In the eleventh century, the Baltic Sea area became a target for Christian crusades – religious enterprises combined with Scandinavian colonial ambitions. The countries of the Baltic Rim were converted, colonised and Europeanised, visibly expressed by, among other things, changed practices of exchange and the introduction of domestic coinages. Less discussed from a crusading and colonial perspective is the large island of Gotland. A wealthy maritime and trade node in the middle of the Baltic, it was by tradition tied to eastern Sweden but also held an autonomous position that is revealed archaeologically through differences in material culture. The chapter investigates the Gotlander’s strategies for maintaining their old ways and networks while trying to steer clear of new demands and tangible threats; the important part coins played in this; and how an analysis of colonial processes may improve the understanding of how local history unfolded.

Ett helt unikt medeltida föremål är en sigillstamp av brons från tolvhundratalet som återfanns på gården Duss, Bro sn, på Gotland på sjuttonhundratalet och då användes som brödstämpel.

Hösten 2021 gjorde en grupphobbydetektorister sitt livs fynd när de sökte av ett fält i Kirimäe, en by i västra Estland, straxt sydost om Haapsalu (Hapsal) (Fig. 1). Där fann de nämligen en silverskatt, bestående av inte mindre än 124 mynt, silvertenar, smycken och annat ornamenterat silver, totalt 913,3 gram. Platsen undersöktes därefter av det estniska Riksantikvarieämbetet (Karro 2021) som konstaterade att inga spår av en fyndbehållare kunde ses utan att fyndet spridits över några tiotal kvadratmeter på en åker, intill en förhistorisk miljö med bland annat ett par gravhögar. Fyndområdet är något förhöjt i terrängen och jorden mörkfärgad, men inga typiska boplatsfynd eller gravmaterial hittades (keramik, kol, ben eller dylikt), endast några brända granitstenar utan tydlig kontext. Föremålens spridning och skador på dem visar att det sannolikt handlar om ett fynd som överplöjts och då spridits mekaniskt av plogen – okänt när, och om det skett vid ett eller flera tillfällen. Vid en efterundersökning år 2022 återfanns ytterligare 92 mynt samt fler tenar och föremål, vilka förts samman med de övriga föremålen i Estlands historiska museum (Eesti Ajaloomuuseum/EAM) under inventarienumren AM 41 234 och 41 261. Föremålen i fyndet (nu 216 mynt,19–20 tackor och nio ornament eller fragment av sådana) visar sammantaget att det deponerats vid någon tidpunkt runt sekelskiftet 1200. Det är följaktligen inte förvånande att fyndets karaktär balanserar mellan de senvikingatida och tidigmedeltida fynden från Östersjöområdet vid den här tiden. Några föremål och drag i Kirimäefyndet har visat sig vara tämligen unika, och fyndet öppnar i ett slag upp ett spektrum av ny kunskap och nya frågor för numismatiker, arkeologer och historiker. Innehållet i det ovanliga fyndet, deponerat i dåvarande Livland (ungefär nuvarande Estland och Lettland), har tidigare publicerats i estniska sammanhang (Leimus & Saage 2022, Leimus 2023). Vi vill här även presentera det för enskandinavisk läsekrets, dels därför att det belyser även svenska fynd och svensk myntning, dels på grund av dess stora vetenskapliga potential på särskilt två punkter:

— fyndet innehåller en helt unik silverten eller tacka som är märkt (präglad)med en stamp tillhörande den samtida gotländska myntningen,

— fyndet ger viktiga ledtrådar till när biskop Albert av Riga (1201–1229) i nuvarande Lettland inledde sin myntning.

A central component of colonial history – and of numismatic theory – is how economy and money, and other manifestations of the everyday and hands-on, are part and parcel of the establishment and negotiation of power structures. Money, understood both as “means of exchange” and “means of payment”, plays an important part in the introduction of new practices, value standards, material realities and ways of thinking. Imposing one’s own modes on others is also a way to take control and assert superiority. Commodification processes – the ways that subjects are turned into objects (cf. Appadurai, 1986; Kopytoff, 1986; Thomas, 1991; Weiner, 1992; LiPuma, 1999) – may have a strong impact on power relations and traditional values in the meetings and interactions between the coloniser and the colonised. Money, goods and the prospect of profit may be strong motivations for the establishment or growth of a colony, alongside political, religious or other objectives. In the study of major cultural-historical processes, like colonial projects, means of payment – in particular coinage and related object types – are a prime source. It is therefore surprising that such a key instrument for control is not often discussed from this perspective, and that numismatic scholarship has taken so long to enter into the colonial and post-colonial debates.

Den 29 april 2023 såldes en medeltida brakteat präglad för kung Erik Eriksson (1222–1229,1234–1250) på auktion i Stockholm, ett mynt som tidigare stulits från Varnhems kloster. Om stulna föremål säljs utan att man kräver tillbaka dem, betyder det att de helt lagligt kan säljas på nytt i all oändlighet. Detta kommer att påverka allmänhetens synsätt på kulturarvet. Försäljningen av mynten från Varnhem visar att kulturarvet fortfarande inte har tillräckligt skydd.

This book explores coinage and related object types as an important form of material culture that is crucial to interrogating interactions between coloniser and colonised.

Money, Coinage and Colonialism is a much overdue treatment of coinage and money in debates around ancient and recent colonial practices. It argues that coinage offers unique opportunities to study interactions and effects of the meeting between colonisers and colonised, as well as the economic, political and ideological interactions between colonial communities and the state of origin. It is argued that the study of coins and other means of exchange may reveal less apparent and under-communicated processes, values and discourses in the study of colonial environments and projects, with commonalities informing a larger "global history" approach. A broad picture is built from numerous case studies, spanning from Classical Greek colonies to European colonial enterprises of the Modern period, exploring colonial histories, settings, ideology and resistance. Particular attention is paid to the role of coins in identity construction; to ambiguity, hybridity and creolisation of monetary objects in colonial contexts; and to specific uses of coins that tell of violence, oppression and resistance as well as of networks, acculturation and globalisation.

Composed of chronologically broad and diverse case studies from colonial contexts, this book is for researchers in colonial and post-colonial archaeology as well as archaeological and cultural-historical numismatics.

This chapter focuses on two general issues of relevance to the investigation of coin finds in church buildings based on case studies of two medieval churches, Arby and Gränna, in the province of Småland, Sweden.

Firstly, there is the issue involving therelationship between coin use in churches and the ownership of the church, whichcould be in the hands of either private patrons or parish congregations. What differencesin coin use might have resulted from the different ways a church might be managed? Can the coins help us to see such changes? Of central importance to this line ofinvestigation is the notion that coins reflect and are part of their historical context, butalso affected people’s everyday and religious lives (e.g. used for indulgences, masses,embellishment of church space, opening up interior space and power relations).

Secondly, there is the relationship between coin finds from churches and general coin use in society. How should differences in coin find patterns and fluctuations in the intensity of deposition be interpreted? To what extent are patterns from coin finds in churches useful for extrapolating and for interpretations of the role of coins outside of that specific context? Here, evaluations of the depositional processes and of the composition of the coin finds are of great consequence. This line of enquiry seeks to push beyond the common view that the church is “a society in miniature,” partly accepting it, but also underlining the unique character of the ecclesiastical context and of the events taking place in it, and thus the particular conditions for artefacts found there.

The results of this study of two Småland churches indicate, firstly, that coin use inside churches in Sweden only took off in a significant way with the formation of parishes in the thirteenth century, when congregations took over the responsibility for the church. Secondly, that coin use in churches was largely connected with offerings, and with certain events, such as the celebration of a designated saint’s day and fundraising for building projects. This raises the question of whether, and in what ways, fluctuations in the coin material found in ecclesiastical contexts may be used to discuss societal and economic phenomena outside of the church walls.
