O Judeu, de Bernardo Santareno y El sueño de la razón, de Antonio Buero Vallejo: dos diferentes estrategias creativas ante la censura2019In: Moderna Språk, ISSN 2000-3560, E-ISSN 2000-3560, Vol. 113, no 1, p. 202-214Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Jew, by Bernardo Santareno and The Sleep of Reason, by Antonio Buero Vallejo: two different creative strategies for censorship

It is plausible that the Portuguese playwright Bernardo Santareno and his Spanish counterpart Antonio Buero Vallejo represent two different - or even opposite - attitudes regarding the censorship of the Portuguese and Spanish regimes in the 1960s. Two texts are analyzed in this article: Santareno’s O Judeu and Buero Vallejo‘s El sueño de la razón, which have been chosen because of the contrast between analogies and divergences that arise when evaluating the historical period represented in the two dramas.

From the methodological point of view, I will approach the textual aspect of the two dramas in order to highlight the analogies and, above all, the semantic-syntactic differences between them, later I will try to highlight the cultural political context that might have conditioned the different aesthetic options of the two writers.

A recepção produtiva de El reino de este mundo em Memorial do Convento2017In: Revista Brasileira de Literatura Comparada, ISSN 0103-6963, Vol. 18, no 29, p. 22Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

What strikes the reader of El reino de este mundo de Alejo Carpentier and Memorial do Convento of José Saramagois an evident sequence of similarities at both morphological and thematic levels. The purpose of this paper is to highlight and describe these similarities with the support of Gérard Genette’s theory of transtextuality (1982) and José Enrique Martínez’s Fernández models of intertextuality (2001). The comparison focuses on various aspects of these novels, such as discursive devices (time, narration), actantial dynamics and somesharedtopics. My aim is to show the existence of a productive reception of El reino de este mundo in the writing of Memorialdo Convento. This study departs from comparative approach literature inspired by Claudio Guillén (2005) and situates itself within the area of research that aims to highlight the reception of the Spanish-American literature in Portuguese literature.

Proeminência e dessacralização da personagem histórica por meio do anacronismo em Los perros del paraíso de Abel Posse e As Naus de Lobo Antunes2016In: 452º F. Cuatrocientos cincuenta y dos grados Fahrenheit, ISSN 2013-3294, p. 165-177, article id 15Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is part of a comparative literature project that aims to explore certain similarities between Spanish and Portuguese-language fiction. The specific purpose is to highlight how a number of historical and social issues are dealt with in works that often show overt analogies in terms of topic, style, character, and actantial structure. The paper presents an analysis of two novels that offer similar views of the colonization process of the 15th and 16th centuries, Los perros del Paraíso (1983) by the Argentine writer Abel Posse and As Naus (1988) by the Portuguese writer António Lobo Antunes, both of which can be described, in the context of the theory of the historical novel, as new historical novels or postmodern historical novels.

    Abstract [en]

Autofiction and History: the hybridity of the narrative pactin Rainy Season by José Eduardo Agualusa

In several studies conducted in the last two decades, among others by Manuel Alberca (2007) and Philippe Gasparini (2004), a satisfactory definition of autofiction is proposed. The essential feature of autofictional narrative is, especially in the case of the first author, the ambiguity of the narrative pact proposed by the writer. The hybridity of the narrative pact, however, is also one of the striking features of the historical novel, especially in cases where the protagonist is a historical character, because this circumstance orientates towards a referential reading. The novel Rainy Season(1996) of the Angolan writer José Eduardo Agualusa develops a plot over several decades of Angolan history by a narrator whose identity seems to coincide with the author’s and at the same time devotes more than half of the chapters to the biography of an invented Angolan poet, sharing thus both the features of autofiction and historical novel. My communication is intended to argue towards dual genre identity and to show some devices that make it possible.

As Coordenadas da Viagem no Tempo: Uma contribuição para a teoria da ficção histórica baseada em alguns textos portugueses dos séculos XVI, XIX e XX2002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In Portugal, as in other countries, a common characteristic of many of the novels published in the past twenty years is the recourse to a repertoire of literary devices that recall those of the historical novel.

On the basis of critical studies published in the 1990’s, and in particular Fernández Prieto’s Poética de la Novela Histórica, this thesis undertakes a study of the Portuguese historical novel with the aim of defining, to the extent possible, the limits of this literary genre, and to examine in detail some of its intrinsic—and pertinent—semantic and pragmatic traits: the setting of a fictional narrative in the past, the

introduction of historical persons and events and, not the least, the transtextual relationship between the fictional and the historiographic text.

Special attention is given to some of the more innovative forms of the contemporary historical novel, to highlight how by emphasising certain generic traits —that refer to the reader’s acquired knowledge— the author can compensate for the absence of others. Despite the inherent ”heterodoxy”, this device justifies grouping these novels under the general heading of the historical novel.

The thesis explores the analogies between some of these innovative narrative strategies of the contemporary historical novel with transtextual practices characteristic of literature predating the 19th Century and by which a certain ”historical knowledge” is requisite for decoding the text. The thesis also establishes a set of generic traits that the historical novel shares with epic poetry. In light of these

analogies, the thesis proposes a reading of Os Lusíadas as a historical poem. With this the author hopes to provide a contribution to a theory of historical fiction, understood as a genre encompassing, in addition to the novel, all forms of fictionalisation that rely on the historical discourse.
