the legal possibilities and obstacles for the social services to support irregular immigrants, how the officials at the social services act considering the legal aspects, and how they reason morally and ethically when dealing with irregular immigrants. To answer the aim of the study the theory of positive law was used combined with qualitative interviews with two officials at the social services. Moreover a small quantitative telephone study with officials in the social services and with voluntary organizations was made. The study has used theories of sociology of law, law and ethics, and professional (civil) disobedience. The conclusions were that children of irregular immigrants are included by the Swedish law for social services, but are hindered from getting support by the legal obligation to inform the police authorities when the social services are dealing with foreigners who did not apply for a residence permit. There is a need for the officials to be extra committed in such cases and they break the obligation to inform to be able to support the children.

Opinionens mekanismer: Om värderingar och verklighet1998Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

A significant characteristic of our time is the accelerating speed and increased volume ofinformation, where events and information about events form an interacting dynamo. The traitsand abilities of individuals and society to handle and respond to that flow of informationdeserve political attention. In this study it is shown that research on attitudes, value orientationsand political opinion has to a large extent neglected that call for attention. The preponderanceof cross-sectional data, and scarcity of long-term series survey data about attitudes, andespecially about voters' perception of political facts, contribute to a common weakness instudies of political attitudes and opinion. In studies where there is little or no variation betweenpoints in time to be studied, and the indicators are few, attitudes and value orientations appearas traits and characteristics of individuals and segments of the electorate. In this study manyindicators and decades of variation have been made available for study. As more temporalvariations and indicators are allowed into the picture, we see less of such characteristics andmore of the process and mechanisms behind attitude and opinion formulation We seesimilarities emerge where differences once seemed to prevail, and we see indications of acommon perception regarding what is reality, and the impact that common perception has. Thatimpact is the major cause of cyclic changes and trends in values, attitudes and opinions of theaverage voter, as well as the major cause of disagreement among voters, classes, opiniongroups and political parties A general pattem emerges where groups with different valueorientations tend to change attitudes in the same direction over time. It is maintained andillustrated in several examples that even voters who strongly disagree on a particular politicalissue, still tend to show much agreement in their evalution of differences between componentsof the same issue There are clear signs of a general pattem where pros and cons order theirevaluation of components in agreement. A theoretical perspective upon opinion and attitudestudies is outlined and its relevance is shown in a review of contemporary research, includingthe theory of post materialism, dissonance theory and selective exposure, etc. In building amodel of the mechanisms behind opinion formation, relevant findings are pointed to in recentpsychological and neurophysiological research, and some basic theoretical components areoutlined. A simulation model is presented and discussed in an appendix. Among theconclusions reached is that the voter aggregate has capacities to handle information beyond thatof the individual voter. Another conclusion is that ideologies, and party systems that representssome of them, are at a disadvantage when it comes to having a say in developments in theworld they are part of. It could very well be that they are mied by the developments rather thanthe opposite.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this review article is to present an overview of the, in the Nordic countries, relatively new research area ’children exposed to domestic violence’, and to discuss the implications of this research. The overview shows that the international research is primarily quantitative, focusing on children’s symptoms. Only a small part of the published research studies are qualitative. These studies use the term ‘experience’, rather than ‘exposed’, stressing the child’s subject status. The Nordic research is qualitative, and in line with early North-American studies, uses the term ‘to witness’. Although the field has greatly expanded, the field still have many unanswered questions concerning for example recilience, gender and ethnicity, and lack un understanding of the relational and contextual aspects from the child’s perspective.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is, by analysing children's and young people's discourses, to investigate their strategies in response to domestic violence episodes, in relation to their age. The empirical data come from individual interviews with children and young people (ages 8–20 years) who had experienced domestic violence and lived at refuges for abused women. The thematic analysis shows that the children describe a wide range of strategies before, during and after a violent episode, that all children act regardless of age and that strategies vary according not only to age but also to situation and context. The theoretical framework used is the sociology of childhood, and the analysis engages with theoretical concepts of age, agency and positioning.

    Abstract [en]

In recent years, the interest in including children and adolescents in research on violence and abuse has increased. According to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, children have the right to be heard in issues that concern them and their lives. However, this puts great demands on researchers and the projects they design. This article discusses challenges in shedding light on children’s experiences and including them as informants. The starting point for discussion is three research projects aimed, in different ways, at measuring or exploring the dynamics of children exposed to violence. Using these studies as a backdrop, three main questions are asked. What con-cepts are used to describe children’s experiences and why is the choice of concepts important? Do our surveys measure what we think we measure, and do our interviews capture what we want to capture if our aim is to explore and understand children’s lifeworld? What are some of the central ethical dilemmas researchers face when conducting research on children and violence? Finally, the importance and implications of these methodological and empirical challenges are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

Gambling about money is a frequent phenomenon in our modern community’s. The gambling has for some people resulted in a compulsive gambling. These consequences affects not only the gambler but also have impact on his or hers relatives. The purpose of this study is to describe how a small selection off relatives to persons with a compulsive gambling experience the gambling consequences in there life. The empirical material consists of five interviews with five relatives to persons with a gambling dependence. Coping theory, theory of crises and a systemic perspective has been used to analyse the empirical material.

The results that appear are that the relatives have all described early signs that they at the time could not interpret. They have felt that the gambler has been absent in mind. The discovery of the gambling describes as a chocking experience. They have created there own cooping strategies. The relatives show a great amount of strength and they have drawn positive experiences from a difficult reality like better relations and communication with the gambler, and can see that they have to take care of them selfs and not only care for the gambler. The study also indicates that family ties are hard to brake, especially between parents and there children.

Sosial ulikhet i alkoholbruk og alkoholrelatert sykelighet og dødelighet2016Rapport (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [no]

    Abstract [en]

Summary: This article examines and discusses the research field of children exposed to domestic violence, a field which has greatly expanded during the last 10 years. The author presents an overview of this research, discusses its implications, and describes future challenges and contemporary knowledge gaps.

Findings: The author argues that the field is dominated by studies that a) are quantitative, b) use the mothers as the informant and c) are represented by traditional psychology and social medicine, rather than social work. These studies have found substantial support for the negative emotional and behavioral consequences that children exposed to domestic violence suffer. However, many questions and problems remain unanswered. These questions include both the research field itself and the need for new approaches such as qualitative research including the voice of the child, longitudinal studies, and questions regarding methodology and research ethics.

Applications: The author argues that there is a need for more qualitative research in general and social work research in particular. The implications for social work practice and policy are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

This article presents results from the first Norwegian nation-wide study on children in shelters for battered women and their situation. One of the qualitative findings; that children who live in shelters with their mothers have difficulties in keeping the shelterstay a secret is discussed specifically. The argument pursued is that the children are struggling to keep the shelter a secret, and that the secrecy creates problems in their everyday life and social relations. Moreover, the children develop a number of strategies to manage the issue of secrecy. Finally, the implications of this is discussed, as well as the secrecy as one of the dilemmas facing the new Norwegian shelter movement with an integrated children’s perspective.

    Abstract [en]

Children often accompany their mothers to women's refuges, where they are at risk of developing behavioural and psychological difficulties. In these situations it is important for the children to be given the possibility to address their own experiences of violence. However, little is known about how children experience these interventions. This study examined children's perceptions about their everyday lives at refuges in Norway. In the first phase of the study, participants included 50 directors of women’s refuges in Norway, who were interviewed via telephone. The second phase included face-to-face interviews with 22 children from 7 refuges. The study asked what interventions do children in refuges receive and how do the children experience those interventions. Findings revealed that the children focused on two forms of interventions as particularly helpful: activities such as trips and outings; and individual counselling. The most important intervention for children who experienced domestic violence was to remove them from a violent environment. As such, the refuge in itself could be considered an intervention. In conclusion, the author describes why women’s refuges represent a unique opportunity for interventions with children.

    Abstract [no]

    Abstract [en]

The second European Conference on Domestic Violence (ECDV) was held in Porto, Portugal in September 2017. Given the interest in and focus on children and adolescents at both the first and second ECDV, and the identified need to gather research and researchers working in the field of children and domestic violence in Europe, the JOFV made a call for a special issue on European research on children, adolescents and domestic violence. The call has resulted in this double issue of 17 articles which comment on research conducted across Europe, authored from differed scientific backgrounds and reflecting diversity in topics and methods. The work reflects not only how far we have come in Europe on developing research based knowledge on children and domestic violence, but it has also has played an important role in identifying multiple gaps and address needs for the future.

    Abstract [en]

Grounded in an ontological, theoretical and methodological position that views children's views and experiences of domestic violence as critical to our understanding of those experiences, this letter to the editor reflects on Kimball's (Journal of Family Violence, 31, 625-637, 2016) review of research since 1999 when Edleson's influential article on children exposed to domestic violence was published (Journal of Interpersonal violence, 14(8), 839-870). Welcoming Kimball's call for research that can capture the full effects of children's exposure', we nonetheless challenge Kimball's criticism of the paucity of research literature directly capturing children's voices. Rather, we argue in this letter that Kimball's (Journal of Family Violence, 31, 625-637, 2016) methodology excluded those published qualitative studies which have engaged directly with children and sought to understand their lived experience of domestic violence. We conclude by highlighting our alignment with Kimball's assertion for the need to capture the voice and experience of children, but argue that this knowledge already exists. We also argue that some questions can only be answered by children and adolescents themselves.

Development of positive intergroup emotions amongst youth in contexts affected or threatened by conflict2022Ingår i: Acta Paediatrica, ISSN 0803-5253, E-ISSN 1651-2227, Vol. 111, nr 10, s. 1862-1865Artikel, forskningsöversikt (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Social-psychological research has established the importance of positive emotions for creating and maintaining positive intergroup relations in contexts affected or threatened by conflict (intergroup reconciliation). Building on existing body of evidence, we conceptualised intergroup reconciliation as a process aimed at regulating negative intergroup emotions such as hatred and creating more positive and relationship functional emotions such as trust. This review presents theoretical and empirical insights into the emotion regulation perspective on intergroup reconciliation. Regulation of negative intergroup emotions amongst youths affected by conflict is feasible through social-psychological interventions.

Appealing to Moral Exemplars: Shared Perception of Morality as an Essential Ingredient of Intergroup Reconciliation2020Ingår i: Social Issues and Policy Review, ISSN 1751-2395, E-ISSN 1751-2409, Vol. 14, nr 1, s. 217-243Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

A history of intergroup conflict threatens the basic sense of in-group and out-group morality. This poses a severe obstacle to reconciliation both on socioemotional (by constraining forgiveness and generating dysfunctional intergroup emotions) and on instrumental (by constraining contact opportunities and effectiveness) levels. We argue and review research on how learning about others' moral behavior can contribute to intergroup reconciliation processes. Acknowledging the central role of morality in individual and group perceptions, we propose a new model of reconciliation grounded in research on moral exemplars. Moral exemplars are examples of individual heroic behavior crossing group borders (out-group members engage in rescuing in-group members and in-group members rescuing out-group members). We demonstrate how intergroup relations in post conflict societies can be improved through learning about moral exemplars. Based on studies and interventions performed in multiple postgenocide and postconflict settings, we suggest that learning about moral exemplars effectively regulates intergroup relations by enabling forgiveness and contact after mass atrocities. We delineate specific policy-relevant recommendations that may be applied by practitioners working in societies that have been affected by historical crimes.
